Mars and Saturn in one sign: Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 16 reported plainly, why Saturn counts Mars an enemy while Mars is neutral, how Capricorn and Aries cross their dignities, planetary war, and a worked chart in Scorpio.

In short

Mars and Saturn share a sign in about 8 per cent of sampled charts. Both are malefics in BPHS, and Saravali's line for the pair is one of its harshest; this page reports it as the text's claim, not a verdict. This app has no yoga or penalty for the pair: it grades each graha's dignity and combustion and leaves Mangal Dosha to Mars's house alone.

This is the conjunction of the two natural malefics among the visible grahas, and it has a reputation to match. This page sets the reputation aside and looks at what the sources and the engine actually say. A yuti here means Mars and Saturn in the same whole sign. There is no orb: 1 degree apart or 28, the engine counts them conjunct. Degrees still come into two side rules, combustion and planetary war. For each graha on its own, read Mars in Vedic astrology and Saturn in Vedic astrology.

Mars and Saturn as the texts describe them

BPHS Ch. 3 groups the two more often than it separates them. Sl. 11 lists both among the malefics, with no condition attached. Sl. 22 makes them the only two tamasic grahas. Sl. 35-38 has both strong at night. Sl. 47 puts both among the Dhatu grahas. Where they differ, they differ sharply. Sl. 12-13 give Mars a person's strength and Saturn grief. In the cabinet of Sl. 14-15 Mars commands the army while Saturn is the servant. Sl. 20 gives Mars fire and Saturn air. Sl. 25 describes Mars as quick to anger and thin-waisted; Sl. 29 describes Saturn as long-bodied, emaciated and indolent. Sl. 48 calls Saturn the eldest of all the grahas.

The natural relationship runs one way. Bhrigu Sutras (Part I) lists Saturn as neutral to Mars, and lists Mars among Saturn's three enemies, with the Sun and the Moon. The engine's table (Kannan's) says the same: Saturn is in neither of Mars's lists, and Mars is in Saturn's enemies list. So Mars has no quarrel with Saturn, and Saturn has one with Mars.

Exaltation in the other's sign

The dignity schemes of these two are tangled together in a way no other pair matches. By BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50, Mars is exalted in Capricorn, which is Saturn's own sign, and Saturn is debilitated in Aries, which is Mars's own sign. So each of the four signs the two grahas own has a special meaning for the pair.

Sign of the pairMarsSaturn

Scorpio (Mars's)Own signEnemy sign
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54 as coded in the engine; the guest-graha labels from a scratch run of dignityOf over the 3,000-moment sample.

The "Enemy sign" entries come from the compound relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58. Two grahas in one sign are temporary enemies by Sl. 56. For Mars in Aquarius that turns Saturn from neutral to an enemy; for Saturn in Scorpio, Mars was already an enemy, and the temporary layer only confirms it. In Capricorn the exaltation overrides the friendship question entirely, and in Aries Saturn's fall does the same.

What the classical texts say about Mars with Saturn

Saravali Ch. 15 gives two planets in one house a sloka each, and Sl. 16 is Mars with Saturn. This translation has the native as a metallurgist and expert in jugglery, and then runs through deceit, theft, trouble from weapons and poison, and a fondness for quarrels. It is among the darkest readings in the chapter.

Two things should be said about it plainly. First, it is a single unconditional line: it names no sign, no house and no distance, so it reads Mars-Saturn in exalted Capricorn exactly as it reads the pair in Aries with Saturn fallen. Second, the same chapter does not ask to be read that way. Its closing Sl. 23 says the stated results "are likely to become increased, or decreased" according to the good or bad vargas the planets occupy. The text itself expects its one-liners to be adjusted.

BPHS has no two-planet chapter and no yoga named for Mangal with Sani. Its contribution is the general set above: both malefic, both tamasic, an enmity from Saturn's side, and the war rule below.

Not this app's verdict

Saravali Sl. 16 is reported because it is what the classical source says. This app does not attach it to anyone's chart, does not score the conjunction down, and prescribes nothing for it.

Planetary war between Mars and Saturn

Both grahas are on BPHS's list for graha yuddha. Ch. 79 Sl. 9 says Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn within one degree of each other are at war, and among all but Venus the one to the north wins. Ch. 27 Sl. 20 shifts the difference between their Shad Balas to the winner. The engine has no war rule and does not compute the north-south positions needed to call it, so the app leaves any such war unscored.

It is uncommon in any case. In the 3,000-moment sample only 16 of the 246 Mars-Saturn charts had the two within a degree, and 63 within 5 degrees. The mean separation was 10.68 degrees. Most Mars-Saturn conjunctions in this app are two grahas sharing a sign at some distance.

Combustion and retrograde motion

The engine tests each graha against the Sun separately: Mars is combust within 17 degrees, Saturn within 15. In the 246 sampled conjunctions, Mars was combust in 35, Saturn in 23, and both together in 17. A combust graha's Sthana (positional) strength is set to zero in the app's Shad Bala. Mars was retrograde in 14 of the 246 and Saturn in 28. Retrograde motion does not change the combustion limit for either of them; the engine has a separate retrograde orb only for Mercury and Venus.

Yogas this pair can be part of

No yoga in the engine is named for Mars with Saturn. Several rules still interact with the pair, and the yogas calculator shows what fires in a chart:

  • Ruchaka and Sasa. Each needs its graha in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra. In Capricorn both can qualify at once, Mars exalted and Saturn in its own sign, if Capricorn is a kendra from the ascendant. In Aquarius only Saturn can; in Aries or Scorpio only Mars.
  • Lunar yogas. Both count for Sunapha and Anapha when they stand in the 2nd or 12th from the Moon.
  • Lordship yogas. Mars and Saturn between them rule four signs. For some ascendants one is a kendra lord and the other a trikona lord, and their conjunction is the link the Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga rule counts. For Libra rising, Saturn rules both the 4th and the 5th, a kendra and a trikona at once.

On Mangal Dosha, Saturn makes no difference in this app. The engine's rule reads only the house Mars is in.

Worked example: Mars and Saturn in Scorpio, 3rd house

The first chart in the fixed walk through New Delhi birth moments with the two in one sign: 27 January 1986, 22:31 IST. The birth chart calculator gives Virgo rising at 14.39 degrees, so with whole-sign houses Scorpio is the 3rd house.

  1. Same sign? Yes, Scorpio. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 16 applies as written.
  2. How far apart? 10.91 degrees: Mars in Vishakha, Saturn in Anuradha. Not within BPHS's one-degree war range.
  3. Dignity? Mars is in its own sign. Saturn is labelled "Enemy sign": Scorpio's lord, Mars, is a natural enemy of Saturn and a temporary enemy too, sitting beside it. This is the table above in action.
  4. Combust? Neither. The Sun is in Capricorn, two signs away.
  5. Lords? With Virgo rising, Mars rules the 3rd and 8th, Saturn the 5th and 6th. No kendra-trikona link is formed by the pair: Mars rules neither a kendra nor a trikona here.
  6. Ruchaka? No. Mars is in its own sign, but the 3rd house is not a kendra.
  7. Yogas detected: Vesi Yoga, Kedara Yoga, Gaj Kesari Yoga, Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga and Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona). The Dharma-Karmadhipati and Kendra-Kona entries are Venus and Mercury, lords of the 9th and 10th, together in Capricorn; Gaj Kesari is Jupiter with the Moon. None involves Mars or Saturn.
  8. Mangal Dosha? Not flagged; Mars is in the 3rd, which is not one of the engine's Mangal houses.

So in this chart the pair is present, Saravali's line applies on its own terms, and the engine's output about it amounts to two dignity labels. See Mars in the 3rd house, Saturn in the 3rd house and Saturn in Scorpio.

Checking the pair in your own chart

Because the engine has no single rule for Mars with Saturn, the useful checks are the separate ones it does run, taken in order. Each step below is something the birth chart or yogas calculator already shows; none needs a judgement call. Taken together they also show why two Mars-Saturn charts can look nothing alike in the app: an exalted Mars forming Ruchaka in a kendra and a fallen Saturn in the 8th are both "Mars-Saturn conjunctions" by the sign test, and the engine treats them very differently.

  1. The sign. If it is Capricorn, Aquarius, Aries or Scorpio, the table above gives both dignities at once. In any other sign, read each graha's label from the chart; it depends on where that sign's lord sits.
  2. The separation. Under 1 degree is BPHS's war range, which the app does not score. Over that, only the sign-level reading applies.
  3. The Sun. Mars within 17 degrees of it, or Saturn within 15, is flagged combust and loses its positional strength.
  4. The lordships. Work out which houses each rules from the ascendant. A kendra lord with a trikona lord makes the conjunction a Kendra-Kona link; otherwise the pair forms no lordship yoga.
  5. The house. Read the two house pages together, for example Mars and Saturn in the 10th, and treat the result as two readings side by side rather than one combined prediction.

How often the pair occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars and Saturn shared a sign in 246, or 8.2 per cent. Each graha's period runs on its own: the Saturn Mahadasha lasts 19 years and the Mars Mahadasha 7. Other pairs with these grahas: Sun-Saturn, Moon-Saturn, Mars-Rahu and Mars-Jupiter.

How common is the Mars-Saturn conjunction?
In this app's engine the two shared a sign in 246 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 8.2 per cent.
What does Saravali say about Mars with Saturn?
Ch. 15 Sl. 16 gives a harsh reading: metal-work and jugglery alongside deceit, quarrels and trouble from weapons. The chapter's Sl. 23 says such results rise or fall with the vargas involved. This page reports it as the text's claim.
Are Mars and Saturn enemies?
Saturn counts Mars as an enemy; Mars is neutral to Saturn. Bhrigu Sutras and the table the engine uses agree.
What happens when Mars and Saturn are together in Capricorn?
Mars is exalted and Saturn is in its own sign (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50). If Capricorn is a kendra from the ascendant, both Ruchaka and Sasa can fire in the same chart.
And when they are together in Aries?
Mars is in its own sign (moolatrikona in the first 12 degrees) and Saturn is debilitated, deepest at 20 degrees. Sasa cannot fire there; Ruchaka can, if Aries is a kendra.
Does the app compute planetary war between Mars and Saturn?
No. BPHS defines it for the two within one degree, with the northern one winning, but the engine has no war rule. In the sample 16 of 246 Mars-Saturn charts were that close.
Does Saturn with Mars make Mangal Dosha worse?
Not in this app. Mangal Dosha is flagged from Mars's house alone; the company Mars keeps is not part of the rule.
Does the app suggest a remedy for this conjunction?
No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
