In short
Mars and Rahu share a sign in about 7 per cent of sampled charts. No classical text in this corpus gives the pair a reading, and one modern translation's Mars-Rahu clause is disputed by the Bhrigu Sutras commentator. In this app Rahu does not change Mars's dignity, combustion or Mangal Dosha; the pair matters only to the Kaal Sarp axis test.
In BPHS's cabinet of grahas Mars is the commander of the army, and Rahu and Ketu are the army itself. A Mars-Rahu yuti puts the commander in the same sign as one of those two shadow points. On this site a conjunction means one whole sign: the engine applies no orb, so the two count as conjunct at any distance inside it. The degree gap is given below because the Kaal Sarp test, unlike the conjunction, is measured in degrees. The single-graha pages are Mars in Vedic astrology and Rahu in Vedic astrology.
Mars and Rahu as the texts describe them
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts both as malefics. Sl. 12-13 give Mars a person's strength; the sloka assigns Rahu no such governance. Sl. 30 describes Rahu as smoky in appearance with a blue mix, windy in temperament and intelligent. Sl. 47, sorting the grahas into Dhatu, Mula and Jiva classes, puts Mars and Rahu in the same group, the Dhatu grahas, along with the Moon and Saturn. Rahu is a chhaya graha, a shadow body, which the texts treat differently from the seven visible grahas throughout.
On friendship the sources have nothing for this pair. The natural relationships of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 are computed from each graha's mooltrikona, and Rahu's mooltrikona is itself disputed. The table the engine uses for natural relationships lists only the seven visible grahas, and the code comment says the nodes are excluded from dignity scoring. Mars's dignity in a Mars-Rahu chart is therefore graded exactly as if Rahu were not there, and Rahu's own label is always "Neutral".
Bhrigu Sutras (Part I) adds a belief it reports without adopting: that "Rahu acts like Saturn" and Ketu like Mars. On that view a Mars-Rahu pair would behave something like a Mars-Saturn pair. This app encodes nothing of the kind, and Bhrigu Sutras gives no rule that would let it.
What the classical texts say about Mars with Rahu
Saravali's two-planet chapter, Ch. 15, is built from pairs of the seven visible grahas. It runs from the Sun with the Moon to Venus with Saturn, twenty-one pairs, and none of them is Mars with Rahu. BPHS has no two-planet chapter. There is no classical one-line reading for this conjunction in the corpus, and this page does not borrow one from elsewhere to fill the space.
A disputed clause in Bhrigu Sutras
The one place the corpus brings Mars and Rahu together is a footnote-sized argument. Bhrigu Sutras' sutras on Mars in the 7th house deal with marriage. In the commentary, the editor sets out N. Krishna Rao's translation of the same sutras, which includes a clause for Mars "conj. Rahu". The commentator then says that there is no mention of Rahu, or of a debilitated planet, in the text of the sutras he has, and that he checked Rao used the same Sanskrit text. In his words, Rao seems to have made "some additions and omissions".
So the only Mars-Rahu statement in the corpus is one that its own commentator says is not in the original. This page does not repeat the clause, both because of that dispute and because it is a claim about a person's marriage that the app would not make. It is noted here as an example of how a "classical" reading for a node pair can turn out to be a translator's addition. The commentator is candid about the passage as a whole, too: he calls the text of those sutras so confusing that it is difficult to comment on them. A reading that its own editor hesitates over is not one this site will present as settled, and nothing in BPHS or Saravali stands in for it.
Silence, reported
Where the sources say nothing about a pair, this page says so. It does not supply a reading from popular sources that the corpus does not contain.
Node pairs: where Rahu counts in the engine and where it does not
The engine computes Rahu as the mean node and always marks it retrograde, in line with Bhrigu Sutras' description of the nodes' motion. From there, the pair's treatment comes down to a short list, each item read from the code.
| Rule | Does Rahu beside Mars change it? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Mars's dignity | No | Nodes are excluded from the relationship table |
| Mars's combustion | No | Tested against the Sun only, 17 degrees |
| Rahu's combustion | Never tested | No combustion orb for the nodes |
| Mangal Dosha | No | The rule reads Mars's house only |
| Vesi, Vasi, Ubhayachari | No | Only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn count |
| Sunapha, Anapha, Durudhura | No | Same five grahas, following Saravali Ch. 13 |
| Lordship yogas | No | Rahu rules no sign in the engine |
| Kaal Sarp | Possibly | Mars is the graha closest to Rahu and can sit at the edge of the axis |
The Mangal Dosha row deserves stress, because the pair is often described as intensifying it. The engine's rule is Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from the ascendant, with the 7th and 8th marked moderate and the rest mild, and nothing else. A Mars-Rahu conjunction in the 5th raises no flag; a Mars alone in the 7th does. The Mangal Dosha calculator shows the rule on any chart.
The Kaal Sarp edge
Kaal Sarp is the one rule where the pair can matter. The engine measures every visible graha's longitude forward from Rahu and calls Kaal Sarp present only if all seven fall strictly inside one half of the circle. Mars a few degrees past Rahu sits at the very start of the Rahu-to-Ketu half; a few degrees short of Rahu, at the very end of the Ketu-to-Rahu half. Either way, if Mars is the graha nearest the axis, it sets the margin, and a small shift in where Rahu is placed could move it across. The engine reports this by re-testing on the true node and saying whether the verdict would flip; the chart itself keeps the mean node. The Kaal Sarp calculator shows the margin, the nearest graha and that note.
How the sign shifts the picture
Since the engine grades only Mars in this pair, the sign matters through Mars's own dignities, which BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54 fixes: own sign in Aries (moolatrikona for the first 12 degrees) and Scorpio, exaltation in Capricorn (deepest at 28 degrees), fall in Cancer. A Mars-Rahu pair in Capricorn holds an exalted Mars; in Cancer, a debilitated one. Rahu beside it alters neither label.
A reader who follows one of the node traditions quoted in Bhrigu Sutras would add a second layer. By Uttara Kalamrita, Rahu is exalted in Taurus, debilitated in Scorpio and owns Aquarius. By Sanketnidhi, it is exalted in Gemini and owns Virgo. On the first scheme a Mars-Rahu pair in Scorpio would put Mars in its own sign beside a fallen Rahu; on the second, Scorpio would mean nothing special for Rahu at all. The two traditions disagree, Bhrigu Sutras records the disagreement without settling it, and the engine stays out of it by labelling Rahu "Neutral" everywhere. Any such reading is the reader's own addition, not the app's output.
Houses work the same way. The engine has no Mars-Rahu house rule, so a reader should take Mars in the 7th house and Rahu in the 7th house, for example, as two separate readings, and remember that the 7th is one of the houses where the Mangal Dosha rule would fire whether Rahu is there or not.
Worked example: Mars and Rahu in Aries, 5th house
The fixed walk through New Delhi birth moments from 1 January 1985 first finds the pair on 15 March 1985 at 02:56 IST. The birth chart calculator gives Sagittarius rising at 23.1 degrees, so with whole-sign houses Aries is the 5th house.
| Point | Position | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Engine flags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mars | Aries 6.13 | Ashwini (2) | 5 | Moolatrikona; direct; not combust |
| Rahu | Aries 27.65 | Krittika (1) | 5 | Neutral; retrograde |
| Ketu | Libra 27.65 | Vishakha (3) | 11 | Neutral; retrograde |
| Sun | Pisces 0.60 | Purva Bhadrapada (4) | 4 | Friendly sign |
- Same sign? Yes: both in Aries, so the engine records a Mars-Rahu yuti. There is no classical pair reading to apply.
- How far apart? 21.51 degrees. Mars is early in Aries, in Ashwini; Rahu is at the end, in Krittika.
- Mars's dignity? Moolatrikona, because Mars is inside the first 12 degrees of Aries (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54). Rahu beside it changes nothing.
- Combust? No. Mars is 35.53 degrees from the Sun, well outside 17.
- Ruchaka? No. Mars is in its own sign, but the 5th house is not a kendra.
- Mars as a lord? With Sagittarius rising, Mars rules the 5th (Aries, where it sits) and the 12th.
- Yogas detected: Durudhura Yoga, Vesi Yoga, Pasa Yoga, Malavya Yoga, Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga and Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona). Vesi is formed by Mars itself, in Aries, the 2nd sign from the Sun; Rahu in the same sign is not counted. Malavya is Venus exalted in Pisces, a kendra. Dharma-Karmadhipati is the Sun and Mercury, lords of the 9th and 10th, together in Pisces.
A scratch run of the engine's Kaal Sarp check on these details returns "present", in the Ketu-to-Rahu direction: all seven visible grahas lie in the half that runs from Ketu at Libra 27.65 forward to Rahu at Aries 27.65. Mars, 21.51 degrees short of Rahu, is inside it comfortably. The graha closest to the edge is Saturn, 6.78 degrees past Ketu, so here, as often, the conjunction is not what decides the verdict. The same run raises no Mangal Dosha, since the 5th is not on the engine's list. See Mars in the 5th house, Rahu in the 5th house and Mars in Aries.
How often the pair occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars and Rahu shared a sign in 205, or 6.8 per cent. Inside those 205 the mean separation was 9.50 degrees; 72 were within 5 degrees and 16 within 1. Mars was combust in 33 of them and retrograde in 7; Rahu, being the mean node, was retrograde in every one. Each runs its own dasha: the Rahu Mahadasha lasts 18 years and the Mars Mahadasha 7, and in the Vimshottari order Rahu's period follows Mars's directly. Related pairs: Mars-Ketu, Moon-Rahu, Mars-Saturn and Jupiter-Rahu.
- How common is the Mars-Rahu conjunction?
- In this app's engine the two shared a sign in 205 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 6.8 per cent.
- Is there a classical reading for Mars with Rahu?
- Not in this corpus. Saravali's two-planet chapter covers only the seven visible grahas. A Mars-Rahu clause in one translation of Bhrigu Sutras is, according to that book's commentator, not in the Sanskrit text.
- Does Rahu with Mars make Mangal Dosha stronger?
- Not in this app. The engine flags Mangal Dosha from the house Mars is in and from nothing else.
- Does Rahu change Mars's dignity or combustion?
- No. The engine leaves the nodes out of the relationship table and tests combustion against the Sun only.
- Can a Mars-Rahu conjunction decide Kaal Sarp?
- Sometimes. If Mars is the visible graha closest to the Rahu-Ketu axis, it sets the margin of the verdict, and the engine notes whether the true node would flip it. In the worked example Saturn, not Mars, is closest.
- What if Mars and Rahu are together in Scorpio?
- The engine labels Mars "Own sign" and Rahu "Neutral". By Uttara Kalamrita, as quoted in Bhrigu Sutras, Rahu would be debilitated there; by Sanketnidhi it would not. The app follows neither.
- Does "Rahu acts like Saturn" apply here?
- Bhrigu Sutras reports that belief but gives no rule for it, and this app does not use it. The Mars-Saturn page covers what the texts say about that pair directly.
- Does the app suggest a remedy for Mars with Rahu?
- No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
