The Moon and Rahu in one sign: why Saravali has no line for it, what BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras say about Rahu, why Rahu does not count for the Moon's yogas in this app, and a worked chart in Aries.

In short

The Moon and Rahu share a sign in about 8 per cent of sampled birth moments. Saravali's two-planet chapter has no line for this pair, because it covers only the seven visible grahas; BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras describe Rahu on its own. In this app Rahu is never combust, has no sign lordship, and does not count towards the Moon's Sunapha, Anapha or Kemadruma rules.

Rahu is not a body you can see. It is a point, the Moon's ascending node, and the Moon's own orbit defines it. That makes the Moon-Rahu yuti unusual: the Moon is sitting in the same sign as one of the two places where her own path crosses the Sun's. In this app a conjunction means the same whole sign, with no orb, so the two count as conjunct whether they are 1 degree apart or 25. For each on its own, read the Moon in Vedic astrology and Rahu in Vedic astrology.

The Moon and Rahu as the texts describe them

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 names Rahu and Ketu as "the ascending and the descending nodes of Candr" and counts both as malefics. The same sloka counts the Moon a malefic only when she is decreasing. Sl. 12-13 make the Moon the mind. Sl. 30 describes Rahu as smoky in appearance, windy in temperament and intelligent, and says Ketu is akin to him. In the "cabinet" of Sl. 14-15 the Moon is royal while Rahu and Ketu are the army. Rahu is a chhaya graha, a shadow planet, which is why the older rules about rays and visibility do not apply to it.

Bhrigu Sutras (Part I) gives the astronomy and the legend side by side. The astronomy: the nodes are the two points where the Moon's orbit cuts the Sun's apparent path, they are exactly 180 degrees apart, their motion is always retrograde at about 19 degrees 20 minutes a year, and Rahu stays in a sign for about 18 months. The legend: the severed asura whose head became Rahu, and who for that reason is called an enemy of the Sun and the Moon, "swallowing" them at eclipses. The book reports the legend as legend and then turns to the mechanics.

On friendship the classical tables are silent about Rahu. This app's natural relationship table, taken from Kannan, lists only the seven visible grahas, and the code comment says the nodes are excluded from dignity scoring. That is why every chart in this app shows Rahu's dignity as "Neutral". Bhrigu Sutras also records that the ancients disagreed about which signs Rahu owns and where it is exalted: Uttara Kalamrita and Sanketnidhi give different answers. The engine takes no side.

What the classical texts say about the Moon with Rahu

Very little directly, and this page will not fill the gap. Saravali Ch. 15, the chapter on two planets in one house, runs from the Sun-Moon yoga in Sl. 2 to Venus-Saturn in Sl. 22. Every pair in it is drawn from the seven visible grahas; the nodes are not among them. BPHS has no two-planet chapter. So there is no classical one-line reading for the Moon with Rahu in this corpus, and anything presented as one would be borrowed from elsewhere.

What the texts do give is a set of general rules that bear on the pair. Rahu is malefic (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11). Bhrigu Sutras records the belief that "Rahu acts like Saturn", a view this app does not encode. And BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 47 puts the Moon and Rahu in the same class, Dhatu grahas, along with Mars and Saturn. Read together these say how each graha is classified, not what the pair produces.

Where the sources disagree: Rahu's signs

The disagreement Bhrigu Sutras records is worth spelling out, because it changes how a Moon-Rahu conjunction in some signs would be graded. By Uttara Kalamrita, as Bhrigu Sutras quotes it, Rahu is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio, owns Aquarius, and has Gemini as its mooltrikona. Sanketnidhi instead gives Gemini as Rahu's exaltation and Virgo as its own sign. The Moon's dignities are not in dispute: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 makes Taurus her exaltation and Scorpio her fall.

So a Moon-Rahu conjunction in Taurus is, on one ancient reading, both grahas exalted together; on the other, only the Moon. In Scorpio it would be both debilitated on the first reading. This app does not choose between them. It grades the Moon by her own BPHS dignities and labels Rahu "Neutral" in every sign, so the engine's output for the pair never depends on which node tradition a reader follows. A reader who uses one of those traditions can add that layer by hand.

Why the silence matters

Pages elsewhere often give long readings for the Moon with Rahu. In the sources this site works from there is no such reading to quote. This page reports the absence rather than writing one.

Node pairs: what the engine does and does not do with Rahu

The engine computes Rahu as the mean node and Ketu as the point exactly opposite. Both are always marked retrograde, in line with Bhrigu Sutras. Four consequences follow for this pair, and each comes straight from the code.

  1. Rahu is never combust. The combustion orbs in computeChart cover the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn; there is no entry for the nodes. The Moon can still be combust (within 12 degrees of the Sun), which happened in 127 of the 1,675 Moon-Rahu charts in a random sample of 20,000.
  2. Rahu does not count for the lunar yogas. Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura use only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. The code comment explains why: Saravali Ch. 13 names those five and never the nodes.
  3. Rahu does not prevent Kemadruma. A visible graha in the Moon's sign does, but Rahu is not on that list. (In the random sample no Moon-Rahu chart had Kemadruma, but that is because some other graha always broke the condition, not because of Rahu.)
  4. Rahu owns no house. The engine's sign lords are the seven visible grahas, so Rahu never forms a lordship yoga such as Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga, whatever it sits with.

Rahu does matter to one rule the app runs: Kaal Sarp. That rule (computeKaalSarp) does not look at signs at all. It measures each of the seven grahas' longitude forward from Rahu and asks whether every one of them falls strictly between 0 and 180 degrees, or every one strictly between 180 and 360. A Moon in Rahu's sign is therefore not "on the axis" in the engine's sense. If she is a few degrees past Rahu in zodiac order she sits at the start of the Rahu-to-Ketu half; if she is a few degrees short of Rahu she sits at the end of the Ketu-to-Rahu half.

That has a practical effect for this pair. When the Moon is close to Rahu, she can be the graha nearest the edge of the axis, and a small change in where Rahu is put can move her across it. The engine reports exactly this: it re-runs the test on the true node as a diagnostic and says when the verdict would flip, while the chart itself keeps the mean node. The Kaal Sarp calculator shows the margin and that note for any chart. Only when the Moon lands exactly on Rahu's longitude does the engine's stated policy apply: on the axis counts as outside, a choice the code comment calls "a decision, not a finding".

Worked example: Moon and Rahu in Aries, 8th house

The search walks forward through New Delhi birth moments from 1 January 1985 and stops at the first with the Moon and Rahu in one sign. Birth: 24 February 1985, 21:42 IST, New Delhi. In the birth chart calculator the ascendant is Virgo at 28.04 degrees, so with whole-sign houses Aries is the 8th house.

  1. Same sign? Yes, both in Aries, so the engine counts a Moon-Rahu yuti. No Saravali line applies, because there is none for this pair.
  2. How far apart? 22.39 degrees. The Moon is early in Aries, in Ashwini; Rahu is at the far end, already in Krittika. A nakshatra-level reading would put them in different stars.
  3. Phase? The Moon is 53.86 degrees ahead of the Sun, so she is waxing, in the bright half. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 therefore does not class her as malefic here.
  4. Combust? Neither. The Moon is far from the Sun, and Rahu is never tested.
  5. Yogas detected: Anapha Yoga, Ubhayachari Yoga, Pasa Yoga, Argala Raj Yoga, Malavya Yoga and Vimala Yoga. Anapha comes from Mars and Venus in Pisces, the 12th from the Moon; Rahu plays no part in it. Malavya comes from Venus exalted in Pisces, a kendra (the 7th).

The same chart, run through the engine's dosha checks (a separate scratch run of computeKaalSarp and detectDoshas on these birth details), does show Kaal Sarp present, in the Ketu-to-Rahu direction. Every one of the seven grahas lies in the half from Ketu at Libra 28.61 round to Rahu at Aries 28.61. The Moon, 22.39 degrees short of Rahu, is well inside that half. The graha closest to the edge is Saturn, at Scorpio 4.37, 5.76 degrees past Ketu. So the conjunction is not what decides the verdict here; Saturn's position is. The same run flags Mangal Dosha as moderate, because Mars is in the 7th house. That has nothing to do with the Moon or Rahu either: the engine's Mangal rule looks only at Mars's house.

Nothing in that list is a rule about the Moon and Rahu, which is typical: the engine has no such rule. For the house and sign, see the Moon in the 8th house, Rahu in the 8th house and the Moon in Aries.

How often the pair occurs

Of 20,000 random birth moments 1950-2050 (times drawn uniformly at random with a fixed seed, New Delhi, run through the engine from a scratch script), the Moon and Rahu shared a sign in 1,675, or 8.4 per cent. The mechanism is simple: Rahu moves about 3 minutes of arc a day (BPHS Ch. 3 commentary) and stays in a sign for roughly a year and a half, while the Moon, at 13-15 degrees a day, crosses that sign once a month. Inside the 1,675 the average separation was 10.07 degrees; 507 were within 5 degrees and 134 within 1 degree.

The Moon and Ketu share a sign at a similar rate in the same sample (see the Moon-Ketu conjunction). The two pages are mirror images: a Moon with Rahu always has Ketu in the 7th sign from her, and the other way round. Timing in this app runs through each graha's own dasha: see the Rahu Mahadasha and the Moon Mahadasha. Other pairs with these grahas: Sun-Rahu, Mars-Rahu and Moon-Saturn.

How common is the Moon-Rahu conjunction?
In this app's engine the two shared a sign in 1,675 of 20,000 random birth moments 1950-2050 sampled at random, or 8.4 per cent.
Does Saravali give a reading for the Moon with Rahu?
No. Its chapter on two-planet combinations (Ch. 15) covers pairs of the seven visible grahas only. This page does not invent a reading to fill that gap.
Can Rahu be combust when it is with the Moon?
Not in this app. The engine has combustion orbs for the Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, and none for the nodes.
Does Rahu beside the Moon cancel Kemadruma?
No. The engine counts only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn for the Moon's yogas, following Saravali Ch. 13, which never names the nodes.
Why does Rahu always show as retrograde and neutral?
The nodes always move backwards through the zodiac (Bhrigu Sutras gives about 19 degrees 20 minutes a year), and the engine excludes them from the friendship table it uses for dignity, so it labels them Neutral.
Does a Moon-Rahu conjunction mean Kaal Sarp?
No. Kaal Sarp in this app depends on all seven grahas lying on one side of the Rahu-Ketu axis, measured in degrees. A Moon near Rahu can sit on either side of it, and she matters to the verdict only if she is the graha closest to the edge. The worked example has Kaal Sarp, but Saturn, not the Moon, sets its margin.
Is the Moon with Rahu exalted in Taurus?
The Moon is, by BPHS. Rahu is exalted there only on the Uttara Kalamrita reading quoted in Bhrigu Sutras; Sanketnidhi puts its exaltation in Gemini. The engine labels Rahu Neutral in every sign.
Does the app suggest a remedy for the Moon with Rahu?
No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
