In short
The Moon and Ketu share a sign in about 8 per cent of sampled birth moments, and Rahu then always sits in the 7th sign from the Moon. No classical text in this corpus gives a reading for the pair. In this app Ketu has no combustion, no lordship and no part in the Moon's yogas, so what fires in such a chart comes from the other grahas.
Ketu is the other end of the line that Rahu starts. Where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path going north, the point is Rahu; going south, it is Ketu, and the two are always exactly opposite. A Moon-Ketu yuti is the Moon in the sign that holds the descending node. As everywhere on this site, conjunction means the same whole sign; the engine sets no orb. The separate pages on the Moon in Vedic astrology and Ketu in Vedic astrology cover each one alone.
The Moon and Ketu as the texts describe them
BPHS gives Ketu almost no description of its own. Ch. 3 Sl. 30 spends its words on Rahu and then says only that "Ketu is akin to Rahu". Ketu is a shadow graha and, by Sl. 11, a malefic. The differences BPHS does draw are small and specific. In Sl. 41-44 Rahu is given multi-coloured clothes and Ketu rags. In Sl. 45-46 Rahu is assigned 8 months and Ketu 3. And Sl. 47, which sorts the grahas into Dhatu, Mula and Jiva classes, puts Rahu with the Moon among the Dhatu grahas but sends Ketu to the Jiva group with Mercury and Jupiter.
That last point is the one place in BPHS where the Moon and Ketu land on different sides of a line that the Moon and Rahu share. It is a classification, not a reading of the conjunction, and this page draws no conclusion from it beyond noting it.
Bhrigu Sutras (Part I) adds two things. First, the astronomy: the descending node is the crossing made "when the Moon's motion is from north to south". Second, a belief it reports without endorsing, that "Ketu acts like Mars", just as Rahu is said to act like Saturn. This app does not encode either belief. The engine excludes both nodes from its natural relationship table, so Ketu's dignity always shows as "Neutral".
What the classical texts say about the Moon with Ketu
Saravali Ch. 15, the corpus's chapter on two planets in one house, has twenty-one pair readings, and all of them are pairs of the seven visible grahas. Ketu appears in none. BPHS has no chapter of that kind. There is, then, no classical one-line reading of the Moon with Ketu to report from the sources this site uses, and this page does not supply one.
The nearest thing to a classical statement is the dignity question, and there the sources openly disagree. Bhrigu Sutras quotes Uttara Kalamrita as making Ketu's exaltation and fall the reverse of Rahu's, which puts Ketu's exaltation in Scorpio, its own sign in Scorpio and its mooltrikona in Virgo. Sanketnidhi, in the same passage, gives Ketu Sagittarius as exaltation and Pisces as its own sign.
Set beside the Moon, whose fall is in Scorpio by BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50, the Uttara Kalamrita scheme produces an odd case: a Moon-Ketu conjunction in Scorpio would hold a debilitated Moon beside an exalted Ketu. Under Sanketnidhi the same pair in Scorpio has no special dignity for Ketu at all. The engine follows neither and grades only the Moon.
Reported, not adopted
Where the texts are silent this page says so and stops. Where two texts disagree, both are given and the engine's own choice is stated.
Node pairs: Ketu and the Moon's own yogas
The most concrete thing this app does with a Moon-Ketu conjunction is to ignore Ketu where the Moon's yogas are concerned. Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura are formed by grahas in the 2nd and 12th signs from the Moon, and the engine counts only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn. The code comment gives the reason: Saravali Ch. 13 names those five and never the nodes.
The same list decides Kemadruma. That condition needs no such graha in the 2nd, the 12th or any kendra from the Moon, and no aspect on her. A visible graha in the Moon's own sign would break it. Ketu there does not. So a Moon with only Ketu for company is, as far as this rule goes, treated as alone. Whether Kemadruma then fires depends on the other grahas, as the worked example below shows.
- Combustion: not tested for Ketu. The engine's combustion orbs have no node entry. The Moon is tested (12 degrees) and was combust in 126 of the 1,705 Moon-Ketu charts in a random sample of 20,000 birth moments.
- Lordship: none. Ketu rules no sign in the engine's table, so it never forms a lordship yoga such as Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga.
- Kaal Sarp: decided in degrees from Rahu, not by sign. With Ketu beside the Moon, the Moon is near the Ketu end of the axis and can fall on either side of it. The Kaal Sarp calculator reports which, and how close it is.
Worked example: Moon and Ketu in Leo, 4th house
This is the first chart a fixed walk through New Delhi birth moments finds with the Moon and Ketu in one sign. Birth: 30 March 1988, 10:10 IST, New Delhi. In the birth chart calculator the rising sign is Taurus at 25.64 degrees, so with whole-sign houses Leo is the 4th house.
| Point | Position | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Engine flags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moon | Leo 10.66 | Magha (4) | 4 | Neutral; not combust |
| Ketu | Leo 28.76 | Uttara Phalguni (1) | 4 | Neutral; retrograde |
| Rahu | Aquarius 28.76 | Purva Bhadrapada (3) | 10 | Neutral; retrograde |
| Mercury | Aquarius 26.58 | Purva Bhadrapada (2) | 10 | Friendly sign |
| Sun | Pisces 16.01 | Uttara Bhadrapada (4) | 11 | Friendly sign |
- Same sign? Yes: both in Leo. The engine counts the yuti; no classical pair reading exists to apply.
- How far apart? 18.09 degrees. Ketu is in the last degrees of Leo and already in the next nakshatra, Uttara Phalguni, while the Moon is in Magha.
- Phase? The Moon is 144.65 degrees ahead of the Sun, waxing and well into the bright half, so BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 does not class her as malefic.
- The Moon's yogas? Virgo (2nd from the Moon) and Cancer (12th) hold no visible graha, so there is no Sunapha, Anapha or Durudhura. Ketu, in her own sign, does not count.
- Kemadruma? Not flagged. Mercury in Aquarius stands in the 7th sign from the Moon, a kendra, and that breaks the condition. Ketu beside her would not have.
- Yogas detected: Ubhayachari Yoga, Veena Yoga, Maala Yoga, Amala Yoga, Argala Raj Yoga, Malavya Yoga and Sarala Yoga. Amala comes from Venus in Taurus, the 10th from the Moon; Malavya from the same Venus in its own sign in the 1st house. None involves Ketu.
A scratch run of the engine's Kaal Sarp check on these birth details returns "absent": the grahas are spread across both halves of the axis. For the house and sign pages, see the Moon in the 4th house, Ketu in the 4th house and the Moon in Leo. The example shows mechanics only; it is not a reading of anyone born at that moment.
Where Ketu meets the Moon's dasha
There is one place where the engine does connect the Moon and Ketu, and it is not a yoga. The Vimshottari dasha sequence starts from the lord of the Moon's nakshatra at birth (vimshottariTimeline in the astrology engine). The sequence runs Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, and repeats three times round the 27 nakshatras. Ketu therefore heads the 1st, 10th and 19th nakshatras: Ashwini, Magha and Mula, each beginning at 0 degrees of a fire sign (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius).
The worked example sits right on this. The Moon at Leo 10.66 is in Magha, whose lord is Ketu, so the chart's first Mahadasha is Ketu's own. Magha spans the first 13 degrees 20 minutes of Leo, and the Moon has covered about four-fifths of it, so by the engine's rule only about a fifth of Ketu's 7 years, roughly 1.4 years, remains at birth before Venus's 20 begin. That is arithmetic on the engine's own formula, and the Vimshottari dasha calculator shows the exact dates.
This does not follow from the conjunction itself. A Moon-Ketu pair in Leo with the Moon past 13 degrees 20 minutes is in Purva Phalguni instead, a Venus nakshatra, and the chart starts in Venus's dasha. And a Moon in Magha has Ketu as her first dasha lord wherever Ketu happens to be. The overlap is a coincidence of the two systems, worth noticing because it is the only point where the engine's output ties the Moon to Ketu by name.
Sign and house do the rest
Because no rule in the engine is written for the pair, what changes from one Moon-Ketu chart to the next is the Moon's own condition: her sign dignity (exalted in Taurus, fallen in Scorpio, own sign Cancer), her phase, her house from the ascendant, and the grahas in the 2nd, 12th and kendras from her. Ketu's house is fixed by hers, and Rahu's by Ketu's. A reader who wants the pair in a given house should read the two house pages side by side, for instance the Moon in the 10th house with Ketu in the 10th house, and then check which of the Moon's yogas the yogas calculator actually finds.
The astronomy behind the pair
Bhrigu Sutras explains the nodes geometrically: the planes of the Sun's and the Moon's apparent paths are inclined to each other by about 5 degrees, and the nodes are where the two cross. So a Moon close to Ketu is close to the Sun's path, and a Moon far from both nodes can be up to that inclination off it. The engine works in longitude only and does not report the Moon's latitude, so this page goes no further than the book does.
How often the pair occurs
Of 20,000 random birth moments 1950-2050 (times drawn uniformly at random with a fixed seed, New Delhi, run through the engine from a scratch script), the Moon and Ketu shared a sign in 1,705, or 8.5 per cent. Within those the mean separation was 10.22 degrees; 504 were within 5 degrees and 113 within 1 degree. The Moon-Rahu figure from the same sample is 1,675. The two should occur equally often over a long span, since the Moon passes each node's sign once a month; the small gap is the sample, and this page reads nothing into it. The closeness figures are also worth a look before reading anything into "a Moon on Ketu": fewer than one in three of these charts had the two within 5 degrees, and most were simply sharing a sign at a distance.
For timing, each graha runs its own dasha: see the Ketu Mahadasha and the Moon Mahadasha. The mirror page is the Moon-Rahu conjunction; other Ketu pairs include Sun-Ketu and Mars-Ketu.
- How common is the Moon-Ketu conjunction?
- In this app's engine the two shared a sign in 1,705 of 20,000 random birth moments 1950-2050 sampled at random, or 8.5 per cent.
- If my Moon is with Ketu, where is Rahu?
- Always in the 7th sign from the Moon. The engine places Ketu exactly 180 degrees from Rahu, so the two nodes occupy opposite signs.
- Is there a classical reading for the Moon with Ketu?
- Not in this corpus. Saravali's two-planet chapter covers the seven visible grahas only, and BPHS has no such chapter.
- Does Ketu next to the Moon prevent Kemadruma?
- No. The engine counts only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn when it tests the Moon, following Saravali Ch. 13. In the worked example Kemadruma is avoided because of Mercury in the 7th from the Moon, not because of Ketu.
- Where is Ketu exalted?
- The sources disagree. Bhrigu Sutras quotes Uttara Kalamrita (the reverse of Rahu, so Scorpio) and Sanketnidhi (Sagittarius). The engine uses neither and labels Ketu Neutral.
- Does a Moon-Ketu conjunction start life in Ketu's dasha?
- Only if the Moon is in one of Ketu's nakshatras (Ashwini, Magha or Mula). The first dasha comes from the Moon's nakshatra, not from the grahas beside her. In the worked example the Moon is in Magha, so the first Mahadasha is Ketu's, with about 1.4 years left at birth.
- Does the app suggest a remedy for the Moon with Ketu?
- No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
