Mars and Ketu in one sign: what BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras say about Ketu, why Saravali has no line for the pair, the Scorpio question in Uttara Kalamrita, what the engine ignores, and a worked chart in Libra on a knife-edge ascendant.

In short

Mars and Ketu share a sign in about 8 per cent of sampled charts. Bhrigu Sutras reports a belief that Ketu acts like Mars, but no text in this corpus gives the pair a usable reading. In this app Ketu does not alter Mars's dignity, combustion, yogas or Mangal Dosha, and the engine labels Ketu "Neutral" in every sign.

If Ketu really "acts like Mars", as a belief recorded in Bhrigu Sutras has it, then a Mars-Ketu conjunction would be two of a kind in one sign. The sources this site works from never test that idea, and neither does the engine. This page sets out what is actually there. A yuti here is Mars and Ketu in the same whole sign, with no orb, so the separation in degrees is reported only as extra detail. For the single grahas see Mars in Vedic astrology and Ketu in Vedic astrology.

Mars and Ketu as the texts describe them

BPHS gives Ketu almost no description of its own: Ch. 3 Sl. 30 describes Rahu and then says "Ketu is akin to Rahu". Both nodes are malefics by Sl. 11, as Mars is. Ketu is a shadow graha, the descending node of the Moon. Where BPHS does separate Ketu from Mars, it does so in passing lists. Sl. 47 puts Mars among the Dhatu grahas and Ketu among the Jiva grahas, with Mercury and Jupiter. Sl. 45-46 give Mars the summer season, Greeshma, and Ketu a span of 3 months. Sl. 14-15 make Mars the army's commander and the two nodes the army.

That Sl. 47 classification is the mirror of the Mars-Rahu case, where Mars and Rahu sit together among the Dhatu grahas. It is the only point in BPHS where Ketu and Rahu part company in relation to Mars, and the text draws no conclusion from it. Neither does this page.

On friendship the classical tables are silent, and the engine's table of natural relationships leaves both nodes out. In practice that means Ketu has no effect on how the engine grades Mars, and Ketu's own label is "Neutral" in every chart.

Scorpio: where two traditions point at Mars's sign

Bhrigu Sutras (Part I) quotes two older works on the nodes' signs and lets the disagreement stand. Uttara Kalamrita makes Rahu exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio, "vice versa of Ketu", and gives Ketu Scorpio as its own sign and Virgo as its mooltrikona. So on that scheme Ketu is both exalted in and owner of Scorpio, which is also Mars's own sign. Sanketnidhi disagrees: it gives Ketu Sagittarius as exaltation and Pisces as its own sign.

For this pair the difference is sharp. A Mars-Ketu conjunction in Scorpio is, by Uttara Kalamrita, two grahas at home together; by Sanketnidhi, Mars at home with a Ketu that has no special dignity there. The engine follows neither: it grades Mars in Scorpio as own sign and Ketu as "Neutral". Anyone applying either tradition is adding a layer the app does not compute.

What the classical texts say about Mars with Ketu

Saravali Ch. 15, the corpus's collection of two-planet readings, covers only pairs of the seven visible grahas; Ketu is in none of its twenty-one slokas. BPHS has no such chapter. There is therefore no classical one-line reading of Mars with Ketu in this corpus.

Bhrigu Sutras does have a sutra that mentions Mars "associated with Ketu", in its section on Mars in the 7th house. It is about marital and sexual conduct, and this page does not repeat it, for two reasons. The book's own commentator says the text of those sutras is "so confusing that it is difficult to comment upon", and it is a claim about a person's private life that this app would not make. It is also limited to the 7th house, so it would not apply to a Mars-Ketu pair anywhere else.

The gap is the finding

For this pair, the honest summary of the classical material is short: Ketu resembles Rahu, a belief links Ketu with Mars, and one house-specific sutra is obscure even to its commentator. The page stops there.

Node pairs: what Ketu changes in the engine

  • Dignity: nothing. Mars is graded on its own sign as if Ketu were absent.
  • Combustion: Mars is tested against the Sun (17 degrees) as usual; Ketu is never tested, because the engine's combustion orbs have no entry for the nodes.
  • Solar and lunar yogas: Ketu is not counted. Vasi, Vesi, Ubhayachari, Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura use only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, so Mars can form them and Ketu beside it cannot.
  • Lordship yogas: Ketu rules no sign in the engine, so it never makes a Kendra-Kona, Dharma-Karmadhipati or Raja Yoga link.
  • Mangal Dosha: unchanged. The rule reads Mars's house only.
  • Kaal Sarp: possibly. With Ketu beside it, Mars is near the Ketu end of the Rahu-Ketu axis, and if it is the visible graha closest to that end it sets the verdict's margin. The Kaal Sarp calculator shows the nearest graha and whether the true node would flip the result.

And one more fixed relation: Ketu is always exactly opposite Rahu, so a Mars-Ketu conjunction always has Rahu in the 7th sign from Mars. Mars aspects the 7th from itself, which means in every Mars-Ketu chart Mars's 7th-house aspect falls on Rahu's sign.

Sign by sign: the engine's view and the node traditions

Two layers can be read for any sign the pair falls in. The first is the engine's: Mars graded by its BPHS dignities, Ketu always "Neutral". The second is optional and belongs to the reader: Ketu's dignity under one of the two traditions Bhrigu Sutras quotes. The table lists only the signs where at least one layer says something specific.

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-54 for Mars; Bhrigu Sutras Part I for the two node traditions. The engine uses only the second column.

Only the Mars column feeds anything the app computes. In Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn, if that sign is a kendra from the ascendant, Mars forms Ruchaka Yoga whether Ketu is there or not. In Cancer, Mars is debilitated whatever Ketu's tradition-based dignity might be. The two node columns disagree with each other in every row, which is the best reason the engine gives for leaving them out.

Houses are read the same way: the house pages for Mars and for Ketu, taken side by side. The engine's house-based rules that involve Mars, Mangal Dosha and the lordship yogas, look at Mars and at the sign lords; Ketu is not part of any of them. A Mars-Ketu pair in the 7th raises a moderate Mangal Dosha flag because Mars is in the 7th, and a Mars-Ketu pair in the 10th raises none, as the example below shows.

Worked example: Mars and Ketu in Libra, 10th house

The fixed walk through New Delhi birth moments from 1 January 1985 first finds the pair on 13 December 1985 at 09:26 IST. The birth chart calculator gives Capricorn rising at 0.16 degrees, so with whole-sign houses Libra is the 10th house.

  1. Same sign? Yes: both in Libra. The engine records a Mars-Ketu yuti; no classical pair reading exists to apply.
  2. How far apart? 7.82 degrees. Mars is in Chitra, Ketu in Swati.
  3. Combust? Mars is 52.09 degrees from the Sun, so no; Ketu is not tested.
  4. Mars as a lord? With Capricorn rising, Mars rules the 4th (Aries) and the 11th (Scorpio). Rahu is in Aries, Mars's own sign, in the 4th: the axis runs from one of Mars's houses to the house Mars occupies.
  5. Parivarthana? Yes, between Mars and Venus: Mars is in Libra, Venus's sign, and Venus is in Scorpio, Mars's sign. This is the one yoga in the chart that involves Mars directly, and Ketu has no part in it.
  6. Other yogas detected: Durudhura Yoga, Vasi Yoga, Kedara Yoga, Danda Yoga, Raja Yoga and Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona). Vasi is formed by Mars itself, in Libra, the 12th sign from the Sun. The Raja Yoga is Venus and Mercury, lords of the 5th and 9th, together in Scorpio.
  7. Kaal Sarp and Mangal Dosha? A scratch run of the dosha checks finds neither. The 10th is not a Mangal house.

An ascendant on the edge

This example carries a caution that applies to every chart. The ascendant is Capricorn at 0.16 degrees, barely past the boundary with Sagittarius. With a slightly earlier birth time the rising sign would be Sagittarius, every whole-sign house would shift by one, and the Mars-Ketu pair would sit in the 11th instead of the 10th, with different lordships and possibly different yogas. The conjunction itself would not change, since it depends only on the two grahas' signs. Before reading anything into the house, check that the birth time is reliable. See Mars in the 10th house, Ketu in the 10th house and Mars in Libra.

What this page does not claim

Popular writing often gives this pair a strong character of its own. The sources behind this site do not. They describe Ketu by reference to Rahu, record an unproven belief that Ketu behaves like Mars, disagree about Ketu's signs, and offer one 7th-house clause that their own commentator struggles with. The engine, for its part, treats Ketu as a point that occupies a sign, anchors the Kaal Sarp axis and starts the Vimshottari sequence, and nothing more. This page reports both of those facts and stops short of combining them into a description of anyone born with Mars and Ketu together. If a fuller reading is wanted, the place to look is Mars's own sign, house and lordships, which the engine does compute in detail.

How often the pair occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars and Ketu shared a sign in 247, or 8.2 per cent. The mean separation was 9.54 degrees; 89 were within 5 degrees and 17 within 1. Mars was combust in 35 and retrograde in 22. For timing, the Ketu Mahadasha lasts 7 years and so does the Mars Mahadasha. In the engine's Vimshottari sequence (Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, and on), the two equal periods sit four places apart. Related pairs: Mars-Rahu, Moon-Ketu, Mars-Venus and Sun-Mars.

How common is the Mars-Ketu conjunction?
In this app's engine the two shared a sign in 247 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 8.2 per cent.
Does Ketu act like Mars?
Bhrigu Sutras reports that belief, alongside "Rahu acts like Saturn", but gives no rule for it. The engine does not use it.
Is there a classical reading for Mars with Ketu?
Not a general one. Saravali's two-planet chapter covers only the seven visible grahas. Bhrigu Sutras has a Mars-with-Ketu clause for the 7th house only, which its own commentator calls confusing.
Does Ketu with Mars affect Mangal Dosha?
Not in this app. Mangal Dosha is flagged from Mars's house alone.
If Mars is with Ketu, where is Rahu?
Always in the 7th sign from Mars, because the engine places the nodes exactly 180 degrees apart. That is also the sign Mars aspects with its 7th-house aspect.
Is Ketu strong in Scorpio with Mars?
By Uttara Kalamrita, as quoted in Bhrigu Sutras, Ketu owns and is exalted in Scorpio; by Sanketnidhi it is not. The engine labels Ketu Neutral everywhere.
Can Mars with Ketu still form Ruchaka Yoga?
Yes. Ruchaka depends only on Mars being in its own or exaltation sign (Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn) in a kendra. Ketu beside it neither adds to nor cancels the rule.
Does the app suggest a remedy for Mars with Ketu?
No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
