In short
Mars and Venus share a sign in about 14 per cent of sampled charts. Saravali reads the pair as leadership, respect and skill with numbers, alongside gambling and untruth. BPHS says that if they are within a degree Venus wins the planetary war, but this app does not compute war; it flags each graha's combustion and dignity and has no yoga for the pair itself.
BPHS pairs Mars and Venus as male and female, fire and water, summer and spring. When the two occupy the same sign this app records a yuti. As on every conjunction page here, that means the same whole sign; the engine applies no orb, and the distance in degrees is reported only because combustion and the classical war rule depend on it. For each graha separately, see Mars in Vedic astrology and Venus in Vedic astrology.
Mars and Venus as the texts describe them
BPHS Ch. 3 lays the two side by side in list after list. Sl. 19: Mars male, Venus female. Sl. 20: Mars governs fire, Venus water. Sl. 31, the seven bodily constituents: Mars marrow, Venus semen. Sl. 32, their abodes: a place of fire for Mars, the bedroom for Venus. Sl. 45-46, the seasons: Venus rules Vasanta (spring) and Mars Greeshma (summer), the two seasons that follow each other. Sl. 12-13 give Mars strength and Venus potency. In the cabinet of Sl. 14-15, Mars commands the army and Venus is a minister. Even the minor lists keep the contrast: in Sl. 34 Mars has the bitter taste and Venus the acidulous, and in Sl. 39-40 Mars rules bitter plants while Venus rules flowering ones. And Sl. 11 makes Mars a malefic, Venus a benefic.
Their natural relationship is neutral in both directions. Bhrigu Sutras (Part I) says Venus and Saturn are neutral to Mars, and Mars and Jupiter neutral to Venus. The engine's table (Kannan's) leaves each out of the other's friend and enemy lists, which is the same thing. Neither likes nor dislikes the other.
Neutral by nature, enemies when they share a sign
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 adds the temporary relationship, read from the actual chart: grahas in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from each other become temporary friends, and any other position, including the same sign, makes them temporary enemies. Sl. 57-58 say neutral plus enmity gives enmity. So whenever Mars is in Taurus or Libra with Venus beside it, or Venus is in Aries or Scorpio with Mars beside it, the guest is graded in an enemy's sign. A scratch run of the engine's dignityOf over the 3,000-moment sample gives "Enemy sign" in every such case.
The exaltation signs never coincide. Mars is exalted in Capricorn and falls in Cancer; Venus is exalted in Pisces and falls in Virgo (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50). A Mars-Venus pair in Pisces therefore holds an exalted Venus beside a Mars in Jupiter's sign, and in Capricorn an exalted Mars beside a Venus in Saturn's sign, Saturn being one of Venus's friends.
What the classical texts say about Mars with Venus
Saravali Ch. 15 is the two-planet chapter, and Sl. 15 belongs to this pair. In this translation, one who had Mars and Venus together at birth will be worshipped, be chief among his men, be a mathematician (the translator adds "or an astrologer"), and be fond of gambling, untruth and the like.
The line runs in two directions at once. Its first half is about standing: respect, leadership of a group, skill with calculation. Its second half is a pair of vices. Nothing in the sloka says which half outweighs the other, and it sets no distance, sign or house. The chapter's last verse, Sl. 23, says every such reading is increased or decreased by the vargas the two occupy, which is the text's own instruction not to read one line in isolation.
BPHS has no two-planet chapter and no yoga named for Mangal with Sukr. Its contribution is general: the natures above, the relationship rules, and one specific statement about war between them, below.
What this page does not do
It does not turn Saravali's line into a statement about a reader. The app attaches no reading, score or remedy to the conjunction.
Planetary war: the one pair where BPHS names the winner in advance
BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 9 defines graha yuddha: Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn within one degree of each other are at war. For most pairs the winner is whichever is further north. Venus is the exception. In the sloka's words, "Sukr is the conquerer, whether he is in North, or South". So for a Mars-Venus war, BPHS needs no latitude at all: Venus wins and Mars is the defeated graha. Ch. 27 Sl. 20 then moves the difference between their Shad Balas to Venus.
This app does not compute planetary war, even for this pair where the rule would be easy to apply. There is no war rule anywhere in the server code, and the Shad Bala the app shows is not adjusted for one. In the 3,000-moment sample, 37 of the 429 Mars-Venus charts had the two within a degree. For those charts the app shows the conjunction and the separation, and a reader applying BPHS by hand would count Mars as the defeated one.
Combustion and closeness
Venus stays fairly close to the Sun, so a Mars-Venus pair often has the Sun nearby. The engine tests combustion for each separately by the shortest arc to the sidereal Sun: Mars within 17 degrees, Venus within 10, or within 8 when Venus is retrograde. A combust graha's positional strength is zeroed in Shad Bala.
| In the 429 Mars-Venus charts | Count |
|---|---|
| Mars combust | 95 |
| Venus combust | 70 |
| Both combust | 64 |
| Venus retrograde | 34 |
| Mars retrograde | 0 |
| Within 5 degrees of each other | 149 |
The zero is worth noting: in this sample Mars was never retrograde while sharing a sign with Venus. The same was true when Mars shared a sign with Mercury. Both Venus and Mercury stay near the Sun, and in this sample a retrograde Mars was never found in their company.
Reading the separation
The separation tells a reader which of these rules is even in play. Of the 429 sampled conjunctions, 149 had the two within 5 degrees, a little over a third, and 37 within 1 degree, the BPHS war range. The rest shared a sign at a distance, where neither the war rule nor any closeness argument applies and only the sign-level reading of Saravali remains. Venus's retrograde phase also changes the arithmetic: in the 34 charts with Venus retrograde, its combustion limit was 8 degrees instead of 10, so a retrograde Venus 9 degrees from the Sun is not combust in this app while a direct one is.
None of these distances changes whether the engine calls the pair conjunct. That test stays the sign, so a Venus at 0 degrees of a sign and a Mars at 29 degrees of it are a Mars-Venus yuti here, while the same two a degree apart across a sign boundary are not.
Yogas this pair can be part of
- No rule in the engine is named for Mars with Venus. The yogas calculator lists what does fire in a chart.
- Malavya and Ruchaka each need their graha in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra. Mars beside Venus neither adds to Malavya nor blocks it, and the same holds the other way. In Aries or Scorpio only Ruchaka can qualify; in Taurus, Libra or Pisces only Malavya.
- Lordship yogas. Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus Taurus and Libra. For several ascendants one rules a kendra and the other a trikona, and their conjunction becomes a Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga link, as in the worked example below.
Mars's house alone decides Mangal Dosha in this app. Venus beside Mars changes nothing in that rule.
Worked example: Mars and Venus in Aquarius, 4th house
The fixed search of New Delhi birth moments finds the pair at its very first step: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST. The birth chart calculator gives Scorpio rising at 28.81 degrees, so with whole-sign houses Aquarius is the 4th house.
| Graha | Position | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Engine flags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Venus | Aquarius 2.74 | Dhanishta (3) | 4 | Friendly sign; direct; not combust |
| Mars | Aquarius 11.51 | Shatabhisha (2) | 4 | Friendly sign; not combust |
| Saturn | Scorpio 1.09 | Vishakha (4) | 1 | Neutral |
| Sun | Sagittarius 16.89 | Purva Ashadha (2) | 2 | Neutral |
- Same sign? Yes, Aquarius, so Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 15 applies as written.
- How far apart? 8.78 degrees, Venus in Dhanishta and Mars in Shatabhisha. Not a war by BPHS's one-degree test.
- Combust? Neither. Venus is 45.85 degrees from the Sun and Mars 57.62.
- Dignity? Both "Friendly sign". Aquarius is Saturn's, and Saturn is a natural friend of Venus; for Mars, neutral to Saturn, the temporary relation with Saturn (in Scorpio, the 10th from Aquarius) lifts it to friendly.
- Lords? With Scorpio rising, Mars rules the 1st and 6th, Venus the 7th and 12th.
- Yogas detected: Vasi Yoga, Kedara Yoga, Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) and Parivarthana Yoga. The Kendra-Kona entry lists Venus, Mars, the Sun and Jupiter: Mars, lord of the 1st (a kendra that is also a trikona), sits with Venus, lord of the 7th (a kendra). Here the conjunction is the link the rule counts. The Parivarthana is Mars with Saturn: Mars in Aquarius, Saturn in Scorpio.
- Mangal Dosha? A scratch run of the dosha checks flags it as mild, because Mars is in the 4th house.
So this chart shows the pair doing real work in the engine, but only through lordship: the same two grahas with a different ascendant would form no Kendra-Kona link. With Libra rising, for instance, Venus would rule the 1st and 8th and Mars the 2nd and 7th, and the conjunction would link the lagna lord with a kendra lord in a different way, house by house. The yoga list is a consequence of the ascendant as much as of the pair. Anyone checking a chart of their own should therefore read the lordships first and the conjunction second, which is the order the engine itself uses. See Mars in the 4th house, Venus in the 4th house and Venus in Aquarius.
How often the pair occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars and Venus shared a sign in 429, or 14.3 per cent. The mean separation was 9.07 degrees. The dashas run separately: the Venus Mahadasha (20 years) and the Mars Mahadasha (7 years). Related pairs: Sun-Venus, Mars-Mercury, Venus-Saturn and Mars-Ketu.
- How common is the Mars-Venus conjunction?
- In this app's engine the two shared a sign in 429 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 14.3 per cent.
- What does Saravali say about Mars with Venus?
- Ch. 15 Sl. 15: worshipped, chief among his men, a mathematician or astrologer, and fond of gambling and untruth. Sl. 23 adds that such results rise or fall with the vargas involved.
- Who wins a planetary war between Mars and Venus?
- By BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 9, Venus, whether it is north or south of Mars. The app does not compute planetary war, so this is a rule a reader would apply by hand.
- Are Mars and Venus friends or enemies?
- Naturally neutral to each other, in Bhrigu Sutras and in the engine's table. Sharing a sign makes them temporary enemies, so the engine grades either one in the other's sign as "Enemy sign".
- Can both be combust together?
- Yes. Each is tested against the Sun separately (Mars 17 degrees, Venus 10, or 8 when retrograde). In the sample both were combust in 64 of 429 Mars-Venus charts.
- Which sign is best for the pair by dignity?
- No sign exalts both. Pisces exalts Venus (deepest at 27 degrees) and Capricorn exalts Mars (deepest at 28), by BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50. In Taurus, Libra, Aries and Scorpio the guest graha is graded in an enemy's sign because its host sits beside it.
- Does Venus beside Mars cancel Mangal Dosha?
- Not in this app. The engine flags Mangal Dosha from Mars's house alone.
- Does the app suggest a remedy for this conjunction?
- No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
