The Sun and Venus in one sign: why the pair is in nearly a quarter of charts, why the texts call them enemies, Saravali's exemption for a combust Venus, the 10 and 8 degree limits this app uses, and a worked chart.

In short

The Sun and Venus share a sign in 705 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, because Venus never strays far from the Sun. They are natural enemies, and Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 6 reads the pair as skill, might and money through women. This app marks Venus combust within 10 degrees of the Sun (8 when retrograde), though Saravali says a combust Venus keeps its rays.

Venus, like Mercury, is never seen far from the Sun, and that single fact makes the Sun-Venus pair one of the commonest in any chart. On this site the pair counts as a yuti when both stand in one sign of the whole-sign chart; the engine applies no orb to that. What makes the pair worth a page of its own is a tension in the texts. The two are natural enemies, yet they are constantly together. And Saravali, unusually, says Venus does not suffer from the Sun's closeness the way other grahas do. Each graha has its own page: the Sun in Vedic astrology and Venus in Vedic astrology.

Why the Sun and Venus are so often together

Venus orbits inside the Earth's orbit, so from the Earth it only ever appears within a limited angle of the Sun. This app's engine shows the limit directly. Run over the 3,000 sampled birth moments that engine-facts uses, the widest gap it computed between the Sun and Venus was 47.24 degrees. Nothing in the sample put Venus further away.

A limit of under 48 degrees means Venus can be in the Sun's own sign or one or two signs either side of it, never more. In the sample the two shared a sign 705 times, or 23.5 per cent, almost three times the rate of the Sun's pairs with Jupiter or Saturn. When Venus is not with the Sun it is often in the sign next to it, and then it can form Vesi Yoga or Vasi Yoga, which this app detects.

The Sun and Venus as the texts describe them

Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 9 places Venus among the natural benefics with Jupiter and Mercury, and the Sun among the malefics. On natural friendship the relation runs against them both ways. Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 names Venus and Saturn as the Sun's enemies, and the Moon and the Sun as Venus's. Venus's friends are Saturn and Mercury. So the Sun and Venus are the reverse of the Sun and Jupiter: a benefic and a malefic, mutually hostile, meeting more often than almost any other pair.

Their dignities are also opposed on the zodiac. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 exalts Venus in Pisces at 27 degrees and debilitates the Sun in Libra, Venus's own sign. A Sun-Venus conjunction in Libra is therefore the Sun at its weakest in the house of its enemy. In Pisces, which the worked example uses, Venus is at its strongest and the Sun is in Jupiter's sign, a friend's.

What the classical texts say about the Sun with Venus

Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 6 reads the pair as follows in this translation: skilful in the use of weapons, mighty, able to amuse the public, and with abundant money earned through women. The sloka also includes a line on eyesight in old age, which this page does not repeat as health information. It is a curious mixture of the two natures. Weapons and might come from the Sun; entertainment, pleasure and wealth through women come from Venus. Despite the enmity between them, the line is not a quarrel. It is a competence that serves an audience.

The angle readings in Ch. 31 Sl. 18-21 are much less even. In the ascendant the text gives quarrelsomeness and want of wealth and women. In the 4th it gives service to others, sorrow and penury. In the 7th it gives insult from women and wandering. Only the 10th is generous: trade, a minister's post, skill in the shastras and arts, and wealth with conveyances. Those are the text's claims, quoted as such. As with every pair, Ch. 15 Sl. 23 says the results rise or fall with the vargas of the two grahas.

The three-planet lines in Ch. 16 matter more for this pair than for most, because Mercury, the other inner planet, is often in the same sign. Sl. 11 reads Mercury, the Sun and Venus together as insatiable, talkative, given to wandering and troubled on account of women. The worked example below is exactly that triple.

Other third grahas, and the 9th house

Saravali gives the Sun and Venus three further companions in Ch. 16. With Mars (Sl. 8) the native is of good family, fortunate, harsh and wealthy. With Jupiter (Sl. 13) the reading turns to boldness and intelligence but also want of money, with a minister's role spent on other people's work. With Saturn (Sl. 15), the Sun's other enemy, the line is the darkest of the set, beginning with fear of enemies and loss of honour. Several of these lines carry health statements, which this page leaves out; they are the text's, not medical advice. The spread shows how little the bare pair decides on its own.

Saravali Ch. 32, on the 9th house, has a separate line for Venus with the Sun there: ornaments, scents, garlands, robes and decorative things, alongside a health claim. It fits Venus's significations closely and has little of the Sun's. BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 8-10 adds a classification rather than a reading: a graha joined with a malefic is in the Vikal state, so by that rule any Venus with the Sun is Vikal, and one eclipsed by the Sun is in Kop. This app's birth chart does not compute those avasthas. For the house itself, see the 9th house.

Combustion: where the texts and the engine part ways

This app marks Venus combust when the shortest arc between it and the Sun is 10 degrees or less. If Venus is retrograde, the limit is 8 degrees. Both figures are Kannan's, cited in computeChart; Mercury and Venus are the only grahas with a separate retrograde figure in that source. Retrograde means the longitude is falling across the day around birth.

Here the classical sources say something they say of no other pair in this series. Saravali Ch. 36, on planetary rays, states that a combust planet loses all its rays, "excepting Venus and Saturn". BPHS Ch. 43 Sl. 9 makes the same exception in its longevity arithmetic: the contribution of a graha eclipsed by the Sun is halved, except for Shukra and Shani. In both texts, then, a Venus in the Sun's glare keeps more of itself than a Mercury or a Jupiter would.

What the engine does with that exception

Nothing, at present. computeChart sets the combust flag for Venus by the same arc test as every other graha, and Shad Bala sets a combust Venus's Sthana strength to zero just as it does for Mars or Jupiter. The page reports this plainly: the classical exemption exists in the corpus, and this app's strength score does not apply it.

Yogas this pair can be part of

There is no rule in this app's detector for the Sun with Venus. The pair interacts with three kinds of detected yoga. Malavya Yoga, one of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas, fires for Venus in its own or exaltation sign in an angle; the Sun's presence is irrelevant to it. Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga fires when the lords of the 9th and 10th share a house, and the Sun or Venus can be one of those lords. And Venus beside the Sun cannot be the graha that forms Vesi or Vasi for it. The yogas calculator lists what a chart actually has, and what a yoga in your chart means covers how to read that list.

Worked example: Sun and Venus in Pisces, 4th house

A fixed search through New Delhi birth moments from 1 January 1985 stops at this one first. Birth: 15 March 1985, 02:56 IST, New Delhi. The birth chart calculator gives the same chart. The ascendant is Sagittarius at 23.1 degrees, so under whole-sign houses Pisces is the 4th house, an angle.

engine-facts.mjs sun-venus-conjunction, run 2026-10-14.
  1. Same sign? Yes, Pisces. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 6 applies, and because Pisces is the 4th, so does the 4th-house line of Ch. 31. With Mercury there as well, Ch. 16 Sl. 11 applies too.
  2. How far apart? 28.03 degrees. The Sun has just entered Pisces; Venus is near its end. This is about as wide as a same-sign pair can be, and close to the 28.54-degree maximum the sample produced.
  3. Combust? No. Venus is retrograde, so its limit is 8 degrees, and it is 28 degrees away.
  4. Dignity? Venus is exalted. BPHS puts its deepest exaltation at 27 degrees of Pisces, and at 28.63 it is just past that point. The Sun is in a friendly sign. Mercury, also in Pisces, is in its sign of fall.
  5. Malavya Yoga? Yes. Exalted Venus in the 4th, an angle, is enough.
  6. Dharma-Karmadhipati Yoga? Yes, and the Sun is part of it. With Sagittarius rising, the 9th is Leo (the Sun's) and the 10th is Virgo (Mercury's). Both lords sit in Pisces, so the engine lists the yoga.
  7. The rest: Durudhura Yoga, Vesi Yoga (Mars in Aries, the 2nd from the Sun), Pasa Yoga and Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona). Venus has no part in the Vesi.

The example shows a conjunction at its widest, with the benefic exalted and untouched by the Sun. A reading that took only "Sun with Venus" from the chart would miss most of what the engine reports. For sign and house, see Venus in Pisces, the Sun in Pisces and Venus in the 4th house. It is a demonstration of rules, not a reading of a person.

Timing and neighbouring pairs

In the Vimshottari scheme the Sun's Mahadasha is 6 years and Venus's is 20, the longest of the nine. Each reads its own graha first. See the Sun Mahadasha and the Venus Mahadasha. The other inner-planet pairs follow the same pattern of high frequency: Sun-Mercury and Mercury-Venus. For contrast, see Sun-Saturn, the Sun's other enemy, and Moon-Venus.

Nothing on this page is a verdict about a reader. Saravali's lines describe a placement found in almost a quarter of the sample, and are quoted as the text's view. This app gives the pair no score or remedy. Where it acts, on combustion, it uses one stated orb, and other software with other orbs may disagree near the line.

Why is the Sun-Venus conjunction so common?
Venus never gets far from the Sun. In 3,000 sampled moments the widest gap this app's engine computed was 47.24 degrees, and the two shared a sign 705 times (23.5 per cent).
Are the Sun and Venus enemies?
Yes, both ways. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 lists Venus among the Sun's enemies and the Sun among Venus's.
When is Venus combust in this app?
Within 10 degrees of the Sun, or 8 degrees when Venus is retrograde. In the sample, 378 of the 705 same-sign moments had Venus combust.
Does combustion harm Venus less than other planets?
Saravali Ch. 36 says a combust planet loses its rays except Venus and Saturn, and BPHS Ch. 43 Sl. 9 makes the same exception. This app's Shad Bala does not apply that exception.
What does Saravali say about the Sun with Venus?
Ch. 15 Sl. 6: skilful with weapons, mighty, able to entertain the public, with abundant money earned through women. Ch. 31 Sl. 18-21 read the pair in each angle, most generously in the 10th.
Is a retrograde Venus with the Sun treated differently?
Only in the combustion test. A retrograde Venus is combust within 8 degrees instead of 10. In the sample, 106 of the 705 same-sign moments had Venus retrograde.
Does the app prescribe a remedy for a combust Venus?
No. It prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
