In short

Mercury and Venus share a sign in about a quarter of sampled charts, because both stay close to the Sun. They are mutual friends, and Saravali reads the pair as wealth, eloquence, music and refined tastes. In this app the pair has no yoga of its own; what changes from chart to chart is each graha's dignity and whether the Sun has made one or both combust.

Mercury and Venus are the two grahas that never wander far from the Sun, and that is the first thing to know about their conjunction: it is common. In this app a yuti is two grahas in one whole sign, with no orb, so the pair counts as conjunct however far apart the two are inside the sign. The degrees still matter, because combustion and the classical war rule are both measured in them. For each on its own, read Mercury in Vedic astrology and Venus in Vedic astrology.

Why Mercury and Venus meet so often

Bhrigu Sutras (Part I) puts Mercury never more than 28 degrees from the Sun. Venus is also tied to the Sun's neighbourhood. Run over 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the engine never placed the two more than 73.30 degrees apart, in any signs. Two grahas held within that range of each other, and both tied to the Sun, share a sign far more often than two independent grahas would.

In the same sample they shared a sign in 779 of the 3,000 moments, 26.0 per cent, or roughly one chart in four, against 6.8 to 14.3 per cent for the pairs on this site that involve Mars. That has a practical consequence for reading it: a placement in a quarter of all charts cannot carry the weight of a rare combination, and the useful distinctions lie in the sign, the house, the distance and the Sun's position.

Mercury and Venus as the texts describe them

BPHS Ch. 3 pairs them as the cabinet's prince and one of its ministers (Sl. 14-15). Sl. 12-13 give Mercury speech and Venus potency. In Sl. 19 Mercury is neuter and Venus female; in Sl. 20 Mercury governs earth and Venus water. The descriptions suit the pairing: Sl. 26 credits Mercury with "words with many meanings" and a fondness for jokes, Sl. 28 calls Venus charming and a poet. The minor lists carry on the contrast, with Venus ruling spring and flowering plants (Sl. 45-46, 39-40) and Mercury the autumn season and plants that bear no fruit.

They are mutual friends. Bhrigu Sutras lists Venus among Mercury's friends and Mercury among Venus's, and the engine's table of natural relationships (Kannan's) does the same. Both are benefics by BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11, and since Venus is a benefic, Mercury joined with it keeps its benefic status under that sloka's rule.

Friendship softened by sharing a sign

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 makes any two grahas in one sign temporary enemies, and Sl. 57-58 say friendship on one count and enmity on the other "turns into equality". So Mercury in Taurus or Libra beside Venus is graded in a neutral sign rather than a friend's, and Venus in Gemini beside Mercury likewise. A scratch run of the engine's dignityOf over the 3,000-moment sample gives "Neutral" for every such chart.

Pisces and Virgo: one exalted, one fallen

The two dignity schemes mirror each other exactly. By BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50, Venus is exalted in Pisces (deepest at 27 degrees) and falls in Virgo; Mercury is exalted in Virgo (deepest at 15 degrees) and falls in Pisces. A Mercury-Venus conjunction in Pisces therefore always holds an exalted Venus beside a debilitated Mercury, and in Virgo the reverse. No sign has both well placed by exaltation. The worked example below is a Pisces case.

What the classical texts say about Mercury with Venus

Saravali Ch. 15 gives each pair of the seven grahas "in one House" a sloka, and Sl. 18 is Mercury with Venus. In this translation, the native will be abundantly rich, a politician and an artisan, will study the Vedas, be good in speech, know how to sing, make fun, and like scents and flowers.

Every item in the line is favourable, and most of them map onto the two grahas' governances: speech and wit from Mercury, song, scents and flowers from Venus. As with all of Ch. 15, the sloka sets no condition of sign, house or distance, and its Sl. 23 tells the reader to increase or decrease such results according to the good or bad vargas the two occupy. A pair in Pisces, with Mercury fallen, falls under the same line as a pair in Libra; the text leaves the difference to that later adjustment.

BPHS has no two-planet chapter and no named yoga for Budh with Sukr. Its contribution here is the friendship, the dignities above, and a specific word on war, below.

What the text says, not what will happen

Saravali Sl. 18 is reported as the classical reading. The app attaches no score or reading to the conjunction itself.

Combustion: often one, sometimes both

Because both stay near the Sun, this pair is caught by combustion more than most. The engine tests each against the sidereal Sun separately, with different limits for direct and retrograde motion.

GrahaDirectRetrogradeCombust in the 779 sampled pairs
Mercury14 degrees12 degrees294
Venus10 degrees8 degrees218
Both at once--142
Orbs from COMBUST_ORB and COMBUST_ORB_RETROGRADE in computeChart; counts from a scratch walk of the same 3,000 moments.

Retrograde motion is also common here: Mercury was retrograde in 158 of the 779 pairs and Venus in 86, and a retrograde graha gets the tighter orb. A combust graha's positional strength is set to zero in Shad Bala, so in many Mercury-Venus charts at least one of the two shows a low strength figure for that reason alone, whatever its sign.

Planetary war: Venus wins by rule

BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 9 lists Mercury and Venus among the grahas that go to war when within one degree. For most pairs the northern graha wins. For any pair that includes Venus, the sloka names the winner in advance: "Sukr is the conquerer, whether he is in North, or South". Ch. 27 Sl. 20 then moves the Shad Bala difference to Venus. The engine has no war rule, so the app does not apply this. In the sample, 54 of the 779 pairs were within a degree; a reader applying BPHS by hand would count Mercury the loser in each.

Yogas this pair can be part of

  • No yoga in the engine is defined by Mercury with Venus. The yogas calculator lists what fires in a chart.
  • Bhadra (Mercury in Gemini or Virgo in a kendra) and Malavya (Venus in Taurus, Libra or Pisces in a kendra) can each fire with the other graha beside it. They cannot both fire from one sign, since no sign is own or exaltation for both.
  • Solar yogas. When the pair stands in the 2nd or 12th sign from the Sun, both count towards Vesi, Vasi or Ubhayachari, which is frequent for two grahas that stay so close to the Sun.
  • Gaj Kesari. Both are benefics in the engine's list, so either one beside Jupiter, or aspecting it, can supply that rule's benefic support. That is a three-graha matter, not a property of this pair.

Worked example: Mercury and Venus in Pisces, 5th house

The fixed search through New Delhi birth moments first finds the pair on 6 March 1985 at 00:19 IST. Mars is in the same sign. The birth chart calculator gives Scorpio rising at 9.38 degrees, so with whole-sign houses Pisces is the 5th house.

  1. Same sign? Yes, Pisces. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 18 applies as written.
  2. How far apart? 23.28 degrees: Mercury at the start of the sign, Venus near the end. No war.
  3. Dignities? The Pisces pattern exactly. Venus is exalted, and at 27.43 it is within half a degree of the deepest exaltation point BPHS gives. Mercury is debilitated.
  4. Combust? Mercury yes, 12.65 degrees from the Sun (limit 14). Venus no, 35.93 degrees away. So the fallen graha is also the combust one.
  5. Lords? With Scorpio rising, Mercury rules the 8th and 11th, Venus the 7th and 12th.
  6. Malavya? No. Venus is exalted, but the 5th is not a kendra.
  7. Yogas detected: Ubhayachari Yoga, Pasa Yoga, Argala Raj Yoga and Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona). Ubhayachari lists Mercury and Venus, because Pisces is the 2nd sign from the Sun. The Kendra-Kona entry lists Venus, Mars, the Sun and the Moon; there Venus counts as lord of the 7th, linked with Mars as lagna lord. Mercury is not in it.

This chart is the clearest possible case of why the sign matters more than the conjunction: the same two friendly benefics, one at its best and one at its worst, and the weaker one combust as well. See Venus in the 5th house, Mercury in the 5th house, Venus in Pisces and Mercury in Pisces. The Mars side of the same chart is on the Mars-Mercury page.

Reading the pair in a real chart

With a pair this common, the order of questions matters more than any one answer. Start with the sign, because Pisces and Virgo decide the dignities outright, Taurus, Libra and Gemini bring the guest down to neutral, and every other sign depends on where its lord sits. Then look at the Sun: in a large share of these charts one of the two is combust, and that zeroes its positional strength regardless of dignity. Then the distance between them, which only matters for the war rule the app does not compute. Then the house and the lordships, which decide whether the pair takes part in any yoga at all. Saravali's line applies at every step, unchanged, which is exactly why its own Sl. 23 asks for adjustment.

How often the pair occurs, and timing

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mercury and Venus shared a sign in 779, or 26.0 per cent. The mean separation inside those was 10.26 degrees, with 232 within 5 degrees and 54 within 1. The dashas run separately: the Venus Mahadasha lasts 20 years, the longest in the Vimshottari scheme, and the Mercury Mahadasha 17. Related pairs: Sun-Mercury, Sun-Venus, Mars-Venus and Mercury-Jupiter.

How common is the Mercury-Venus conjunction?
In this app's engine the two shared a sign in 779 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 26.0 per cent, about one chart in four.
What does Saravali say about Mercury with Venus?
Ch. 15 Sl. 18: abundantly rich, a politician and artisan, a student of the Vedas, good in speech, able to sing and make fun, and fond of scents and flowers.
Are Mercury and Venus friends?
Yes, mutually, in Bhrigu Sutras and in the engine's table. When one is in the other's sign beside it, the temporary enmity of sharing a sign brings the engine's label down to Neutral.
What happens when the pair is in Pisces or Virgo?
One is exalted and the other debilitated. In Pisces Venus is exalted and Mercury fallen; in Virgo Mercury is exalted and Venus fallen (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50).
Can both be combust at once?
Yes. Each is tested against the Sun separately (Mercury 14 degrees, Venus 10, tighter when retrograde). In the sample both were combust in 142 of the 779 pairs.
Can the pair form Bhadra and Malavya together?
Not from one sign. Bhadra needs Mercury in Gemini or Virgo, Malavya needs Venus in Taurus, Libra or Pisces, each in a kendra, and no sign satisfies both. Either one can still fire with the other graha sitting beside it.
Who wins a planetary war between Mercury and Venus?
Venus, by BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 9, whatever their north-south positions. The app does not compute planetary war.
Does the app suggest a remedy for this conjunction?
No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
