Conjunctions

The Sun and Saturn in one sign: mirror-image dignities, mutual enmity, what Saravali Ch. 15 and Ch. 31 say, Saturn's classical exemption from combustion, the 15-degree limit this app uses, and a worked chart.

In short

The Sun and Saturn are mutual enemies whose exaltation and debilitation signs are mirror images. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 7 reads the pair as dutiful and pure but with losses in family. They share a sign in 273 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060; this app marks Saturn combust within 15 degrees of the Sun.

BPHS seats the grahas in a royal court. Ch. 3 Sl. 14-15 makes the Sun and the Moon royal and Saturn a servant. A Sun-Saturn conjunction puts the king and the servant in the same room, and the texts do not expect the meeting to be easy. On this site a conjunction, or yuti, is two grahas in the same sign of a whole-sign chart, with no orb applied. This page follows the pair through the classical readings, through a combustion rule on which the texts and this app's strength score part company, and through a chart in which the pair helps form a yoga. For each graha alone, see the Sun in Vedic astrology and Saturn in Vedic astrology.

The Sun and Saturn as the texts describe them

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 gives each graha a governance. The Sun is the soul; Saturn denotes grief. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 7 repeats the cabinet: the Sun and Moon are kings, Saturn the servant, and the native takes on the qualities of the strongest graha. On natural friendship, Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 names Saturn among the Sun's enemies and the Sun first among Saturn's. The hostility is mutual, which is not true of every pair this page series covers. Both are natural malefics in Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 9.

The most striking fact about the two is how their dignities mirror each other. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 exalts the Sun in Aries, deepest at 10 degrees, and Saturn in Libra, deepest at 20. Each graha is debilitated in the seventh sign from its exaltation. So Aries, the Sun's exaltation, is Saturn's fall, and Libra, Saturn's exaltation, is the Sun's fall. A Sun-Saturn conjunction in either of those two signs has one graha at its best and the other at its worst, at the same time. In Leo the Sun is at home and Saturn in an enemy's sign; in Capricorn or Aquarius the reverse holds.

What the classical texts say about the Sun with Saturn

Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 7 reads the pair, in this translation, as follows: a metallurgist, virtuous, mindful of his own duties, with the qualities suited to his lineage, and pure, but not so upright. The same line says he will lose his wife and son. It is a reading of discipline and duty set beside loss. Compare the Sun-Mars line a few slokas earlier, which is all heat and force; this one is restraint, with a cost attached. Sl. 23 adds its usual rider: results rise or fall with the vargas of the two grahas.

The angle chapter is harsher. Saravali Ch. 31 Sl. 22-25 reads the Sun and Saturn unfavourably in all four angles. The ascendant line speaks of blameworthy conduct; the 4th of poverty and humiliation among relatives; the 7th of inactivity and want. The 10th is the least severe: service in a low post away from home, wealth from rulers at times, then lost again. Those are the text's claims. They are reported here so a reader knows what the source says, and they are not this app's judgement of anyone.

Saravali Ch. 16 gives four three-planet lines that contain the pair. With Mars (Sl. 9) and with Mercury (Sl. 12) the readings are among the bleakest in the chapter. With Venus (Sl. 15) the line is also hard. With Jupiter (Sl. 14) it softens: worshipped, fearless, dear to the ruler, with a good wife, children and friends, though at odds with his own people. Of the Sun's two enemies, Venus and Saturn, the texts treat Saturn's company more gravely in every chapter consulted here.

Saravali Ch. 32, on the 9th house, has a line for Saturn with the Sun there as well. It gives wealth and a fondness for quarrels, and adds claims about eyesight and lifespan that this page does not repeat. Saravali opens that chapter by calling the 9th the house of fortune, to be examined before any other, and BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 10 lists fortune and religion among its indications. The pair's line there is short and mixed, much like Ch. 15 Sl. 7: material gain on one side, friction on the other. See the 9th house for the house in full.

Not a planetary war

BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 9 defines graha yuddha only among Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn within a degree of each other. The Sun is not one of them, so however close Saturn comes to it, the pair is not a planetary war in BPHS's sense. This app computes no planetary war in the chart.

Combustion: Saturn's classical exemption

This app marks Saturn combust when the shortest arc between it and the Sun is 15 degrees or less. The figure is Kannan's, cited in computeChart, and the source gives Saturn no retrograde variant. It would rarely matter: in the probe below, not one Saturn in the Sun's sign was retrograde.

So three conjunctions in four have Saturn combust, and one combust Saturn in four is in a neighbouring sign. The classical sources, however, are lenient with Saturn in exactly this state. Saravali Ch. 36, on planetary rays, says a combust planet loses all its rays "excepting Venus and Saturn". BPHS Ch. 43 Sl. 9 makes the same exception when it halves the longevity share of grahas eclipsed by the Sun. By both texts, a Saturn in the Sun's glare keeps its strength better than most.

This app's Shad Bala does not carry that exception. When the combust flag is set, it sets Saturn's Sthana strength to zero, as it does for any other graha. That is a known difference between the corpus and the engine, stated here so a reader comparing the two is not surprised. BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 8-10 offers a third angle: by its avastha list a graha with a malefic is Vikal and one eclipsed by the Sun is in Kop. The birth chart does not compute those states.

Yogas this pair can be part of

The engine has no rule for the Sun with Saturn. The pair can still sit inside detected yogas through lordship. Raja Yoga (5th and 9th lords) fires when those two lords share a house; for a Libra ascendant Saturn rules the 5th, and the worked example shows the result. Sasa Yoga needs Saturn in its own or exaltation sign in an angle, and the Sun's presence does not affect it. And a Saturn beside the Sun cannot form Vesi or Vasi, which need it one sign away. Every detected yoga for a chart is in the yogas calculator.

Worked example: Sun and Saturn in Scorpio, 2nd house

The first chart a fixed search through New Delhi birth moments finds with the two in one sign is this one. Birth: 25 November 1985, 04:12 IST, New Delhi. Enter it in the birth chart calculator to check. The ascendant is Libra at 3.98 degrees, so under whole-sign houses Scorpio is the 2nd house.

  1. Same sign? Yes. Scorpio holds the Sun, Saturn and Mercury, all in the 2nd house. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 7 applies, and with Mercury present so does Ch. 16 Sl. 12. The 2nd is not an angle, so Ch. 31 does not apply.
  2. How far apart? 1.68 degrees, and both are in the same nakshatra pada, Anuradha 2.
  3. Combust? Saturn, yes, by a wide margin: 1.68 against a 15-degree limit. Its Sthana strength in Shad Bala is set to zero, although by Saravali Ch. 36 a combust Saturn keeps its rays. Mercury is combust too; it is retrograde, so its limit is 12 degrees, and it is about 9 degrees from the Sun.
  4. Raja Yoga? Yes. With Libra rising, Saturn rules Aquarius, the 5th, and Mercury rules Gemini, the 9th. Both are in Scorpio, so the engine lists Raja Yoga. Saturn takes part through lordship, not through being with the Sun.
  5. Vasi Yoga? Yes, from Venus in Libra, the 12th sign from the Sun. Saturn, beside the Sun, does not form it.
  6. The rest: Pasa, Maala, Mudrika, Malavya (Venus in its own sign in the 1st), Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) and Parivarthana (Mars in Virgo and Mercury in Scorpio, each in the other's sign).

The chart shows the pair at its tightest, with Saturn deep in the Sun's glare and still contributing to a yoga through its lordship. For sign and house pages, see Saturn in Scorpio, the Sun in Scorpio and Saturn in the 2nd house. The steps describe rules, not anyone's life.

How often the pair occurs

In 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 the Sun and Saturn shared a sign 273 times, or 9.1 per cent, a little more than one in twelve. In 148 of those they were within 10 degrees; the widest same-sign gap was 28.01 degrees. The dashas are separate: 6 years for the Sun and 19 for Saturn in the Vimshottari scheme. See the Sun Mahadasha and the Saturn Mahadasha. Saturn's transit over the Moon is a different subject, covered under Sade Sati. Neighbouring pairs: Sun-Mars, Sun-Venus and Mercury-Saturn.

What this page does not claim

The classical lines for this pair are among the sternest in Saravali. They are quoted, briefly, as the text's claims about a placement found in about one chart in eleven, and the page does not endorse them as predictions. This app attaches no penalty, yoga or remedy to the conjunction. It acts only on combustion, by a stated 15-degree rule, and it says where that rule departs from the classical exemption.

Are the Sun and Saturn enemies?
Yes, mutually. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 lists Saturn among the Sun's enemies and the Sun among Saturn's.
Why are the Sun and Saturn called opposites?
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 exalts the Sun in Aries and Saturn in Libra, and each is debilitated in the other's exaltation sign. In Aries or Libra one is strongest while the other is weakest.
When is Saturn combust in this app?
Within 15 degrees of the Sun by longitude. In the sample, 204 of the 273 same-sign moments had Saturn combust, and 68 combust moments were in a neighbouring sign.
Does combustion weaken Saturn?
Saravali Ch. 36 and BPHS Ch. 43 Sl. 9 both exempt Saturn (and Venus) from the usual loss. This app's Shad Bala does not apply the exemption and zeroes a combust Saturn's Sthana strength.
What does Saravali say about the Sun with Saturn?
Ch. 15 Sl. 7: a metallurgist, virtuous, dutiful, pure but not so upright, with losses in wife and son. Ch. 31 Sl. 22-25 read the pair harshly in all four angles.
Is a Sun-Saturn conjunction a planetary war?
No. BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 9 excludes the Sun from planetary war, and this app does not compute one.
Is a Sun-Saturn conjunction the same as Sade Sati?
No. The conjunction is a fixed fact of the birth chart. Sade Sati is a period of years when transiting Saturn passes the signs around the natal Moon, and this app computes it separately.
Does the app suggest remedies for this pair?
No. It prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
