In short

Venus and Saturn share a sign in 259 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.6 per cent). They are natural friends of each other in Saravali and in this app's table, and Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 22 reads the pair as craft and travel: a worker in wood, a painter or sculptor, a boxer, a wanderer and an owner of animals.

Two grahas in one sign make a conjunction, yuti, on this site; the chart uses whole-sign houses, so the sign is the house, and no orb is applied. Venus and Saturn are the classical texts' clearest case of two grahas that like each other: a benefic and a malefic, each listed among the other's friends. This page covers that friendship, the Saravali reading, the combustion rule that treats the two alike, and one chart in which they are barely more than a degree apart. For the grahas alone, see Venus in Vedic astrology and Saturn in Vedic astrology.

Venus and Saturn as the texts describe them

On paper the two have little in common. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 gives Shukr potency and Shani grief. Sl. 19 makes Shukr female and Shani neuter. In the strength rules of Sl. 35-38, Shani is the only graha strong in the West and is strong at night, while Shukr is strong in the North and only by day. One is a natural benefic and the other, by Sl. 11, a malefic.

And yet the friendship tables join them. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 says "Saturn and Mercury are friends of Venus" and "Mercury and Venus are Saturn's friends". The table in this app's engine, which follows BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 (naisargika maitri), says the same. Saturn has two natural friends, Mercury and Venus, and only Venus returns the friendship; Mercury counts Saturn neutral. Venus is Saturn's one mutual friend among the seven grahas. In practice that means Venus in Capricorn or Aquarius and Saturn in Taurus or Libra get a "Friendly sign" label in the app, and that in compound friendship, which adds the temporary relationship, two friends in one sign start from friendly rather than neutral.

Two grahas the texts contrast on almost every line, and still list as friends.

The table makes the paradox concrete. There is hardly a category in BPHS Ch. 3 where the two agree, yet the friendship rule of Sl. 55, which works from moolatrikona signs rather than from natures, puts each among the other's friends. The rule is arithmetic, not temperament, and here the arithmetic overrides the contrast.

What the classical texts say about Venus with Saturn

Saravali Ch. 15, the Vriddha Yavanas' two-planet readings, ends its list with this pair at Sl. 22. In this translation the native will be expert in breaking wood, be a barber, a painter or a sculptor, a boxer, be intent on wandering, and own quadrupeds.

It is the most practical sloka in the chapter. Nearly every item is a trade done with the hands: woodwork, barbering, painting, sculpture, fighting, keeping animals. Venus contributes the arts and appearance, Saturn the labour and the materials. There is no wealth line and no marriage line, unlike the readings for Venus with Mercury or with Jupiter just before it. The "intent on wandering" echoes the Mercury-Saturn line's "intent on moving", the one phrase the chapter repeats for two of Saturn's pairs.

Sl. 23 follows immediately and closes the chapter: every result may grow or shrink with the good or bad vargas the planets hold. A reader is meant to take Sl. 22 as a starting description, then adjust it by the divisional charts. BPHS gives the pair no reading and no named yoga.

When more grahas join

Saravali goes on to larger groups, and the pair's reading changes with company. Ch. 17 Sl. 19 covers the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Saturn together, which is exactly the grouping in the worked example below. The line is mostly favourable: fortunate, learned, soft-spoken, happy, energetic, wealthy, bold and helpful to friends, with one jarring item, scurrilous speech. The three-planet lines for Venus and Saturn with the Sun and with Mercury in Ch. 16 are harsher and include health claims, and this page does not repeat them.

Venus and Saturn also appear together in a yoga the engine does detect, but not as a conjunction. Saravali Ch. 13 Sl. 29 describes Durudhura Yoga formed by Venus and Saturn on either side of the Moon, one in the 2nd sign from it and one in the 12th: mature conduct, skill, favour and wealth. That is the two flanking the Moon, apart, rather than sharing a sign.

BPHS: hunger and the war Venus always wins

BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 places a graha "yuti with Shani" in Kshudhit avastha, so Venus beside Saturn is Kshudhit by the text; this app does not compute avasthas. BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 9 gives a planetary war when two of Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are within a degree, and says Shukr is always the conqueror. In 15 of the 259 sampled conjunctions the two were that close. The engine does not compute the war.

Combustion: the exemption both share

Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9, on the rays of the planets, says a combust planet loses all its rays, "excepting Venus and Saturn". The two exceptions are this pair. By that sloka, neither member of a Venus-Saturn conjunction loses its rays to the Sun. The engine does not follow the exemption: it marks combustion for Venus within 10 degrees of the Sun (8 when retrograde) and for Saturn within 15, and sets either's position strength to zero in Shad Bala when it applies. In the 259 conjunctions Venus was combust 42 times and Saturn 55.

The sample shows one more effect of Venus's closeness to the Sun. Venus was retrograde in 13 of the conjunctions; Saturn was retrograde in none. Saturn turns retrograde only when roughly opposite the Sun, and Venus never gets that far from it, so the two cannot meet while Saturn is retrograde.

Yogas this pair can be part of

There is no Venus-Saturn yoga in the engine. The pair takes part in Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) when one rules an angle and the other a trine from the ascendant. Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Saturn Capricorn and Aquarius. With Taurus rising Saturn rules the 9th and 10th, a trine and an angle at once, and the app's yoga karaka table, taken from BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 19-44, names Saturn the yoga karaka for that ascendant and Venus, the lagna lord, among its auspicious grahas. A Venus-Saturn conjunction in a Taurus-rising chart therefore joins the lagna lord to the yoga karaka. For other ascendants the conjunction may join only two angle lords, which does not meet the Kendra-Kona rule, as the worked example shows. Both grahas also count in the Sun- and Moon-flanking yogas. Check any chart in the yogas calculator.

Worked example: Venus and Saturn in Scorpio, 1st house

The fixed New Delhi search finds this chart first. Birth: 4 December 1985, 06:49 IST, New Delhi. The ascendant is Scorpio at 15.23 degrees, so Scorpio is the 1st house, and four grahas stand in it. Enter the details in the birth chart calculator to check.

  1. Same sign? Yes, Scorpio. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 22 applies to the pair, and with the Sun and Mercury also present, Ch. 17 Sl. 19 applies to the four.
  2. How far apart? 1.35 degrees, all three of Mercury, Venus and Saturn in the same pada of Anuradha. That is just outside the one degree of BPHS Ch. 79, so the text's planetary war is not triggered.
  3. Combust? The Sun is at 18.18. Saturn is 9.83 degrees from it, inside its 15-degree orb, and the engine marks it combust. Venus is 11.18 degrees away, just outside its 10, and is not combust. Saravali would exempt both anyway.
  4. Lordships? With Scorpio rising, Venus rules the 7th and 12th, Saturn the 3rd and 4th. Both are angle lords and neither rules a trine, so Kendra-Kona does not fire for them, and the engine lists it for no pair here.
  5. Yogas? Sunapha (Mars in the 2nd from the Moon), Kedara (seven grahas in four signs) and Parivarthana (Mars and Mercury in each other's signs). None is a Venus-Saturn rule.

Two smaller details round out the chart. Venus, Saturn and Mercury all sit in Anuradha, whose Vimshottari lord, counting the order of BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 12-14 from Krittika, is Saturn. So the friends share a sign ruled by Mars and a nakshatra ruled by Saturn. And the Sun, ten degrees on in Jyeshtha, is what separates the two in the engine's eyes: close enough to make Saturn combust, not close enough to reach Venus.

For the separate pieces, see Venus in Scorpio, Saturn in Scorpio, Venus in the 1st house and Saturn in the 1st house. The example shows which rules fire; it describes no one.

How often the pair occurs

Venus and Saturn shared a sign in 259 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.6 per cent. Venus, staying near the Sun, passes through Saturn's sign about once a year, and Saturn holds a sign for over two years, so most years contain a stretch with the pair. The widest gap inside a sign was 27.61 degrees. In Vimshottari the two run long periods: Venus 20 years, Saturn 19 (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). See the Venus Mahadasha and the Saturn Mahadasha. Related pairs: Mercury-Saturn, Jupiter-Venus, Sun-Saturn and Venus-Rahu.

What this page does not claim

Saravali's list of trades is a classical description of the pair, reported as the text gives it, not a career forecast. The avasthas, planetary war and the combustion exemption are the texts' rules; where the engine differs, as on combustion, the page says so. The app attaches no score or remedy to the conjunction. A friendship between two grahas is likewise a rule of the tables, used to label dignities; it is not a statement about anyone's relationships, and the engine uses it only to label signs and compound friendship.

How common is the Venus-Saturn conjunction?
In this app's engine, 259 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 8.6 per cent.
Are Venus and Saturn friends?
Yes, mutually. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 and the engine's natural table each list the other as a friend.
What does Saravali say about Venus with Saturn?
Ch. 15 Sl. 22: expert in breaking wood, a barber, painter or sculptor, a boxer, intent on wandering and an owner of quadrupeds. Sl. 23 scales the reading by vargas.
Is the pair special for Taurus or Libra rising?
For Taurus rising, the app's yoga karaka table (from BPHS Ch. 34) names Saturn the yoga karaka and Venus, the lagna lord, an auspicious graha, so the conjunction joins the two. For Libra rising the same table names the Moon and Mercury as yoga karakas, not Saturn, though Saturn there rules the 4th and 5th and its conjunction with Venus, lord of the 1st, meets the Kendra-Kona rule.
Do Venus and Saturn lose strength when combust?
Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 says they are the two exceptions that keep their rays. This app does not apply the exemption; it zeroes position strength for either when combust.
Can Saturn be retrograde when Venus joins it?
Not in the engine's sample: Saturn was direct in all 259 conjunctions, because it turns retrograde only far from the Sun, where Venus never goes.
Who wins a planetary war between Venus and Saturn?
BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 9 says Venus always wins. The war needs the two within one degree; this app does not compute it.
Does the app suggest a remedy for this conjunction?
No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
