In short
Venus in Scorpio sits in the sign of Mars, a natural neutral of Venus, so its dignity is Neutral by default and can read Friendly sign or Enemy sign in a real chart. Saravali Ch. 28 reads it as quarrels, debts and enemies, then changes the verdict according to which planet aspects it. The house Scorpio occupies from your Lagna decides what Venus rules and where it acts.
Scorpio belongs to Mars, which this engine counts as a natural neutral of Venus, so with nothing else known the label is Neutral; in a real chart it can read Friendly sign or Enemy sign. That label is only the starting point. What the placement does in a chart is a separate question, answered by the house Scorpio occupies from your Lagna, the houses Venus rules from there, and the planets that aspect it. This page sets out each of those, with the classical statement for this exact combination.
It covers the combination only. For Venus as a graha - its significations, strength and dashas - start with Venus in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its lord, its nakshatras and what a rising Scorpio means - see Scorpio, Vrishchika Rashi. What follows is a map of rules and of what the texts say, not a forecast about anyone.
Venus in Scorpio: dignity, and how this app decides it
Scorpio is neither Venus's own sign nor its sign of exaltation (Pisces) or debilitation (Virgo). So the label comes from the relationship between Venus and the sign's lord, Mars. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 derives the natural relationship; this engine's table of natural relationships makes Mars a natural neutral of Venus, which gives the sign-only label Neutral.
| Degrees of Scorpio | Label in this engine (no chart) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Neutral | One eighth |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relationship between the planet and the sign's lord. For Venus in Scorpio none of the first four tests applies, so the label always comes from the relationship with Mars, and it is the same at every degree of the sign.
In a real chart the engine uses the fivefold relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58, combining the natural relation with the temporary relation of Sl. 56: two grahas are temporary friends when one sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the other, and temporary enemies otherwise. Mars is a natural neutral of Venus. If Mars sits in one of those six signs counted from Scorpio, the compound is Friend and the label reads Friendly sign; if it sits anywhere else, the compound is Enemy and the label reads Enemy sign. So Venus in Scorpio can show as Friendly sign or Enemy sign depending on where Mars is. The full rule is under Panchadha Maitri.
The scoring is the engine's, not the text's. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 grades the results - exaltation full, Moolatrikona three quarters, own sign half, a friend's sign a quarter, a neutral's an eighth, an enemy's sign or debilitation nil. The engine gives Exalted and Moolatrikona a sthana strength of 10, Own sign 7.5, Friendly sign 6.25, Neutral 5, and Enemy sign and Debilitated 0. The order is the same; the gaps between the steps are not. The general idea is under dignity. Neighbouring placements show the contrast: Venus in Libra and Venus in Sagittarius, the exaltation case Venus in Pisces, and the debilitation case Venus in Virgo.
The nakshatras Venus moves through in Scorpio
Scorpio holds pada 4 of Vishakha, all four padas of Anuradha and all four padas of Jyeshtha. Each pada is 3 degrees 20 minutes, so the spans below follow from the pada count. The dignity label is the same in all of them; the nakshatra adds its own lord and pada to the reading, which the nakshatra pages take up: Vishakha, Anuradha and Jyeshtha.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Scorpio | Span within Scorpio | Venus's label there (no chart) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vishakha | 4 | 0 degrees to 3 degrees 20 minutes | Neutral |
| Anuradha | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 3 degrees 20 minutes to 16 degrees 40 minutes | Neutral |
| Jyeshtha | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 16 degrees 40 minutes to 30 degrees | Neutral |
What the classical texts say about Venus in Scorpio
Saravali Ch. 28 Sl. 15-16
The Scorpio line is among the harshest in the chapter: jealousy, malice, irreligion, argument and craft, estrangement from brothers, misfortune, trouble from enemies, heavy debts and penury, pride, and a venereal illness (the text's statement, not medical advice). It is reported here briefly, as the text's claim.
The lines on either side make the contrast clear. For Libra (Sl. 13-14) the chapter gives earned wealth, duty and fame; for Sagittarius (Sl. 17-18) it gives virtue, wealth and respect. For Scorpio the short form is quarrels, debts and enemies. See Venus in Libra and Venus in Sagittarius for those lines in full.
Saravali Ch. 28 Sl. 25-30: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads Venus in Aries or Scorpio under the aspect of each other planet. These lines often change the verdict more than the sign line does, because they are where the chapter turns praise into censure or the reverse. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Sun: misery and loss of wealth and happiness on account of women, yet kingship and learning.
- Aspected by the Moon: confinement, great fickleness, strong passions, an unhappy marriage and no children.
- Aspected by Mars: a want of wealth, honour and happiness, and work in others' service.
- Aspected by Mercury: foolishness and profligacy, estrangement from relatives, immodesty, theft and cruelty.
- Aspected by Jupiter: beautiful eyes, a charitable spouse, a handsome tall body and many sons.
- Aspected by Saturn: uncleanliness, laziness, wandering, service to others and theft.
The Bhrigu Sutras commentary notes that Venus is never more than 48 degrees from the Sun and Mercury never more than 28. A planet seven signs away is at least 150 degrees off, so neither the Sun nor Mercury can ever stand in the 7th sign from Venus, and their lines describe a configuration the sky does not produce. The pattern is the useful part: the same sign reads well or badly depending on what aspects it, so the sign line is only half of Saravali's verdict. Which of these lines applies to a given chart is a matter of counting houses, as the worked example below shows.
Saravali Ch. 45 on the dignity itself
Saravali Ch. 45, "Effects of Planetary Dignities", adds a short line for each class of dignity, independent of the sign. For Venus in a friend's sign (Sl. 12-14) it gives fond of friends, rich and adventurous and in an enemy's sign (Sl. 19-21) it gives service to others, wrong means and great misery. The chapter has no line for a neutral's sign, so where the engine reads Neutral, Saravali Ch. 45 is silent. These are the text's statements; this app reports them and does not turn them into predictions.
BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras
BPHS does not give a sign-by-sign line for Venus. Its Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 rule for Malavya Yoga needs Venus in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra, so Venus in Scorpio never forms it, whatever the Lagna. The Venus section of the Bhrigu Sutras commentary agrees on the signs (own Taurus and Libra, exaltation Pisces at 27 degrees, debilitation Virgo at 27 degrees) and on the friends (Mercury, Saturn), enemies (Sun, Moon) and neutrals (Mars, Jupiter). It differs on one number: it gives the first 20 degrees of Libra as Moolatrikona, where BPHS gives the first half, 15 degrees. This engine follows BPHS. The Bhrigu Sutras proper is arranged by house rather than by sign, so it has no line for Venus in Scorpio as such.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: Venus's exaltation is Pisces and its debilitation Virgo, deepest at 27 degrees (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50, Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35-36, the Bhrigu Sutras commentary).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali weighs it by the aspecting planet (Ch. 28 Sl. 25-30); BPHS by rules such as the Kendra test for Malavya Yoga.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for Venus in Scorpio as such. Of the texts used here, Saravali is the only one that writes one.
- Different numbers: the Moolatrikona span in Libra is 15 degrees in BPHS and 20 degrees in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary. This engine uses BPHS.
- Different scales: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 puts Moolatrikona a step below exaltation; this engine gives both the same sthana strength.
What Venus rules from each Lagna, with Venus in Scorpio
Venus rules Taurus and Libra. With whole-sign houses the table below is mechanical: the second column is where Scorpio falls, the third and fourth are the houses Venus rules. The planned house pages, such as Venus in the 1st house and Venus in the 10th house, take each house further.
| Lagna | House of Venus (Scorpio) | Venus rules | Venus also rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 8th | 2nd (Taurus) | 7th (Libra) |
| Taurus | 7th | 1st (Taurus) | 6th (Libra) |
| Gemini | 6th | 12th (Taurus) | 5th (Libra) |
| Cancer | 5th | 11th (Taurus) | 4th (Libra) |
| Leo | 4th | 10th (Taurus) | 3rd (Libra) |
| Virgo | 3rd | 9th (Taurus) | 2nd (Libra) |
| Libra | 2nd | 8th (Taurus) | 1st (Libra) |
| Scorpio | 1st | 7th (Taurus) | 12th (Libra) |
| Sagittarius | 12th | 6th (Taurus) | 11th (Libra) |
| Capricorn | 11th | 5th (Taurus) | 10th (Libra) |
| Aquarius | 10th | 4th (Taurus) | 9th (Libra) |
| Pisces | 9th | 3rd (Taurus) | 8th (Libra) |
Two groups of rows are worth singling out. For Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces rising, Scorpio is a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th). For Aries, Gemini and Sagittarius rising, it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th), and the engine's planet table names that house type alongside the dignity. Neither fact changes the dignity label; both change how the planet is read.
Worked example: 4 December 1985, 06:49 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine and found by a deterministic search. Scorpio rises at 15.23 degrees. Venus is at 7 degrees of Scorpio, in Anuradha pada 2, in the 1st house, not retrograde and not combust. The engine labels it Friendly sign. Anyone can re-enter the date, time and place in the Birth Chart calculator and see the same chart.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Scorpio 18.18 | Jyeshtha (1) | 1 | Friendly sign |
| Moon | Leo 2.02 | Magha (1) | 10 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Virgo 29.71 | Chitra (2) | 11 | Neutral |
| Mercury | Scorpio 6.91, retrograde, combust | Anuradha (2) | 1 | Friendly sign |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 19.24 | Shravana (3) | 3 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Scorpio 7 | Anuradha (2) | 1 | Friendly sign |
| Saturn | Scorpio 8.35, combust | Anuradha (2) | 1 | Neutral |
| Rahu | Aries 13.65, retrograde | Bharani (1) | 6 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 13.65, retrograde | Swati (3) | 12 | Neutral |
Why Friendly sign. Mars, the lord of Scorpio, is in Virgo, the 11th sign counted from Scorpio. That makes it a temporary friend (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56). Natural neutral plus temporary friend gives Friend under Sl. 57-58, which the engine shows as Friendly sign. This differs from the sign-only label, Neutral, which is exactly the chart-to-chart movement described above.
Lordship. For a Scorpio Lagna, Taurus is the 7th house and Libra the 12th, so Venus rules the 7th and the 12th and sits in the 1st. The 1st is a trikona from the Lagna.
Aspects. Saravali's aspect lines need a planet whose drishti reaches Scorpio. Using the rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - none of the other six grahas aspects the 1st house here. So none of the Sl. 25-30 lines applies to this chart, and only the bare sign line of Sl. 15-16 does. That is a common outcome, and it is why the aspects are counted before the aspect lines are quoted.
Company. Sun (18.18 degrees), Mercury (6.91 degrees) and Saturn (8.35 degrees) share Scorpio with Venus. Saravali's Ch. 28 sign and aspect lines cover aspects, not planets in the same sign, so this page adds no reading of its own for the conjunction.
The rest of the chart. Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn. That is a reminder that one placement describes one part of a chart, and the reading of Venus in Scorpio is never the reading of the whole.
How often Venus is in Scorpio
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Venus was in Scorpio in 203 of them, 6.8 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary notes that Venus is never more than 48 degrees from the Sun, so Venus moves through the signs roughly alongside the Sun over the years, with retrograde loops that can hold it in one sign for longer. The share therefore moves with which parts of the year the sample happens to cover.
Checking Venus in Scorpio in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Venus is in Scorpio and note the label the planet table gives it.
- Note the house Scorpio occupies and the houses Taurus and Libra occupy: those are where Venus sits and what it rules.
- Find Mars and count from Scorpio to its sign. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th makes it a temporary friend; anything else a temporary enemy. That decides the label.
- List the planets that aspect Scorpio: anything in the 7th sign from it, Mars when the sign is 4th or 8th from Mars, Jupiter when it is 5th or 9th from Jupiter, Saturn when it is 3rd or 10th from Saturn. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 28 Sl. 25-30 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, the ninth-part chart with the Navamsa calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Venus Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Venus exalted or debilitated in Scorpio?
- Neither. Venus is exalted in Pisces and debilitated in Virgo. In Scorpio it is in the sign of Mars, labelled by relationship. See Venus in Pisces.
- Does the degree of Venus in Scorpio matter?
- Not for the label, which is the same at every degree of Scorpio. The degree still sets the nakshatra and pada, and how close Venus is to the Sun for combustion.
- Can another planet change the dignity of Venus in Scorpio?
- Yes, through Mars. Its position decides the temporary relationship, and the fivefold result can read Friendly sign or Enemy sign. Aspects change the Saravali reading but not the label.
- Does Venus in Scorpio give Malavya Yoga?
- No. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 needs Venus in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra, and Scorpio is neither for Venus.
- Which nakshatras can Venus occupy in Scorpio?
- Vishakha (pada 4), Anuradha (padas 1, 2, 3, 4) and Jyeshtha (padas 1, 2, 3, 4), per this engine's nakshatra table.
- How common is Venus in Scorpio?
- In this app's sample it was in Scorpio in 203 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 6.8 per cent. That describes the sky in the sample, not a share of people.
