Conjunctions

Venus with Rahu in one sign: why Saravali is silent, how BPHS ties Rahu's exaltation to Venus's sign Taurus, the dasha lines the conjunction can satisfy, how often it occurs in this app's engine, and a worked chart in the 2nd house.

In short

Venus and Rahu share a sign in 264 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.8 per cent). Saravali gives the pair no line; BPHS connects them through Rahu's exaltation in Taurus, a Venus sign, and through dasha rules that favour Rahu when it is joined by a benefic. This app detects no yoga for the pair and labels Rahu Neutral in every sign.

A conjunction on this site means two grahas in one sign. With whole-sign houses they share a house as well, and the engine uses no orb. Venus with Rahu pairs the brightest planet in the night sky with a point that cannot be seen at all: Rahu is the Moon's ascending node, a chhaya graha. The classical corpus has more to say about how these two relate through signs and dashas than about the conjunction itself, and this page follows the corpus. For each graha alone, see Venus in Vedic astrology and Rahu in Vedic astrology.

Venus and Rahu as the texts describe them

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 28 makes Shukr charming, splendid in body, "excellent, or great in disposition", with charming eyes, a poet. Sl. 30 makes Rahu smoky in appearance, a forest-dweller, windy and intelligent. Sl. 41-44 dresses Shukr in silk and Rahu in multi-coloured clothes. BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 places Venus at the top of the natural benefics in strength of benefice, while Ch. 3 Sl. 11 lists Rahu among the malefics. The conjunction thus sets the strongest benefic of the list beside a node the text calls malefic.

Saravali puts the contrast in one line. Ch. 4 Sl. 1-2 maps the grahas onto the Kalapurusha, the zodiac as a person: the Sun is the soul, the Moon the mind, Jupiter intelligence, "Venus comforts, Rahu ego and Saturn grief". It adds that strong grahas give their significations strongly and weak ones meagrely. Read that way, the conjunction places the graha of comforts beside the graha of ego, and the strength of each, not their meeting, is what the text says to weigh.

Rahu exalted in a Venus sign

The tie between them in BPHS runs through the signs. Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 gives Vrishabh (Taurus) as Rahu's exaltation, and Taurus is one of Venus's two own signs. Rahu's own sign in that sloka is Kumbh (Aquarius) and its moolatrikona Mithun (Gemini), neither Venus's. So in BPHS the one sign where Rahu is at its strongest belongs to Venus. A Venus-Rahu conjunction in Taurus puts Venus in its own sign and Rahu in its exaltation together.

The texts do not agree on this. Bhrigu Sutras reports that Uttara Kalamrita also exalts Rahu in Taurus, while Sanketnidhi exalts it in Gemini instead. This app sidesteps the question: every node position is labelled "Neutral". Venus's own dignities are not in dispute, and the engine labels them as usual.

Natural friendship (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, naisargika maitri) is defined only for the seven bodies, and the engine has no node row, so no friend or enemy relation is computed for Venus with Rahu.

What the classical texts say about Venus with Rahu

Saravali Ch. 15 reads 21 two-planet pairs and leaves out the nodes, so it has no Venus-Rahu sloka. Bhrigu Sutras' commentary notes the same gap more broadly, saying Saravali does not deal with Rahu and Ketu in the houses. There is no general classical sentence for this pair in the corpus.

The rules that do name both are in the dasha chapters, and they read the pair more favourably than its reputation might suggest. BPHS Ch. 60 Sl. 36-37 describes Rahu's antar dasha within Venus's mahadasha: enjoyment, gain of wealth, visits of friends, successful journeys, land and cattle, if Rahu is in a kendra, a trikona or the 11th, or in its exaltation or own sign, "or is associated with, or receives a Drishti from benefics". Venus is a benefic. A Rahu sharing Venus's sign is associated with one, so the conjunction itself satisfies one of the sloka's alternatives.

In the other direction, BPHS Ch. 55 Sl. 46-47 describes Venus's antar dasha within Rahu's mahadasha: wealth, recognition, high position and comforts, if Venus is strong and in a kendra, trikona or the 11th. That condition concerns Venus's house and strength, not its company. Both slokas go on to list harder results under other placements, which this page does not repeat.

Rahu's own mahadasha, and what Venus supplies

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39, right after giving Rahu's signs, sets out when Rahu's mahadasha goes well. Exalted Rahu brings wealth, conveyances, a new house and recognition. Then a second, composite condition: Rahu associated with or aspected by benefics, in a benefic's sign, and in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, 7th, 10th or 11th house, gives comforts through the favour of government and happiness at home. Sl. 40-43 then reads Rahu in the 8th or 12th as difficult, and Rahu with a malefic likewise.

A Venus-Rahu conjunction supplies two parts of the composite condition at once when it falls in Taurus or Libra: Rahu is associated with a benefic, and it stands in that benefic's sign. In Taurus it adds the exaltation of the first condition as well. Whether the house part is met depends on the ascendant. The table sets out what the conjunction itself contributes in each case.

The 5th house

BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 defines Lajjit avastha: a graha in Putr Bhava, the 5th house, associated with Rahu or Ketu (or the Sun, Saturn or Mars). A Venus-Rahu conjunction in the 5th puts Venus in Lajjit by the text. Elsewhere it does not apply. This app does not compute avasthas, so the label will not appear in your chart.

Node pairs: what the engine does with Rahu beside Venus

Rahu is computed as the mean lunar node (mean node), always flagged retrograde, with Ketu exactly opposite. It is never combust. Venus is combust within 10 degrees of the Sun, or 8 when retrograde. In the 264 sampled conjunctions Venus was combust 34 times and retrograde 23 times.

Rahu leaves Venus's own yogas untouched. Malavya Yoga depends on Venus's sign and kendra placement alone, so a Venus in Taurus, Libra or Pisces in an angle forms it whether or not Rahu is there. Because Rahu rules no sign in the engine, the pair can form no lordship yoga together. And in Kaal Sarp the engine places Venus on one side of the node axis by longitude; sharing Rahu's sign does not decide the side.

Yogas this pair can be part of

None as a pair. The engine has no Venus-Rahu rule. Venus alone counts in yogas built on the Sun's and Moon's neighbours, such as Ubhayachari Yoga, from which the nodes are excluded. The yogas calculator lists what any chart triggers.

Worked example: Venus and Rahu in Aries, 2nd house

The fixed New Delhi search finds this chart first. Birth: 5 June 1985, 02:29 IST, New Delhi. The ascendant is Pisces at 27.77 degrees, so Aries is the 2nd house and Libra, where Ketu sits, the 8th. The birth chart calculator shows the same positions.

  1. Same sign? Yes, Aries. No Saravali line applies.
  2. How far apart? 18.29 degrees. The nakshatras cross over neatly: Venus sits in Ashwini, whose Vimshottari lord is Ketu, and Rahu in Bharani, whose lord is Venus (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 12-14).
  3. Combust? The Sun is in Taurus, more than 45 degrees from Venus. Not combust.
  4. Lordships? With Pisces rising, Venus rules the 3rd and 8th. It is no angle or trine lord, and Rahu rules nothing, so no lordship yoga can come from this pair here.
  5. Dasha lines? By BPHS Ch. 60 Sl. 36-37, Rahu associated with a benefic qualifies for the favourable reading of its antar dasha in Venus's period; here Rahu is also in the 2nd, which is none of the sloka's listed houses, so the association is the alternative that applies.
  6. Rahu's mahadasha conditions (BPHS Ch. 47)? Rahu is not exalted, since it is in Aries. It is associated with a benefic, Venus, but Aries is ruled by Mars, a malefic, and the 2nd is not among the listed houses, so the composite condition is not met either. Neither is the harder Sl. 40-43 case, which needs the 8th or 12th; that is where Ketu stands, opposite.
  7. Yogas? Sunapha (Jupiter in the 2nd from the Moon), Ubhayachari (Mars in the 2nd from the Sun and Venus in the 12th), Damini (six signs occupied) and Vimala (Saturn, lord of the 12th, in the 8th). Rahu takes part in none, and Kaal Sarp is not present.

For the separate placements, read Venus in Aries, Venus in the 2nd house and Rahu in the 2nd house. The example shows which rules fire; it is not a reading of a person.

How often the pair occurs

Venus and Rahu shared a sign in 264 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.8 per cent, close to one chart in eleven. The count is a property of the sample, not of any individual: it says how often the sky shows the pair across these 75 years, and nothing about what the pair means in a chart that has it. Rahu holds a sign for about eighteen months and Venus, keeping near the Sun, passes through it roughly once a year, sometimes lingering when retrograde. The two were within one degree 21 times, and the widest gap inside a sign was 28.42 degrees.

Timing runs through each period: Venus 20 years and Rahu 18 in Vimshottari (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15), two of the longest. See the Venus Mahadasha and the Rahu Mahadasha. Related pairs: Venus-Ketu, Jupiter-Rahu, Saturn-Rahu and Venus-Saturn.

What this page does not claim

There is no classical reading of Venus with Rahu as a pair in this corpus, and this page does not supply one. The dasha lines quoted are conditional, the exaltation of Rahu is disputed between texts, and the Lajjit rule applies to one house only. The app computes positions, combustion and the yogas listed; it attaches no dosha, score or remedy to the conjunction, and other software using the true node can place Rahu slightly differently near a sign boundary.

How common is the Venus-Rahu conjunction?
In this app's engine, 264 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 had the two in one sign, 8.8 per cent.
What does Saravali say about Venus with Rahu?
Nothing. Its two-planet chapter (Ch. 15) covers only the seven grahas, Sun to Saturn.
Is Rahu exalted in a Venus sign?
By BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 and Uttara Kalamrita (as Bhrigu Sutras reports), Rahu is exalted in Taurus, which Venus rules. Sanketnidhi puts it in Gemini. This app labels every node position Neutral.
Does the conjunction help Rahu's periods?
BPHS Ch. 60 Sl. 36-37 reads Rahu's antar dasha in Venus's mahadasha favourably if, among other alternatives, Rahu is associated with a benefic. A Rahu sharing Venus's sign meets that wording.
Which sign is most favourable for this pair by BPHS?
Taurus is the only sign where the conjunction gives Rahu its BPHS exaltation, an association with a benefic and a benefic's sign together (Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39). The house condition of the same sloka still depends on the ascendant.
Does Rahu cancel Malavya Yoga?
Not in this app. Malavya depends on Venus's sign and kendra placement only.
Does the Lajjit rule apply to Venus with Rahu?
Only in the 5th house. BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 puts a graha in Putr Bhava associated with Rahu or Ketu in Lajjit avastha. This app does not compute avasthas.
Can Rahu be combust?
No. The engine tests combustion only for the Moon and the five star-planets. Venus can be; it was in 34 of the 264 sampled conjunctions.
Does the app suggest a remedy for this conjunction?
No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
