In short
Saturn and Rahu share a sign in 201 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (6.7 per cent), in runs roughly every eleven to twelve years. The popular label Shrapit Dosha does not occur in BPHS, Saravali or Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus, and this app does not compute it. The texts link the two closely: Rahu is said to act like Saturn and owns Saturn's sign Aquarius in BPHS.
A conjunction on this site is two grahas in one sign; with whole-sign houses they also share a house, and no orb is applied. Saturn with Rahu brings together the slowest visible planet and the Moon's ascending node, a chhaya graha. Both move slowly, in opposite directions, so the pair arrives in runs of months every decade or so, and every birth in a run shares it. The pair also carries a popular name, which this page addresses first. For each graha separately, see Saturn in Vedic astrology and Rahu in Vedic astrology.
Is this "Shrapit Dosha"?
In popular usage, Saturn joined by Rahu is called Shrapit Dosha. This app does not flag it. A search of the BPHS, Saravali and Bhrigu Sutras translations in this corpus finds no occurrence of the name at all. BPHS does have a chapter on curses carried from a previous birth (Ch. 83), and Saturn with Rahu appears inside some of its multi-part combinations, each needing several other conditions about the 5th house and its lord. That chapter does not define a dosha for the plain conjunction, the app does not use it, and its combinations are not repeated here.
The page therefore treats the pair as the engine does: two placements in one sign, each with its own dignity, house and lordship, plus the classical rules that name them together where those rules exist.
Saturn and Rahu as the texts describe them
Of all the pairs involving a node, this one has the closest classical kinship. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 29 describes Shani as emaciated, windy in temperament and indolent; Sl. 30 calls Rahu windy in temperament too, and intelligent. Sl. 41-44 groups Shani with the nodes as signifying ant-hills. Sl. 47 puts Rahu and Shani in the same class, the Dhatu (mineral) grahas, along with Mars and the Moon. Sl. 11 lists both as malefics.
Bhrigu Sutras, in its section on the nodes, reports the belief that "Rahu acts like Saturn". And BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 gives Rahu Kumbh, Aquarius, as its own sign, which is Saturn's moolatrikona and own sign; Bhrigu Sutras reports Uttara Kalamrita agreeing on Aquarius. So in two texts Rahu is, in effect, a second tenant of a Saturn sign. Rahu's exaltation in that same BPHS sloka is Taurus, a sign of Venus, Saturn's friend. The engine labels Rahu "Neutral" everywhere and has no natural-friendship row for the nodes (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, naisargika maitri), so none of this changes a label in the app.
What the classical texts say about Saturn with Rahu
Saravali's chapter on two-planet conjunctions (Ch. 15) covers only the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn, so there is no Saturn-Rahu sloka. Bhrigu Sutras' commentary notes that Saravali does not deal with the nodes in the houses at all. The corpus has no general reading of the conjunction.
The dasha chapters say the most. BPHS Ch. 57 Sl. 63-64 reads Rahu's antar dasha inside Saturn's mahadasha as difficult unless Rahu is exalted or otherwise well placed. Sl. 65-67 then gives the good case: enjoyment, gains and family well-being at the start of the sub-period if Rahu is associated with the lagna lord or a yoga karaka, or is exalted or in its own sign, or "is in a Kendr, or Labh from Lagn, or from the Lord of the Dasha".
That last clause matters here. In a Saturn-Rahu conjunction, Rahu is in the 1st sign counted from Saturn, the lord of the dasha, and the 1st is a kendra. So the conjunction always meets one alternative of Sl. 65-67, whatever the ascendant. For Capricorn or Aquarius rising, where Saturn is also the lagna lord, it meets a second. Sl. 69-70 adds a counterweight: Rahu associated with the lord of the 2nd or the 7th brings physical distress, and for Capricorn rising Saturn rules the 2nd as well. The text sets both readings side by side.
In the reverse, BPHS Ch. 55 Sl. 21-24 reads Saturn's antar dasha inside Rahu's mahadasha by Saturn's own placement: in a kendra, a trikona, exaltation, its own sign or moolatrikona, or the 3rd or 11th. Rahu's company is not a condition there.
Rahu's own mahadasha beside a malefic
Rahu's full mahadasha has its own conditions in BPHS Ch. 47, and here the conjunction cuts the other way. Sl. 34-39 reads the period well when Rahu is exalted, or joined by benefics in a benefic's sign in a good house. Sl. 40-43 reads it as hard when Rahu is in the 8th or 12th, in its debilitation, or "associated with a malefic". Saturn is a malefic by BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11, so a Rahu sharing Saturn's sign meets that clause. The same sloka still describes a mixed course for such a period, with losses early, some relief in the middle and anxieties at the end, rather than a single verdict.
Put together, the dasha chapters give this pair no simple sign. Within Saturn's mahadasha, the Rahu sub-period meets a favourable clause by the conjunction itself; within Rahu's own mahadasha, the same conjunction meets an unfavourable one. Both are conditional readings of time periods, reported as the text states them, and neither is a reading this app computes or displays.
Node pairs: what the engine does with this pair
Rahu is the mean lunar node (mean node), always retrograde, with Ketu exactly opposite and never combust. Saturn is combust within 15 degrees of the Sun; it was in 20 of the 201 sampled conjunctions. Saturn was retrograde in 69 of them, so about a third of the time both members of the pair were moving backward together.
Rahu does not touch Saturn's yogas. Sasa Yoga depends only on Saturn's sign and kendra placement. Because Rahu owns no sign in the engine, the pair forms no lordship yoga together, though Saturn alone can form one with another lord in the same house, as the example shows. In Kaal Sarp, the engine sides Saturn by longitude from Rahu, so the shared sign does not decide its side.
When the pair happens, 1985-2060
Saturn moves forward through the zodiac in about two and a half years per sign; Rahu moves backward in about eighteen months. Running the engine daily (noon IST, edges good to about a day) gives these spans:
| Years | Spans with Saturn and Rahu in one sign | Sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1990-91 | 22 Mar - 19 Jun 1990; 15 Dec 1990 - 12 Apr 1991 | Capricorn |
| 2002-03 | 17 Feb - 23 Jul 2002; 6 Jan - 9 Apr 2003 | Taurus |
| 2012-14 | 24 Dec 2012 - 12 Jul 2014 | Libra |
| 2025 | 29 Mar - 18 May 2025 | Pisces |
| 2036 | 25 Mar - 27 Aug 2036 | Cancer |
| 2047-48 | 30 Jan 2047 - 17 Aug 2048 | Sagittarius |
| 2059 | 30 May - 24 Jun 2059 | Taurus |
The runs come roughly every eleven to twelve years and vary greatly in length. The 2012-14 Libra run lasted about a year and a half and the 2047-48 Sagittarius run will too, while the 2025 Pisces run lasted seven weeks and the 2059 one less than four. The short runs happen when the two meet near a sign boundary and pass each other quickly.
Yogas this pair can be part of
None as a pair: the engine has no Saturn-Rahu rule, and Shrapit is not computed. Saturn keeps every yoga it forms alone. The yogas calculator lists what a chart triggers, and what a yoga in your chart means explains the list.
Worked example: Saturn and Rahu in Capricorn, 1st house
The fixed New Delhi search finds this chart first, inside the 1990 run. Birth: 29 March 1990, 03:30 IST, New Delhi. The ascendant is Capricorn at 17.19 degrees, so Capricorn is the 1st house. Check it in the birth chart calculator.
| Graha | Position | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Engine flags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saturn | Capricorn 0.46 | Uttara Ashadha (2) | 1 | Own sign; direct; not combust |
| Mars | Capricorn 19.10 | Shravana (3) | 1 | Exalted |
| Rahu | Capricorn 20.14 | Shravana (4) | 1 | Neutral; retrograde (always) |
| Venus | Capricorn 27.80 | Dhanishta (2) | 1 | Neutral |
- Same sign? Yes, Capricorn, Saturn's own sign. No Saravali line applies.
- How far apart? 19.68 degrees. Saturn sits at the very start of the sign; Rahu is near Mars, about a degree away.
- Combust? The Sun is at Pisces 14.25, far from Saturn. Not combust.
- Saturn's yogas: Sasa Yoga (Saturn in its own sign in a kendra) is detected with Rahu in the same house. With Capricorn rising, Saturn rules the 1st and 2nd, Venus the 5th and 10th, Mars the 4th and 11th; the engine lists Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) for Saturn with Venus, Mars with Saturn, and Mars with Venus, all together in the 1st. Rahu has no part in it.
- Dasha rules: for Rahu's antar dasha in Saturn's period, Rahu is in a kendra from the dasha lord and joined to the lagna lord (BPHS Ch. 57 Sl. 65-67). Saturn is also lord of the 2nd here, which is the Sl. 69-70 condition. Both readings apply as the text gives them.
- Other yogas: Anapha, Kedara, Argala Raj Yoga, Ruchaka (Mars exalted in a kendra), Vimala (Jupiter, lord of the 12th, in the 6th) and Parivarthana (Mercury and Jupiter). Kaal Sarp is not present.
A chart carrying the popular "Shrapit" pair here also carries two Panchamahapurusha yogas and a Raj Yoga, computed from the same positions. For the parts, see Saturn in Capricorn, Saturn in the 1st house and Rahu in the 1st house. The example demonstrates rules, not a person.
How often the pair occurs
Saturn and Rahu shared a sign in 201 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 6.7 per cent; within one degree in 7. The widest gap inside a sign in the sample was 23.09 degrees. Timing runs through each graha: Saturn 19 years and Rahu 18 (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). See the Saturn Mahadasha and the Rahu Mahadasha. Related pairs: Saturn-Ketu, Jupiter-Rahu, Mars-Saturn and Jupiter-Saturn.
What this page does not claim
This page does not call the conjunction a dosha, and it does not call it harmless. It reports that the popular name is absent from the classical corpus here, that the texts give the two a close kinship, and that the dasha chapters read the pair both ways under stated conditions. The app computes positions, combustion and yogas and attaches no dosha, score or remedy to the pair.
- Does this app flag Shrapit Dosha?
- No. The name does not occur in BPHS, Saravali or Bhrigu Sutras in this corpus, and the engine has no rule for it.
- How common is the Saturn-Rahu conjunction?
- In this app's engine, 201 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 6.7 per cent, in runs roughly every eleven to twelve years.
- When are Saturn and Rahu next in one sign?
- By this app's engine, after the brief 2025 Pisces span the next run is 25 March to 27 August 2036 in Cancer.
- Why do the texts link Rahu with Saturn?
- Bhrigu Sutras reports the belief that Rahu acts like Saturn; BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 gives Rahu Aquarius, a Saturn sign, as its own; and BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 47 puts both among the Dhatu grahas.
- What does BPHS say about the dasha periods of this pair?
- Ch. 57 Sl. 65-67 favours Rahu's sub-period within Saturn's mahadasha when Rahu is in a kendra from Saturn, which the conjunction always satisfies. Ch. 47 Sl. 40-43 reads Rahu's own mahadasha as difficult when Rahu is associated with a malefic, which Saturn is. The text gives both under stated conditions.
- Are both grahas retrograde together?
- Rahu always is in this app. Saturn was retrograde in 69 of the 201 sampled conjunctions.
- Does Rahu cancel Sasa Yoga?
- Not in this app. Sasa depends only on Saturn's sign and kendra placement, as the worked example shows.
- Does the app suggest a remedy for this conjunction?
- No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, pujas, rituals or donations for any placement.
