In short
Saturn and Ketu share a sign in 274 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (9.1 per cent), in runs roughly every eleven to twelve years. Saravali has no line for the pair; Bhrigu Sutras names it once, for the 7th house, and BPHS reads Saturn's aspect on Ketu in the Karakamsa as penance or service. This app detects no yoga for the pair.
On this site two grahas in one sign are conjunct. The houses are whole signs, so they share a house, and the engine uses no orb. Saturn and Ketu are both slow, Saturn moving forward and Ketu (the Moon's descending node, a chhaya graha) backward, so the pair comes in runs lasting months to more than a year, about a decade apart. This page gathers what the corpus says, how the engine treats the pair, the dates, and a chart in which the two stand less than half a degree apart. For each graha alone, see Saturn in Vedic astrology and Ketu in Vedic astrology.
Saturn and Ketu as the texts describe them
BPHS Ch. 3 lists both as malefics (Sl. 11) and groups Shani with the nodes as signifying ant-hills (Sl. 41-44), where Ketu also gets rags for clothing. The Dhatu, Mula and Jiva classification of Sl. 47 separates them: Shani is a Dhatu graha with Rahu, Mangal and the Moon, while Ketu rules Jivas with Budh and Guru. So where Saturn and Rahu share a class, Saturn and Ketu do not.
Bhrigu Sutras sharpens the contrast. It reports a belief that "Rahu acts like Saturn and Ketu acts like Mars". In the natural friendship table this app uses (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, naisargika maitri), Mars is one of Saturn's enemies. If the belief is carried across, Ketu would stand to Saturn roughly as Mars does. The engine does not carry it across: it has no friendship row for the nodes and computes no relation between Saturn and Ketu.
Ketu's sign, Saturn's guest
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 makes Vrischik (Scorpio) both Ketu's exaltation and its own sign. Scorpio is a Mars sign, and Saturn counts Mars an enemy, so a Saturn-Ketu conjunction in Scorpio, as in the worked example, has Ketu at its strongest by BPHS and Saturn in a sign whose lord it naturally dislikes. Sanketnidhi, as Bhrigu Sutras reports, exalts Ketu in Sagittarius instead. The engine labels Ketu "Neutral" in every sign, so none of this shows in the app.
What the classical texts say about Saturn with Ketu
Saravali Ch. 15 has no sloka for a node pair; its two-planet readings stop with Venus and Saturn. Among the node pairs on this site, though, this one has something rare: a classical sutra that names the conjunction in so many words.
Bhrigu Sutras, on Saturn in the 7th house (Sutras 32-36), gives a reading about the native's intimate life for Saturn in its own or exaltation sign there, and then says "The effect will be the same if Saturn is in conjunction with Ketu." The commentator softens the sutra in his own note, writing that the native will not be so extreme when Saturn is dignified. It applies to the 7th house only and is reported as the text's claim, without its detail.
BPHS has a rule about Saturn and Ketu in the Karakamsa, the navamsa sign of the Atma Karaka, though it concerns an aspect. Ch. 33 Sl. 25-29 reads the drishtis falling on Ketu when Ketu occupies the Karakamsa. With Shani's drishti on that Ketu, one "will perform penance, or be a servant, or will be a pseudo-ascetic". With Budh and Shani both aspecting it, one is devoid of strength. These are the corpus's only shared themes for the pair. The Karakamsa calculator finds the sign.
The sloka is worth reading as a set, because it shows where Saturn sits among the possible aspects. A malefic aspect on Ketu in the Karakamsa is read as ear trouble. Shukr's aspect marks initiation into a religious order. Shukr and the Sun together mark service to the king. Saturn's aspect gives three alternatives, penance, service or a false show of asceticism. Both Venus and Saturn, then, turn Ketu towards renunciation in this rule, Venus towards the real thing and Saturn towards an uncertain mix. The Venus-Ketu page covers Venus's side of the same sloka. All of it concerns aspects in a navamsa-based chart, not the birth-chart conjunction this page is about.
The dasha chapters
BPHS Ch. 57 Sl. 16-18 reads Ketu's antar dasha inside Saturn's mahadasha as difficult "even if Ketu is in his exaltation", in its own or a benefic sign, or joined by benefics. Its one exception is Ketu "related to the Lagn's Lord", which brings gain and pilgrimage. For Capricorn or Aquarius rising, Saturn is the lagna lord, and a Saturn-Ketu conjunction relates Ketu to it directly; for other ascendants the conjunction does not meet the exception. The same chapter then prescribes propitiation, which this app does not.
In the reverse, BPHS Ch. 59 Sl. 61-65 reads Saturn's antar dasha inside Ketu's mahadasha by Saturn's own strength and dignity, with the 8th and 12th houses singled out as harder. Ketu's company is not a condition.
Node pairs: what the engine does with this pair
Ketu is placed exactly opposite the mean Rahu (mean node), flagged retrograde and never combust. Saturn is combust within 15 degrees of the Sun; it was in 29 of the 274 sampled conjunctions, and retrograde in 103, well over a third of them.
The pair can be very close. In 28 of the 274 conjunctions the two were within one degree. A reader who knows BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 9 may wonder about planetary war, but that sloka limits war to Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn; the nodes are not in it, and the engine computes no war in any case. Ketu leaves Sasa Yoga alone, since it depends on Saturn's sign and kendra placement. In Kaal Sarp the engine sides Saturn by its longitude relative to the axis, so a Saturn a fraction of a degree from Ketu sits right at the edge of one side.
When the pair happens, 1985-2060
Daily engine runs (noon IST, edges good to about a day) give these spans. The first began before the sample started on 1 January 1985.
| Years | Spans with Saturn and Ketu in one sign | Sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1985 | to 29 Jan 1985 (began earlier) | Scorpio |
| 1985 | 1 Jun - 16 Sep 1985 | Libra |
| 1996-97 | 18 Feb 1996 - 24 Jun 1997 | Pisces |
| 2006-08 | 4 Nov 2006 - 7 Jan 2007; 17 Jul 2007 - 30 Apr 2008 | Leo |
| 2019-20 | 7 Mar 2019 - 23 Jan 2020 | Sagittarius |
| 2030-31 | 17 Apr 2030 - 30 Jul 2031 | Taurus |
| 2041-42 | 27 Sep 2041 - 5 Jun 2042 | Libra |
| 2053-54 | 12 Apr 2053 - 15 May 2054; 31 Aug - 29 Oct 2054 | Aquarius |
The runs fall about eleven to twelve years apart, like Saturn's meetings with Rahu, and offset from them by roughly half that interval, since Ketu is always opposite Rahu. In 1985 Saturn left Ketu in Scorpio, then met it again in Libra a few months later, when Saturn stepped back by retrograde motion while the node kept retreating.
Yogas this pair can be part of
None as a pair: the engine has no Saturn-Ketu rule, and Ketu owns no sign, so it cannot join a lordship yoga. Saturn keeps the yogas it forms alone. The yogas calculator lists what a chart triggers.
Worked example: Saturn and Ketu in Scorpio, 1st house
This is the first chart in the fixed New Delhi search, and it is the very first moment of the search: 1 January 1985, 06:00 IST, New Delhi. The ascendant is Scorpio at 28.81 degrees, so Scorpio is the 1st house. Enter it in the birth chart calculator to check.
| Point | Position | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Engine flags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Saturn | Scorpio 1.09 | Vishakha (4) | 1 | Neutral; direct; not combust |
| Ketu | Scorpio 1.51 | Vishakha (4) | 1 | Neutral; retrograde (always) |
| Mercury | Scorpio 24.36 | Jyeshtha (3) | 1 | Friendly sign |
| Rahu | Taurus 1.51 | Krittika (2) | 7 | Neutral; retrograde (always) |
- Same sign? Yes, Scorpio. No Saravali line applies.
- How far apart? 0.42 degrees, both in the same pada of Vishakha. This is one of the 28-in-274 close cases; BPHS's planetary war does not apply to a node.
- Dignity by text? Ketu in Scorpio is exalted and in its own sign by BPHS Ch. 47; the engine says Neutral. Saturn is in Mars's sign; the engine reports it Neutral too.
- Combust? The Sun is in Sagittarius, about 46 degrees from Saturn. Not combust.
- Lordships? With Scorpio rising, Saturn rules the 3rd and 4th; Mars is the lagna lord, so the BPHS Ch. 57 exception for Ketu related to the lagna lord is not met by this conjunction.
- Yogas? Vasi (Mercury and Saturn in the 12th from the Sun), Kedara (four signs occupied), Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) through Venus with Mars and the Sun with Jupiter, and Parivarthana between Mars and Saturn, which sit in each other's signs. Ketu takes part in none, and Kaal Sarp is not present.
What the chart shows is how little the closeness changes in the app. Saturn and Ketu are as close as they get, yet every rule the engine fires here comes from signs, houses and lordships: the Mars-Saturn exchange, the Sun's neighbours, the count of occupied signs. Ketu at 0.42 degrees from Saturn alters none of them. The closeness matters only to readings the engine does not compute, such as a reader's own judgement of how strongly the node colours Saturn.
The same moment is the worked example for Mercury-Saturn and Mercury-Ketu, because Scorpio holds all three. For the single placements, see Saturn in Scorpio, Saturn in the 1st house and Ketu in the 1st house. The example is a demonstration, not a reading of a person.
How often the pair occurs
Saturn and Ketu shared a sign in 274 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 9.1 per cent, against 201 for Saturn with Rahu in the same sample; the engine treats the nodes symmetrically, so the gap reflects how the runs fell in this span. The widest gap inside a sign was 28.49 degrees. Timing runs through each graha: Saturn 19 years, Ketu 7 (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). See the Saturn Mahadasha and the Ketu Mahadasha. Related pairs: Saturn-Rahu, Jupiter-Ketu, Venus-Ketu and Mars-Saturn.
What this page does not claim
The corpus gives this pair no general reading. The one sutra that names it is limited to the 7th house; the BPHS rules concern an aspect in the Karakamsa and the course of dasha periods. Each is reported as the text states it. The app computes positions, combustion and yogas, attaches no dosha, score or remedy to the conjunction, and follows the mean node, so other software can move Ketu slightly near a boundary.
- How common is the Saturn-Ketu conjunction?
- In this app's engine, 274 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 9.1 per cent, in runs about eleven to twelve years apart.
- When are Saturn and Ketu next in one sign?
- By this app's engine, from 17 April 2030 to 30 July 2031 in Taurus.
- Does any classical text name the Saturn-Ketu conjunction?
- Bhrigu Sutras does, once, for Saturn in the 7th house (Sutras 32-36). Saravali and BPHS have no reading of the conjunction itself.
- Can Saturn and Ketu be in planetary war?
- No. BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 9 limits planetary war to Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, and this app does not compute war at all.
- Is Ketu exalted in Scorpio?
- By BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39, yes, and Scorpio is also its own sign there. Sanketnidhi disagrees. The engine labels every node position Neutral.
- How does BPHS read the dasha periods of this pair?
- Ch. 57 Sl. 16-18 reads Ketu's sub-period within Saturn's mahadasha as hard even when Ketu is well placed, except when Ketu is related to the lagna lord. For Capricorn or Aquarius rising, Saturn is that lord, so the conjunction meets the exception.
- How close do Saturn and Ketu get?
- In the sample, within one degree in 28 of the 274 conjunctions. The worked example has them 0.42 degrees apart in the same pada of Vishakha.
- Does Ketu cancel Sasa Yoga?
- Not in this app. Sasa depends only on Saturn's sign and kendra placement.
- Does the app suggest a remedy for this conjunction?
- No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
