In short
Jupiter and Ketu share a sign in 225 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (7.5 per cent). Saravali has no line for the pair, while BPHS links them in the 5th from the Karakamsa, where Ketu marks mathematics and Jyotish and Jupiter's connection makes the learning inherited. This app detects no yoga for the pair and leaves Jupiter's own yogas untouched by Ketu.
On this site, two grahas in one sign are conjunct; with whole-sign houses they share a house, and the engine applies no orb. Jupiter and Ketu make a quieter node pair than Jupiter and Rahu. There is no famous popular label for it, and the classical corpus has one rule that joins the two in a sense rather than a warning. That rule, the engine's handling, the dates and a worked chart are what follow. For the grahas alone, read Jupiter in Vedic astrology and Ketu in Vedic astrology.
Jupiter and Ketu as the texts describe them
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 27 draws Guru as large in body and "learned in Shastras". For Ketu, Sl. 30 says only that it is akin to Rahu, who is smoky, windy and intelligent. Sl. 11 lists Ketu among the malefics, while Guru is a natural benefic. One grouping does put them together: in Sl. 47 Budh, Guru and Ketu are the three rulers of Jivas, living things, set against the Dhatu (mineral) and Mula (root) grahas. Rahu, by contrast, is a Dhatu graha. Of the two nodes, Ketu is the one BPHS files beside Jupiter.
Ketu has no row in the natural friendship table (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, naisargika maitri), and the engine has none either, so no friend or enemy relation is computed for the pair. Bhrigu Sutras records the belief that "Ketu acts like Mars"; Mars is one of Jupiter's natural friends in the engine's table. That is a reported belief carried one step, and the app does not take the step.
What the classical texts say about Jupiter with Ketu
Saravali Ch. 15 gives no line for a node pair; its 21 two-planet readings stop at Venus with Saturn. The general reading a reader might look for does not exist in this corpus.
BPHS has one rule that genuinely joins the two, and it is about learning. Ch. 33 treats the Karakamsa, the navamsa sign of the Atma Karaka, and Sl. 87-92 reads the grahas in the 5th from it. Guru there denotes an exponent who is "all knowing", a grammarian and a scholar of the Vedas and Upanishads. Ketu there makes one a mathematician and skilful in Jyotish. Then the sloka adds: should Guru be related to that Ketu, these learnings will be by inheritance. The Karakamsa calculator finds the sign the rule counts from.
The rest of the same sloka shows what the rule is doing. It assigns each graha in the 5th from the Karakamsa a kind of learning: Shukr makes one eloquent and a poet, Shani ineffective in an assembly, Budh skilful in Karma Mimansa, Mangal a judge, the Moon a Sankhya yogi, rhetorician or singer, the Sun learned in Vedanta and music. Guru's entry adds a twist: all-knowing, yet "unable to speak in an assembly". Ketu's entry is the only one that the sloka then qualifies by another graha, and the qualifier is Jupiter. In a list where every graha has a field of its own, the text singles out Jupiter's link to Ketu as changing how that learning arrives.
The verses just before it in Ch. 33 grade writing ability by the graha involved, with Guru giving a writer "well versed in all branches of learning", Shukr less so and Budh less again. Read together, the chapter treats Jupiter as the graha of scholarship and Ketu as the graha of calculation and Jyotish, and their meeting as scholarship passed down. That is the full extent of the classical case for this pair.
Notice how narrow it is. The rule is about the 5th from the Karakamsa, a navamsa-based point, not about the two grahas sharing a sign in the birth chart. Jupiter "related to" Ketu there can be a conjunction or another link. Still, it is the one place in the corpus where the pair reads as a combination with a meaning of its own.
The other rules that mention both are about one graha with any node. Bhrigu Sutras, for Jupiter in the 5th (Sutras 24-31), reads Jupiter with Rahu or Ketu as trouble over children, attributing it to the "wrath of Serpent God", and in the same sutra cancels it when Jupiter is aspected by a benefic. That is the text's claim and its own exception, stated together.
The dasha chapters
BPHS Ch. 56 Sl. 32 gives Ketu's antar dasha inside Jupiter's mahadasha moderate results, moderate gain and moderate enjoyment, when Ketu "is associated with, or receives a Drishti from a benefic". A Ketu sharing Jupiter's sign is associated with a benefic by that wording, so this is the one dasha line the conjunction itself can satisfy. In the reverse, BPHS Ch. 59 Sl. 53-54 makes Jupiter's antar dasha in Ketu's mahadasha good when Jupiter is exalted, in its own sign, or joined with the lords of the 1st, 9th or 10th in a kendra or trikona; those conditions concern Jupiter, not Ketu.
Ketu's own mahadasha has a sign condition that this pair can meet. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 reads Ketu's dasha favourably when Ketu is in a kendra, a trikona or the 11th, "in a benefic Rashi", or in its exaltation or own sign. Jupiter's two signs, Sagittarius and Pisces, are benefic signs, so a Jupiter-Ketu conjunction in either puts Ketu in a benefic's sign with the benefic itself present. The Sagittarius runs of 2019-20 in the table below and the Pisces span of 2034 are such cases. The other conditions in the sloka still have to be checked separately.
Node pairs: Ketu in the engine
Ketu is placed exactly 180 degrees from the mean Rahu (see mean node), flagged retrograde and given the dignity "Neutral" in every sign. As a chhaya graha it owns no sign, so it rules no house and cannot join Jupiter in a lordship yoga. It is never combust.
Jupiter can be. The engine marks it combust within 11 degrees of the Sun, and a combust graha's position strength is set to zero in Shad Bala. In the 225 sampled conjunctions Jupiter was combust 11 times and retrograde 70 times. Combustion, not Ketu, is what can stop Jupiter's Gaj Kesari Yoga in this engine, whose obstacles (from BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4) are debilitation, combustion and an enemy sign. In Kaal Sarp, the engine sides Jupiter by its longitude relative to the axis, which sharing Ketu's sign does not decide.
When the pair happens, 1985-2060
Jupiter advances about a sign a year and Ketu retreats about a sign every eighteen months, so they meet every six to eight years. Daily engine runs (noon IST, edges good to about a day) give these spans:
| Years | Spans with Jupiter and Ketu in one sign | Sign |
|---|---|---|
| 1990-91 | 21 Jul 1990 - 12 Apr 1991 | Cancer |
| 1998-99 | 8 Jan - 25 May 1998; 11 Sep 1998 - 11 Jan 1999 | Aquarius |
| 2005 | 25 Mar - 27 Sep 2005 | Virgo |
| 2012 | 18 May - 23 Dec 2012 | Taurus |
| 2019-20 | 29 Mar - 23 Apr 2019; 5 Nov 2019 - 29 Mar 2020; 30 Jun - 23 Sep 2020 | Sagittarius |
| 2026-27 | 31 Oct - 5 Dec 2026 (Leo); 25 Jan - 25 Jun 2027 (Cancer) | Leo, Cancer |
| 2034 | 28 Mar - 5 Sep 2034 | Pisces |
| 2040-42 | 4 Dec 2040 - 6 May 2041; 31 Jul 2041 - 2 Jan 2042 | Libra |
| 2048-49 | 12 - 17 Aug 2048 (Gemini); 29 Dec 2048 - 2 Apr 2049 (Taurus) | Gemini, Taurus |
| 2056 | 31 Jan - 17 May 2056 | Capricorn |
The 2026-27 run is the next one from this page's date. Its first span is in Leo; the second follows after both have moved back into Cancer, Jupiter by its own motion and Ketu by the node's steady retreat. The 2048 Gemini span lasts only six days by this engine, the kind of edge case where other software may disagree.
Yogas this pair can be part of
None as a pair. The engine has no Jupiter-Ketu rule, and Ketu enters no lordship yoga. Jupiter keeps every yoga it would form alone, including Hamsa Yoga when it is in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra. The yogas calculator lists what a chart triggers.
Worked example: Jupiter and Ketu in Cancer, 10th house
The first chart the fixed New Delhi search finds falls in the 1990-91 run. Birth: 25 July 1990, 13:31 IST, New Delhi. The ascendant is Libra at 19.99 degrees, so Cancer is the 10th house. The birth chart calculator reproduces it.
| Graha | Position | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Engine flags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jupiter | Cancer 1.06 | Punarvasu (4) | 10 | Exalted; direct; combust |
| Sun | Cancer 8.41 | Pushya (2) | 10 | Friendly sign |
| Ketu | Cancer 13.86 | Pushya (4) | 10 | Neutral; retrograde (always) |
| Rahu | Capricorn 13.86 | Shravana (2) | 4 | Neutral; retrograde (always) |
- Same sign? Yes, Cancer, Jupiter's exaltation sign. No Saravali line applies.
- How far apart? 12.8 degrees, with the Sun between them: Jupiter at 1.06, the Sun at 8.41, Ketu at 13.86.
- Combust? Jupiter is 7.35 degrees behind the Sun, inside the 11-degree orb, so the engine marks it combust and its Shad Bala position strength is zeroed, exaltation notwithstanding.
- Hamsa? Listed. The engine's Panchamahapurusha test looks at Jupiter's sign and kendra placement, and Jupiter is exalted in the 10th.
- Gaj Kesari? Not listed. Combustion is one of the BPHS obstacles the engine applies. Ketu plays no part.
- Other yogas: Anapha, Ubhayachari, Pasa, Argala Raj Yoga, Ruchaka (Mars in Aries in the 7th), Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) through Venus with Saturn and the Moon with Mercury, and Parivarthana through the Sun and Moon. Ketu takes part in none. Kaal Sarp is not present.
The chart is a good illustration of what changes a Jupiter reading in this app: the Sun four degrees away matters more than Ketu in the same sign. For the parts, see Jupiter in Cancer, Jupiter in the 10th house and Ketu in the 10th house. It is not a reading of a person.
How often the pair occurs
Jupiter and Ketu shared a sign in 225 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.5 per cent, and were within one degree in 15. The widest gap inside a sign was 28.94 degrees. Timing goes through each graha alone: Jupiter 16 years, Ketu 7 (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 15). See the Jupiter Mahadasha and the Ketu Mahadasha. Related pairs: Jupiter-Rahu, Saturn-Ketu, Mercury-Ketu and Venus-Ketu.
What this page does not claim
The Karakamsa rule is reported because it is the only classical sentence in this corpus that gives the two a shared meaning; it is not a promise of scholarship, and it applies to a navamsa-based point rather than the birth-chart conjunction. The app computes positions, combustion, strength and yogas, attaches no label or remedy to the pair, and follows the mean node, so other software can move Ketu slightly near a boundary.
- How common is the Jupiter-Ketu conjunction?
- In this app's engine, 225 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 7.5 per cent, in runs every six to eight years.
- What does BPHS say about Jupiter with Ketu?
- Its one pairing rule is in Ch. 33 Sl. 87-92: Ketu in the 5th from the Karakamsa marks mathematics and Jyotish, and if Jupiter is related to that Ketu the learning is inherited.
- When are Jupiter and Ketu next in one sign?
- By this app's engine, from 31 October to 5 December 2026 in Leo, then 25 January to 25 June 2027 in Cancer.
- Does Ketu weaken Jupiter in this app?
- No. Ketu changes none of Jupiter's yogas or strength scores. Combustion by the Sun does, as the worked example shows.
- Does the Karakamsa rule apply to my birth-chart conjunction?
- Not directly. BPHS Ch. 33 Sl. 87-92 is about the 5th sign from the Karakamsa, a navamsa-based point, and Jupiter being related to a Ketu there. A birth-chart conjunction may or may not meet it.
- Is Ketu a benefic or a malefic?
- BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 lists both nodes among the malefics, and the engine's malefic list includes Ketu.
- Does the app suggest a remedy for this conjunction?
- No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
