Venus with Ketu in one sign: why Saravali is silent, how Vimshottari always runs Ketu's period straight into Venus's, the BPHS rules that pair them, how often the pair occurs, and a worked chart with Venus in moolatrikona.

In short

Venus and Ketu share a sign in 247 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (8.2 per cent). Saravali has no line for the pair; BPHS links them through the Vimshottari order, where Ketu's 7-year period always hands over to Venus's 20, and through a dasha rule the conjunction itself satisfies. This app detects no yoga for the pair and labels Ketu Neutral.

Two grahas in one sign are conjunct on this site, a yuti. Houses are whole signs, so the pair shares a house, and no orb is applied. Venus with Ketu joins the graha of charm and comfort with the Moon's descending node, a shadow graha with no body. What ties these two together in the classical texts is mostly time: in the Vimshottari scheme they are neighbours. This page covers that, the few rules that name them, the engine's handling and one chart. For each graha alone, see Venus in Vedic astrology and Ketu in Vedic astrology.

Venus and Ketu as the texts describe them

BPHS Ch. 3 contrasts them sharply. Sl. 28 makes Shukr charming, splendid and a poet; Sl. 30 says only that Ketu is akin to Rahu, smoky and intelligent. Sl. 41-44 gives Shukr silken robes and Ketu rags. Sl. 47 puts Shukr among the Mula (root) grahas with the Sun, and Ketu among the Jiva (living) grahas with Mercury and Jupiter. Sl. 11 lists Ketu as a malefic, and Ch. 34 Sl. 8-10 makes Venus the strongest of the natural benefics. On the classical lists the two have almost nothing in common.

Bhrigu Sutras reports the belief that "Ketu acts like Mars". In the engine's natural table (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, naisargika maitri) Venus and Mars are neutral to each other, neither listing the other as friend or enemy. The engine gives Ketu no row of its own, so it computes no relation for Venus with Ketu, and the belief is not built into anything.

Ketu's strong sign is disputed

BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 makes Vrischik (Scorpio) both Ketu's exaltation and its own sign, with Dhanu its moolatrikona; some, it notes, give Meen as Ketu's own. Bhrigu Sutras records Sanketnidhi exalting Ketu in Sagittarius instead. None of these is a Venus sign. Scorpio is the sign opposite Taurus, Venus's own, and the same sloka exalts Rahu in Taurus. The engine reports every node position as "Neutral" and takes no side.

What the classical texts say about Venus with Ketu

Saravali Ch. 15 covers two-planet conjunctions among the seven grahas only. Its last sloka for a pair is Venus-Saturn; the nodes do not appear. No general classical reading of Venus with Ketu exists in this corpus.

BPHS has a rule about the two in the Karakamsa, though it is about an aspect, not a conjunction. Ch. 33 Sl. 25-29 reads the aspects falling on Ketu when Ketu occupies the Karakamsa, the navamsa sign of the Atma Karaka. Shukr's drishti on that Ketu "denotes one, initiated into religious order", and Shukr and the Sun together aspecting it make one serve the king. Ketu's link to renunciation through Venus's glance is the only place the corpus gives this pair a shared theme. The Karakamsa calculator finds the sign the rule counts from.

BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 applies to the conjunction directly in one house: a graha in Putr Bhava (the 5th) associated with Rahu or Ketu is in Lajjit avastha. A Venus-Ketu conjunction in the 5th puts Venus in Lajjit by the text. This app does not compute avasthas.

Consecutive dasha lords

BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 12-14 lists the Vimshottari lords in fixed order from Krittika: Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Ketu, Venus. Ketu comes directly before Venus, and the order wraps round, so in every chart the 7-year Ketu mahadasha is followed by the 20-year Venus mahadasha (Sl. 15). The same order gives the nakshatras: Ketu rules Ashwini, Magha and Mula, and Venus the next ones, Bharani, Purva Phalguni and Purva Ashadha.

Ketu's nakshatraVenus's nakshatra (next)Both inside
Ashwini (0 - 13.33)Bharani (13.33 - 26.67)Aries
Magha (0 - 13.33)Purva Phalguni (13.33 - 26.67)Leo
Mula (0 - 13.33)Purva Ashadha (13.33 - 26.67)Sagittarius
Lords from BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 12-14; 13 degrees 20 minutes per nakshatra.

The table shows a neat consequence of that order. Each Ketu nakshatra opens a fire sign, and the Venus nakshatra that follows it lies in the same sign. So in Aries, Leo and Sagittarius the first two-thirds of the sign are split between Ketu's star and Venus's. A Venus-Ketu conjunction in one of those signs can put one graha in the other's nakshatra; the worked chart on the Venus-Rahu page has Venus in Ketu's Ashwini. By the rule of Ch. 46, a birth in a Ketu nakshatra also begins life in Ketu's dasha, and Venus's 20 years come next.

That adjacency is true of every chart, conjunction or not. What the conjunction adds is a link the dasha chapters can read. BPHS Ch. 59 Sl. 10-11 says Venus's antar dasha inside Ketu's mahadasha brings sound health, family well-being, good food and conveyances if Venus is in a kendra, a trikona, or the 3rd or 11th "from the Lord of the Dasha". A Venus in Ketu's own sign is in the 1st from Ketu, which is both a kendra and a trikona counted from it. The conjunction satisfies the sloka by construction. Ch. 59 Sl. 7-9 adds a stronger reading when Venus is exalted or in its own sign. See the Ketu Mahadasha and the Venus Mahadasha, and the Vimshottari dasha calculator for the dates in a chart.

The reverse rule is less tied to the pair. BPHS Ch. 60 Sl. 67-68 reads Ketu's antar dasha inside Venus's mahadasha well if Ketu is exalted, in its own sign, related to a yoga karaka, or has positional strength, and the translator adds that the text nowhere says where Ketu gets positional strength. Venus's company is not among those conditions unless Venus is the chart's yoga karaka. And BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 reads Ketu's own mahadasha favourably when Ketu is in a kendra, trikona or the 11th, or "in a benefic Rashi", so a Venus-Ketu conjunction in Taurus or Libra places Ketu in a benefic's sign.

Node pairs: Ketu in the engine

Ketu is placed 180 degrees from the mean Rahu (mean node), always retrograde, never combust, ruling no sign. Venus is combust within 10 degrees of the Sun, 8 when retrograde; in the 247 sampled conjunctions it was combust 41 times and retrograde 17 times. Ketu changes nothing in Venus's yogas: Malavya Yoga depends only on Venus's sign and kendra placement, as the worked example shows. In Kaal Sarp the engine sides Venus by longitude, so sharing Ketu's sign does not settle which side of the axis it is on.

Yogas this pair can be part of

None as a pair. The engine has no Venus-Ketu rule, and Ketu takes part in no lordship yoga. Venus keeps the yogas it forms on its own. The yogas calculator lists what any chart triggers, and what a yoga in your chart means explains how to read the list.

Worked example: Venus and Ketu in Libra, 4th house

The fixed New Delhi search finds this chart first. Birth: 6 November 1985, 22:58 IST, New Delhi. The ascendant is Cancer at 10.13 degrees, so Libra is the 4th house. The birth chart calculator reproduces the positions.

  1. Same sign? Yes, Libra, Venus's own sign. At 2.73 degrees Venus is inside the moolatrikona span the engine uses, Libra 0-15, from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54. The code notes that Saravali gives the first 5 degrees and Bhrigu Sutras the first 20, so this label holds under all three. No Saravali conjunction line applies.
  2. Opposite? Rahu is in Aries, the 10th house. The engine gives every graha a 7th-house aspect, so Venus's aspect from Libra falls on Rahu's sign: the pair and the other node face each other across the 4th-10th axis.
  3. How far apart? 12.37 degrees, Venus in Chitra and Ketu in Swati.
  4. Combust? The Sun, debilitated in Libra, is 17.86 degrees from Venus, outside its 10-degree orb. Not combust.
  5. Malavya? Detected: Venus in moolatrikona in the 4th, a kendra. Ketu beside it does not affect the test.
  6. Dasha rules? Venus is in the 1st from Ketu, so BPHS Ch. 59 Sl. 10-11 is met for Venus's antar dasha in Ketu's period; Venus is also in its own sign, which meets Sl. 7-9. Ketu is in a benefic's sign and a kendra, which meets the Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 conditions for Ketu's own dasha.
  7. Other yogas: Sunapha, Ubhayachari, Pasa and Parivarthana (Mars and Mercury in each other's signs). Ketu takes part in none, and Kaal Sarp is not present.

Read as a whole, the chart shows Venus at full dignity in an angle, a debilitated Sun in the same sign, and Ketu between them in degrees. Every rule the engine applies here comes out of Venus's sign and house; Ketu's presence changes none of the outputs. For the separate placements, read Venus in Libra, Venus in the 4th house and Ketu in the 4th house. The example demonstrates which rules fire; it is not a reading of a person.

How often the pair occurs

Venus and Ketu shared a sign in 247 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.2 per cent, roughly one chart in twelve. Ketu stays about eighteen months in a sign, moving backward, while Venus keeps close to the Sun and so passes through any given sign about once a year. Most years therefore contain some weeks in which births carry the pair. They were within one degree 17 times, and the widest gap inside a sign was 28.66 degrees. Ketu's sign is always opposite Rahu's, so every Venus-Ketu conjunction is also a chart with Venus facing Rahu across the houses. Related pairs: Venus-Rahu, Jupiter-Ketu, Mercury-Ketu and Saturn-Ketu.

What this page does not claim

The corpus gives no general reading of Venus with Ketu, and this page has not invented one. The Karakamsa rule concerns an aspect in a navamsa-based chart; the dasha rules are conditional readings of periods, quoted as the text gives them, and BPHS Ch. 59 opens with propitiations for Ketu's period which this app does not prescribe. The engine computes positions, combustion and the yogas listed and attaches no label or remedy to the conjunction.

How common is the Venus-Ketu conjunction?
In this app's engine, 247 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 8.2 per cent.
What does Saravali say about Venus with Ketu?
Nothing. Its two-planet chapter covers only the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn.
Why do Ketu and Venus matter together in dashas?
In Vimshottari (BPHS Ch. 46 Sl. 12-15) Ketu's 7-year mahadasha is always followed by Venus's 20-year one. With the two conjunct, Venus is in the 1st from Ketu, which meets BPHS Ch. 59 Sl. 10-11 for Venus's antar dasha within Ketu's period.
Does the Lajjit rule apply to this pair?
Only when the conjunction is in the 5th house. BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 11-18 places a graha in Putr Bhava associated with Rahu or Ketu in Lajjit avastha. This app does not compute avasthas.
Is Ketu exalted in a Venus sign?
No. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 exalts Ketu in Scorpio and Sanketnidhi, as Bhrigu Sutras reports, in Sagittarius; neither is ruled by Venus. The engine labels Ketu Neutral everywhere.
Does Ketu cancel Malavya Yoga?
Not in this app. Malavya depends on Venus's sign and kendra placement only; the worked example has both Malavya and Ketu in the same house.
Is there a classical rule pairing Venus and Ketu?
BPHS Ch. 33 Sl. 25-29: Venus aspecting Ketu in the Karakamsa denotes one initiated into a religious order. It concerns an aspect in the Karakamsa, not a birth-chart conjunction.
Can Ketu be combust?
No. The engine tests combustion only for the Moon and the five star-planets. Venus was combust in 41 of the 247 sampled conjunctions.
Does the app suggest a remedy for this conjunction?
No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
