Doshas

Shrapit Dosha is a popular label for Saturn and Rahu in the same sign. This app does not compute it. Here is what BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and a modern case-study book say about the pair, how often it occurs, and a worked chart showing only the positions.

In short

This app does not flag Shrapit Dosha, a name that occurs in none of the searchable texts in its corpus. BPHS reads Saturn and Rahu through conditional dasha rules and says a node gives the results of the graha it joins; one modern book lists Saturn-Rahu among difficult pairings. With no single sourced rule, the app shows the positions and leaves the label alone.

This app does not flag Shrapit Dosha. No calculator returns it and no report lists it. The birth chart calculator shows where Saturn and Rahu are, which is all the popular label is built from, and this page explains why the app stops there: what the label means, what the books in the app's source library say about the pair, how often it occurs, and a worked chart that shows the positions only.

What Shrapit Dosha is in popular usage

In current popular writing, Shrapit Dosha is the name for Saturn and Rahu in the same sign; some versions also count Saturn's aspect on Rahu. The name is built on shaap, the idea BPHS Ch. 83 deals with under the translated title "Effects of Curses in the Previous Birth", and the usual gloss is that the pairing marks a debt carried over from a previous life, felt as delay and obstruction. Writers differ on whether an aspect counts, on whether the degrees must be close, and on whether a strong Saturn changes the reading.

That is popular usage, reported so the reader knows what the name refers to. It is not quoted from any book this app uses, because none of them contains it.

The condition used for this page's numbers

For real figures, the content tooling searched this engine's charts for the simplest common form: Saturn in the same sign as Rahu. That test is used below only for a frequency count and to choose a worked example. The app does not run it on anyone's chart, and it is not offered as the correct definition.

What the classical texts say

A search for "shrapit" and for "shrap" in every searchable astrology text in the corpus, the BPHS translation, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Advanced Predictive Astrology and Daivajna Vallabha, finds nothing. (The two BPHS files in the corpus are the same Santhanam/Sharma translation, so they count as one witness. Jyotisha-Siddhanta-Sara is held only as page images and could not be searched.) The name is later than these books, or at least absent from them.

BPHS: what a node does when it joins a graha

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts both Saturn and Rahu among the malefics, so two malefics in one sign is the starting point. The general rule for the nodes is in Ch. 34, on Yoga Karakas. Sl. 16 says Rahu and Ketu give predominantly the effects of the house lord they are joined with, or of the house they occupy; Sl. 17 says that a node in a kendra, joined with or aspected by the lord of a kona or a kendra, becomes a Yoga Karaka. On this rule Rahu with Saturn should give something of Saturn's results, and in a kendra with Saturn as a kendra or kona lord it can do better than that. BPHS gives no rule that the meeting is a fault in itself.

The editor's introduction to the Bhrigu Sutras (p. 13) records a related belief, that "Rahu acts like Saturn and Ketu acts like Mars". If that is accepted, Saturn with Rahu is two Saturn-like influences together, which is close to the popular intuition. But the editor gives it as a belief, not a rule, and attaches no dosha or reading to the pair.

BPHS: the Saturn-Rahu dasha periods

Where BPHS reads the two grahas together, it does so through dasha periods, and always by condition. Ch. 55 Sl. 21-24 lists favourable results for the Saturn sub-period inside Rahu's Mahadasha if Saturn is in a kendra or kona, exalted, in its own sign or moolatrikona, or in the 3rd or 11th; Sl. 25-26 lists adverse results if Saturn is debilitated, in an enemy sign, or in the 8th or 12th; Sl. 27-29 adds adverse results if Saturn is in the 6th, 8th or 12th from the dasha lord, with a further clause tied to particular house lordships and a prescribed gift. Ch. 57 Sl. 63-70 does the same for the Rahu sub-period inside the Saturn Mahadasha: adverse if Rahu is not in exaltation or another auspicious position (Sl. 63-64); favourable if Rahu is with the ascendant lord or a Yoga Karaka, exalted or in its own sign, or in a kendra or the 11th from the ascendant or the dasha lord (Sl. 65-67), and favourable again in six named signs (Sl. 68); then a lordship clause and a prescribed rite (Sl. 69-70). The text prescribes propitiation; this app does not.

Neither chapter names the Saturn-Rahu combination as a fault. Both make the outcome turn on dignity, house and association, with conditions on each side and no rule for weighing one against another.

BPHS Ch. 83, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras

BPHS Ch. 83, the chapter usually linked with the shaap idea, uses Saturn and Rahu together as one ingredient in a few of its multi-part combinations, for instance Saturn and Rahu occupying a 5th house in a sign of Mercury, with Mercury and Mars in the 12th. Every such combination has other required conditions about the 5th house, the subject of the chapter is want of a son, and every group ends with a prescribed ritual. None makes Saturn with Rahu sufficient on its own, and none calls it a dosha.

Saravali Ch. 15 reads every pair of the seven classical grahas in one house (Sl. 2-22); Rahu and Ketu are not in it, so Saravali has no Saturn-Rahu reading. The Bhrigu Sutras mention Saturn and Rahu together only as companions of another graha, for instance with Mercury in the 6th (Sutras 41-47), where the reading is about health and is not repeated here. The Saturn-Rahu conjunction page treats the pair in full.

Advanced Predictive Astrology

The modern case-study book in the corpus is the one source that is consistently wary of the pair, and it still never uses the name. On p. 25 (Vol. II) it lists Saturn-Rahu among "controversial planetary groups" found in an average horoscope, beside Mars-Saturn, Moon-Ketu, Sun-Venus, Jupiter-Rahu and Saturn-Ketu, and attributes such groups to the previous birth. On p. 114 it gives two bleak readings for Rahu and Saturn together in the ascendant, each with a further condition (an empty 10th; a weak ascendant lord), a relief if the Moon is aspected by benefics, and the converse that a native whose ascendant and Moon are unaspected by Saturn and Rahu "surely prospers". On p. 123 it reports R. Santhanam's list of dasha pairs associated with professional setbacks, which includes Saturn-Rahu and Rahu-Saturn. This page reports those as the book's claims; it does not repeat the book's named public figures or its medical remarks, and the app applies none of them.

Why the app does not compute Shrapit Dosha

Every dosha this app flags rests on a rule it can state, cite and test. For Shrapit Dosha the parts do not make one:

  1. The name occurs in no searchable text in the corpus.
  2. BPHS's general rule for a node joining a graha (Ch. 34 Sl. 16-17) makes the node take on the graha's results and even become a Yoga Karaka in a kendra, which points away from a fixed negative label.
  3. Where BPHS reads the two together, in the dasha chapters, the outcome depends on dignity, house and association, with conditions on both sides.
  4. The one corpus book that is wary of the pair attaches extra conditions of its own (the ascendant, the 10th, the Moon's aspects) and frames much of it as dasha timing. Picking one of those as "the" rule would be the app's invention.

What the app does compute that touches the same placements

  • Positions, houses and dignity for Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, on the birth chart. Rahu and Ketu are the mean nodes, exactly opposite, always shown retrograde, and given no dignity of their own.
  • Saturn's yoga. The yoga check finds Sasa Yoga when Saturn is exalted, moolatrikona or in its own sign in a kendra, and it does not cancel it because Rahu shares the sign.
  • Saturn's aspects. The app's aspect table gives Saturn the 3rd, 7th and 10th; Rahu and Ketu get the 7th only.
  • Saturn's transits. Sade Sati and Ashtama Sani are computed, cited Saturn rules. They concern transiting Saturn and the natal Moon, not natal Saturn with Rahu.
  • The doshas it does flag: Kendradhipathya, Mangal, Kaal Sarp and three Dhan Bhava caution checks. One of those, Mars and Saturn together in the 2nd, is the only Saturn-pair rule in the list, taken from BPHS Ch. 42 with that text's own reversal built in.

How common the popular condition is

The content tooling walks 3,000 birth moments from 1985 to 2060 at New Delhi and counts how many meet the example condition. These are sampled birth moments, not people.

Condition (popular form, not computed by the app)Moments of 3,000
Saturn in the same sign as Rahu (the example condition)201 (6.7%)
Saturn in the same sign as Ketu (not counted above)274
engine-facts.mjs shrapit-dosha and scratchpad facts.mjs, run 2026-10-13. Sidereal (Lahiri), New Delhi.

Roughly one sampled moment in fifteen meets it. Saturn and Rahu are both slow and move in opposite directions through the signs, so their meetings come in runs of months, and everyone born during one shares the pairing. It is a feature of the sky in certain years.

What "together" means here, and what a birth time changes

This app treats two grahas as together when they occupy the same sign, the whole-sign convention its houses and aspects also use; that test needs only longitudes, so it works even without a birth time. For a pair as slow as Saturn and Rahu, that has a consequence worth stating. Whether they share a sign is the same for everyone born on a given day, anywhere in the world, at any hour. What the birth time and place change is only the house the pair falls in and the ascendant it is read from, and those are exactly the things the classical rules above depend on. A label that ignores houses is, in effect, a label for a calendar period.

Within those 201 moments, the shared sign means very different things. The gap between Saturn and Rahu runs from 0.18 to 23.09 degrees, with a quarter within 6.25, half within 11.37 and three quarters within 16.05. Saturn's own condition also varies widely:

Saturn's dignity (engine)Moments
Exalted62

Friendly sign28
Neutral26
Enemy sign62
Combust (any dignity)20
Scratchpad extra.mjs shrapit-dosha, run 2026-10-13, over the 201 sampled moments. No debilitated Saturn occurs among them in this sample.

So 85 of the 201 have Saturn exalted or in its own sign, which BPHS Ch. 55 lists among the favourable conditions for the Saturn-Rahu period, and 62 have it in an enemy sign, which it lists among the adverse ones. A single label for all 201 hides exactly the distinction the text draws.

Worked example: the positions only, 29 March 1990

The first moment in the walk that meets the example condition is 29 March 1990, 03:30 IST, New Delhi. Anyone can enter it in the birth chart calculator and see the same positions. The table shows the positions only; the app attaches no Shrapit verdict to them.

The positions only. engine-facts.mjs shrapit-dosha, run 2026-10-13. Ascendant Capricorn 17.19. Sidereal (Lahiri), whole-sign houses.

What the positions show, read plainly:

  • Saturn and Rahu share Capricorn, 19.68 degrees apart, in the 1st house with Mars and Venus. That is the only reason this chart was picked.
  • Saturn is in its own sign and is the ascendant lord, in a kendra, so the engine finds Sasa Yoga. Mars is exalted in the same house, so it also finds Ruchaka Yoga. Two of the five Panchamahapurusha yogas sit in the very house the popular label would mark down.
  • For a Capricorn ascendant the app's Yoga Karaka table names Venus, which rules the 5th and 10th, and Venus is in the 1st with Rahu. Rahu is therefore in a kendra, joined with the ascendant lord (Saturn) and with a kona-and-kendra lord (Venus). Read literally, that is BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17's condition for a node becoming a Yoga Karaka. The app does not code that sloka, so this is the text's rule, not an engine result.
  • Saturn is not combust; the Sun is in Pisces, outside the 15-degree limit. Saturn's 3rd aspect from the 1st reaches the 3rd house, where the Sun and Mercury are.

The app's own output for this chart: its dosha list returns Kendradhipathya Dosha (Mild) and Mangal Dosha (Mild, Mars in the 1st), with Kaal Sarp absent; its yoga check finds Anapha, Kedara, Argala Raj, Ruchaka, Sasa, Vimala, Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) and Parivarthana. On the dasha side, Rahu's Mahadasha runs from 25 December 2032 to 26 December 2050, with the Saturn sub-period from 31 January 2038 to 7 December 2040; Saturn's Mahadasha runs from 26 December 2066 to 25 December 2085, with the Rahu sub-period from 7 August 2080 to 14 June 2083. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator gives such dates; the app does not apply the BPHS dasha slokas above to them, and this page does not either.

Exceptions the texts themselves state

There is no Shrapit rule, so there is no list of its cancellations. The nearby rules carry their own qualifications:

  • BPHS Ch. 34 Sl. 17: a node in a kendra joined with a kendra or kona lord becomes a Yoga Karaka.
  • BPHS Ch. 55 and Ch. 57: the Saturn-Rahu periods are favourable under stated conditions of dignity and placement, including Rahu with the ascendant lord or a Yoga Karaka.
  • Advanced Predictive Astrology p. 114: its own bleak readings carry a relief when the Moon is aspected by benefics.

What Shrapit Dosha does not tell you

The house view on doshas, set out in Kaal Sarp Dosha explained, is that a named rule describes positions and is not a verdict on a life. For a label with no fixed rule, that applies with more force.

  • It does not describe a debt, a delay or a past life. No text in the corpus attaches those readings to the shared sign alone.
  • It ignores Saturn's strength, which BPHS weighs. An own-sign Saturn in a kendra, as in the example, is a strong Saturn by the engine's rules.
  • It is not one thing. Sites that count Saturn's aspect and sites that do not will disagree on the same chart.
  • It does not time anything. The BPHS readings are about dasha periods, and they are conditional.
  • It is not a reason to buy anything. This app prescribes no rituals, mantras, gemstones or donations.

For the grahas themselves, read Rahu in Vedic astrology and Saturn in Vedic astrology; for the related pair, Saturn-Ketu conjunction. The other popular labels this app does not compute are Pitra Dosha, Guru Chandal Dosha and Grahan Dosha. The word itself is defined in the glossary entry dosha.

Does this app check for Shrapit Dosha?
No. It does not compute or display it anywhere. It shows Saturn's and Rahu's positions so you can see whether they share a sign.
Is Shrapit Dosha in BPHS?
Not by name. Neither "shrapit" nor "shrap" occurs in the BPHS translation this app uses. BPHS reads Saturn and Rahu together through conditional dasha rules (Ch. 55, Ch. 57) and its general rule that a node gives the results of the graha it joins (Ch. 34 Sl. 16-17).
Does Saturn's aspect on Rahu count?
In some popular versions yes, in others no. That disagreement is one reason the app does not pick a rule. The birth chart shows Saturn's aspects (3rd, 7th and 10th) so you can check either version yourself.
Does Saturn with Rahu cancel Sasa Yoga?
Not in this app, and no text cited in the code says it should. In the worked example the engine finds Sasa Yoga on the same Saturn that shares Capricorn with Rahu.
How close do Saturn and Rahu have to be?
No corpus text gives an orb for the pair. In the sample the gap within a shared sign ranges from 0.18 to 23.09 degrees, with a median of 11.37. The birth chart gives both longitudes.
Do I need my birth time to see it?
Not to see whether Saturn and Rahu share a sign; that depends only on the date. You need the time and place for the house they fall in and the ascendant, which is what the BPHS dasha rules and the Yoga Karaka rule actually turn on.
What does "Rahu acts like Saturn" mean?
It is a belief the Bhrigu Sutras' editor records in the book's introduction (p. 13), alongside "Ketu acts like Mars". It is offered as a general characterisation of the nodes, not as a rule about Saturn and Rahu together, and the app does not use it.
Is this related to Sade Sati?
No. Sade Sati is a computed transit window, transiting Saturn against the natal Moon. Shrapit is a popular label for natal Saturn with natal Rahu, which the app does not compute.
Why does another website say I have it?
Because it applies a definition of its own. Compare the positions, which careful calculators should agree on, rather than the label.
Does the app recommend remedies for it?
No. BPHS prescribes rites in several of the passages cited here; this app prescribes no rituals, mantras, gemstones or donations for this or any other result.
