In short
Ketu is the Moon's descending node, always exactly opposite Rahu, so a Sun-Ketu conjunction always puts Rahu in the 7th sign from the Sun. Saravali gives no two-planet line for it; Bhrigu Sutras counts the nodes as enemies of the Sun. The pair shares a sign in 242 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, and this app never marks Ketu combust.
Ketu is the second half of a pair. Wherever Rahu is, Ketu stands exactly opposite, so the question "is the Sun with Ketu?" is also the question "is the Sun facing Rahu across the chart?". On this site the Sun and Ketu form a conjunction, a yuti, when they share a sign of the whole-sign chart; no orb is used. This page covers how the engine places Ketu, what little the corpus says about the pair, how that differs from the Rahu side, and a chart in which the Sun sits with Ketu in its sign of fall. The two separately: the Sun in Vedic astrology and Ketu in Vedic astrology.
Ketu in the engine: a point, not a body
This app computes Ketu in one line. computeChart finds Rahu at the mean lunar node in the sidereal zodiac and adds 180 degrees. Ketu therefore has no motion of its own in the code; it is a mirror of Rahu, always at the same degree in the opposite sign, and always flagged retrograde. Like Rahu, it is missing from the combustion table, so it is never combust, and its dignity is reported as Neutral. Both nodes are among the engine's malefics.
Bhrigu Sutras gives the astronomy that the code follows. The Moon's path crosses the Sun's at two points, exactly 180 degrees apart. Where the Moon crosses going north is Rahu; the other crossing, the descending node, is Ketu. Neither point has substance, and both move backwards. That is why the texts call them chhaya grahas, shadow planets, and why the lunar nodes are always discussed together.
The Sun and Ketu as the texts describe them
BPHS describes Ketu mostly by reference to Rahu. Ch. 3 Sl. 30 says Ketu is akin to Rahu. Sl. 11 lists both nodes among the malefics, with the Sun. Sl. 14-15 places the Sun among the royals and the nodes together as the graha army. A few small differences survive. Sl. 41-44 gives Rahu multi-coloured clothes and Ketu rags. Sl. 47 sorts the grahas into three kinds, Dhatu, Mula and Jiva, and here the two meet from different groups: the Sun is a Mula graha, Ketu a Jiva graha, while Rahu is a Dhatu graha.
The relationship in the corpus is again a story. In Bhrigu Sutras' telling of the churning of the ocean, the asura who drank the nectar was exposed by the Sun and the Moon and cut in two. The body and tail became Ketu. The text says this made both nodes eternal enemies of the two lights. The natural friendship tables in Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 and in this app list only the seven grahas, so the enmity lives in the story rather than in a table the engine reads.
What the classical texts say about the Sun with Ketu
Saravali's conjunction chapters have nothing on Ketu. Ch. 15 covers the twenty-one pairs of the seven grahas, Ch. 16 their triples, Ch. 31 their pairs in the angles, and a search of all three finds no node. BPHS has no conjunction chapter. This page will not supply a reading the corpus does not give.
One passage does name the pair. Bhrigu Sutras, on the Sun in the 5th house, says that the Sun associated with Rahu or Ketu there is linked to loss of children, and that the loss does not follow if a benefic, Jupiter or Venus, aspects the combination. The sutra treats the two nodes as interchangeable, which matches BPHS's "Ketu is akin to Rahu". It is the text's claim about one house, with its own exception.
Notice what this means in practice. Because the nodes are opposite, a chart with the Sun and Ketu in the 5th always has Rahu in the 11th, and one with the Sun and Rahu in the 5th always has Ketu in the 11th. A reader applying the sutra cannot separate the two cases by the Sun's house alone. The Sun-Rahu page covers the other half of that axis, including a modern author's distinction between the Sun and the Moon.
Node pairs: what the engine does and does not do
Three engine behaviours matter for this pair. First, Ketu is never combust. Second, the Sun's flanking yogas, Vesi, Vasi and Ubhayachari, look only at Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn, so Ketu next to the Sun neither helps nor blocks them. Third, the Rahu-Ketu axis is what Kaal Sarp is built on, and the Kaal Sarp calculator reports whether all seven grahas lie on one side of it. A Sun in Ketu's sign is on the axis's end and does not decide the result.
No yoga rule names the Sun with Ketu. The yogas calculator lists what a chart does have, and what a yoga in your chart means explains how to read that list.
Worked example: Sun and Ketu in Libra, 7th house
A fixed search through New Delhi birth moments from 1 January 1985 finds this chart first. Birth: 19 October 1985, 17:44 IST, New Delhi. The birth chart calculator reproduces it. The ascendant is Aries at 2.43 degrees, so under whole-sign houses Libra is the 7th house, and Rahu, in Aries, sits in the 1st.
| Point | Position | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Engine flags |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Libra 2.4 | Chitra (3) | 7 | Debilitated |
| Ketu | Libra 16.06 | Swati (3) | 7 | Neutral; retrograde |
| Mercury | Libra 19.55 | Swati (4) | 7 | Friendly sign; not combust |
| Rahu | Aries 16.06 | Bharani (1) | 1 | Neutral; retrograde |
- Same sign? Yes, Libra, the 7th house. No Saravali line covers the pair.
- How far apart? 13.66 degrees: the Sun at the very start of Libra, Ketu in its middle.
- The Sun's dignity: debilitated. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 makes Libra the Sun's sign of fall, deepest at 10 degrees, and at 2.4 the Sun is in it. Ketu's presence does not change that label.
- Combust? Not applicable to Ketu. Mercury, also in Libra, is about 17 degrees from the Sun and outside its 14-degree limit, so it is not combust either.
- The axis: Rahu at Aries 16.06 in the 1st, Ketu at Libra 16.06 in the 7th. Run on this chart, computeKaalSarp reports Kaal Sarp not present: the grahas are not all on one side of that line.
- Yogas: Durudhura, Ubhayachari, Pasa, Sarala, Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona) and Parivarthana. The Ubhayachari comes from Saturn in Scorpio on one side of the Sun and Mars and Venus in Virgo on the other. The Parivarthana is Mercury in Libra and Venus in Virgo, each in the other's sign. Ketu plays no part in any of them.
The chart pairs the Sun at its weakest sign with a node, in the house of partnership, and opposite Rahu on the ascendant. That is a description of positions, not of a person. For more, see the Sun in Libra, the Sun in the 7th house and Ketu in the 7th house.
Reading the example with the texts that do apply
Because Saravali is silent on Ketu, the classical lines that bear on this chart come from its other grahas. Mercury shares Libra with the Sun, so Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 4, the Sun-Mercury line, applies: service, sweet speech, learning, with wealth that is unsteady. That line is about the Sun and Mercury, and Ketu adds nothing to it in the text. A reader who wants a classical sentence about this sign therefore gets one, but not one about the node.
BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 8-10 offers a second frame, the avasthas. A graha joined with a malefic is Vikal, and BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts Ketu a malefic, so by that rule this Sun is Vikal. The same list calls a graha in an enemy's sign Duhkhit, and Libra is ruled by Venus, whom Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 names as the Sun's enemy. The text says the house the graha occupies takes on the matching effect, here the 7th. This app's birth chart does not compute these avasthas; they are given as the text's scheme.
There is also a question the engine leaves alone. Some readers look for a cancellation of debilitation when a graha is in its sign of fall, using the rules glossed under neecha bhanga. This app does not compute neecha bhanga, so the Sun here is simply labelled Debilitated, and the label does not change because Ketu or Mercury is present. The Sun's strength figures are in the Shad Bala calculator for anyone who wants to see the numbers behind the label.
How often the pair occurs
Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, the Sun and Ketu shared a sign 242 times, or 8.1 per cent, almost the same rate as the Sun with Rahu. In 132 of them they were within 10 degrees; the widest same-sign gap was 27.78 degrees.
On a calendar the pair comes in windows. A scratch walk through the engine, one chart a day at noon for 1985-1994, found ten stretches with the Sun in Ketu's sign. Nine lasted 30 or 31 days. One, starting 15 May 1994, lasted only 4 days, because the node changed sign while the Sun was there. Each window falls about a month earlier in the year than the one before, every year and a half or so, as Ketu moves backwards.
| Window began | Days | Sign |
|---|---|---|
| 17 October 1985 | 30 | Libra |
| 17 September 1986 | 31 | Virgo |
| 17 September 1987 | 31 | Virgo |
| 17 August 1988 | 31 | Leo |
| 17 August 1989 | 31 | Leo |
| 17 July 1990 | 31 | Cancer |
Compare the Sun-Rahu windows over the same years: they ran from April 1985 backwards through the calendar, about six months apart from these, as an opposite point must. In the Vimshottari scheme Ketu's Mahadasha is 7 years and the Sun's 6; see the Ketu Mahadasha and the Sun Mahadasha. Neighbouring pairs: Sun-Saturn and Moon-Ketu.
What this page does not claim
The corpus gives this pair a myth and one house-specific sutra; the page reports both as such and does not stretch them into a general reading. This app attaches no score, yoga or remedy to the Sun with Ketu, and its node positions are mean-node positions, which can differ by a little from software that uses the true node. Near a sign boundary that small difference can decide whether the pair exists at all.
- Where is Rahu when the Sun is with Ketu?
- Always in the 7th sign from the Sun, at exactly the same degree as Ketu, because the engine places Ketu 180 degrees from Rahu.
- Does Saravali describe the Sun with Ketu?
- No. Saravali's two-planet, three-planet and angle chapters cover only the seven grahas.
- Can Ketu be combust in this app?
- No. The nodes are not in the combustion table, so the flag is never set for them.
- How is Ketu different from Rahu in the texts?
- BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 30 calls Ketu akin to Rahu. Small differences remain: Rahu is a Dhatu graha and Ketu a Jiva graha (Sl. 47), and Rahu denotes multi-coloured clothes, Ketu rags (Sl. 41-44).
- How common is the Sun-Ketu conjunction?
- In 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 it occurred 242 times, or 8.1 per cent, in windows of about a month each year.
- Does any classical text give a result for the Sun with Ketu?
- Only Bhrigu Sutras, and only for the 5th house: it links the Sun with Rahu or Ketu there to loss of children, and says this does not follow if Jupiter or Venus aspects the pair. It is reported here as the text's claim.
- Does Ketu change the Sun's dignity or strength in this app?
- No. The Sun's dignity label depends on its sign alone, and the engine does not adjust it for a node in the same sign. Ketu itself is labelled Neutral.
- Does the app suggest remedies for Ketu with the Sun?
- No. It prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
