Conjunctions

The Moon and Saturn in one sign: what Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 12 says, why Saturn counts the Moon an enemy, why this pair always rules out Kemadruma in this app, and a chart with four grahas in Sagittarius.

In short

The Moon and Saturn share a sign in about 8 per cent of sampled birth moments. Saravali reads the pair harshly, and this page reports that reading as the text's claim rather than a verdict. In this app the pair has one firm mechanical effect: with Saturn beside the Moon, the engine can never flag Kemadruma.

The Moon is the fastest graha in the chart and Saturn the slowest. When they occupy the same sign, this app calls it a yuti, or conjunction. The charts here use whole-sign houses, so "conjunct" means one sign, one house, and nothing more: the engine applies no orb. How many degrees separate the two is shown below as extra information, because it matters for combustion, not for the conjunction itself. For each graha on its own, see the Moon in Vedic astrology and Saturn in Vedic astrology.

The Moon and Saturn as the texts describe them

BPHS Ch. 3 gives the two grahas opposite jobs. Sl. 12-13 make Candr the mind and Sani grief. Sl. 14-15 seat the Moon among the royal grahas and Saturn as the servant of the cabinet. Sl. 33 assigns each graha a span of time, and the pair again sits at the two ends: the Moon rules a muhurta-scale unit while Saturn takes the year. Sl. 11 classes Saturn as a malefic in every case and the Moon as one only when she is decreasing, in the dark half of the month.

The friendship between them is one-sided. In this app's table of natural relationships (Kannan's Table B, coded as NATURAL_RELATIONS in the kundali engine), the Moon has no enemies at all, while Saturn lists the Sun, the Moon and Mars as enemies. Bhrigu Sutras (Part I, the Saturn section) states the same three enemies for Saturn. So the Moon treats Saturn as neutral and Saturn treats the Moon as an enemy. The engine uses that table when it grades the dignity of a graha in another's sign; it does not use it to score the conjunction.

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 adds a second, chart-specific layer, the temporary relationship. Grahas in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from each other become temporary friends; "there is enmity otherwise". The same sign is not on the friendly list, so two grahas sharing a sign are temporary enemies by this rule, whoever they are. For the Moon and Saturn that stacks on top of Saturn's natural enmity.

What the classical texts say about the Moon with Saturn

Saravali Ch. 15 is the corpus's chapter on two planets "in one House". Sl. 1 credits the readings to the Vriddha Yavanas. Sl. 12 is the Moon-Saturn yoga, and it is one of the bleakest lines in the chapter. As this translation renders it, the native will have an aged wife, be dear to the public, breed elephants and horses, lack virtues, be under the control of others, and lack wealth. It closes with the word "defeated".

This page reports that line because it is the classical text on the pair, not because it describes anyone. Two features of the sloka limit how far it can be taken. It sets no condition: no sign, no house, no distance. And it is a single sentence covering about one chart in twelve in this app's sample. Even inside the line the picture is mixed, since "dear to public" sits beside the harsher items.

Saravali itself qualifies the whole chapter. Sl. 23, the last of Ch. 15, says the stated results are likely to increase or decrease according to the good or bad vargas the two planets occupy. In other words the text does not treat its own one-line readings as fixed. A different chapter, Ch. 4 Sl. 40, lists a planet "conjunct with the Moon" among the planets capable of conferring happiness. That line is general and is not about Saturn in particular, but it shows the same book reading conjunction with the Moon as a source of strength in another context.

BPHS has no chapter on two-planet conjunctions and no named yoga for Candr with Sani. Where the pair enters BPHS at all, it does so through general rules: the malefic classification above, the relationships, and the strength chapters.

Not a prediction

Saravali Sl. 12 is quoted as what the text claims. This app does not attach that reading, or any score penalty, to the conjunction. Nothing on this page says what will happen to a reader with this placement.

Yogas this pair can be part of

There is no rule in this app's yoga detector named for the Moon and Saturn. The pair does, however, change the outcome of the lunar yogas, because those are defined by where the five grahas Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn stand from the Moon (Saravali Ch. 13, coded in detectLunarYogas). The yogas calculator lists what fires in a given chart.

  • Kemadruma cannot fire. The engine flags Kemadruma only when no graha from that list stands in a kendra from the Moon, and the kendras counted are the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th signs from her. The 1st sign from the Moon is her own sign. With Saturn in it, the condition fails. In a sample of 20,000 random birth moments 1950-2050, Kemadruma fired 0 times among the 1,639 Moon-Saturn charts.
  • Saturn cannot cause Sunapha or Anapha in this chart. Those need a graha in the 2nd or 12th sign from the Moon, and Saturn is in the 1st. Another graha can still form them.
  • Lordship yogas. Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius and the Moon rules Cancer, so in some ascendants the two are the lords of a kendra and a trikona together, and their conjunction then counts as the link in the Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga rule. Whether that applies depends entirely on the rising sign.

A name sometimes heard for this pair, "Vish Yoga", does not appear anywhere in this corpus, and the engine has no rule for it. The page therefore says nothing more about it.

Saturn on the Moon and the Sade Sati rule

This conjunction has a link to Saturn's transits that no other pair has. The engine's Sade Sati rule (computeSadeSati) looks at the transiting Saturn's sign counted from the natal Moon's sign. The 12th is the rising phase, the 1st the peak phase, the 2nd the setting phase. At the moment of birth, transiting Saturn is natal Saturn. So a chart with the Moon and Saturn in one sign was, by the engine's rule, born inside the peak phase of a Sade Sati.

That is a fact about the birth date, not a forecast. The phase running at birth ends when Saturn leaves the sign, and the dates of that exit, for any sign, are listed on the Saturn transit pages such as Saturn transit in Sagittarius. The Sade Sati page covers the rule and its classical background.

Combustion when the Sun is nearby

The engine flags combustion for each graha separately, by the shortest arc to the sidereal Sun. The Moon is combust within 12 degrees and Saturn within 15. Those limits are the same whether or not the two are together, so the conjunction does not cause combustion. It just means that when the Sun joins the sign as well, both can be caught at once. In the sample the Moon was combust in 125 of the 1,639 sampled Moon-Saturn charts and Saturn in 153.

A combust Moon has a second meaning. Within 12 degrees of the Sun, the Moon is close to new moon, the Amavasya end of the month, which is also where BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts her as malefic if she is decreasing. The moon phase calculator shows the phase for any date.

Worked example: Moon and Saturn in Sagittarius, 2nd house

A fixed search through birth moments at New Delhi, stepping forward from 1 January 1985, returns this chart as the first with the Moon and Saturn in one sign. Birth: 21 December 1987, 05:23 IST, New Delhi. Entered in the birth chart calculator, it gives Scorpio rising at 10.68 degrees, so with whole-sign houses Sagittarius is the 2nd house.

  1. Same sign? Yes. The Moon and Saturn are both in Sagittarius, so the engine treats them as conjunct and Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 12 applies as written.
  2. How far apart? 7.55 degrees, Saturn at the very start of the sign and the Moon a few degrees on, all four grahas inside the same nakshatra, Mula.
  3. Combust? Yes, both. The Sun at 4.88 is 3.13 degrees behind the Moon (limit 12) and 4.42 degrees ahead of Saturn (limit 15). Mercury is combust too. The Moon just past the Sun means this is a birth in the first tithi after new moon.
  4. Kemadruma? Ruled out, as it always is with Saturn beside the Moon.
  5. Sade Sati at birth? By the engine's rule, peak phase: transiting Saturn was in the natal Moon's sign.
  6. Yogas detected: Sunapha Yoga, Vesi Yoga, Kedara Yoga, Argala Raj Yoga, Harsha Yoga and Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona). Sunapha comes from Venus in Capricorn, the 2nd sign from the Moon, and Vesi from the same Venus as the 2nd from the Sun. The Kendra-Kona entry does involve the pair: with Scorpio rising, Saturn rules Aquarius, the 4th (a kendra), and the Moon rules Cancer, the 9th (a trikona), and the two sit together. The engine lists Saturn, the Moon and the Sun in that yoga.

Four grahas in one house raises a classical point the engine does not compute. BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 1-3 reads four or more strong grahas in one bhava as an ascetic combination, and Sl. 4 says that grahas obscured by the Sun's rays do not carry it. Here three of the four are combust, which on the text's own terms weakens the case. This app does not test for that combination at all, so it is mentioned only as a reading of the source. For the house side see the Moon in the 2nd house and Saturn in the 2nd house; for the sign, the Moon in Sagittarius.

How often the pair occurs

Of 20,000 random birth moments 1950-2050 (times drawn uniformly at random with a fixed seed, New Delhi, run through the engine from a scratch script), the Moon and Saturn shared a sign in 1,639, or 8.2 per cent. A random sample is used because the fast Moon needs one; a sample stepped every nine days would land her in a sign pattern rather than at random. That is close to one in twelve, which fits the motions given in the BPHS Ch. 3 commentary: the Moon covers 13-15 degrees a day and Saturn about 2 minutes of arc, so the Moon runs through Saturn's sign in two or three days each month. Inside the 1,639, the average gap was 10.16 degrees, 499 were within 5 degrees and 108 within 1 degree. Saturn was retrograde in 594 of them, which reflects how much of the year Saturn spends in retrograde motion rather than anything about the Moon.

Timing in this app comes from the dashas, and each graha runs its own: Saturn 19 years and the Moon 10 in the Vimshottari scheme. See the Saturn Mahadasha and the Moon Mahadasha. Pairs that share one of these grahas: Moon-Mars, Moon-Jupiter, Moon-Rahu, Mars-Saturn and Sun-Saturn.

How common is the Moon-Saturn conjunction?
In this app's engine the two shared a sign in 1,639 of 20,000 random birth moments 1950-2050 sampled at random, or 8.2 per cent.
What does Saravali say about the Moon with Saturn?
Ch. 15 Sl. 12 gives a harsh one-line reading, including dependence on others and lack of wealth, alongside being dear to the public. Sl. 23 of the same chapter says such results rise or fall with the vargas the planets occupy. This page reports it as the text's claim, not a prediction.
Can a chart with the Moon and Saturn together have Kemadruma?
Not in this app. The engine flags Kemadruma only when no graha from Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn is in a kendra from the Moon, and the Moon's own sign counts as the 1st kendra. In a random sample of 20,000 birth moments, 0 of the 1,639 Moon-Saturn charts had it.
Was I born during Sade Sati if my Moon and Saturn are together?
By the engine's rule, yes: Saturn in the natal Moon's sign is the peak phase, and at birth transiting Saturn is natal Saturn. It describes the birth date only.
Is "Vish Yoga" detected here?
No. The name does not occur in the corpus this site uses, and the engine has no rule for it.
Are the Moon and Saturn friends?
Not mutually. In the table the engine uses, the Moon has no enemies and so treats Saturn as neutral, while Saturn counts the Moon as an enemy. Bhrigu Sutras gives Saturn the same enemies.
Does the app suggest a remedy for this conjunction?
No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
