The Moon and Mars in one sign: what Saravali Ch. 15 and Ch. 31 say, where the name Chandra-Mangala Yoga comes from and why this app does not compute it, how the Moon's dignity can turn "enemy" here, and a worked chart.

In short

The Moon and Mars share a sign in about 8 per cent of birth moments (1,640 of 20,000 random moments 1950-2050). Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 8 reads the pair as valour and craft: a fighter, an artisan, a worker in metal and clay. The popular name Chandra-Mangala Yoga appears only in a modern book in this corpus, and this app does not detect it.

The Moon is the fastest graha and Mars one of the slower ones, so a Moon-Mars conjunction is a brief, recurring meeting: each time the Moon's monthly circuit carries it into the sign where Mars is, the two share a house for a short stretch. On this site that counts as a yuti, two grahas in one sign of the whole-sign chart, with no orb. This page covers how the texts pair the mind with strength, Saravali's readings, the modern name the pair carries and its status in this app, and one chart worked through. For each graha alone, see the Moon in Vedic astrology and Mars in Vedic astrology.

The Moon and Mars as the texts describe them

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 assigns each graha a governance: the Moon is the mind, Mars is one's strength. Put together, the pair is the mind joined to force, and much of what the texts say follows from that. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 9 counts Mars a natural malefic and the Moon a benefic only while waxing, so the nature of the pair shifts with the Moon's phase. A bright Moon with Mars is a benefic beside a malefic; a dark Moon with Mars is two malefics.

On natural friendship the relation is one-sided. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 lists the Moon among Mars's friends, but the Moon's friends are only the Sun and Mercury. The Moon has no enemies, so Mars is neutral to it. Mars likes the Moon; the Moon is merely civil to Mars.

That asymmetry has a visible effect in this app. The engine's dignity label uses the compound relation, natural plus temporary. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 makes a graha in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th from another its temporary friend, and any other position, the same sign included, a temporary enmity. So a Moon in Aries or Scorpio with Mars there combines natural neutrality with temporary enmity, and the engine labels it Enemy sign. The worked example shows exactly this.

What the classical texts say about the Moon with Mars

Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 8 is the Moon-Mars line. In this translation the native will be valorous, brave in war, a boxer, and will make articles of mud, skin and minerals; an artisan and a metallurgist. The sloka also mentions bloody imbalances or diseases, which this page reports only as the text's association, not medical advice. It is a working person's reading. Where the Sun-Mars line is about splendour and fierceness, this one is about hands, materials and physical courage.

Saravali Ch. 31 Sl. 26-29 read the pair in the angles. In the ascendant the text pairs a harsh temperament with wealth fit for a king, alongside health claims not repeated here. In the 4th it is unkind: grief and want of comfort, wealth and kin. In the 7th it gives a covetous, talkative and jealous nature. The 10th is the generous one: the wealth of an army of horses, elephants and men, and bravery. Ch. 15 Sl. 23 still applies: all of these rise or fall with the vargas the two occupy.

A different chapter of Saravali puts the Moon's company in a more general light. Ch. 5 Sl. 40, on auspicious planets, says a planet with clear rays, or one conjunct the Moon, or one that has won a planetary war, can bestow complete happiness and a kingdom that cannot be taken away. The line is not specific to Mars, but it means Saravali counts being with the Moon as a source of strength for the other graha.

The 9th house, and the avastha frame

Saravali Ch. 32, on the 9th house, has its own line for Mars joining the Moon there. It grants wealth, and sets beside it claims about the mother and the body that this page does not repeat. As with the angle lines, the house turns a mixed pair one way or the other. For the house, see the 9th house.

BPHS Ch. 45 Sl. 8-10 gives a classification rather than a result. A graha joined with a malefic is in the Vikal state, and Mars is a natural malefic, so by that rule a Moon with Mars is Vikal however far apart they sit in the sign. The text says the house the graha occupies then takes on the matching effect. This app's birth chart does not compute these avasthas; they are reported as the text's scheme, which a reader may set beside Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 40, where being with the Moon is a strength for the other graha. The two texts look at the same meeting from opposite sides: BPHS from the Moon's, Saravali from Mars's.

When a third graha joins

Saravali Ch. 16 has five lines for the Moon and Mars with a third graha. Most are severe. With Mercury (Sl. 16) the text speaks of mean habits and a life without friends. With Venus (Sl. 18) and with Saturn (Sl. 19) it is similarly harsh. With Jupiter (Sl. 17) it gives splendour and the affection of women alongside anger and worse. With the Sun (Sl. 1) it gives bravery, mechanical knowledge and skill in any work. These are quoted in summary as the text's claims.

Chandra-Mangala Yoga: where the name comes from

Many readers know this pair as Chandra-Mangala Yoga. The name does not occur in BPHS, Saravali or Bhrigu Sutras as they appear in this corpus. It occurs in Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (pp. 149-150), a modern book. There the author notes that Varaha Mihira and others viewed the combination as a bad one, calls it partly true that it is good for earning money by improper means, and then describes Chandra-Mangala Yoga as an important combination for material prosperity.

The same pages add a set of qualifiers. Jupiter's aspect or company is said to bring wealth and good morale, and without it the author doubts the native will have peace of mind despite affluence. The book reports "a general consideration among astrologers" that the yoga shows its results in the Moon and Mars dashas. It then offers two historical charts in which those dashas ran out in childhood, and the rise came instead in the dasha of Saturn. The author's own examples, in other words, cut against the generalisation he reports.

Does this app detect Chandra-Mangala Yoga?

No. The engine's yoga detector has no rule by that name or for the Moon with Mars, and the name appears nowhere in the server code. The yogas it does detect are listed by the yogas calculator and explained in what a yoga in your chart means.

Yogas this pair can be part of

Mars with the Moon has a definite effect on the Moon-based yogas, by the rules alone. Sunapha, Anapha and Durudhura need Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus or Saturn in the sign after or before the Moon. A Mars in the Moon's own sign is in neither, so it cannot supply them. On the other hand, Kemadruma requires none of those five in an angle from the Moon, and the Moon's own sign counts as the first angle. A Mars beside the Moon therefore rules Kemadruma out, whatever else the chart holds.

A Mars in its own sign or exaltation in an angle from the lagna also gives Ruchaka Yoga; the Moon's presence is irrelevant to that rule. There is no planetary war in this pair: BPHS Ch. 79 Sl. 9 defines graha yuddha only among the five starry grahas, and the Moon is not one of them.

Worked example: Moon and Mars in Aries, 3rd house

A fixed search through New Delhi birth moments stops at this chart first. Birth: 24 March 1985, 05:33 IST, New Delhi. The birth chart calculator gives the same positions. The ascendant is Aquarius at 21.28 degrees, so under whole-sign houses Aries is the 3rd house.

engine-facts.mjs moon-mars-conjunction, run 2026-10-14.
  1. Same sign? Yes, Aries, the 3rd house. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 8 applies. The 3rd is not an angle, so Ch. 31 adds nothing.
  2. How far apart? 5.92 degrees, both in Ashwini, in neighbouring padas.
  3. The Moon's phase: the app's lunarDay function gives tithi 3 of Shukla Paksha, the Moon 27.15 degrees ahead of the Sun, a waxing crescent 5.5 per cent lit. It is a young, thin Moon, but a waxing one.
  4. Dignity: Mars is in its own sign. The Moon is labelled Enemy sign, for the reason given above: Mars is neutral to the Moon by nature and a temporary enemy because it shares the sign.
  5. Combust? Neither. The Moon is 27 degrees from the Sun (limit 12); Mars, in Aries, is well over 17 degrees from the Sun in Pisces.
  6. Yogas: Anapha (Mercury and Venus in Pisces, the 12th from the Moon), Vesi (Mars in the 2nd sign from the Sun), Kedara, Argala Raj Yoga, Raja Yoga and Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona). The Raja Yoga is from Mercury and Venus, lords of the 5th and 9th, together in Pisces. Mars here forms Vesi for the Sun, but cannot form any lunar yoga for the Moon it sits with.

Rahu is in Aries too, so the APA author's remark that node association can turn the yoga towards wrong acts would, by his reading, be relevant here. That is a modern author's view, and this app does not apply it. For the sign and house, see Mars in Aries, the Moon in Aries and Mars in the 3rd house. None of this is a forecast about anyone born at that moment.

How often the pair occurs

The site's standard 3,000-moment sample steps about nine days at a time, which carries the Moon several signs per step, so it is not used for the Moon's pairs. This page instead draws 20,000 instants at random (with a fixed seed) between 1950 and 2050 and runs each through computeChart for New Delhi. In that sample the Moon and Mars shared a sign 1,640 times, or 8.2 per cent, close to one in twelve. In 933 of those the two were within 10 degrees; the widest same-sign gap was 29.36 degrees. Mars was retrograde in 155 of them.

In the Vimshottari scheme the Moon's Mahadasha is 10 years and Mars's 7. See the Moon Mahadasha and the Mars Mahadasha. Neighbouring pairs: Sun-Mars, Moon-Jupiter and Mars-Saturn.

What this page does not claim

Saravali's lines and the modern book's views are reported as what those texts say about a placement found in roughly one birth moment in twelve. Neither is a description of a reader. This app adds no score, yoga or remedy for the pair; what it does compute, the Moon's compound dignity and the lunar yogas the pair rules in or out, follows stated rules that anyone can check against the worked example.

Is Chandra-Mangala Yoga a classical yoga?
Not in this corpus. The name is absent from BPHS, Saravali and Bhrigu Sutras and appears in Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (pp. 149-150). This app does not detect it.
What does Saravali say about the Moon with Mars?
Ch. 15 Sl. 8: valorous, brave in war, a boxer, an artisan and metallurgist who makes articles of mud, skin and minerals. Ch. 31 Sl. 26-29 read the pair in each angle, most favourably in the 10th.
Why does the app say the Moon is in an enemy sign in the example?
The label is the compound relation. Mars is neutral to the Moon by nature, and BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 makes a graha in the same sign a temporary enemy, so the combined result is enmity.
Can a Moon-Mars conjunction give Kemadruma?
No. Kemadruma needs no tara graha in an angle from the Moon, and Mars in the Moon's own sign is in the first angle.
How common is the pair?
In 20,000 random birth moments 1950-2050, run through this app's engine, 1,640 times, or 8.2 per cent.
Does the app suggest remedies for this pair?
No. It prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
