Mars and Jupiter in one sign: Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 14, why they are natural friends, how Capricorn and Cancer put one exalted beside the other fallen, why Mars does not count for Gaj Kesari, and a worked chart.

In short

Mars and Jupiter share a sign in about 8 per cent of sampled charts, and they are natural friends in both the classical texts and the app's table. Saravali reads the pair as learning, skill in speech and craft, and a liking for weapons. The app has no yoga for the pair itself, and Mars does not count as the benefic that Gaj Kesari needs.

Most pairs on this site come with a friendship problem. Mars and Jupiter do not: they are friends in every source the app uses. When they share a sign, the app records a yuti. A conjunction here means the same whole sign and nothing finer; the engine sets no orb. The separation in degrees still matters for two rules discussed below. For each graha on its own, read Mars in Vedic astrology and Jupiter in Vedic astrology.

Mars and Jupiter as the texts describe them

BPHS Ch. 3 makes them complementary officers. In Sl. 14-15 Mars is the chief of the army and Jupiter one of the two ministers. Sl. 12-13 give Mars a person's strength and Jupiter knowledge and happiness. Sl. 20 assigns them neighbouring elements, fire to Mars and space to Jupiter. Both are male (Sl. 19). Sl. 11 divides them, though: Mars is a malefic and Jupiter a benefic.

On natural friendship the sources agree completely. Bhrigu Sutras (Part I) lists Jupiter among the friends of Mars and Mars among the friends of Jupiter. The table the engine uses, Kannan's, has the same: each names the other in its friends list. That is rarer than it sounds. Mars counts Mercury an enemy and is only neutral to Venus and Saturn; Jupiter counts Mercury and Venus as enemies. Of the grahas Mars can meet, only the Sun, the Moon and Jupiter return its friendship.

Friends, but not in each other's signs

The friendship does not survive the conjunction where dignity is concerned. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56 makes two grahas in the same sign temporary enemies, and Sl. 57-58 combine the two layers: friendship on one count and enmity on the other "turns into equality". So when Mars sits in Sagittarius or Pisces with Jupiter, the engine grades it in a neutral sign, not a friendly one, and Jupiter in Aries or Scorpio with Mars is graded neutral too. A scratch run over the 3,000-moment sample confirms that every such chart gets the "Neutral" label.

Capricorn and Cancer: one high, one low

BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 gives Mars its exaltation in Capricorn (deepest at 28 degrees) and Jupiter its exaltation in Cancer (deepest at 5), each falling in the seventh sign from its exaltation. The two schemes cross. In Capricorn, Mars is exalted and Jupiter debilitated; in Cancer, Jupiter is exalted and Mars debilitated. A Mars-Jupiter conjunction in either sign therefore always holds one graha at its strongest and the other at its weakest, by the engine's own dignity labels.

The bottom row matters for most charts. In the other six signs the label for each graha depends on the natural relation with the sign's lord combined with where that lord sits, so the same pair can be "Friendly" in one chart and "Enemy sign" in another. The sign pages, for instance Mars in Capricorn and Jupiter in Capricorn, give the full dignity ranges by degree.

What the classical texts say about Mars with Jupiter

Saravali Ch. 15, which collects the Vriddha Yavanas' readings of two planets in one house, gives this pair Sl. 14. In this translation, a native with Mars and Jupiter together at birth will be an artisan, a Vedic expert, intelligent, expert in speech, wise, and fond of using weapons.

Unlike several of its neighbours in the chapter, this sloka contains nothing harsh. It sets the two grahas' themes side by side: learning, intelligence and speech for Jupiter, craft and weapons for Mars. As with every sloka here it has no condition attached; the final Sl. 23 says the results increase or decrease with the good or bad vargas the two occupy.

BPHS has no chapter on two-planet conjunctions and no yoga named for Mangal with Guru. It speaks to the pair only through its general rules on friendship, dignity and planetary war.

A text, not a forecast

Saravali Sl. 14 is reported as the text's reading. This app does not attach it, or any score, to the conjunction.

Yogas this pair can be part of

The yoga detector has no rule for Mars with Jupiter. Three of its rules come close enough to the pair to need a word, and the yogas calculator shows which fire in a chart.

  • Gaj Kesari. The engine's rule (BPHS Ch. 36 Sl. 3-4) needs Jupiter in a kendra from the ascendant or the Moon, joined with or aspected by a benefic, and not debilitated, combust or in an enemy sign. The benefics it accepts are Venus, Mercury and the Moon. Mars is not one, so Mars beside Jupiter never supplies the support the rule needs. It does not block it either.
  • Panchamahapurusha. Ruchaka (Mars) and Hamsa (Jupiter) each need their graha in its own or exaltation sign in a kendra. In Capricorn or Cancer only one of the two can qualify, since the other is debilitated there. In Sagittarius or Pisces only Jupiter can; in Aries or Scorpio only Mars.
  • Lordship yogas. For some ascendants Mars rules a kendra and Jupiter a trikona, or the other way round, and the conjunction is the link the Kendra-Kona Raj Yoga rule needs. Whether that happens depends on the rising sign.

Planetary war and combustion

Both grahas are on BPHS's list for planetary war. Ch. 79 Sl. 9 says a war happens when they are within one degree, and that the one to the north wins; Ch. 27 Sl. 20 moves the difference in Shad Bala from the loser to the winner. The app does not compute this. There is no war rule in the server code, and the engine does not calculate the north-south positions the sloka uses to name a winner. In the sample only 16 of the 239 Mars-Jupiter charts had the two within a degree.

The engine does test combustion, separately for each: Mars within 17 degrees of the Sun, Jupiter within 11. In the sample Mars was combust in 48 of the 239 conjunctions, Jupiter in 34, both in 26. A combust graha loses its positional strength in Shad Bala, and a combust Jupiter also fails the Gaj Kesari rule. Mars was retrograde in 7 of the 239 and Jupiter in 18.

Worked example: Mars and Jupiter in Aquarius, 1st house

A fixed search of New Delhi birth moments, starting on 1 January 1985, first finds the pair on 24 November 1986 at 12:52 IST. The birth chart calculator gives Aquarius rising at 9.3 degrees, and both grahas are in Aquarius, so with whole-sign houses the conjunction is in the 1st house, the ascendant itself.

  1. Same sign? Yes, Aquarius. Saravali Ch. 15 Sl. 14 applies as written.
  2. How far apart? 14.71 degrees, Mars in Dhanishta and Jupiter in Shatabhisha. Nowhere near a war.
  3. Dignity? Both "Friendly sign". Aquarius belongs to Saturn, who sits in Scorpio, the 10th from Aquarius, which makes Saturn a temporary friend; the compound result comes out friendly for both.
  4. Gaj Kesari? Fires, with Jupiter and the Moon listed. Jupiter is in the 1st house, a kendra; the Moon in Leo, the 7th, aspects it and supplies the benefic support. Mars, beside Jupiter, plays no part.
  5. Parivarthana? Fires for Mars and Saturn: Mars is in Saturn's sign and Saturn in Mars's sign, Scorpio. That is about Mars, but not about the conjunction.
  6. Ruchaka or Hamsa? Neither. Both grahas are in a kendra, but Aquarius is neither one's own nor exaltation sign.
  7. Other yogas detected: Vasi Yoga, Kedara Yoga, Raja Yoga and Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona). The Raja Yoga lists Mercury and Venus, the lords of the 5th (Gemini) and 9th (Libra), together in Libra.
  8. Mangal Dosha? A scratch run of the dosha checks flags it as mild, because Mars is in the 1st house. Jupiter beside Mars does not change that verdict; the engine's rule reads Mars's house only.

So in this chart the friendly pair sits on the ascendant, Jupiter takes part in a yoga through the Moon, and Mars through an exchange with Saturn, while nothing the engine reports is a Mars-Jupiter rule. See Jupiter in the 1st house, Mars in the 1st house and what Mangal Dosha is and is not.

Limits of this reading

A friendly pair invites a friendly story, and the texts give one: Saravali's line for this pair is among the kindest in its chapter. But the engine has no rule that rewards the friendship, and three of the things that do change its output, dignity, combustion and the Gaj Kesari conditions, can all work against the pair in a given chart. A Mars-Jupiter conjunction in Cancer has a debilitated Mars; one within 11 degrees of the Sun has a combust Jupiter that cannot form Gaj Kesari. The page reports those mechanics and the text's reading side by side and does not merge them into a verdict about anyone born with the pair.

How often the pair occurs

Of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mars and Jupiter shared a sign in 239, or 8.0 per cent. The mean separation was 10.46 degrees, with 74 within 5 degrees. Each graha runs its own dasha: the Mars Mahadasha lasts 7 years and the Jupiter Mahadasha 16. Neighbouring pairs: Moon-Jupiter, Mars-Saturn, Mars-Venus and Mercury-Jupiter.

How common is the Mars-Jupiter conjunction?
In this app's engine the two shared a sign in 239 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, or 8.0 per cent.
Are Mars and Jupiter friends?
Yes, naturally and mutually, in Bhrigu Sutras and in the table the engine uses. In each other's signs, though, the temporary enmity of sharing a sign brings the engine's label down to Neutral.
What does Saravali say about Mars with Jupiter?
Ch. 15 Sl. 14: an artisan, a Vedic expert, intelligent, expert in speech, wise and fond of using weapons.
Does Mars with Jupiter create Gaj Kesari Yoga?
Not by itself. The engine's rule needs a benefic (Venus, Mercury or the Moon) joining or aspecting Jupiter, and Mars is not a benefic. Gaj Kesari can still fire in the same chart for other reasons, as in the worked example.
What happens when Mars and Jupiter are together in Capricorn or Cancer?
One is exalted and the other debilitated: Mars is exalted and Jupiter fallen in Capricorn, and the reverse in Cancer (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50).
Can the pair form Ruchaka and Hamsa at the same time?
Not in one sign. Ruchaka needs Mars in its own or exaltation sign and Hamsa needs Jupiter in its own or exaltation sign, both in a kendra, and no sign is own or exaltation for both grahas.
Does Jupiter with Mars cancel Mangal Dosha?
Not in this app. The engine flags Mangal Dosha from the house Mars occupies (1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12 from the ascendant) and looks at nothing else. The worked example has Jupiter beside Mars in the 1st and the flag is still raised, as mild.
Does the app compute planetary war between them?
No. BPHS defines it for grahas within one degree, but the engine has no war rule. Only 16 of 239 sampled Mars-Jupiter charts were that close.
Does the app suggest a remedy for this conjunction?
No. This app prescribes no gemstones, mantras, rituals or donations for any placement.
