What the numerology books this app is built on say about number 4, why they cannot agree on its planet or on whether it is a good number to have, how it reads as a birth number, a destiny number and a year number, and how to check each one against your own date of birth.

Article text is currently English only. The calculation below and the rest of the interface follow your chosen language.

Number 4 is the number this app's source books describe in the same few words: system, foundation, discipline, hard work. It is also one they cannot agree on. They differ on its planet, on whether it is a good destiny number, and on which numbers it gets on with. And 'being a 4' is not one fact. Your Mulank is 4 if you were born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd or 31st. Your Bhagyank is 4 if your whole birth date sums to it. You are in a Personal Year 4 for twelve months at a time, whatever your birth numbers are. And the digit 4 may or may not be written in your date at all. To see which apply to you, run the Life Path calculator and the Personal Year calculator.

What this page is and is not

It reports what named numerology books say and how this app's code applies them. On number 4 the books contradict each other; where they do, both readings are given. Several also prescribe gemstones, fasts and rituals for a 4, which this app does not reproduce. Nothing here predicts what will happen to you, and health claims are reported as a book's line, not as medical advice.

Rahu, Uranus or Mercury: which planet 4 belongs to

Advanced Vedic Numerology writes two names at once. Its table of numbers and planets gives 4 to Rahu/Uranus, its keyword list for the number is headed Uranus, and a list of Rahu characteristics follows straight after. Vedic Numerology Basic keeps them apart: Western numerology gives 4 to Uranus, Vedic numerology gives it to Rahu, and the book calls treating one as the other incorrect. The AIFAS course notes print Rahu/Herschel, on a slide titled Reality and Stability that reads 4 as the stage at which a person plans, competes and builds for security. Erik Tao's Western book lists number four under Uranus, with the birthdays 31, 22, 13 and 4.

The 1930s pamphlet The Power of Numbers, signed 'Numero', goes its own way three times. Its Chapter VI assigns number four to Mercury. The planetary list beside its magic square in Chapter XVII gives 4 to the Sun. And its Chapter X gives Uranus to number eight. The pamphlet does not reconcile these. This app's NUMBER_TRAITS table follows the Vedic assignment, so every reading of a 4 here names Rahu as ruler.

The link to astrology ends at the name. A numerology 4 is computed from calendar digits. It says nothing about where Rahu sits in your birth chart or when your Rahu Mahadasha runs. What Rahu means in a chart is covered in Rahu in Vedic astrology, and what to do when the two systems point different ways is the subject of when astrology and numerology disagree.

The split between nature and events is Advanced Vedic Numerology's own.

The first two are explained in Mulank, Bhagyank and Life Path. The short version, from this app's rules document: the Mulank reduces the day without keeping master numbers, so 13, 22 and 31 all become 4. The Bhagyank sums every digit of the date and keeps the masters 11, 22 and 33. So a birthday on the 22nd is a Mulank 4, but a birth date that sums to 22 is not a Bhagyank 4.

Mulank 4: born on the 4th, 13th, 22nd or 31st

Two portraits in the same books: the builder and the rebel

Advanced Vedic Numerology describes Moolank 4 in two lists. At its best: strong, stable, organised, punctual, patient, disciplined, loyal, practical, hardworking, honest. At its worst: rigid, stubborn, controlling, workaholic, intolerant, slow, sceptical, risk-averse, dull. The AIFAS notes agree: structured, law-abiding, a systematic worker with unusual patience, who holds grudges and cannot adjust to a change of habits. This app's own trait line for a 4, The Builder, follows this portrait: 'You build slowly and it holds - resist pressure to rush.'

The second portrait comes from the planet. The same book's keyword list for 4 has revolution sitting between foundation and organised, and its Rahu list reads like a different person: leaves things pending, takes shortcuts, moody, directionless, given to overthinking. Life With Number Magick Part 2 calls Rahu the master of unconventional thinking and number 4 people opinionated, rebellious and desire-driven as well as disciplined and rule-loving. Vedic Numerology Basic's Rahu slide joins the two: sharp-minded, organised and practical, with out-of-the-box thinking, but also egoistic, impatient and unsatisfied. The books print the rule-keeper and the rule-breaker side by side without reconciling them.

The Western books keep only the first portrait. Tao's keyword list is split by tradition: in his Eastern reading 4 means struggles and hardship; in his Western reading, dependable, hardworking and content with a simple life. Numerology Made Easy calls 4 the number of the Carpenter. Numero's sketch, drawn under Mercury, stands apart: his four people gather facts and remember them, advise the person in charge better than they would replace him, save money and buy property, make things well with their hands, and like to travel.

The four birthdays are not read identically

Born on theWhat Advanced Vedic Numerology says
4thWell organised and fond of a challenge; a close love of family, home and country; prepared to work long and hard.
13thHardworking and methodical, with the potential to be very successful; cautious, stubborn, tenacious; good with details at the expense of the whole picture. Usually does well in the end but often feels hemmed in by circumstances.
22ndRead through the master number 22: extremely capable, with major ups and downs and a tendency to nervous exhaustion; usually achieves more than most later in life.
31stGood business and managerial skills; starts at the bottom and rises slowly but steadily; a long memory for both a favour and a slight.

The 13th carries a Karmic Debt flag; the 22nd is not a master here

The AIFAS notes list four Karmic Debt numbers, 13, 14, 16 and 19, and this app's reduceWithKarmicDebt function watches for exactly those on the way down to a single digit. So a birthday on the 13th is flagged: Mulank 4 by way of 13. The notes read 13 as having to work unusually hard for each result, with recurring obstacles and a temptation to take the shortcut. Their answer is behavioural: one goal at a time, honesty and a kept timetable. The Name Number calculator reports the flag. The 22nd is different. The Mulank never keeps master numbers, so the 22nd is a plain Mulank 4 here, even though the book's paragraph for that day leans on the master number.

Bhagyank 4: when the whole birth date sums to 4

The Bhagyank adds every digit of the date. Advanced Vedic Numerology's own example is 5 October 1987: 5 + 1 + 0 + 1 + 9 + 8 + 7 = 31, and 3 + 1 = 4. That person has Mulank 5 and Bhagyank 4. A birth on 13 February 1990 sums to 25, which reduces to 7: Mulank 4, Bhagyank 7. One position tells you nothing about the other. In practice the totals that reduce to 4 are 4, 13, 31 and 40. A total of 22 stays 22.

What Destiny Number 4 means: one number, two verdicts

Advanced Vedic Numerology says people with Destiny Number 4 need to work hard to reach their goals. They are practical, reliable and well organised, enjoy routine, can make order out of chaos, and will plod on patiently for years if they can see the effort is worthwhile. The costs are rigidity and stubbornness: a 4 that has made up its mind is very hard to move. The negative use of the number, in the book's account, is resenting limitation and turning dominating.

The AIFAS notes are far less kind. Their slide calls 4 an undesirable destiny number: unexpected hurdles and sudden changes, several changes of job and even of field, and financial highs and lows. So the same number is the steady plodder in one book and a life of sudden reversals in another. The first reading is the builder; the second is Rahu. The Western books side with the builder: Tao's Life Path four reaches its destiny through work ethic and self-discipline.

A total of 13 on the way to 4

When the digits sum to exactly 13, as for 6 May 2000 (6 + 5 + 2), the engine reports Bhagyank 4 with a Karmic Debt 13 flag. Not every source accepts the premise. Numerology Made Easy argues that 13 has been wrongly blamed for bad luck: it has the 4 of foundation and discipline as its root and is, in the author's view, a good number to have on one's side. A total of 31 or 40 raises no flag.

Bhagyank 22 is not Bhagyank 4

A date whose digits sum to 22 stays 22. The rules document's example is 1 November 1990. Advanced Vedic Numerology calls 22 the Master Builder: the inspiration of the 11 joined to the practical, methodical nature of the 4, wasted if it is not practical. It adds that people on a master number usually start out showing more of the plain 2, 4 or 6. This app does not fold 22 into 4, with one stated exception: a nine-row table such as the 81-combination grid reads a 22 at 4. If the Life Path calculator shows 22, most of this page describes the number underneath yours.

Your Mulank and Bhagyank together

Advanced Vedic Numerology rates every Mulank-Bhagyank pair in a table it calls the 81 Combinations. The 81 Combinations calculator looks your pair up.

Five of the nine pairs also carry one of the book's one-line punch lines. For 4 with 1 it is 'Sometime king, sometime beggar'. For 4 with 4 the line is professional struggle without settling; for 4 with 8, professional struggle and late success; for 4 with 2, difficulty in marriage and results only after hard work; for 4 with 9 it is about health. No pair involving a 4 is rated Very Good. A double 4 is rated Bad, so more of the same number is not better. And these are one book's ratings, which no other source in the corpus repeats; the app prints them as that book's lines, not as forecasts.

The digit 4 in your birth-date grid

The grid counts how many times each digit from 1 to 9 is written in your date of birth. It is a separate question from the Mulank. A birth on 13 February 1990 has Mulank 4, yet the date is written 1, 3, 2, 1, 9, 9, 0: no 4 at all. Only the 4th, 14th or 24th, a birth in April, or a year containing a 4 puts the digit there. The Lo Shu Grid calculator shows your counts, and missing numbers in your Lo Shu grid explains what the count is and is not.

Two grids, two ways of counting

Advanced Vedic Numerology's worked grids add the Moolank and the Bhagyank as extra entries and leave out the century digits (PDF p.13); its grid for 22 April 1981 shows a second 4 marked as the psychic number. This app's Vedic Grid calculator casts its grid the same way, so there every Mulank 4 has a 4. The Lo Shu grid described above counts only the digits written in the full date, century included, and on that count three of the four Mulank 4 birthdays put no 4 there.

A missing 4

Advanced Vedic Numerology's list for a missing 4: no fixed working hours, loss of direction, disorganisation, falling short on final details, less focus, discipline and patience, and a preference for shortcuts. It also names a period, more struggle between the ages of 42 and 48. These are the book's claims, stated as certainties this app does not endorse; the engine reports only that the digit is absent. Numerology Made Easy has a parallel idea from the letters of the name: a name with no letter valued 4 is read as a lesson in laying a foundation by slow, steady work.

A repeated 4: two books, two directions

This app marks a digit as dominant when it appears twice or more. Tao's list for the 4 is mild throughout: once, stable and orderly; twice, pragmatic; three times, hardworking. Advanced Vedic Numerology treats any repetition as trouble. Its entry for Multiple 4 calls it the sign of an afflicted Rahu and lists struggle, sudden incidents and court cases, though one of its worked examples reads a double 4 as struggle with good financial stability. The two books disagree on direction, not just on degree.

Lines and shapes that pass through the 4

Advanced Vedic Numerology reads groups of cells in its own grid, which adds the Mulank and Bhagyank and leaves out the century, and the Vedic Grid calculator checks your date against each. The 4 sits in the bottom right corner, at the end of the row 2-8-4, which the book calls the line of ups and downs. Six that include the 4 are listed as the engine stores them; the calculator also checks the 1-4, 2-4 and 6-4 aspects, the (5,4,8) and (7,5,4) angulars and the (1,2,4) and (6,9,4) trines.

None of the twelve is marked favourable in the engine.

In the Lo Shu square the digit is top left and belongs to two planes this app reads, Mental (4, 9, 2) and Thought (4, 3, 8). In Tao's Arrows of Pythagoras it is bottom middle and lies on two lines: 4-5-6, read as Willpower or Frustration, and 1-4-7, read as Practicality or Impracticality. Tao gives no rule for choosing, so the app shows both names.

Personal Year 4: the one that has dates

Mulank and Bhagyank never change, which makes them hard to test. A Personal Year does change, and it names a period you can check afterwards. Anyone can be in a 4 year, whatever their birth numbers. The full method is in your Personal Year number. This app computes it two ways and shows both.

The Western method

Add the birth day, the birth month and the current calendar year, and reduce to one digit with no master numbers kept. For a birth on 22 August, 2026 gives 22 + 8 + 2026 = 2056, then 2 + 0 + 5 + 6 = 13, then 4: a Personal Year 4 for the whole of 2026. Because the cycle keeps no masters, this app never produces a Personal Year 22, although Tao's book lists one.

The Vedic method

Advanced Vedic Numerology's own formula is Mulank + birth month + the last two digits of the current year + the number of the weekday on which the birthday falls that year, and the period runs birthday to birthday. For the same birth: Mulank 4, month 8, year 26, and 22 August 2026 is a Saturday, Saturn's day, number 8. So 4 + 8 + 26 + 8 = 46, which reduces to 1. From that birthday the Vedic method says 1 while the Western method says 4 until December.

What a 4 year is read as

  • This app's own summary (PERSONAL_YEAR_MEANING): 'A foundation year. Unglamorous work now pays off for years.'
  • Advanced Vedic Numerology, in its table of Personal Year and running-age effects: the year you get the fruit of your work.
  • The AIFAS notes, under the heading Goal Achievement: planning and stabilising, less time for fun, results showing up, prudence with money, and a warning that without a specific goal the year can feel heavy.
  • Sally Faubion's Motivational Numerology: establishing a secure and stable foundation, and bringing order and consistency to a plan.
  • Tao: business, hard work, future planning.

Here the sources agree more than anywhere else on this page: a 4 year is work on something that has to last, and the Indian sources add that earlier effort starts to pay. None of them names an event. The falsifiable part is modest. Looking back on a 4 year, was it more about consolidation, routine and money put in order than the 3 year before it, read as outward and social, and the 5 year after it, read as change and restlessness?

Months and days inside the year

The Personal Month is the Personal Year plus the calendar month, reduced; the Personal Day is the Personal Month plus the day of the month, reduced. In a Personal Year 4 the only 4 month is September (4 + 9 = 13). This app's daily guidance gives a 4 day the theme of structure, suggests doing the unglamorous piece of work and closing one loop left open too long, and answers yes to settling a decision that day, because 'a 4 day favours the solid, unexciting call'.

Number 4 in the numerology dasha

Advanced Vedic Numerology describes a planetary period system of its own, unrelated to the astrological Vimshottari dasha. Nine lords run in the fixed order Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Rahu, Mercury, Venus, Ketu, Saturn, Mars, each for as many years as its number, so Rahu rules 4 years of a 45-year cycle. The sequence starts at the lord of your Mulank, with a full first period from the day of birth. The Numerology Dasha calculator builds the timeline.

The timeline for a Mulank 4

A Mulank 4 therefore begins life in the Rahu period. For a birth on 13 February 1990, a date the book itself uses as a Moolank 4 example, the engine returns Rahu 1990 to 1994, Mercury to 1999, Venus to 2005, Ketu to 2012, Saturn to 2020, Mars to 2029, Sun to 2030, Moon to 2032, Jupiter to 2035, and Rahu again from 13 February 2035 to 13 February 2039, at ages 45 to 49. Every boundary falls on the birthday.

The source gives the Rahu period no character sketch beyond the general reading of the number, so this page does not supply one.

Sub-periods, running age and Gochar

Each Mahadasha divides into nine Antardashas in the same order, starting from its own lord. The book's table for the Rahu Mahadasha, in years-months-days, is Rahu 0-4-08, Mercury 0-5-10, Venus 0-6-12, Ketu 0-7-14, Saturn 0-8-16, Mars 0-9-18, Sun 0-1-02, Moon 0-2-04, Jupiter 0-3-06: exactly four 360-day years. The engine applies the same proportions to the real calendar span, so its dates differ by a day or two. For the 1990 birth the opening Rahu sub-period of the second Rahu Mahadasha runs 13 February to 22 June 2035.

The running-age number is the digit sum of the year of life you are in, and the book's favourable ages for a Moolank 4 are 4, 13, 22, 31, 40, 49, 58, 67 and 76. The AIFAS notes give the same series from 13 as the important years of a Destiny Number 4. Gochar divides the running age by 9 and counts the remainder along a wheel that starts at the Mulank; the book's worked example for the 1990 birth in its 33rd year gives 9, and the engine reproduces it. Separately, a general list in the same book gives ages 45 to 55 to Rahu for everyone. The Western Pinnacle and Challenge cycles can also land on 4, with age ranges; the Numerology Profile calculator computes both.

Who a 4 is said to get on with

On compatibility the sources are furthest apart. The app's own harmony list feeds the Love Compatibility calculator, and the compatibility feature reads several of the other tables beside it. The AIFAS notes alone print five friendship tables; two are shown here.

Look at 8. Five of these tables list it as friendly to 4, Advanced Vedic Numerology's among them, yet the same book rates the 4-8 pair Very Bad in its 81 grid. Vedic Numerology Basic holds both positions in one row: Rahu and Saturn are friends at a distance and permanent non-friends. Number 2 splits the other way. Three tables mark it against a 4 and the 81 grid rates the pair Bad, while this app's harmony list and the marriage archetypes count it as compatible, and Advanced Vedic Numerology's own Pure Anti Combination table names Mulank 2 as the marriage match for a Mulank 4. For the other side of both disputes see number 8 in numerology and number 2 in numerology.

Numbers 1 and 6 are the only ones none of these seven tables marks against a 4. A second 4 is no safer: the 81 grid rates the double 4 Bad and Advanced Vedic Numerology says a couple should not share a Mulank, while this app's harmony list includes 4 with 4.

Days, colours, letters and professions

This app's favourables bundle for a Mulank 4 is derived from Rahu: Saturday as the day, smoky grey and brown as the colours, south-west as the direction, twilight as the time, and unconventional ventures, technology and foreign-linked work as career fields. Favourable numbers are 2, 4, 6 and 7. The favourable initials are D, M and V, the letters valued 4 in the Pythagorean table the engine uses; the Chaldean table, which the Name Number calculator applies, values D, M and T at 4 instead.

Advanced Vedic Numerology's own table for Moolank 4 overlaps only in part: Saturday, the month of August, and the numbers 5, 6 and 8. So the book includes 8 and leaves out 2 where this app does the reverse. Its suitable professions for a 4 include real estate, industry, jewellery, law and pathology, and it tells a 4 to avoid all work of 2 and 9. The lists are not tidy: real estate appears under 4 and again under 9.

Colours split too. Advanced Vedic Numerology favours blue and avoids red. Numero's table, which the Lucky Colours calculator uses and keys to the Life Path number, gives a 4 heliotrope, crimson and purple as best and scarlet, olive, white and red as worst. Both avoid red, yet crimson is among Numero's best, and his own note says shades of a named colour carry the same force. This app does not claim either list works.

The hidden 4

Advanced Vedic Numerology adds two hidden numbers to a date: the number of the weekday of birth and the number of the Sun sign. No weekday carries a 4, so the only hidden 4 comes from Aquarius, which the book gives to Uranus. The book's own period table runs Aquarius from 14 February to 13 March, and this app's table uses those dates. A birth on 13 February, such as the 1990 example above, is still Capricorn and gets 8; a birth on 14 February is the first day of a hidden 4. Sites that use the Western sun-sign dates, Aquarius from 20 January to 18 February, give a different sign for most of those weeks. Check yours with the Hidden and Shadow Numbers calculator.

How to check all of this for your own date

  1. Find the two fixed numbers with the Life Path calculator. Note which position the 4 is in, and whether the Bhagyank shows 22.
  2. Look the pair up in the 81 Combinations calculator. The page for the other number in your pair reads the same cell from its side: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9.
  3. Count the digit in the Lo Shu Grid: absent, once, or dominant. Then see which lines through the 4 are complete in the Vedic Grid.
  4. Get both Personal Year figures from the Personal Year calculator and write down the dates each one covers.
  5. Find your Rahu period in the Numerology Dasha calculator.
  6. Without an account, the free numerology tool runs the core numbers in the browser; signed-in readers get the full set on the numerology feature page. The method is on the methodology page and the books on the sources page.

Common misreadings

  • Assuming Mulank 4 puts a 4 in the Lo Shu grid. There it does only for the 4th; the Vedic Grid adds the Mulank, so there it always does.
  • Treating 4 as an unlucky number. Oliver Tan's Power of Numbers, whose chart method the Power of Numbers calculator implements, traces the fear of 4 in Chinese communities to how the word sounds in Cantonese, and argues the number stands for stability, planning and intelligence. The caution in the Vedic books is different: it comes from Rahu and is about volatility.
  • Reading 22 as 4, or fearing 13. A date that sums to 22 is a Bhagyank 22, and 13 is a Karmic Debt in one source and a good number in another.
  • Quoting a compatibility rule as settled. Whether 8 is a friend or a Very Bad pairing, and whether 2 is an enemy or the recommended spouse, depends on which table you open.
  • Mixing the two Personal Year methods. The Western figure runs January to December; the Vedic one runs birthday to birthday. A 4 in one is not a 4 in the other.

Questions people ask about number 4

Which birth dates give Mulank 4?
The 4th, 13th, 22nd and 31st of any month. The Mulank uses the day only and reduces it to a single digit without keeping master numbers. Advanced Vedic Numerology reads the four days differently from each other, and this app adds a Karmic Debt flag for the 13th.
Which planet rules number 4?
Rahu, in the Vedic books and in this app. Western numerology gives 4 to Uranus, and Advanced Vedic Numerology prints both names together. The 1930s pamphlet The Power of Numbers assigns 4 to Mercury in one chapter and to the Sun in a later list.
Is Mulank 4 the same as Life Path 4?
No. Mulank comes from the day of the month alone. Life Path, which this app treats as the same calculation as Bhagyank, sums every digit of the full date. A person born on 13 February 1990 has Mulank 4 and Bhagyank 7. See Mulank, Bhagyank and Life Path.
Is 4 an unlucky or difficult number?
The books disagree. Advanced Vedic Numerology's Destiny Number 4 is a patient, reliable worker. The AIFAS notes call the same destiny number undesirable, with sudden changes. Oliver Tan argues that the popular fear of 4 comes from the sound of the word in Cantonese. None of these is a prediction about a person.
Is 22 the same as 4?
As a birthday, yes: the 22nd is a plain Mulank 4 here. As a destiny number, no: a date whose digits sum to 22 keeps the master number 22, which Advanced Vedic Numerology calls the Master Builder. The one exception is a nine-row table such as the 81-combination grid, where a 22 is read at 4.
What does a Personal Year 4 mean?
A year of foundations. This app summarises it as unglamorous work that pays off for years, and Advanced Vedic Numerology says it is when you get the fruit of your work. None of the sources predicts a specific event, and the Western and Vedic methods often give different numbers for the same months.
Are 4 and 8 compatible?
The sources contradict each other. Five of the tables above list 8 as friendly to 4, while the 81 grid in Advanced Vedic Numerology rates the 4-8 pair Very Bad. There is no agreed answer; number 8 in numerology gives the other side.
