In short

In this app's computation Mercury turns retrograde nine times between 26 February 2026 and 11 October 2028 (UTC), three times a year and for 20.4 to 24.2 days each time. The period from 24 October to 13 November 2026 lies in Libra. Saravali reads a retrograde benefic as strong while Advanced Predictive Astrology reads retrograde planets as adverse, and the books do not agree.

In this app's computation Mercury turns retrograde nine times between 26 February 2026 and 11 October 2028, three in each of 2026, 2027 and 2028, and each lasts between 20.4 and 24.2 days. This page gives the station dates, then what BPHS, Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology say about a retrograde planet, which for Mercury is a mixed answer. For the planet see Mercury in Vedic astrology; the term is defined at vakri, and this page does not repeat it.

a check script mercury, run 2026-10-22. This app's computation in UTC, quoted to the day. Signs are sidereal (Lahiri). A planet is nearly stationary for days around a station, so other software can differ by hours or more.

India is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of UTC. Three of the direct stations fall late in the UTC evening (19:38 on 20 March 2026, 22:48 on 23 July 2026 and 19:46 on 4 July 2027), so by Indian clocks they belong to the next calendar date. Three retrograde stations fall within about an hour of midnight in India (23:13 IST on 29 June 2026, 22:58 on 9 February 2027 and 23:37 on 10 June 2027), so other software may put them on the following date.

The first retrograde of the year starts earlier each time: 26 February 2026, 9 February 2027, 24 January 2028. The October 2026 retrograde stays in Libra; a year later Mercury turns retrograde at Libra 10.68, close to where the 2026 period turned direct (Libra 10.8), and that period carries it back into Virgo. Mercury's sign pages: Aquarius, Cancer, Gemini, Libra, Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo. The other retrograde planets: Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

How the engine decides that Mercury is retrograde

The test is the engine's, defined on the vakri page: Mercury is retrograde when its geocentric longitude is lower half a day after an instant than half a day before. The station tool narrows each change of direction to the minute and checks it against the engine's own transit flag a day either side. The Sun and Moon are never retrograde and the nodes always are; BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 itself calls Rahu and Ketu always retrograde.

What the classical texts say about a retrograde Mercury

None of the three books has a chapter on Mercury retrograde. They speak of a retrograde planet in general, and what that means for Mercury turns on a question a birth chart answers: is Mercury a benefic there? BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts Budh a malefic if he joins a malefic, and Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 9 says the same of Mercury in the company of malefics.

SourceWhat it says of a retrograde planetReading
BPHS Ch. 27 Sl. 21-23Retrogression (Vakr) is the first of eight kinds of motion for Mars to Saturn and carries the highest motional strength of the eight, 60Strength
Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 36A planet in retrograde motion becomes strongStrength
Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 39A retrograde benefic is strong; a retrograde malefic causes grief and purposeless wanderingDepends on benefic or malefic
Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 14Some hold that a planet retrograde in its exaltation sign produces no effectA dissenting view
Advanced Predictive Astrology, Vol. II p. 325Under "Behaviour of retrograde planets in transit": a planet retrograde at birth is generally adverse, felt on health in its dasha, even a benefic; for a person born with a retrograde 6th lord in the ascendant, trouble at work while that planet is retrograde in transitAdverse, for a chart condition
Advanced Predictive Astrology, Vol. II p. 124A list of dasha rules says the dasha and antardasha of retrograde planets are never goodAdverse
Paraphrased from bphs.txt, saravali.txt and advanced-predictive-astrology.txt. The older books count retrograde motion as strength, with qualifications; the modern book reads it as difficulty.

The first two rows are about strength, which this app counts: a retrograde Mercury earns the Chesta (motional strength) point in its simplified Shad Bala, though the engine's comment for that cites a handbook (Kannan p. 23), not these books. Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 39 adds the split: strong for a Mercury that is a benefic in the chart, grief and wandering for one joined to a malefic. Ch. 41 Sl. 66-68, in its Moola Dasa chapter, repeats it for the dasha of a retrograde planet.

The exaltation view bears on two periods in the table. Saravali Ch. 3 Sl. 35-36 gives Virgo as Mercury's exaltation sign, with the deep point at 15 degrees. Ch. 5 Sl. 14 says some hold that a planet retrograde while exalted produces no effect, and that the same holds if it becomes exalted by entering the sign in retrograde motion from the next sign. The October 2027 period does this: it turns retrograde in Libra and ends at Virgo 25.07. The September 2028 period is wholly in Virgo, from 24.34 back to 9.22, so it passes the 15-degree point while retrograde. Only Saravali reports the view, and as that of some.

Saravali Ch. 36 Sl. 7-9 speaks of the stations themselves: in its count of a planet's rays, one that has just begun to retrograde has twofold rays and one that has just turned direct loses an eighth. This app computes the base ray figure from Sl. 1-6 but does not apply the Sl. 7-9 adjustments, so a station changes nothing in it.

Advanced Predictive Astrology is the only one of the three that reads a retrograde in transit. On p. 308 it says events are set moving when certain planets, which it names as the ascendant lord, the 10th lord and the running dasha and sub-period lords, combust, rise, retrograde or change sign. On p. 325, under "Behaviour of retrograde planets in transit", its example is a 6th lord retrograde in the 1st house: the native may suffer repeatedly at work while it is retrograde in transit, promotions or transfers are held up, and the matter moves on once it turns direct. On p. 259, for a natal chart, it quotes The Times of Astrology: a retrograde planet usually creates a deficiency in one aspect of its house. None of this names Mercury.

What the books do not say matters as much. Mercury's matters in the texts are speech (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13), writing and speech (Saravali Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13) and business dealings and friends (BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6). A search of BPHS, Saravali and Advanced Predictive Astrology for contracts, signing, agreements, gadgets, electronics or communications found no passage that links them to a retrograde Mercury. Advice you may have seen to postpone signings or avoid new gadgets has no basis in these books, and this app does not give it.

Retrograde at birth and in transit: how this app shows it

At birth, the birth chart calculator marks Mercury retrograde with the engine's test applied to the birth moment. Of 3,000 sampled birth moments from 1985 to 2060, Mercury is flagged retrograde in 578, or 19.3 percent: a sample of birth moments, not of people. A retrograde Mercury also has a tighter combustion limit, 12 degrees from the Sun instead of 14. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4 adds a dasha rule: if the graha is retrograde, the effects that would arrive by its decanate at the start, middle or end of the dasha arrive in reverse order. The Mercury Mahadasha page covers the period itself, and the Shad Bala calculator shows the motional strength.

In transit, the Gochar calculator returns the same flag with Mercury's degree in its sign. The Gochara verdict does not read it: the verdict comes from the house Mercury occupies counted from your Moon, so a retrograde and a direct Mercury in the same house get the same one. The Daily reading does use it: it takes one point off a retrograde graha's score for the day.

What to take care of

Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II p. 325 is the one cited text that ties a retrograde transit to difficulty, and it does so for a condition in the birth chart: a person born with a retrograde 6th lord in the ascendant meets repeated trouble at work, and promotions or transfers held up, while that planet is retrograde in transit, until it turns direct. The same page reads a planet that is retrograde at birth as generally adverse for health during its own dasha. It does not name Mercury, and Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 39 reads a retrograde benefic as strong, so the books differ. The points below are ordinary care for readers whose chart meets those conditions, not rules from any text:

  • If Mercury rules your 6th house and was retrograde in your ascendant at birth, the book's example describes your chart: allow extra time for a promotion, transfer or approval whose decision falls inside a period in the table. The birth chart calculator shows both.
  • If Mercury was retrograde at birth and you are in its Mahadasha or a Mercury sub-period, the book's health remark is about that period, not about these dates: book the routine check-up you have been postponing. This is not a diagnosis - see a doctor for any symptom.
  • Do not postpone or cancel a sound plan, a signing or a purchase only because of these dates. None of the three books asks for that, and this app does not.
How many times is Mercury retrograde between 2026 and 2028, and for how long?
Nine times in this app's computation, three a year, each lasting 20.4 to 24.2 days. The first turns retrograde on 26 February 2026 and the last turns direct on 11 October 2028 (UTC).
Do BPHS, Saravali or Advanced Predictive Astrology say not to sign contracts or buy electronics during Mercury retrograde?
No. A search of the three found no passage linking a retrograde Mercury to contracts, signing, gadgets or communications. This app does not give that advice.
Is a retrograde Mercury strong or weak in a birth chart?
The books differ. BPHS Ch. 27 and Saravali Ch. 4 count retrograde motion as strength, and Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 39 reads a retrograde benefic as strong and a retrograde malefic as a cause of grief and purposeless wandering. Advanced Predictive Astrology reads retrograde planets as generally adverse. This app reports the flag and does not change its dignity labels.
How do I know whether Mercury was retrograde when I was born?
Enter your birth date in the birth chart calculator; Mercury is marked retrograde when its motion across the day around your birth moment is backward.
Why might another site give a different date for the same station?
A planet is almost stationary for days around a station, so a few hours of difference is normal. Dates here are UTC, and three of the direct stations fall on the next calendar date in India. Signs and degrees are sidereal (Lahiri); a tropical zodiac shows different degrees at the same moment.

Gochar Transits Today

All nine grahas' signs today, read from your natal Moon and not your ascendant.

A birth time is optional. Without one this is read at local noon on your birth date - and the Moon moves about 13 degrees in a day, so add the time if you know it.

No place is asked for on this page, so the time is read as Indian Standard Time (IST). Born outside India? Run it on its own page, where you can add the place.
