In short
Mercury in Cancer sits in the sign of the Moon, a natural enemy of Mercury, so its dignity is Enemy sign by default and can read Neutral or Enemy sign in a real chart. Saravali Ch. 26 reads it as learning and poetry, with restlessness and friction with relatives, then changes the verdict according to which planet aspects it. The house Cancer occupies from your Lagna decides what Mercury rules and where it acts.
Cancer belongs to the Moon, which this engine counts as a natural enemy of Mercury, so with nothing else known the label is Enemy sign; in a real chart it can read Neutral or Enemy sign. That label is only the starting point. What the placement does in a chart is a separate question, answered by the house Cancer occupies from your Lagna, the houses Mercury rules from there, and the planets that aspect it. This page sets out each of those, with the classical statement for this exact combination.
It covers the combination only. For Mercury as a graha - its significations, strength and dashas - start with Mercury in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its lord, its nakshatras and what a rising Cancer means - see Cancer, Karka Rashi. What follows is a map of rules and of what the texts say, not a forecast about anyone.
Mercury in Cancer: dignity, and how this app decides it
Cancer is neither Mercury's own sign nor its sign of exaltation (Virgo) or debilitation (Pisces). So the label comes from the relationship between Mercury and the sign's lord, the Moon. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 derives the natural relationship; this engine's table of natural relationships makes the Moon a natural enemy of Mercury, which gives the sign-only label Enemy sign.
| Degrees of Cancer | Label in this engine (no chart) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Enemy sign | Nil |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relationship between the planet and the sign's lord. For Mercury in Cancer none of the first four tests applies, so the label always comes from the relationship with the Moon, and it is the same at every degree of the sign.
In a real chart the engine uses the fivefold relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58, combining the natural relation with the temporary relation of Sl. 56: two grahas are temporary friends when one sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the other, and temporary enemies otherwise. Moon is a natural enemy of Mercury. If the Moon sits in one of those six signs counted from Cancer, the compound is Neutral and the label reads Neutral; if it sits anywhere else, the compound is Great Enemy and the label reads Enemy sign. So Mercury in Cancer can show as Neutral or Enemy sign depending on where the Moon is. The full rule is under Panchadha Maitri.
The scoring is the engine's, not the text's. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 grades the results - exaltation full, Moolatrikona three quarters, own sign half, a friend's sign a quarter, a neutral's an eighth, an enemy's sign or debilitation nil. The engine gives Exalted and Moolatrikona a sthana strength of 10, Own sign 7.5, Friendly sign 6.25, Neutral 5, and Enemy sign and Debilitated 0. The order is the same; the gaps between the steps are not. The general idea is under dignity. Neighbouring placements show the contrast: Mercury in Gemini and Mercury in Leo, the exaltation case Mercury in Virgo, and the debilitation case Mercury in Pisces.
The nakshatras Mercury moves through in Cancer
Cancer holds pada 4 of Punarvasu, all four padas of Pushya and all four padas of Ashlesha. Each pada is 3 degrees 20 minutes, so the spans below follow from the pada count. The dignity label is the same in all of them; the nakshatra adds its own lord and pada to the reading, which the nakshatra pages take up: Punarvasu, Pushya and Ashlesha.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Cancer | Span within Cancer | Mercury's label there (no chart) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Punarvasu | 4 | 0 degrees to 3 degrees 20 minutes | Enemy sign |
| Pushya | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 3 degrees 20 minutes to 16 degrees 40 minutes | Enemy sign |
| Ashlesha | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 16 degrees 40 minutes to 30 degrees | Enemy sign |
What the classical texts say about Mercury in Cancer
Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 7-8
The Cancer line is divided. On one side: learned, a good poet, drawn to music and to living in other countries, interested in many kinds of work, and known through the fame of the family's ancestors. On the other: fickle, prattling, fond of arguments, at odds with relatives, of poor disposition, and losing wealth through enmity with women, in the text's words.
The lines on either side make the contrast clear. For Gemini (Sl. 5-6) the chapter gives able speech, learning, poetry and independence; for Leo (Sl. 9-10) it gives fame and wealth set against little wisdom and a weak memory. For Cancer the short form is learning and poetry, with restlessness and friction with relatives. See Mercury in Gemini and Mercury in Leo for those lines in full.
Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 43-48: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads Mercury in Cancer under the aspect of each other planet. These lines often change the verdict more than the sign line does, because they are where the chapter turns praise into censure or the reverse. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Sun: a trade with the hands: a washerman, gardener, house-builder or gem-smith.
- Aspected by the Moon: loss of wealth or vigour on account of women, and misery for the same reason.
- Aspected by Mars: little learning, garrulity and lying, invention of fictions, theft, and affectionate speech.
- Aspected by Jupiter: a great scholar, dear to all, fortunate, dear to the king, who crosses the boundaries of learning.
- Aspected by Venus: handsome and attractive, skilled in singing and instruments, fortunate and gentle.
- Aspected by Saturn: vanity, sin, confinement, want of virtue, and hostility to siblings and elders.
The Bhrigu Sutras commentary notes that Mercury is never more than 28 degrees from the Sun and Venus never more than 48. A planet seven signs away is at least 150 degrees off, so neither the Sun nor Venus can ever stand in the 7th sign from Mercury, and their lines describe a configuration the sky does not produce. The pattern is the useful part: the same sign reads well or badly depending on what aspects it, so the sign line is only half of Saravali's verdict. Which of these lines applies to a given chart is a matter of counting houses, as the worked example below shows.
Saravali Ch. 45 on the dignity itself
Saravali Ch. 45, "Effects of Planetary Dignities", adds a short line for each class of dignity, independent of the sign. For Mercury in an enemy's sign (Sl. 19-21) it gives short of intelligence, with many miseries and great poverty. The chapter has no line for a neutral's sign, so where the engine reads Neutral, Saravali Ch. 45 is silent. These are the text's statements; this app reports them and does not turn them into predictions.
BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras
BPHS does not give a sign-by-sign line for Mercury. Its Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 rule for Bhadra Yoga needs Mercury in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra, so Mercury in Cancer never forms it, whatever the Lagna. The Mercury section of the Bhrigu Sutras commentary gives the same three-way split of Virgo (the first 15 degrees exaltation, 16 to 20 Mooltrikona, the rest Swakshetra), the whole of Gemini as Swakshetra, and the same friends (Sun, Venus), enemy (Moon) and neutrals (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn). The Bhrigu Sutras proper is arranged by house rather than by sign, so it has no line for Mercury in Cancer as such.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: Mercury's exaltation is Virgo and its debilitation Pisces, deepest at 15 degrees (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50, Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35-36, the Bhrigu Sutras commentary).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali weighs it by the aspecting planet (Ch. 26 Sl. 43-48); BPHS by rules such as the Kendra test for Bhadra Yoga.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for Mercury in Cancer as such. Of the texts used here, Saravali is the only one that writes one.
- Different numbers: the Bhrigu Sutras commentary treats Mercury as combust within 8 and a half degrees of the Sun; this engine uses 14 degrees (12 when retrograde).
- Different scales: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 puts Moolatrikona a step below exaltation; this engine gives both the same sthana strength.
What Mercury rules from each Lagna, with Mercury in Cancer
Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. With whole-sign houses the table below is mechanical: the second column is where Cancer falls, the third and fourth are the houses Mercury rules. The planned house pages, such as Mercury in the 1st house and Mercury in the 10th house, take each house further.
| Lagna | House of Mercury (Cancer) | Mercury rules | Mercury also rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 4th | 3rd (Gemini) | 6th (Virgo) |
| Taurus | 3rd | 2nd (Gemini) | 5th (Virgo) |
| Gemini | 2nd | 1st (Gemini) | 4th (Virgo) |
| Cancer | 1st | 12th (Gemini) | 3rd (Virgo) |
| Leo | 12th | 11th (Gemini) | 2nd (Virgo) |
| Virgo | 11th | 10th (Gemini) | 1st (Virgo) |
| Libra | 10th | 9th (Gemini) | 12th (Virgo) |
| Scorpio | 9th | 8th (Gemini) | 11th (Virgo) |
| Sagittarius | 8th | 7th (Gemini) | 10th (Virgo) |
| Capricorn | 7th | 6th (Gemini) | 9th (Virgo) |
| Aquarius | 6th | 5th (Gemini) | 8th (Virgo) |
| Pisces | 5th | 4th (Gemini) | 7th (Virgo) |
Two groups of rows are worth singling out. For Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces rising, Cancer is a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th). For Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius rising, it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th), and the engine's planet table names that house type alongside the dignity. Neither fact changes the dignity label; both change how the planet is read.
Worked example: 2 July 1985, 10:20 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine and found by a deterministic search. Leo rises at 18.67 degrees. Mercury is at 9.98 degrees of Cancer, in Pushya pada 2, in the 12th house, not retrograde and not combust. The engine labels it Enemy sign. Anyone can re-enter the date, time and place in the Birth Chart calculator and see the same chart.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Gemini 16.61 | Ardra (3) | 11 | Friendly sign |
| Moon | Sagittarius 12.56 | Mula (4) | 5 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Gemini 21.41, combust | Punarvasu (1) | 11 | Neutral |
| Mercury | Cancer 9.98 | Pushya (2) | 12 | Enemy sign |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 22.2, retrograde | Shravana (4) | 6 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Taurus 1.97 | Krittika (2) | 10 | Own sign |
| Saturn | Libra 28.24, retrograde | Vishakha (3) | 3 | Exalted |
| Rahu | Aries 21.85, retrograde | Bharani (3) | 9 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 21.85, retrograde | Vishakha (1) | 3 | Neutral |
Why Enemy sign. The Moon, the lord of Cancer, is in Sagittarius, the 6th sign counted from Cancer. That makes it a temporary enemy (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56). Natural enemy plus temporary enemy gives Great Enemy under Sl. 57-58, which the engine shows as Enemy sign. Here it matches the sign-only label, Enemy sign, but a different position of the Moon would have moved it.
Lordship. For a Leo Lagna, Gemini is the 11th house and Virgo the 2nd, so Mercury rules the 2nd and the 11th and sits in the 12th. The 12th is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th), which the engine notes beside the dignity.
Aspects. Saravali's aspect lines need a planet whose drishti reaches Cancer. Using the rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - Jupiter in the 6th and Saturn in the 3rd aspect the 12th. So these Saravali lines apply alongside the sign line: for Jupiter, a great scholar, dear to all, fortunate, dear to the king, who crosses the boundaries of learning; for Saturn, vanity, sin, confinement, want of virtue, and hostility to siblings and elders. Where lines pull in different directions, the text does not say which wins, and this page does not decide it.
Company. No other graha shares Cancer with Mercury here, and it is neither combust nor retrograde, so the reading rests on the dignity, the house and the aspects above.
The rest of the chart. Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn, Venus is in its own sign in Taurus and Saturn is exalted in Libra. That is a reminder that one placement describes one part of a chart, and the reading of Mercury in Cancer is never the reading of the whole.
How often Mercury is in Cancer
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mercury was in Cancer in 239 of them, 8 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary notes that Mercury is never more than 28 degrees from the Sun, so Mercury moves through the signs roughly alongside the Sun over each year, with retrograde loops that can hold it in one sign for longer. The share therefore moves with which parts of the year the sample happens to cover.
Checking Mercury in Cancer in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Mercury is in Cancer and note the label the planet table gives it.
- Note the house Cancer occupies and the houses Gemini and Virgo occupy: those are where Mercury sits and what it rules.
- Find the Moon and count from Cancer to its sign. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th makes it a temporary friend; anything else a temporary enemy. That decides the label.
- List the planets that aspect Cancer: anything in the 7th sign from it, Mars when the sign is 4th or 8th from Mars, Jupiter when it is 5th or 9th from Jupiter, Saturn when it is 3rd or 10th from Saturn. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 43-48 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, the ninth-part chart with the Navamsa calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Mercury Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Mercury exalted or debilitated in Cancer?
- Neither. Mercury is exalted in Virgo and debilitated in Pisces. In Cancer it is in the sign of the Moon, labelled by relationship. See Mercury in Virgo.
- Does the degree of Mercury in Cancer matter?
- Not for the label, which is the same at every degree of Cancer. The degree still sets the nakshatra and pada, and how close Mercury is to the Sun for combustion.
- Can another planet change the dignity of Mercury in Cancer?
- Yes, through the Moon. Its position decides the temporary relationship, and the fivefold result can read Neutral or Enemy sign. Aspects change the Saravali reading but not the label.
- Does Mercury in Cancer give Bhadra Yoga?
- No. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 needs Mercury in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra, and Cancer is neither for Mercury.
- Which nakshatras can Mercury occupy in Cancer?
- Punarvasu (pada 4), Pushya (padas 1, 2, 3, 4) and Ashlesha (padas 1, 2, 3, 4), per this engine's nakshatra table.
- How common is Mercury in Cancer?
- In this app's sample it was in Cancer in 239 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8 per cent. That describes the sky in the sample, not a share of people.
