In short
Mercury in Virgo is exalted from 0 to 15 degrees, moolatrikona from 15 to 20 degrees, own sign from 20 to 30 degrees, as BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 divides the sign. Saravali Ch. 26 reads it as eloquence, skill in writing and the arts, and fame, then changes the verdict according to which planet aspects it. The house Virgo occupies from your Lagna decides what Mercury rules and where it acts.
Mercury in Virgo carries more than one dignity, and which one applies depends on the degree: exalted from 0 to 15 degrees, moolatrikona from 15 to 20 degrees, own sign from 20 to 30 degrees. That label is only the starting point. What the placement does in a chart is a separate question, answered by the house Virgo occupies from your Lagna, the houses Mercury rules from there, and the planets that aspect it. This page sets out each of those, with the classical statement for this exact combination.
It covers the combination only. For Mercury as a graha - its significations, strength and dashas - start with Mercury in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its lord, its nakshatras and what a rising Virgo means - see Virgo, Kanya Rashi. What follows is a map of rules and of what the texts say, not a forecast about anyone.
Mercury in Virgo: dignity, and how this app decides it
BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 lists the exaltation signs of the seven grahas and their deepest degrees; for Mercury (Budh) the sign is Virgo and the deepest point 15 degrees. The same sloka puts debilitation in the 7th sign from exaltation, at the same degree, which for Mercury is Pisces at 15 degrees. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35-36 gives the same signs and degrees. So Virgo is where Mercury is exalted (uchcha), with the peak at 15 degrees. It is also Mercury's own sign, and BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 divides Kanya three ways for Budh: the first 15 degrees are the exaltation zone, the next 5 Mooltrikon, and the last 10 own house: Moolatrikona and Swakshetra both have a share of the sign.
| Degrees of Virgo | Label in this engine (no chart) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 15 | Exalted | Full |
| 15 to 20 | Moolatrikona | Three quarters (full less one fourth) |
| 20 to 30 | Own sign | One half |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relationship between the planet and the sign's lord. For Mercury in Virgo the first tests already decide it, by degree. A Mercury below 15 degrees is labelled Exalted; from 15 up to 20 it is Moolatrikona; from 20 up to 30 it is Own sign. The boundaries are exact: 15 degrees itself already belongs to the second band. Mercury is the only graha whose exaltation, Moolatrikona and own sign all share one sign, so Virgo is the one placement where three labels follow each other within 30 degrees. Because Mercury is the lord of Virgo, the relationship test is never reached, and no other planet's position can change the label.
The scoring is the engine's, not the text's. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 grades the results - exaltation full, Moolatrikona three quarters, own sign half, a friend's sign a quarter, a neutral's an eighth, an enemy's sign or debilitation nil. The engine gives Exalted and Moolatrikona a sthana strength of 10, Own sign 7.5, Friendly sign 6.25, Neutral 5, and Enemy sign and Debilitated 0. The order is the same; the gaps between the steps are not. The general idea is under dignity. Neighbouring placements show the contrast: Mercury in Leo and Mercury in Libra, and the debilitation case Mercury in Pisces.
The nakshatras Mercury moves through in Virgo
Virgo holds padas 2, 3, 4 of Uttara Phalguni, all four padas of Hasta and padas 1, 2 of Chitra. Each pada is 3 degrees 20 minutes, so the spans below follow from the pada count. The dignity bands cut across the nakshatras as the table shows, so the nakshatra alone settles only part of the label. The nakshatra pages go further: Uttara Phalguni, Hasta and Chitra.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Virgo | Span within Virgo | Mercury's label there (no chart) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Uttara Phalguni | 2, 3, 4 | 0 degrees to 10 degrees | Exalted |
| Hasta | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 10 degrees to 23 degrees 20 minutes | Exalted, then Moolatrikona, then Own sign |
| Chitra | 1, 2 | 23 degrees 20 minutes to 30 degrees | Own sign |
What the classical texts say about Mercury in Virgo
Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 11-12
Saravali does not write a separate Virgo line: Sl. 11-12 is Mercury in its exaltation sign. In paraphrase: quite virtuous, eloquent and skilful, versed in writing and poetry and in the fine and mechanical arts, sweet-natured, liked by women, honoured by the virtuous, modest, fond of argument, famous, charitable and strong. The line adds that the native is not very virile and is the eldest son, which are the text's statements.
The lines on either side make the contrast clear. For Leo (Sl. 9-10) the chapter gives fame and wealth set against little wisdom and a weak memory; for Libra (Sl. 13-14) it gives able speech and wide business, with lavish spending. For Virgo the short form is eloquence, skill in writing and the arts, and fame. See Mercury in Leo and Mercury in Libra for those lines in full.
Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 37-42: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads Mercury in Gemini or Virgo, its own signs, under the aspect of each other planet. These lines often change the verdict more than the sign line does, because they are where the chapter turns praise into censure or the reverse. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Sun: truthful, fortunate, dear to the king, a lord himself, polite and liked by all.
- Aspected by the Moon: sweet-natured but garrulous and quarrelsome, keen on learning, firm, and successful in undertakings.
- Aspected by Mars: an injured body and uncleanliness, yet a genius in the king's service and dear to him.
- Aspected by Jupiter: a king's minister, excellent, handsome, charitable, rich, supported by his own people and courageous.
- Aspected by Venus: highly learned, a royal employee or messenger who honours friendship, with a remark about base company.
- Aspected by Saturn: progressive-minded, modest, successful in what he starts, and wealthy in money and clothes.
The Bhrigu Sutras commentary notes that Mercury is never more than 28 degrees from the Sun and Venus never more than 48. A planet seven signs away is at least 150 degrees off, so neither the Sun nor Venus can ever stand in the 7th sign from Mercury, and their lines describe a configuration the sky does not produce. The pattern is the useful part: the same sign reads well or badly depending on what aspects it, so the sign line is only half of Saravali's verdict. Which of these lines applies to a given chart is a matter of counting houses, as the worked example below shows.
Saravali Ch. 45 on the dignity itself
Saravali Ch. 45, "Effects of Planetary Dignities", adds a short line for each class of dignity, independent of the sign. For Mercury exalted (Sl. 1-4) it gives intelligent, foremost among his family and a skilful speaker, in Moolatrikona (Sl. 5-7) it gives jocular and successful and in its own sign (Sl. 8-11) it gives a sweet speaker and learned. These are the text's statements; this app reports them and does not turn them into predictions.
BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras
BPHS does not give a sign-by-sign line for Mercury. What it says about this placement comes through rules. Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2: Mercury in its own or exaltation sign, in a Kendra from the Lagna, gives Bhadra Yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas (Panchamahapurusha). So Mercury in Virgo forms it only for the Lagnas that put Virgo in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house; the table further down lists them. For the other Lagnas the dignity is the same and the yoga is absent. The Mercury section of the Bhrigu Sutras commentary gives the same three-way split of Virgo (the first 15 degrees exaltation, 16 to 20 Mooltrikona, the rest Swakshetra), the whole of Gemini as Swakshetra, and the same friends (Sun, Venus), enemy (Moon) and neutrals (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn). The Bhrigu Sutras proper is arranged by house rather than by sign, so it has no line for Mercury in Virgo as such.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: Mercury's exaltation is Virgo and its debilitation Pisces, deepest at 15 degrees (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50, Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35-36, the Bhrigu Sutras commentary).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali weighs it by the aspecting planet (Ch. 26 Sl. 37-42); BPHS by rules such as the Kendra test for Bhadra Yoga.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for Mercury in Virgo as such. Of the texts used here, Saravali is the only one that writes one.
- Different numbers: the Bhrigu Sutras commentary treats Mercury as combust within 8 and a half degrees of the Sun; this engine uses 14 degrees (12 when retrograde).
- Different scales: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 puts Moolatrikona a step below exaltation; this engine gives both the same sthana strength.
What Mercury rules from each Lagna, with Mercury in Virgo
Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. With whole-sign houses the table below is mechanical: the second column is where Virgo falls, the third and fourth are the houses Mercury rules. The planned house pages, such as Mercury in the 1st house and Mercury in the 10th house, take each house further.
| Lagna | House of Mercury (Virgo) | Mercury rules | Mercury also rules | Bhadra Yoga by BPHS Ch. 75 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 6th | 3rd (Gemini) | 6th (Virgo) | No |
| Taurus | 5th | 2nd (Gemini) | 5th (Virgo) | No |
| Gemini | 4th | 1st (Gemini) | 4th (Virgo) | Yes |
| Cancer | 3rd | 12th (Gemini) | 3rd (Virgo) | No |
| Leo | 2nd | 11th (Gemini) | 2nd (Virgo) | No |
| Virgo | 1st | 10th (Gemini) | 1st (Virgo) | Yes |
| Libra | 12th | 9th (Gemini) | 12th (Virgo) | No |
| Scorpio | 11th | 8th (Gemini) | 11th (Virgo) | No |
| Sagittarius | 10th | 7th (Gemini) | 10th (Virgo) | Yes |
| Capricorn | 9th | 6th (Gemini) | 9th (Virgo) | No |
| Aquarius | 8th | 5th (Gemini) | 8th (Virgo) | No |
| Pisces | 7th | 4th (Gemini) | 7th (Virgo) | Yes |
Two groups of rows are worth singling out. For Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn rising, Virgo is a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th). For Aries, Libra and Aquarius rising, it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th), and the engine's planet table names that house type alongside the dignity. Neither fact changes the dignity label; both change how the planet is read.
Worked example: 22 September 1985, 09:53 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine and found by a deterministic search. Libra rises at 23.23 degrees. Mercury is at 4.93 degrees of Virgo, in Uttara Phalguni pada 3, in the 12th house, not retrograde and combust. The engine labels it Exalted. Anyone can re-enter the date, time and place in the Birth Chart calculator and see the same chart.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Virgo 5.46 | Uttara Phalguni (3) | 12 | Enemy sign |
| Moon | Sagittarius 14.65 | Purva Ashadha (1) | 3 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Leo 14.03 | Purva Phalguni (1) | 11 | Friendly sign |
| Mercury | Virgo 4.93, combust | Uttara Phalguni (3) | 12 | Exalted |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 13.71, retrograde | Shravana (2) | 4 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Leo 6.43 | Magha (2) | 11 | Neutral |
| Saturn | Scorpio 0.41 | Vishakha (4) | 2 | Neutral |
| Rahu | Aries 17.51, retrograde | Bharani (2) | 7 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 17.51, retrograde | Swati (4) | 1 | Neutral |
Why Exalted. At 4.93 degrees Mercury falls in the 0 to 15 degree band, and because the label comes from Mercury's own dignity table, no other planet's position enters into it.
Lordship. For a Libra Lagna, Gemini is the 9th house and Virgo the 12th, so Mercury rules the 9th and the 12th and sits in the 12th, one of the two houses it rules. The 12th is not a Kendra, so by BPHS Ch. 75 there is no Bhadra Yoga despite the dignity. The 12th is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th), which the engine notes beside the dignity.
Aspects. Saravali's aspect lines need a planet whose drishti reaches Virgo. Using the rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - Jupiter in the 4th aspects the 12th. So this Saravali line applies alongside the sign line: for Jupiter, a king's minister, excellent, handsome, charitable, rich, supported by his own people and courageous. Where lines pull in different directions, the text does not say which wins, and this page does not decide it.
Company. Sun (5.46 degrees) shares Virgo with Mercury. Saravali's Ch. 26 sign and aspect lines cover aspects, not planets in the same sign, so this page adds no reading of its own for the conjunction. Combustion. Mercury is flagged combust: it is within 14 degrees of the Sun, the orb astrologyEngine.js uses for Mercury (14 direct, 12 retrograde). The engine's planet-strength reading sets the position component to zero for a combust planet, following its source's line that a planet in combustion has no strength; the sign label itself is unchanged. The term has its own entry: combustion.
The rest of the chart. Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn. That is a reminder that one placement describes one part of a chart, and the reading of Mercury in Virgo is never the reading of the whole.
How often Mercury is in Virgo
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mercury was in Virgo in 259 of them, 8.6 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary notes that Mercury is never more than 28 degrees from the Sun, so Mercury moves through the signs roughly alongside the Sun over each year, with retrograde loops that can hold it in one sign for longer. The share therefore moves with which parts of the year the sample happens to cover.
Checking Mercury in Virgo in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Mercury is in Virgo and note its degree against the bands above.
- Note the house Virgo occupies and the houses Gemini and Virgo occupy: those are where Mercury sits and what it rules.
- The label will not move with other planets, so go straight to the aspects.
- If Virgo is your 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, check the Yogas list for Bhadra Yoga.
- List the planets that aspect Virgo: anything in the 7th sign from it, Mars when the sign is 4th or 8th from Mars, Jupiter when it is 5th or 9th from Jupiter, Saturn when it is 3rd or 10th from Saturn. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 37-42 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, the ninth-part chart with the Navamsa calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Mercury Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Mercury exalted in Virgo?
- Yes, but only to 15 degrees in this engine. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 makes the first 15 degrees of Virgo the exaltation zone, the next 5 Moolatrikona and the last 10 own sign, and the engine follows that exactly.
- Does the degree of Mercury in Virgo matter?
- For the label, yes: 0 to 15 degrees reads Exalted, 15 to 20 degrees reads Moolatrikona, 20 to 30 degrees reads Own sign. The degree also sets the nakshatra and pada.
- Can another planet change the dignity of Mercury in Virgo?
- No. The label comes from Mercury's own dignity table, so the engine never reaches the relationship test. Other planets change the reading through aspect, as in Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 37-42, but not the label.
- Does Mercury in Virgo give Bhadra Yoga?
- Only when Virgo is a Kendra from the Lagna, which happens for Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces Lagnas (BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2).
- Which nakshatras can Mercury occupy in Virgo?
- Uttara Phalguni (padas 2, 3, 4), Hasta (padas 1, 2, 3, 4) and Chitra (padas 1, 2), per this engine's nakshatra table.
- How common is Mercury in Virgo?
- In this app's sample it was in Virgo in 259 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.6 per cent. That describes the sky in the sample, not a share of people.
