In short
Mercury in Gemini is Mercury in its own sign, and this engine gives it that label at every degree. Saravali Ch. 26 reads it as able speech, learning, poetry and independence, then changes the verdict according to which planet aspects it. The house Gemini occupies from your Lagna decides what Mercury rules and where it acts.
Mercury in Gemini is Mercury in one of its own signs, and this engine labels it Own sign across the whole sign. That label is only the starting point. What the placement does in a chart is a separate question, answered by the house Gemini occupies from your Lagna, the houses Mercury rules from there, and the planets that aspect it. This page sets out each of those, with the classical statement for this exact combination.
It covers the combination only. For Mercury as a graha - its significations, strength and dashas - start with Mercury in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its lord, its nakshatras and what a rising Gemini means - see Gemini, Mithuna Rashi. What follows is a map of rules and of what the texts say, not a forecast about anyone.
Mercury in Gemini: dignity, and how this app decides it
Gemini is one of the two signs Mercury rules, the other being Virgo. A planet in its own sign is Swakshetra. Mercury's Moolatrikona lies in Virgo, not here, so Gemini is own sign from 0 to 30 degrees.
| Degrees of Gemini | Label in this engine (no chart) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Own sign | One half |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relationship between the planet and the sign's lord. For Mercury in Gemini the own-sign test decides it at every degree of the sign, so the label is Own sign from 0 to 30 and no other planet's position can change it.
The scoring is the engine's, not the text's. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 grades the results - exaltation full, Moolatrikona three quarters, own sign half, a friend's sign a quarter, a neutral's an eighth, an enemy's sign or debilitation nil. The engine gives Exalted and Moolatrikona a sthana strength of 10, Own sign 7.5, Friendly sign 6.25, Neutral 5, and Enemy sign and Debilitated 0. The order is the same; the gaps between the steps are not. The general idea is under dignity. Neighbouring placements show the contrast: Mercury in Taurus and Mercury in Cancer, the exaltation case Mercury in Virgo, and the debilitation case Mercury in Pisces.
The nakshatras Mercury moves through in Gemini
Gemini holds padas 3, 4 of Mrigashira, all four padas of Ardra and padas 1, 2, 3 of Punarvasu. Each pada is 3 degrees 20 minutes, so the spans below follow from the pada count. The dignity label is the same in all of them; the nakshatra adds its own lord and pada to the reading, which the nakshatra pages take up: Mrigashira, Ardra and Punarvasu.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Gemini | Span within Gemini | Mercury's label there (no chart) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mrigashira | 3, 4 | 0 degrees to 6 degrees 40 minutes | Own sign |
| Ardra | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 6 degrees 40 minutes to 20 degrees | Own sign |
| Punarvasu | 1, 2, 3 | 20 degrees to 30 degrees | Own sign |
What the classical texts say about Mercury in Gemini
Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 5-6
In Gemini Saravali gives an auspicious appearance, sweet and able speech, affluence and honour, a fondness for argument, learning in the Vedas and Sastras, poetry, independence, generosity, competence in work, and many sons and friends. The same line says the native gives up his own comfort and mentions two marriages; those are the text's statements.
The lines on either side make the contrast clear. For Taurus (Sl. 3-4) the chapter gives skill, honestly earned wealth and sweet speech; for Cancer (Sl. 7-8) it gives learning and poetry, with restlessness and friction with relatives. For Gemini the short form is able speech, learning, poetry and independence. See Mercury in Taurus and Mercury in Cancer for those lines in full.
Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 37-42: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads Mercury in Gemini or Virgo, its own signs, under the aspect of each other planet. These lines often change the verdict more than the sign line does, because they are where the chapter turns praise into censure or the reverse. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Sun: truthful, fortunate, dear to the king, a lord himself, polite and liked by all.
- Aspected by the Moon: sweet-natured but garrulous and quarrelsome, keen on learning, firm, and successful in undertakings.
- Aspected by Mars: an injured body and uncleanliness, yet a genius in the king's service and dear to him.
- Aspected by Jupiter: a king's minister, excellent, handsome, charitable, rich, supported by his own people and courageous.
- Aspected by Venus: highly learned, a royal employee or messenger who honours friendship, with a remark about base company.
- Aspected by Saturn: progressive-minded, modest, successful in what he starts, and wealthy in money and clothes.
The Bhrigu Sutras commentary notes that Mercury is never more than 28 degrees from the Sun and Venus never more than 48. A planet seven signs away is at least 150 degrees off, so neither the Sun nor Venus can ever stand in the 7th sign from Mercury, and their lines describe a configuration the sky does not produce. The pattern is the useful part: the same sign reads well or badly depending on what aspects it, so the sign line is only half of Saravali's verdict. Which of these lines applies to a given chart is a matter of counting houses, as the worked example below shows.
Saravali Ch. 45 on the dignity itself
Saravali Ch. 45, "Effects of Planetary Dignities", adds a short line for each class of dignity, independent of the sign. For Mercury in its own sign (Sl. 8-11) it gives a sweet speaker and learned. These are the text's statements; this app reports them and does not turn them into predictions.
BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras
BPHS does not give a sign-by-sign line for Mercury. What it says about this placement comes through rules. Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2: Mercury in its own or exaltation sign, in a Kendra from the Lagna, gives Bhadra Yoga, one of the five Mahapurusha yogas (Panchamahapurusha). So Mercury in Gemini forms it only for the Lagnas that put Gemini in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house; the table further down lists them. For the other Lagnas the dignity is the same and the yoga is absent. The Mercury section of the Bhrigu Sutras commentary gives the same three-way split of Virgo (the first 15 degrees exaltation, 16 to 20 Mooltrikona, the rest Swakshetra), the whole of Gemini as Swakshetra, and the same friends (Sun, Venus), enemy (Moon) and neutrals (Mars, Jupiter, Saturn). The Bhrigu Sutras proper is arranged by house rather than by sign, so it has no line for Mercury in Gemini as such.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: Mercury's exaltation is Virgo and its debilitation Pisces, deepest at 15 degrees (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50, Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35-36, the Bhrigu Sutras commentary).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali weighs it by the aspecting planet (Ch. 26 Sl. 37-42); BPHS by rules such as the Kendra test for Bhadra Yoga.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for Mercury in Gemini as such. Of the texts used here, Saravali is the only one that writes one.
- Different numbers: the Bhrigu Sutras commentary treats Mercury as combust within 8 and a half degrees of the Sun; this engine uses 14 degrees (12 when retrograde).
- Different scales: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 puts Moolatrikona a step below exaltation; this engine gives both the same sthana strength.
What Mercury rules from each Lagna, with Mercury in Gemini
Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. With whole-sign houses the table below is mechanical: the second column is where Gemini falls, the third and fourth are the houses Mercury rules. The planned house pages, such as Mercury in the 1st house and Mercury in the 10th house, take each house further.
| Lagna | House of Mercury (Gemini) | Mercury rules | Mercury also rules | Bhadra Yoga by BPHS Ch. 75 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 3rd | 3rd (Gemini) | 6th (Virgo) | No |
| Taurus | 2nd | 2nd (Gemini) | 5th (Virgo) | No |
| Gemini | 1st | 1st (Gemini) | 4th (Virgo) | Yes |
| Cancer | 12th | 12th (Gemini) | 3rd (Virgo) | No |
| Leo | 11th | 11th (Gemini) | 2nd (Virgo) | No |
| Virgo | 10th | 10th (Gemini) | 1st (Virgo) | Yes |
| Libra | 9th | 9th (Gemini) | 12th (Virgo) | No |
| Scorpio | 8th | 8th (Gemini) | 11th (Virgo) | No |
| Sagittarius | 7th | 7th (Gemini) | 10th (Virgo) | Yes |
| Capricorn | 6th | 6th (Gemini) | 9th (Virgo) | No |
| Aquarius | 5th | 5th (Gemini) | 8th (Virgo) | No |
| Pisces | 4th | 4th (Gemini) | 7th (Virgo) | Yes |
Two groups of rows are worth singling out. For Gemini, Libra and Aquarius rising, Gemini is a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th). For Cancer, Scorpio and Capricorn rising, it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th), and the engine's planet table names that house type alongside the dignity. Neither fact changes the dignity label; both change how the planet is read.
Worked example: 14 June 1985, 05:06 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine and found by a deterministic search. Taurus rises at 24.15 degrees. Mercury is at 7.03 degrees of Gemini, in Ardra pada 1, in the 2nd house, not retrograde and combust. The engine labels it Own sign. Anyone can re-enter the date, time and place in the Birth Chart calculator and see the same chart.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Taurus 29.22 | Mrigashira (2) | 1 | Neutral |
| Moon | Aries 9 | Ashwini (3) | 12 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Gemini 9.39, combust | Ardra (1) | 2 | Enemy sign |
| Mercury | Gemini 7.03, combust | Ardra (1) | 2 | Own sign |
| Jupiter | Capricorn 23.23, retrograde | Shravana (4) | 9 | Debilitated |
| Venus | Aries 13.49 | Bharani (1) | 12 | Friendly sign |
| Saturn | Libra 29.13, retrograde | Vishakha (3) | 6 | Exalted |
| Rahu | Aries 22.82, retrograde | Bharani (3) | 12 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Libra 22.82, retrograde | Vishakha (1) | 6 | Neutral |
Why Own sign. At 7.03 degrees Mercury falls in the 0 to 30 degree band, and because the label comes from Mercury's own dignity table, no other planet's position enters into it.
Lordship. For a Taurus Lagna, Gemini is the 2nd house and Virgo the 5th, so Mercury rules the 2nd and the 5th and sits in the 2nd, one of the two houses it rules. The 2nd is not a Kendra, so by BPHS Ch. 75 there is no Bhadra Yoga despite the dignity.
Aspects. Saravali's aspect lines need a planet whose drishti reaches Gemini. Using the rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - none of the other six grahas aspects the 2nd house here. So none of the Sl. 37-42 lines applies to this chart, and only the bare sign line of Sl. 5-6 does. That is a common outcome, and it is why the aspects are counted before the aspect lines are quoted.
Company. Mars (9.39 degrees) shares Gemini with Mercury. Saravali's Ch. 26 sign and aspect lines cover aspects, not planets in the same sign, so this page adds no reading of its own for the conjunction. Combustion. Mercury is flagged combust: it is within 14 degrees of the Sun, the orb astrologyEngine.js uses for Mercury (14 direct, 12 retrograde). The engine's planet-strength reading sets the position component to zero for a combust planet, following its source's line that a planet in combustion has no strength; the sign label itself is unchanged. The term has its own entry: combustion.
The rest of the chart. Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn and Saturn is exalted in Libra. That is a reminder that one placement describes one part of a chart, and the reading of Mercury in Gemini is never the reading of the whole.
How often Mercury is in Gemini
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Mercury was in Gemini in 234 of them, 7.8 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary notes that Mercury is never more than 28 degrees from the Sun, so Mercury moves through the signs roughly alongside the Sun over each year, with retrograde loops that can hold it in one sign for longer. The share therefore moves with which parts of the year the sample happens to cover.
Checking Mercury in Gemini in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Mercury is in Gemini and note the label the planet table gives it.
- Note the house Gemini occupies and the houses Gemini and Virgo occupy: those are where Mercury sits and what it rules.
- The label will not move with other planets, so go straight to the aspects.
- If Gemini is your 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house, check the Yogas list for Bhadra Yoga.
- List the planets that aspect Gemini: anything in the 7th sign from it, Mars when the sign is 4th or 8th from Mars, Jupiter when it is 5th or 9th from Jupiter, Saturn when it is 3rd or 10th from Saturn. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 37-42 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, the ninth-part chart with the Navamsa calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Mercury Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Mercury exalted or debilitated in Gemini?
- Neither. Mercury is exalted in Virgo and debilitated in Pisces. In Gemini it is in its own sign. See Mercury in Virgo.
- Does the degree of Mercury in Gemini matter?
- Not for the label, which is the same at every degree of Gemini. The degree still sets the nakshatra and pada, and how close Mercury is to the Sun for combustion.
- Can another planet change the dignity of Mercury in Gemini?
- No. The label comes from Mercury's own dignity table, so the engine never reaches the relationship test. Other planets change the reading through aspect, as in Saravali Ch. 26 Sl. 37-42, but not the label.
- Does Mercury in Gemini give Bhadra Yoga?
- Only when Gemini is a Kendra from the Lagna, which happens for Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces Lagnas (BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2).
- Which nakshatras can Mercury occupy in Gemini?
- Mrigashira (padas 3, 4), Ardra (padas 1, 2, 3, 4) and Punarvasu (padas 1, 2, 3), per this engine's nakshatra table.
- How common is Mercury in Gemini?
- In this app's sample it was in Gemini in 234 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 7.8 per cent. That describes the sky in the sample, not a share of people.
