The Moon in Cancer (Karka): how this app's engine decides its dignity, the nakshatras it crosses, what Saravali Ch. 23 and BPHS say, the houses it rules from each Lagna, and a fully worked chart.

In short

The Moon in Cancer is the Moon in its own sign, the only sign it rules. Saravali Ch. 23 gives it one descriptive line and six aspect lines that change the reading. The house Cancer occupies from your Lagna, and the house Cancer makes, decide where it works.

The Moon in Cancer is the Moon in a sign ruled by Moon. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 makes the Moon the mind, and the sign it occupies at birth is the moon sign, or Janma Rashi - the sign this app counts transits and Sade Sati from. So this one placement is read twice: as a planet in a sign, with a dignity and a classical description, and as the reference point for much of the rest of the chart. What it does in a given chart depends on the house Cancer occupies, the house the Moon rules from your Lagna, and the planets that aspect it.

This page covers only the combination. For the Moon as a graha - significations, strength, phases and its Mahadasha - start with the Moon in Vedic astrology. For the sign - its element, its nakshatras and what it means rising - see Cancer, Karka Rashi. The short definition of the moon sign itself is under moon sign. This page is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.

Moon in Cancer: dignity, and how this app decides it

The neighbouring placements are Moon in Gemini and Moon in Leo; the dignity terms used below are collected under dignity.

Cancer is the Moon's only own sign. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 puts the Moon's exaltation in Taurus (deepest at 3 degrees) and its debilitation in Scorpio, the 7th sign from Taurus. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 places the Moon's Mooltrikon in Taurus too, after its first 3 degrees, so Cancer carries no Moolatrikona band for the Moon. The Moon chapter of Bhrigu Sutras says it directly: the whole of Cancer is her swakshetra. See Swakshetra (own sign).

The two higher dignities are on their own pages: Moon in Taurus (exaltation and Moolatrikona) and, for the debilitation sign, Moon in Scorpio.

How the engine decides

dignityOf runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the friendship between the planet and the sign's lord. A Moon in Cancer fails the first three and is caught by the own-sign test at every degree. Because the Moon is itself the lord of Cancer, the friendship test is never reached, so no other planet's position in your chart can change the label. The engine gives Own sign a score of 1 and a sthana strength of 7.5, against 2 and 10 for exaltation. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 ranks the same step as half the good effects.

The nakshatras the Moon moves through in Cancer

Cancer holds pada 4 of Punarvasu, all four padas of Pushya and all four padas of Ashlesha. For the Moon the nakshatra matters especially: the birth Moon's nakshatra sets the first Mahadasha of the Vimshottari sequence, whose lord this engine takes from the nakshatra's place in the cycle of nine. So a Moon in Cancer can open with any of three different Mahadashas, depending on its degree. The nakshatra pages go further: Punarvasu, Pushya and Ashlesha.

What the classical texts say about the Moon in Cancer

Saravali Ch. 23 Sl. 23

Saravali Ch. 23, "Effects of the Moon in Various Rasis", gives each sign one descriptive line for the Moon and then six lines for the Moon in that sign aspected by each other planet. In paraphrase, the Cancer line lists fortune, valour, a home, friends, journeys, knowledge of astrology, gratitude, truthfulness, a minister's rank, life abroad, a love of water and flowers, and an interest in building houses and wells. The prominent neck and hairy body it mentions are description, not medical advice. It is a catalogue of qualities, not a single verdict.

Saravali Ch. 23 Sl. 24-29: the aspect lines

These six lines are where the reading turns. In paraphrase:

  • Aspected by the Sun: in royal service but not rich - a letter-bearer or a guard of forts, a security officer in the translator's gloss.
  • Aspected by Mars: valorous and skilled at work, but with a bodily deformity and an adverse effect for the mother, in the text's words.
  • Aspected by Mercury: spirited, with political wisdom, wealth, spouse and children, a king's minister and happy.
  • Aspected by Jupiter: a king with royal qualities, happy, with a good spouse, well behaved, modest and valorous.
  • Aspected by Venus: money, gold, spouse, robes and jewels, splendour, and leadership among courtesans.
  • Aspected by Saturn: a wandering disposition, misery, poverty, untruthfulness and meanness.

Jupiter's aspect gives the strongest line of the six - in Cancer, Jupiter's exaltation sign - and Mercury's the next. The Sun's line grants service without wealth, and Saturn's is the harshest. Even in its own sign the Moon's reading in Saravali is settled as much by the aspecting planet as by the sign.

When Saravali says the results come to pass

Saravali closes the chapter with a condition (Ch. 23 Sl. 88): the effects described come to pass fully only when the lord of the Moon sign, the Moon sign itself and the Moon are all strong, and they vary with the dignities of the dispositor and of the aspecting planet. For a Moon in Cancer the dispositor is Moon, so the Moon is its own dispositor and the first and third conditions coincide. The same book's chapter on dignities adds a general line. Ch. 45 Sl. 8-11 says the Moon in its own sign makes one virtuously disposed, very intelligent and beautiful.

BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras

BPHS supplies the dignities, relationships and ratios used above (Ch. 3 Sl. 49-60). A search of the BPHS file found no sign-by-sign description of the Moon of the kind Saravali gives, so for the sign itself Saravali is the only text in the corpus with a character line.

Bhrigu Sutras' Moon chapter states plainly that "the whole of Cancer is her swakshetra". Its commentary on the Moon in the 1st house names Cancer among the three signs (with Aries and Taurus) in which a rising Moon gives learning, wealth, happiness and soft speech, and the commentator agrees for Cancer. A Moon in Cancer in the 1st means a Cancer Lagna, so the Moon is then also the Lagna lord.

How the sign changes the houses the Moon rules and sits in

The Moon rules one sign, Cancer. Counting whole-sign houses, the table gives where Cancer and Cancer fall from each Lagna, and the role BPHS Ch. 34 (Sl. 19-44) gives the Moon there, as coded in this app's Yoga Karaka table. The house pages - for example Moon in the 1st house, Moon in the 4th house and Moon in the 10th house - go further.

In Cancer the two columns always match, because the Moon sits in the one house it rules. BPHS Ch. 34's roles turn only on lordship, not on the sign the Moon is in.

Worked example: 4 September 2067, 16:15 IST, New Delhi

An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Capricorn rises at 3.42 degrees. The Moon is at 0.14 degrees of Cancer, in Punarvasu pada 4, in the 7th house, not combust, and labelled Own sign. The Moon is never retrograde, and the engine marks it combust only within 12 degrees of the Sun.

Dignity. At 0.14 degrees the engine labels the Moon Own sign. Because the Moon rules Cancer, nothing else in this chart could change that label.

Lordship. With Capricorn rising, Cancer is the 7th house, so the Moon is the lord of the 7th sitting in it. In the engine's BPHS Ch. 34 table for a Capricorn Lagna, the Moon is listed as functional malefic.

Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies (every graha aspects the 7th sign from itself; Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th, as in SPECIAL_DRISHTI in relationshipIntelligenceEngine.js), none of the six other grahas aspects Cancer in this chart. So none of the Saravali Ch. 23 Sl. 24-29 lines applies, and only the bare sign line does.

Company. No other graha shares Cancer with the Moon in this chart. The Moon's nakshatra, Punarvasu, is ruled by Jupiter in the Vimshottari cycle, so this chart opens in a Jupiter Mahadasha.

How often the Moon is in Cancer

In this app's sample the Moon was in Cancer in 0 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (0 per cent). That figure needs a warning. The sample steps 9 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes from one moment to the next. Bhrigu Sutras gives the Moon's round of the zodiac as 27 days, 7 hours and 43 minutes, so one step moves the Moon about four signs and successive samples keep landing in the same three signs, four apart. The table shows all twelve signs from the same run.

Signs four apartMoon in each sign, of 3,000 sampled moments
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius307, 312, 301

Gemini, Libra, Aquarius274, 277, 267
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces0, 0, 0
engine-facts.mjs moon-in-<sign> for all twelve signs, run 2026-10-14.

So for the Moon the sample says more about the sampling grid than about the sky. A count of zero does not mean the placement is rare: it means this particular walk never landed on it. Over any real month the Moon passes through every sign; the engine's own transit table gives it about 2.25 days in each.

Checking the Moon in Cancer in your own chart

  1. Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator and confirm the Moon is in Cancer. Note its degree and nakshatra.
  2. The label does not depend on the degree or on any other planet, so move straight to the houses.
  3. Note the house Cancer occupies and the house Cancer occupies: those are where the Moon sits and what it rules.
  4. List any graha in the 7th sign from Cancer (Capricorn), Mars in the 4th or 8th from it, Jupiter in the 5th or 9th, Saturn in the 3rd or 10th. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 23 Sl. 24-29 line into play.
  5. For timing, see the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Moon Mahadasha page; for Saturn's transit around the moon sign, Sade Sati.

What this page does not do

It reports the texts and this app's computation. It predicts no events; bodily or family remarks are the texts' statements, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras.

Is the Moon strong in Cancer?
Cancer is its own sign, which BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 ranks at half the good effects, below exaltation (Taurus) and Moolatrikona. The engine labels it Own sign at every degree.
Can another planet change the Moon's dignity in Cancer?
No. The label is decided before the friendship test is reached, so no other planet's position changes it. Other planets change the reading through aspect, as in Saravali Ch. 23 Sl. 24-29.
What does Saravali say about the Moon in Cancer?
Ch. 23 Sl. 23 gives the sign line and Sl. 24-29 six aspect lines. Jupiter's aspect gives the strongest line of the six - in Cancer, Jupiter's exaltation sign - and Mercury's the next.
Is the Moon in Cancer the same as a Cancer moon sign?
Yes. The sign the Moon occupies at birth is the moon sign, or Janma Rashi. The Moon Sign calculator finds it, and this app counts transits and Sade Sati from it.
How common is the Moon in Cancer?
In this app's sample it was in Cancer in 0 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060. That sample steps about four signs of Moon motion at a time, so the figure reflects the grid, not the sky; the Moon spends about 2.25 days in each sign every month.
