Moon in Scorpio: debilitation, and what the texts read into it

The Moon in Scorpio is the Moon in a sign ruled by Mars. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 makes the Moon the mind, and the sign it occupies at birth is the moon sign, or Janma Rashi - the sign this app counts transits and Sade Sati from. Moon in Scorpio: dignity, and how this app decides it

Scorpio is the Moon's debilitation sign. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50 gives the Moon's exaltation in Taurus, deepest at 3 degrees, and puts its debilitation in the 7th sign from there, with the deepest fall at the same degree: 3 degrees of Scorpio. The Moon chapter of Bhrigu Sutras gives the same sign and the same lowest point. See neecha (debilitation).

The opposite case is Moon in Taurus, and the Moon's own sign is covered on Moon in Cancer. Mars, the lord of Scorpio, is a neutral to the Moon by Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 - but in this sign that never matters to the label, as the next paragraph explains.

How the engine decides

dignityOf runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the friendship with the sign's lord. A Moon anywhere in Scorpio is caught by the debilitation test, so it is labelled Debilitated at every degree, with a score of -2 and a sthana strength of 0. The deep-fall degree, 3, is not used by the label; it is used elsewhere in the engine, by the planetary-rays measure (Saravali Ch. 36), which scores each graha by its distance from that exact point. The engine does not compute any cancellation of debilitation, so this page does not describe one.

The nakshatras the Moon moves through in Scorpio

Scorpio holds pada 4 of Vishakha, all four padas of Anuradha and all four padas of Jyeshtha. For the Moon the nakshatra matters especially: the birth Moon's nakshatra sets the first Mahadasha of the Vimshottari sequence, whose lord this engine takes from the nakshatra's place in the cycle of nine. What the classical texts say about the Moon in Scorpio

Saravali Ch. 23 Sl. 51

Saravali Ch. 23, "Effects of the Moon in Various Rasis", gives each sign one descriptive line for the Moon and then six lines for the Moon in that sign aspected by each other planet. In paraphrase, the Scorpio line lists industry, skill, valour and abundance, alongside miserliness, harshness in action, estrangement from relatives and losses through the anger of authority. Its notes on childhood illness, thighs, chin, nails, eyes, abdomen and head are physical description and the text's claims, not medical advice. It is a catalogue of qualities, not a single verdict.

Saravali Ch. 23 Sl. 52-57: the aspect lines

These six lines are where the reading turns. In paraphrase:

• Aspected by the Sun: learned and rich but not sociable, of a wandering nature, and not happy.
• Aspected by Mars: incomparable courage, equal to a king, wealthy, valorous, unbeaten in conflict and a hearty eater.
• Aspected by Mercury: hard in speech and tricky, yet an expert singer; the text adds that twins may be born.
• Aspected by Jupiter: devoted to duty, wealthy and beautiful, though partial towards people.
• Aspected by Venus: highly intelligent, fortunate, with riches, vehicles and beauty.
• Aspected by Saturn: poor, untruthful, unwell and a tale-bearer, with sons the text calls base.

In the Moon's debilitation sign Saravali still gives three clearly good aspect lines. The best is Mars's - Mars being the lord of Scorpio - followed by Venus and Jupiter. Saturn's is the poorest. So the classical reading of a debilitated Moon is not uniform: the dispositor's aspect, in this text, reverses much of the sign line.

When Saravali says the results come to pass

Saravali closes the chapter with a condition (Ch. 23 Sl. 88): the effects described come to pass fully only when the lord of the Moon sign, the Moon sign itself and the Moon are all strong, and they vary with the dignities of the dispositor and of the aspecting planet. For a Moon in Scorpio the dispositor is Mars, so Mars's own condition is part of the reading. The same book's chapter on dignities adds a general line. Ch. 45 Sl. 15-18 says a debilitated Moon makes one not very meritorious in action, sickly and unfortunate - the text's claim, not medical advice, and to be weighed against the aspect lines above, which read three of the six aspects on this Moon favourably.

BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras

BPHS supplies the dignities, relationships and ratios used above (Ch. 3 Sl. 49-60). A search of the BPHS file found no sign-by-sign description of the Moon of the kind Saravali gives, so for the sign itself Saravali is the only text in the corpus with a character line.

Bhrigu Sutras' Moon chapter gives Scorpio as the debilitation sign and 3 degrees as the lowest point. Its commentary on the Moon in the 1st house goes further than the author: it argues that a Moon rising in Scorpio should give good results, because the Moon is then the lord of the 9th sitting in the Ascendant. Here a commentator puts lordship ahead of debilitation, which is worth knowing before reading the sign label as a verdict.

How the sign changes the houses the Moon rules and sits in

The Moon rules one sign, Cancer. Counting whole-sign houses, the table gives where Scorpio and Cancer fall from each Lagna, and the role BPHS Ch. 34 (Sl. 19-44) gives the Moon there, as coded in this app's Yoga Karaka table. In Scorpio the Moon sits in the 5th sign counted from its own sign, so in every row the house it occupies is the 5th from the house it rules. BPHS Ch. 34's roles turn only on lordship, not on the sign the Moon is in.

Worked example: 19 February 2063, 20:01 IST, New Delhi

An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Virgo rises at 0.46 degrees. The Moon is at 0.05 degrees of Scorpio, in Vishakha pada 4, in the 3rd house, not combust, and labelled Debilitated. The Moon is never retrograde, and the engine marks it combust only within 12 degrees of the Sun.

Dignity. At 0.05 degrees the engine labels the Moon Debilitated. Every degree of Scorpio gives the same label, so nothing else in this chart could change it.

Lordship. With Virgo rising, Scorpio is the 3rd house and Cancer, the Moon's own sign, is the 11th, so the Moon here is the lord of the 11th sitting in the 3rd. In the engine's BPHS Ch. 34 table for a Virgo Lagna, the Moon is listed as functional malefic.

Aspects. Using the aspect rule this engine applies (every graha aspects the 7th sign from itself; Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th, as in SPECIAL_DRISHTI in relationshipIntelligenceEngine.js), none of the six other grahas aspects Scorpio in this chart. So none of the Saravali Ch. 23 Sl. 52-57 lines applies, and only the bare sign line does.

How often the Moon is in Scorpio

In this app's sample the Moon was in Scorpio in 0 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060 (0 per cent). That figure needs a warning. The sample steps 9 days, 2 hours and 37 minutes from one moment to the next. Bhrigu Sutras gives the Moon's round of the zodiac as 27 days, 7 hours and 43 minutes, so one step moves the Moon about four signs and successive samples keep landing in the same three signs, four apart. The table shows all twelve signs from the same run.

So for the Moon the sample says more about the sampling grid than about the sky. A count of zero does not mean the placement is rare: it means this particular walk never landed on it. Is the Moon debilitated in Scorpio?

Yes, at every degree, with the deepest fall at 3 degrees (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50). The engine labels it Debilitated throughout. Saravali still reads three of the six aspects on a Scorpio Moon favourably.
