In short
In this app a 5 is in harmony with 1, 3, 5, 6 and 9, one of the two longest rows in the table, and that row sets the match label. Two books independently name 1, 3 and 7 as the 5's best partners, while a third calls the 3 an enemy. The anti-combination table lists no partner for 5 at all.
A Mulank 5 is anyone born on the 5th, 14th or 23rd of a month. Like every Mulank from 5 to 9, it has only three birth days in a month, because no day after the 23rd reduces to 5. In this app the 5 is ruled by Mercury and titled "The Explorer". Its compatibility is a set of lookups in printed tables; this page lays out each one. For the number on its own, read Number 5 in numerology; for the numbers compared, Mulank and Bhagyank.
How number 5 compatibility is worked out
The label comes from numerologyMatch(). Row 5 of the harmony table is 1, 3, 5, 6 and 9: five numbers, where most rows have four. Every one of them lists 5 back, so the lookup is the same in either direction.
- Mulank: is the partner's Mulank 1, 3, 5, 6 or 9?
- Bhagyank: is the partner's Bhagyank in the row of the 5's own Bhagyank? A master Bhagyank is read at its root, 11 as 2, 22 as 4, 33 as 6, for this lookup only.
- Two matches give "Strong", one "Workable", none "Needs effort". The note printed with it reflects the Mulank lookup alone.
The longer row shows up in the Numerology Profile too. A Mulank 5 gets five favourable numbers (1, 3, 5, 6, 9) and seventeen favourable dates: 1, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 18, 19, 21, 23, 24, 27, 28 and 30. The Mulanks 1 to 4 get fourteen each. The label itself appears in the numerology panel of the match tool and the Love Compatibility calculator.
Number 5 against all nine numbers
Four more readings sit beside the label on the compatibility feature. Where a book is one-way, both directions are shown.
| Partner | App harmony | AVN friend / enemy (5 to it / it to 5) | AVN anti-combination | Graha friendship (5 to it / it to 5) | Life Path marriage (5 to it / it to 5) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Yes | Neutral | - | Friendly | Compatible |
| 2 | No | Enemy | - | Friendly | Challenging |
| 3 | Yes | Enemy | - | Friendly | Compatible |
| 4 | No | Friend | - | Neutral / friendly | Challenging |
| 5 | Yes | Neutral | Same number: avoid | Friendly | Unlisted |
| 6 | Yes | Friend | - | Friendly | Unlisted / challenging |
| 7 | No | Neutral | - | Neutral / friendly | Compatible |
| 8 | No | Friend | - | Neutral / friendly | Challenging |
| 9 | Yes | Neutral / enemy | - | Neutral / friendly | Unlisted |
Two features of the 5 stand out in the table. First, Mercury's row in Vedic Numerology Basic has no non-friendly entry at all: every number is either a friend or neutral, and every other planet's row counts Mercury as a friend. Second, Advanced Vedic Numerology is one-way for the 9: the 5 calls the 9 neutral, but the 9 calls the 5 an enemy.
Only the 1 is on the good or neutral side of every table, and the 7 comes close. The 3 is the clearest split: in harmony, friendly, Life Path compatible, and an enemy in Advanced Vedic Numerology. The 4 and the 8 split the other way: friends in that book, challenges in the Life Path list.
What the books say about pairing a 5
- Advanced Vedic Numerology, "Number Compatibility" (p.37): friends 4, 6 and 8; neutrals 1, 7 and 9; enemies 2 and 3.
- Its "Marriage Compatibility" page (p.103) prints the 5's line of the Pure Anti table as "Nil". So the anti-combination reading can never call a 5's pairing favourable: for a 5 it returns either "same Mulank, avoid" or "neutral". The 7 is the only other number with the same blank line.
- Vedic Numerology Basic, "Compatibility of Numbers": Mercury counts 1, 2, 3, 6 and 5 as friendly and 7, 8, 9 and 4 as neutral, with no non-friendly column.
- Vedic Numerology Basic, Life Path 5 "The Adventurer": compatible with 1, 3 and 7; potential challenges with 2, 4 and 8.
- Numerology: Metaphysical Secrets, Ch. 9: a Five is most compatible with 7, 3 and 1. The two books arrive at exactly the same three partners for the 5, the same agreement they show for the 1 and the 2.
- Numerology Masters Notes' Destiny Number grid (p.179), read on the Bhagyanks: a Destiny 5 is graded A only with 1; B with 5, 9 and 11; C with 2, 3, 6, 7, 22 and 33; and D with 4 and 8.
So the 1 is the one partner that no source puts on the poor side, and the 3 and the 7 are named by two separate books. The harmony table, which drives the label, includes the 3 but leaves out the 7.
Worked example: a 5 January 1990 birth with three partners
- Person A, 5 January 1990: Mulank 5. Bhagyank 5 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 25, and 2 + 5 = 7. Row 7 of the harmony table is short: 4, 7 and 8.
- Partner 1 January 1993: Mulank 1; Bhagyank 1 + 1 + 1 + 9 + 9 + 3 = 24, 2 + 4 = 6.
- Partner 3 January 1993: Mulank 3; Bhagyank 26, 2 + 6 = 8.
- Partner 4 January 1993: Mulank 4; Bhagyank 27, 2 + 7 = 9.
| Partner | Mulanks | Bhagyanks | Harmony label | AVN relation | Chinese grid (Bhagyanks) | Life Path marriage (Bhagyanks) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Jan 1993 | 5 and 1 | 7 and 6 | Workable (Mulank only) | Neutral | C, average | Challenging both ways |
| 3 Jan 1993 | 5 and 3 | 7 and 8 | Strong | Enemy | D, challenging | 7 lists 8 as a challenge |
| 4 Jan 1993 | 5 and 4 | 7 and 9 | Needs effort | Friend | B, good match | Compatible both ways |
This birth date turns the tables almost upside down. The partner with the strongest harmony label, a Mulank 3, is an enemy in Advanced Vedic Numerology, gets the Chinese grid's weakest grade and draws a Life Path challenge. The partner labelled "Needs effort", a Mulank 4, is a friend in Advanced Vedic Numerology, a B in the grid and compatible both ways on the Life Path list. The reason is the 5's own Bhagyank: a 7, whose harmony row holds only 4, 7 and 8, so the Bhagyank check rarely succeeds.
Checking your own pair by hand
- Reduce each person's day of birth to one digit. That is the Mulank; for a 5 it is the 5th, 14th or 23rd.
- Add every digit of each full birth date, unpadded, and reduce, stopping at 11, 22 or 33. That is the Bhagyank.
- Look up the partner's Mulank in row 5 (1, 3, 5, 6, 9), then the partner's Bhagyank in the row of your own Bhagyank, reading a master number at its root. Count the matches to get the label.
- For the book readings, note which number each one uses. The friend / enemy table, the anti-combination and the planetary table read the two Mulanks. The Destiny grid and the Life Path marriage list read the two Bhagyanks, so for the person in the example above they read a 7, not a 5.
That last step explains most surprises. A Mulank 5 whose Bhagyank is also 5 will find the Life Path list agreeing with the "1, 3 and 7" of the books above; a Mulank 5 with a Bhagyank of 7 is read there as "The Seeker", whose listed partners are 4, 5 and 9.
How often a 5 gets each label
For the 5 January 1990 birth, the engine checked every partner date from 1 January 1985 to 31 December 1999: of 5,478 dates, 1,016 were Strong, 2,836 Workable and 1,626 Needs effort. The partner's Mulank was in the 5's row on 3,045 dates, more than for the Mulanks 1 to 4 (2,433 to 2,505), because the row has five numbers. The Strong count is the lowest of those five Mulanks, because of the short Bhagyank row described above.
What number compatibility cannot tell you
Each reading is a digit lookup in a table from a book, and for the 5 the tables contradict each other outright on seven of the nine partners; only the 1 and the 7 escape. The app keeps every reading under its source and does not choose. A chart-based reading is in the Kundli Matching calculator. Neighbouring pages cover number 3 compatibility, number 4, number 6 and number 7, and Mulank, Bhagyank and Life Path explains the inputs.
- Which numbers suit a 5 in this app?
- In the harmony table behind the match label: 1, 3, 5, 6 and 9. The book tables on this page are shown beside the label and do not change it.
- Why does the anti-combination never call my match good?
- Because Advanced Vedic Numerology's Pure Anti table prints "Nil" for 5. With no anti partner, the rule can only say "same Mulank, avoid" or "neutral" for a Mulank 5.
- Is 5 with 3 a good match?
- The harmony table, Vedic Numerology Basic and Metaphysical Secrets say yes. Advanced Vedic Numerology calls the 3 an enemy of the 5, and the Destiny grid grades a 5 and a 3 C.
- My birthday is the 14th. Is my number 14 or 5?
- For the Mulank, 5: 1 + 4 = 5, and that 5 is what every compatibility lookup uses. Separately, the Chaldean profile behind the Name Number calculator flags a birth on the 14th as a karmic debt 14 on the birth-day number, following Numerology Professional Course Notes; the flag does not change the Mulank. The Life Path calculator shows both of your birth numbers.
- Does "Strong" mean we will get on?
- No. It means two digit lookups both found a match in one table. Nothing about the two people beyond their birth dates enters it.

What it needs
Name and birth date
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
