In short
Jupiter in Leo sits in the sign of the Sun, a natural friend of Jupiter, so its dignity is Friendly sign by default and can read Friendly sign or Neutral in a real chart. Saravali Ch. 27 reads it as strength, courage and standing in assemblies, then changes the verdict according to which planet aspects it. The house Leo occupies from your Lagna decides what Jupiter rules and where it acts.
Leo belongs to the Sun, which this engine counts as a natural friend of Jupiter, so with nothing else known the label is Friendly sign; in a real chart it can read Friendly sign or Neutral. That label is only the starting point. What the placement does in a chart is a separate question, answered by the house Leo occupies from your Lagna, the houses Jupiter rules from there, and the planets that aspect it. This page sets out each of those, with the classical statement for this exact combination.
It covers the combination only. For Jupiter as a graha - its significations, strength and dashas - start with Jupiter in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its lord, its nakshatras and what a rising Leo means - see Leo, Simha Rashi. What follows is a map of rules and of what the texts say, not a forecast about anyone.
Jupiter in Leo: dignity, and how this app decides it
Leo is neither Jupiter's own sign nor its sign of exaltation (Cancer) or debilitation (Capricorn). So the label comes from the relationship between Jupiter and the sign's lord, the Sun. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 derives the natural relationship; this engine's table of natural relationships makes the Sun a natural friend of Jupiter, which gives the sign-only label Friendly sign.
| Degrees of Leo | Label in this engine (no chart) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Friendly sign | One fourth |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relationship between the planet and the sign's lord. For Jupiter in Leo none of the first four tests applies, so the label always comes from the relationship with the Sun, and it is the same at every degree of the sign.
In a real chart the engine uses the fivefold relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58, combining the natural relation with the temporary relation of Sl. 56: two grahas are temporary friends when one sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the other, and temporary enemies otherwise. Sun is a natural friend of Jupiter. If the Sun sits in one of those six signs counted from Leo, the compound is Great Friend and the label reads Friendly sign; if it sits anywhere else, the compound is Neutral and the label reads Neutral. So Jupiter in Leo can show as Friendly sign or Neutral depending on where the Sun is. The full rule is under Panchadha Maitri.
The scoring is the engine's, not the text's. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 grades the results - exaltation full, Moolatrikona three quarters, own sign half, a friend's sign a quarter, a neutral's an eighth, an enemy's sign or debilitation nil. The engine gives Exalted and Moolatrikona a sthana strength of 10, Own sign 7.5, Friendly sign 6.25, Neutral 5, and Enemy sign and Debilitated 0. The order is the same; the gaps between the steps are not. The general idea is under dignity. Neighbouring placements show the contrast: Jupiter in Cancer and Jupiter in Virgo, and the debilitation case Jupiter in Capricorn.
The nakshatras Jupiter moves through in Leo
Leo holds all four padas of Magha, all four padas of Purva Phalguni and pada 1 of Uttara Phalguni. Each pada is 3 degrees 20 minutes, so the spans below follow from the pada count. The dignity label is the same in all of them; the nakshatra adds its own lord and pada to the reading, which the nakshatra pages take up: Magha, Purva Phalguni and Uttara Phalguni.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Leo | Span within Leo | Jupiter's label there (no chart) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magha | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 0 degrees to 13 degrees 20 minutes | Friendly sign |
| Purva Phalguni | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 13 degrees 20 minutes to 26 degrees 40 minutes | Friendly sign |
| Uttara Phalguni | 1 | 26 degrees 40 minutes to 30 degrees | Friendly sign |
What the classical texts say about Jupiter in Leo
Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 9-10
In Leo the line reads lasting enmities, strength and courage, abundant friendship, learning and wealth, eminent relatives, a king's heroism, recognition in assemblies, the defeat of opponents, a strong physique, and a liking for hills, fortresses, forests and temples.
The lines on either side make the contrast clear. For Cancer (Sl. 7-8) the chapter gives learning, wealth, honour and long-lived children; for Virgo (Sl. 11-12) it gives skill, learning and steady gains. For Leo the short form is strength, courage and standing in assemblies. See Jupiter in Cancer and Jupiter in Virgo for those lines in full.
Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 49-54: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads Jupiter in Leo under the aspect of each other planet. These lines often change the verdict more than the sign line does, because they are where the chapter turns praise into censure or the reverse. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Sun: dear to good men, famous, a king, extremely affluent and virtuous.
- Aspected by the Moon: very handsome but unclean, rich through the spouse's fortune, master of the five senses.
- Aspected by Mars: honour for elders, distinguished acts, skill, purity, adventure and cruelty.
- Aspected by Mercury: knowledge of building and civil works, worldly learning, virtue, sweet speech and a minister's post.
- Aspected by Venus: dear to women, fortunate, honoured by the ruler and very strong.
- Aspected by Saturn: garrulous and eloquent, without happiness, sharp, with mean children and spouse.
The pattern is the useful part: the same sign reads well or badly depending on what aspects it, so the sign line is only half of Saravali's verdict. Which of these lines applies to a given chart is a matter of counting houses, as the worked example below shows.
Saravali Ch. 45 on the dignity itself
Saravali Ch. 45, "Effects of Planetary Dignities", adds a short line for each class of dignity, independent of the sign. For Jupiter in a friend's sign (Sl. 12-14) it gives respectable and a performer of famous deeds. The chapter has no line for a neutral's sign, so where the engine reads Neutral, Saravali Ch. 45 is silent. These are the text's statements; this app reports them and does not turn them into predictions.
BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras
BPHS does not give a sign-by-sign line for Jupiter. Its Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 rule for Hamsa Yoga needs Jupiter in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra, so Jupiter in Leo never forms it, whatever the Lagna. The Jupiter section of the Bhrigu Sutras commentary agrees on the signs (own Sagittarius and Pisces, exaltation Cancer at 5 degrees, debilitation Capricorn at 5 degrees) and on the friends (Sun, Moon, Mars), enemies (Mercury, Venus) and neutral (Saturn). It differs on one number: it gives only the first 5 degrees of Sagittarius as Moolatrikona, where BPHS gives the first one third, 10 degrees. This engine follows BPHS. The Bhrigu Sutras proper is arranged by house rather than by sign, so it has no line for Jupiter in Leo as such.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: Jupiter's exaltation is Cancer and its debilitation Capricorn, deepest at 5 degrees (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50, Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35-36, the Bhrigu Sutras commentary).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali weighs it by the aspecting planet (Ch. 27 Sl. 49-54); BPHS by rules such as the Kendra test for Hamsa Yoga.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for Jupiter in Leo as such. Of the texts used here, Saravali is the only one that writes one.
- Different numbers: the Moolatrikona span in Sagittarius is 10 degrees in BPHS and 5 degrees in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary. This engine uses BPHS.
- Different scales: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 puts Moolatrikona a step below exaltation; this engine gives both the same sthana strength.
What Jupiter rules from each Lagna, with Jupiter in Leo
Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces. With whole-sign houses the table below is mechanical: the second column is where Leo falls, the third and fourth are the houses Jupiter rules. The planned house pages, such as Jupiter in the 1st house and Jupiter in the 10th house, take each house further.
| Lagna | House of Jupiter (Leo) | Jupiter rules | Jupiter also rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 5th | 9th (Sagittarius) | 12th (Pisces) |
| Taurus | 4th | 8th (Sagittarius) | 11th (Pisces) |
| Gemini | 3rd | 7th (Sagittarius) | 10th (Pisces) |
| Cancer | 2nd | 6th (Sagittarius) | 9th (Pisces) |
| Leo | 1st | 5th (Sagittarius) | 8th (Pisces) |
| Virgo | 12th | 4th (Sagittarius) | 7th (Pisces) |
| Libra | 11th | 3rd (Sagittarius) | 6th (Pisces) |
| Scorpio | 10th | 2nd (Sagittarius) | 5th (Pisces) |
| Sagittarius | 9th | 1st (Sagittarius) | 4th (Pisces) |
| Capricorn | 8th | 12th (Sagittarius) | 3rd (Pisces) |
| Aquarius | 7th | 11th (Sagittarius) | 2nd (Pisces) |
| Pisces | 6th | 10th (Sagittarius) | 1st (Pisces) |
Two groups of rows are worth singling out. For Aries, Leo and Sagittarius rising, Leo is a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th). For Virgo, Capricorn and Pisces rising, it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th), and the engine's planet table names that house type alongside the dignity. Neither fact changes the dignity label; both change how the planet is read.
Worked example: 21 August 1991, 06:02 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine and found by a deterministic search. Leo rises at 4.81 degrees. Jupiter is at 1.44 degrees of Leo, in Magha pada 1, in the 1st house, not retrograde and combust. The engine labels it Neutral. Anyone can re-enter the date, time and place in the Birth Chart calculator and see the same chart.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Leo 3.75 | Magha (2) | 1 | Moolatrikona |
| Moon | Sagittarius 15.56 | Purva Ashadha (1) | 5 | Enemy sign |
| Mars | Leo 29.07 | Uttara Phalguni (1) | 1 | Neutral |
| Mercury | Leo 5.28, retrograde, combust | Magha (2) | 1 | Neutral |
| Jupiter | Leo 1.44, combust | Magha (1) | 1 | Neutral |
| Venus | Leo 6.62, retrograde, combust | Magha (2) | 1 | Enemy sign |
| Saturn | Capricorn 7.93, retrograde | Uttara Ashadha (4) | 6 | Own sign |
| Rahu | Sagittarius 23.11, retrograde | Purva Ashadha (3) | 5 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Gemini 23.11, retrograde | Punarvasu (1) | 11 | Neutral |
Why Neutral. The Sun, the lord of Leo, is in Leo, the 1st sign counted from Leo. That makes it a temporary enemy (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56). Natural friend plus temporary enemy gives Neutral under Sl. 57-58, which the engine shows as Neutral. This differs from the sign-only label, Friendly sign, which is exactly the chart-to-chart movement described above.
Lordship. For a Leo Lagna, Sagittarius is the 5th house and Pisces the 8th, so Jupiter rules the 5th and the 8th and sits in the 1st. The 1st is a trikona from the Lagna.
Aspects. Saravali's aspect lines need a planet whose drishti reaches Leo. Using the rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - none of the other six grahas aspects the 1st house here. So none of the Sl. 49-54 lines applies to this chart, and only the bare sign line of Sl. 9-10 does. That is a common outcome, and it is why the aspects are counted before the aspect lines are quoted.
Company. Sun (3.75 degrees), Mars (29.07 degrees), Mercury (5.28 degrees) and Venus (6.62 degrees) share Leo with Jupiter. Saravali's Ch. 27 sign and aspect lines cover aspects, not planets in the same sign, so this page adds no reading of its own for the conjunction. Combustion. Jupiter is flagged combust: it is within 11 degrees of the Sun, the orb astrologyEngine.js uses for Jupiter. The engine's planet-strength reading sets the position component to zero for a combust planet, following its source's line that a planet in combustion has no strength; the sign label itself is unchanged. The term has its own entry: combustion.
The rest of the chart. Sun is in Moolatrikona in Leo and Saturn is in its own sign in Capricorn. That is a reminder that one placement describes one part of a chart, and the reading of Jupiter in Leo is never the reading of the whole.
How often Jupiter is in Leo
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Jupiter was in Leo in 259 of them, 8.6 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary notes that Jupiter takes a little less than twelve years to go once round the Sun, so it spends roughly a year in each sign. Over the 75 years of the sample that means several separate passes through the sign, which is why the share sits near one in twelve.
Checking Jupiter in Leo in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Jupiter is in Leo and note the label the planet table gives it.
- Note the house Leo occupies and the houses Sagittarius and Pisces occupy: those are where Jupiter sits and what it rules.
- Find the Sun and count from Leo to its sign. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th makes it a temporary friend; anything else a temporary enemy. That decides the label.
- List the planets that aspect Leo: anything in the 7th sign from it, Mars when the sign is 4th or 8th from Mars, Jupiter when it is 5th or 9th from Jupiter, Saturn when it is 3rd or 10th from Saturn. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 49-54 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, the ninth-part chart with the Navamsa calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Jupiter Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Jupiter exalted or debilitated in Leo?
- Neither. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn. In Leo it is in the sign of the Sun, labelled by relationship. See Jupiter in Cancer.
- Does the degree of Jupiter in Leo matter?
- Not for the label, which is the same at every degree of Leo. The degree still sets the nakshatra and pada, and how close Jupiter is to the Sun for combustion.
- Can another planet change the dignity of Jupiter in Leo?
- Yes, through the Sun. Its position decides the temporary relationship, and the fivefold result can read Friendly sign or Neutral. Aspects change the Saravali reading but not the label.
- Does Jupiter in Leo give Hamsa Yoga?
- No. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 needs Jupiter in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra, and Leo is neither for Jupiter.
- Which nakshatras can Jupiter occupy in Leo?
- Magha (padas 1, 2, 3, 4), Purva Phalguni (padas 1, 2, 3, 4) and Uttara Phalguni (pada 1), per this engine's nakshatra table.
- How common is Jupiter in Leo?
- In this app's sample it was in Leo in 259 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.6 per cent. That describes the sky in the sample, not a share of people.
