In short
Jupiter in Taurus sits in the sign of Venus, a natural enemy of Jupiter, so its dignity is Enemy sign by default and can read Neutral or Enemy sign in a real chart. Saravali Ch. 27 reads it as wealth, judgement and skill, then changes the verdict according to which planet aspects it. The house Taurus occupies from your Lagna decides what Jupiter rules and where it acts.
Taurus belongs to Venus, which this engine counts as a natural enemy of Jupiter, so with nothing else known the label is Enemy sign; in a real chart it can read Neutral or Enemy sign. That label is only the starting point. What the placement does in a chart is a separate question, answered by the house Taurus occupies from your Lagna, the houses Jupiter rules from there, and the planets that aspect it. This page sets out each of those, with the classical statement for this exact combination.
It covers the combination only. For Jupiter as a graha - its significations, strength and dashas - start with Jupiter in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself - its lord, its nakshatras and what a rising Taurus means - see Taurus, Vrishabha Rashi. What follows is a map of rules and of what the texts say, not a forecast about anyone.
Jupiter in Taurus: dignity, and how this app decides it
Taurus is neither Jupiter's own sign nor its sign of exaltation (Cancer) or debilitation (Capricorn). So the label comes from the relationship between Jupiter and the sign's lord, Venus. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 derives the natural relationship; this engine's table of natural relationships makes Venus a natural enemy of Jupiter, which gives the sign-only label Enemy sign.
| Degrees of Taurus | Label in this engine (no chart) | BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 share of good effects |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Enemy sign | Nil |
How the engine decides
The function that labels every planet in your chart, dignityOf, runs its tests in a fixed order: exaltation first, then Moolatrikona, then debilitation, then own sign, and only then the relationship between the planet and the sign's lord. For Jupiter in Taurus none of the first four tests applies, so the label always comes from the relationship with Venus, and it is the same at every degree of the sign.
In a real chart the engine uses the fivefold relationship of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 57-58, combining the natural relation with the temporary relation of Sl. 56: two grahas are temporary friends when one sits in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th sign from the other, and temporary enemies otherwise. Venus is a natural enemy of Jupiter. If Venus sits in one of those six signs counted from Taurus, the compound is Neutral and the label reads Neutral; if it sits anywhere else, the compound is Great Enemy and the label reads Enemy sign. So Jupiter in Taurus can show as Neutral or Enemy sign depending on where Venus is. The full rule is under Panchadha Maitri.
The scoring is the engine's, not the text's. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 grades the results - exaltation full, Moolatrikona three quarters, own sign half, a friend's sign a quarter, a neutral's an eighth, an enemy's sign or debilitation nil. The engine gives Exalted and Moolatrikona a sthana strength of 10, Own sign 7.5, Friendly sign 6.25, Neutral 5, and Enemy sign and Debilitated 0. The order is the same; the gaps between the steps are not. The general idea is under dignity. Neighbouring placements show the contrast: Jupiter in Aries and Jupiter in Gemini, the exaltation case Jupiter in Cancer, and the debilitation case Jupiter in Capricorn.
The nakshatras Jupiter moves through in Taurus
Taurus holds padas 2, 3, 4 of Krittika, all four padas of Rohini and padas 1, 2 of Mrigashira. Each pada is 3 degrees 20 minutes, so the spans below follow from the pada count. The dignity label is the same in all of them; the nakshatra adds its own lord and pada to the reading, which the nakshatra pages take up: Krittika, Rohini and Mrigashira.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Taurus | Span within Taurus | Jupiter's label there (no chart) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Krittika | 2, 3, 4 | 0 degrees to 10 degrees | Enemy sign |
| Rohini | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 10 degrees to 23 degrees 20 minutes | Enemy sign |
| Mrigashira | 1, 2 | 23 degrees 20 minutes to 30 degrees | Enemy sign |
What the classical texts say about Jupiter in Taurus
Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 3-4
The Taurus line is long and favourable: a broad, well-built body, honour shown to the learned and to the gods, splendour and good fortune, devotion to the spouse, a good appearance and profession, cattle and abundant wealth, distinction in speech, intelligence and skill, political and judicial wisdom, modesty, medical accomplishment and skill in experiments.
The lines on either side make the contrast clear. For Aries (Sl. 1-2) the chapter gives a famous profession and wealth, with enemies and expense; for Gemini (Sl. 5-6) it gives scholarship, eloquence and poetry. For Taurus the short form is wealth, judgement and skill. See Jupiter in Aries and Jupiter in Gemini for those lines in full.
Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 31-36: the aspect lines
Saravali then reads Jupiter in Taurus or Libra under the aspect of each other planet. These lines often change the verdict more than the sign line does, because they are where the chapter turns praise into censure or the reverse. In paraphrase:
- Aspected by the Sun: attendants and cattle, much wandering, a tall body, learning and a minister's post.
- Aspected by the Moon: abundant wealth, calm and sweetness, dear to mother and spouse, and many pleasures.
- Aspected by Mars: dear to women, learned, courageous, affluent, happy, of royal descent.
- Aspected by Mercury: learned, skilful, sweet, fortunate, rich, highly virtuous and splendid.
- Aspected by Venus: very attractive and affluent, with fine ornaments, mercy, and excellent comforts and robes.
- Aspected by Saturn: a scholar with abundant wealth and grain, foremost in his town, but unclean, plain and without a spouse.
The pattern is the useful part: the same sign reads well or badly depending on what aspects it, so the sign line is only half of Saravali's verdict. Which of these lines applies to a given chart is a matter of counting houses, as the worked example below shows.
Saravali Ch. 45 on the dignity itself
Saravali Ch. 45, "Effects of Planetary Dignities", adds a short line for each class of dignity, independent of the sign. For Jupiter in an enemy's sign (Sl. 19-21) it gives a want of justice and wealth, together with a remark about virility. The chapter has no line for a neutral's sign, so where the engine reads Neutral, Saravali Ch. 45 is silent. These are the text's statements; this app reports them and does not turn them into predictions.
BPHS and Bhrigu Sutras
BPHS does not give a sign-by-sign line for Jupiter. Its Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 rule for Hamsa Yoga needs Jupiter in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra, so Jupiter in Taurus never forms it, whatever the Lagna. The Jupiter section of the Bhrigu Sutras commentary agrees on the signs (own Sagittarius and Pisces, exaltation Cancer at 5 degrees, debilitation Capricorn at 5 degrees) and on the friends (Sun, Moon, Mars), enemies (Mercury, Venus) and neutral (Saturn). It differs on one number: it gives only the first 5 degrees of Sagittarius as Moolatrikona, where BPHS gives the first one third, 10 degrees. This engine follows BPHS. The Bhrigu Sutras proper is arranged by house rather than by sign, so it has no line for Jupiter in Taurus as such.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: Jupiter's exaltation is Cancer and its debilitation Capricorn, deepest at 5 degrees (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50, Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 35-36, the Bhrigu Sutras commentary).
- Agreed: dignity is not the whole reading. Saravali weighs it by the aspecting planet (Ch. 27 Sl. 31-36); BPHS by rules such as the Kendra test for Hamsa Yoga.
- Silent: BPHS has no character line for Jupiter in Taurus as such. Of the texts used here, Saravali is the only one that writes one.
- Different numbers: the Moolatrikona span in Sagittarius is 10 degrees in BPHS and 5 degrees in the Bhrigu Sutras commentary. This engine uses BPHS.
- Different scales: BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 59-60 puts Moolatrikona a step below exaltation; this engine gives both the same sthana strength.
What Jupiter rules from each Lagna, with Jupiter in Taurus
Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces. With whole-sign houses the table below is mechanical: the second column is where Taurus falls, the third and fourth are the houses Jupiter rules. The planned house pages, such as Jupiter in the 1st house and Jupiter in the 10th house, take each house further.
| Lagna | House of Jupiter (Taurus) | Jupiter rules | Jupiter also rules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 2nd | 9th (Sagittarius) | 12th (Pisces) |
| Taurus | 1st | 8th (Sagittarius) | 11th (Pisces) |
| Gemini | 12th | 7th (Sagittarius) | 10th (Pisces) |
| Cancer | 11th | 6th (Sagittarius) | 9th (Pisces) |
| Leo | 10th | 5th (Sagittarius) | 8th (Pisces) |
| Virgo | 9th | 4th (Sagittarius) | 7th (Pisces) |
| Libra | 8th | 3rd (Sagittarius) | 6th (Pisces) |
| Scorpio | 7th | 2nd (Sagittarius) | 5th (Pisces) |
| Sagittarius | 6th | 1st (Sagittarius) | 4th (Pisces) |
| Capricorn | 5th | 12th (Sagittarius) | 3rd (Pisces) |
| Aquarius | 4th | 11th (Sagittarius) | 2nd (Pisces) |
| Pisces | 3rd | 10th (Sagittarius) | 1st (Pisces) |
Two groups of rows are worth singling out. For Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn rising, Taurus is a trikona (the 1st, 5th or 9th). For Gemini, Libra and Sagittarius rising, it is a dusthana (the 6th, 8th or 12th), and the engine's planet table names that house type alongside the dignity. Neither fact changes the dignity label; both change how the planet is read.
Worked example: 20 June 1988, 09:43 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine and found by a deterministic search. Leo rises at 0.55 degrees. Jupiter is at 0.2 degrees of Taurus, in Krittika pada 2, in the 10th house, not retrograde and not combust. The engine labels it Enemy sign. Anyone can re-enter the date, time and place in the Birth Chart calculator and see the same chart.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Gemini 5.36 | Mrigashira (4) | 11 | Friendly sign |
| Moon | Leo 10.81 | Magha (4) | 1 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Aquarius 23.93 | Purva Bhadrapada (2) | 7 | Friendly sign |
| Mercury | Taurus 25.28, retrograde, combust | Mrigashira (1) | 10 | Neutral |
| Jupiter | Taurus 0.2 | Krittika (2) | 10 | Enemy sign |
| Venus | Taurus 24.24, retrograde | Mrigashira (1) | 10 | Own sign |
| Saturn | Sagittarius 5.52, retrograde | Mula (2) | 5 | Enemy sign |
| Rahu | Aquarius 24.41, retrograde | Purva Bhadrapada (2) | 7 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Leo 24.41, retrograde | Purva Phalguni (4) | 1 | Neutral |
Why Enemy sign. Venus, the lord of Taurus, is in Taurus, the 1st sign counted from Taurus. That makes it a temporary enemy (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56). Natural enemy plus temporary enemy gives Great Enemy under Sl. 57-58, which the engine shows as Enemy sign. Here it matches the sign-only label, Enemy sign, but a different position of Venus would have moved it.
Lordship. For a Leo Lagna, Sagittarius is the 5th house and Pisces the 8th, so Jupiter rules the 5th and the 8th and sits in the 10th. The 10th is a Kendra, though without own or exaltation dignity no Mahapurusha yoga follows.
Aspects. Saravali's aspect lines need a planet whose drishti reaches Taurus. Using the rule this engine applies - every graha aspects the 7th house from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th - Mars in the 7th aspects the 10th. So this Saravali line applies alongside the sign line: for Mars, dear to women, learned, courageous, affluent, happy, of royal descent. Where lines pull in different directions, the text does not say which wins, and this page does not decide it.
Company. Mercury (25.28 degrees) and Venus (24.24 degrees) share Taurus with Jupiter. Saravali's Ch. 27 sign and aspect lines cover aspects, not planets in the same sign, so this page adds no reading of its own for the conjunction.
The rest of the chart. Venus is in its own sign in Taurus. That is a reminder that one placement describes one part of a chart, and the reading of Jupiter in Taurus is never the reading of the whole.
How often Jupiter is in Taurus
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Jupiter was in Taurus in 242 of them, 8.1 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The Bhrigu Sutras commentary notes that Jupiter takes a little less than twelve years to go once round the Sun, so it spends roughly a year in each sign. Over the 75 years of the sample that means several separate passes through the sign, which is why the share sits near one in twelve.
Checking Jupiter in Taurus in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Jupiter is in Taurus and note the label the planet table gives it.
- Note the house Taurus occupies and the houses Sagittarius and Pisces occupy: those are where Jupiter sits and what it rules.
- Find Venus and count from Taurus to its sign. The 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th or 12th makes it a temporary friend; anything else a temporary enemy. That decides the label.
- List the planets that aspect Taurus: anything in the 7th sign from it, Mars when the sign is 4th or 8th from Mars, Jupiter when it is 5th or 9th from Jupiter, Saturn when it is 3rd or 10th from Saturn. Only those bring a Saravali Ch. 27 Sl. 31-36 line into play.
- Look at strength with the Shad Bala calculator, the ninth-part chart with the Navamsa calculator, and timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Jupiter Mahadasha page.
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Jupiter exalted or debilitated in Taurus?
- Neither. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn. In Taurus it is in the sign of Venus, labelled by relationship. See Jupiter in Cancer.
- Does the degree of Jupiter in Taurus matter?
- Not for the label, which is the same at every degree of Taurus. The degree still sets the nakshatra and pada, and how close Jupiter is to the Sun for combustion.
- Can another planet change the dignity of Jupiter in Taurus?
- Yes, through Venus. Its position decides the temporary relationship, and the fivefold result can read Neutral or Enemy sign. Aspects change the Saravali reading but not the label.
- Does Jupiter in Taurus give Hamsa Yoga?
- No. BPHS Ch. 75 Sl. 1-2 needs Jupiter in its own or exaltation sign in a Kendra, and Taurus is neither for Jupiter.
- Which nakshatras can Jupiter occupy in Taurus?
- Krittika (padas 2, 3, 4), Rohini (padas 1, 2, 3, 4) and Mrigashira (padas 1, 2), per this engine's nakshatra table.
- How common is Jupiter in Taurus?
- In this app's sample it was in Taurus in 242 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.1 per cent. That describes the sky in the sample, not a share of people.
