In short
Ketu in Gemini puts the Moon's descending node in Mercury's sign, with Rahu always in Sagittarius. No corpus text gives the sign a special dignity for it, and this app's engine labels the nodes Neutral everywhere. The house it occupies does most of the work.
Ketu in Gemini is the Moon's descending node placed in a sign ruled by Mercury, with Rahu always opposite in Sagittarius. No classical text in the corpus gives Gemini a special dignity for Ketu, and this app's engine assigns the nodes no dignity at all. What remains is the house Gemini occupies, a handful of sign-qualified lines, and the axis the two nodes form.
This page covers only the combination. For Ketu as a graha - its significations, its dasha and the house placements - start with Ketu in Vedic astrology. For the sign itself see Gemini, Mithuna Rashi. Here we set out what the texts say about Ketu in Gemini, where they disagree, how this app's engine handles it, and one worked chart. It is a map of rules, not a forecast about anyone.
Ketu in Gemini: dignity, and how this app decides it
This app's engine gives Ketu no dignity at all. The function dignityOf in kundaliEngine.js looks the planet up in its DIGNITY table, which has rows for the seven grahas from the Sun to Saturn only; for Ketu it finds nothing and returns Neutral, at every degree of every sign. The natural friendship table (NATURAL_RELATIONS) likewise covers the seven grahas only - the code comment says the nodes are "excluded from dignity scoring here". So Saturn-style labels such as Exalted or Debilitated never appear for Ketu on your Kundali page, and Ketu in Gemini is shown as Neutral from 0 to 30 degrees. The terms themselves are explained under dignity, uchcha, neecha and Moolatrikona.
| Degrees of Gemini | Label in this engine | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 0 to 30 | Neutral | No DIGNITY row for Ketu; dignityOf returns Neutral |
That is a deliberate silence, not an oversight, because the classical texts do not agree on the nodes' dignities. BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39, introducing the effects of Rahu's dasha, says it will give the exaltation and debilitation signs of Rahu and Ketu, and then names: Rahu exalted in Vrishabh (Taurus), Ketu exalted in Vrischik (Scorpio); Moolatrikona Mithun (Gemini) for Rahu and Dhanu (Sagittarius) for Ketu; own signs Kumbh (Aquarius) for Rahu and Vrischik (Scorpio) for Ketu - adding that "some sages" make Kanya (Virgo) Rahu's own sign and Meen (Pisces) Ketu's. The passage does not go on to name the debilitation signs. Bhrigu Sutras, in its introduction to the nodes, calls the question "quite a controversy amongst the ancients" and quotes two more works: Uttara Kalamrita (Rahu exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio, the reverse for Ketu; Aquarius Rahu's own sign and Scorpio Ketu's; Moolatrikona Gemini for Rahu and Virgo for Ketu) and Sanketnidhi (Rahu exalted in Gemini with Virgo its own sign; Ketu exalted in Sagittarius with Pisces its own sign).
| Source | Ketu exalted | Ketu debilitated | Ketu Moolatrikona | Ketu own sign |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 34-39 | Scorpio | not named | Sagittarius | Scorpio (Pisces per "some sages") |
| Uttara Kalamrita, quoted in Bhrigu Sutras | Scorpio | Taurus | Virgo | Scorpio |
| Sanketnidhi, quoted in Bhrigu Sutras | Sagittarius | not given | not given | Pisces |
| This app's engine | none | none | none | none (Neutral everywhere) |
None of these sources assigns Gemini any dignity for Ketu: it is not named as an exaltation, debilitation, Moolatrikona or own sign in BPHS, Uttara Kalamrita or Sanketnidhi as quoted in the corpus. This page therefore has no dignity claim to report for the sign, and none is invented. The signs the texts do name have their own pages: Ketu in Taurus, Ketu in Virgo, Ketu in Scorpio, Ketu in Sagittarius and Ketu in Pisces.
Because the engine attaches no friendship to Ketu, the fivefold relation that makes a Saturn or a Mars label change from chart to chart does not apply either. What does apply is Gemini's lord, Mercury: it rules the sign Ketu occupies, so where Mercury sits is part of how many readers judge Ketu - but that is a reading practice, and the corpus passages quoted on this page do not state it as a rule for Ketu in Gemini. For what Ketu is as a shadow graha see Ketu and chhaya graha.
The nakshatras Ketu moves through in Gemini
Gemini holds padas 3, 4 of Mrigashira; all four padas of Ardra; and padas 1, 2, 3 of Punarvasu. Ketu moves backwards through the zodiac, so it enters Gemini at its last degree and reaches these nakshatras in reverse order - Punarvasu, then Ardra, then Mrigashira. The nakshatra pages go further: Mrigashira, Ardra and Punarvasu.
| Nakshatra | Padas inside Gemini | Degrees of Gemini | Rahu is then in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mrigashira | 3, 4 | 0 degrees to 6 degrees 40 minutes | Sagittarius, at the same degree |
| Ardra | 1, 2, 3, 4 | 6 degrees 40 minutes to 20 degrees | Sagittarius, at the same degree |
| Punarvasu | 1, 2, 3 | 20 degrees to 30 degrees | Sagittarius, at the same degree |
What the classical texts say about Ketu in Gemini
Saravali and BPHS: no sign-by-sign line for the nodes
Saravali gives each of the seven grahas a chapter on its effects in the twelve signs (the Sun in Ch. 22, the Moon in Ch. 23, Mars in Ch. 25, Mercury in Ch. 26, Jupiter in Ch. 27, Venus in Ch. 28, Saturn in Ch. 29). It has no such chapter for Rahu or Ketu, and the corpus file was searched for any line placing Ketu in Gemini. BPHS likewise has no sign-by-sign line for either node. So the character readings that the planet-in-sign pages for the seven grahas quote simply do not exist for Ketu in Gemini in these two texts, and this page does not supply one.
Where the texts do name Gemini
A few rules name signs for the nodes, almost always together with a house. Those that include Gemini for Ketu are:
- Chamatkar Chintamani, quoted in the Bhrigu Sutras Ch. 8 commentary on the 2nd house: Ketu in the 2nd in Aries, Gemini or Virgo: the native "will enjoy all comforts". Applies only when Gemini is your 2nd house - see Ketu in the 2nd house.
The Bhrigu Sutras commentary also notes that its author gives the same results for Rahu and for Ketu in each house, on the view that, being always seventh from each other, they act alike; other authorities, it says, give separate results. The Chamatkar Chintamani lines quoted in that commentary are of this second kind.
BPHS on the Ketu Mahadasha
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 72-77 lists the conditions under which Ketu's dasha is read well: Ketu in a Kendra, a trikona or the 11th, in a "benefic Rashi", or in its exaltation or own sign; in the 3rd, 6th or 11th it adds further gains. Ketu in the 2nd, 8th or 12th, or aspected by a malefic, is read the other way. The passage does not define "benefic Rashi". If it is read as a sign ruled by a natural benefic - this engine's BENEFICS list is Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and the Moon - then Gemini, ruled by Mercury, would qualify; that reading is this page's, not the text's. Timing has its own page: Ketu Mahadasha.
Bhrigu Sutras on the nodes in general
The introduction to the nodes in Bhrigu Sutras adds two general remarks: that "Rahu acts like Saturn and Ketu acts like Mars", stated as a belief rather than a rule, and that the nodes move retrograde at about 19 degrees 20 minutes a year, staying in a sign for about 18 months. It also gives a bleak list of significations for both nodes, which this page reports only as the text's statement. Jyotisha Siddhanta Sara was searched and has nothing on Ketu in Gemini.
Where the texts agree, and where they part
- Agreed: Ketu and Rahu are always opposite each other, so Ketu in Gemini means Rahu in Sagittarius (the Bhrigu Sutras introduction: the two nodes are "exactly 180 degrees apart").
- Disputed: the nodes' dignities. BPHS, Uttara Kalamrita and Sanketnidhi assign different exaltation, Moolatrikona and own signs, and BPHS does not name a debilitation sign in the passage that promises one. This engine follows none of them.
- Silent: neither Saravali nor BPHS has a sign-by-sign character line for Ketu.
- House-bound: the only lines that name Gemini for Ketu also name a house, so they apply to one Lagna each.
Where Ketu in Gemini falls from each Lagna
The nodes rule no sign in this engine, so there is no lordship to tabulate - only the house Gemini occupies and the house Sagittarius occupies for Rahu. Whole-sign houses make the table mechanical. The last column names any corpus line that needs exactly that house with Ketu in Gemini. The house pages, such as Ketu in the 3rd house and Ketu in the 9th house, take each case further.
| Lagna | House of Ketu (Gemini) | House of Rahu (Sagittarius) | Sign-qualified line |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | 3rd | 9th | - |
| Taurus | 2nd | 8th | Chamatkar Chintamani |
| Gemini | 1st | 7th | - |
| Cancer | 12th | 6th | - |
| Leo | 11th | 5th | - |
| Virgo | 10th | 4th | - |
| Libra | 9th | 3rd | - |
| Scorpio | 8th | 2nd | - |
| Sagittarius | 7th | 1st | - |
| Capricorn | 6th | 12th | - |
| Aquarius | 5th | 11th | - |
| Pisces | 4th | 10th | - |
How often Ketu is in Gemini
Across 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, Ketu was in Gemini in 248 of them, 8.3 per cent. That is a property of the sky in the sample, not a count of people. The nodes move steadily backwards - Bhrigu Sutras gives about 19 degrees 20 minutes a year and about 18 months in a sign - so every sign gets a similar share over a long sample, and the births with Ketu in Gemini cluster in a few stretches of time. In the ingress table this app ships (1990-2050, this engine, mean node, UTC), Ketu was in Gemini (that is, Rahu in Sagittarius):
| Entered | Left |
|---|---|
| 12 April 1991 | 30 October 1992 |
| 17 November 2009 | 6 June 2011 |
| 23 June 2028 | 11 January 2030 |
| 29 January 2047 | 17 August 2048 |
The transit reading - the nodes moving through this axis now, counted from your Moon - has its own page: Rahu transit in Sagittarius.
Worked example: 15 April 1991, 17:24 IST, New Delhi
An illustrative birth, not a real person, computed in this app's engine. Virgo rises at 14.07 degrees. Ketu is at 29.87 degrees of Gemini, in Punarvasu pada 3, in the 10th house; Rahu is at the same degree of Sagittarius, in the 4th. The engine marks both nodes retrograde, as it always does, and labels both Neutral, as it always does.
| Graha | Sign and degree | Nakshatra (pada) | House | Dignity in this engine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries 1.29 | Ashwini (1) | 8 | Exalted |
| Moon | Aries 10.34 | Ashwini (4) | 8 | Friendly sign |
| Mars | Gemini 12.98 | Ardra (2) | 10 | Neutral |
| Mercury | Aries 0.2, retrograde | Ashwini (1) | 8 | Friendly sign |
| Jupiter | Cancer 10.22 | Pushya (3) | 11 | Exalted |
| Venus | Taurus 9.2 | Krittika (4) | 9 | Own sign |
| Saturn | Capricorn 12.23 | Shravana (1) | 5 | Own sign |
| Rahu | Sagittarius 29.87, retrograde | Uttara Ashadha (1) | 4 | Neutral |
| Ketu | Gemini 29.87, retrograde | Punarvasu (3) | 10 | Neutral |
Sign lord. Mercury, the lord of Gemini, is in Aries in the 8th house, labelled Friendly sign. The engine does not feed this into Ketu's label, but it is the first thing to read alongside it.
Sign-qualified lines. Gemini is the 10th house in this chart. The lines that name Gemini for Ketu need the 2nd house, so none of them applies to this chart. BPHS Ch. 47's dasha conditions are house-based: the 10th is among the houses Sl. 72-77 lists in Ketu's favour.
Aspects. In this engine the nodes cast only the 7th-house aspect, and receive aspects like any house: every graha aspects the 7th from itself, Mars also the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, Saturn the 3rd and 10th. Rahu (in the 4th) aspects the 10th. Rahu's aspect is automatic: being always in the 7th from Ketu, it always aspects it under this rule.
Company. Mars (12.98) shares Gemini with Ketu. The corpus passages quoted here give no reading for that combination in this sign, so none is added.
Any reader can re-enter this birth - the date, the time in IST and New Delhi as the place - in the Birth Chart calculator and get the same positions. Whether the rest of the chart falls between the nodes is a separate test, done by the Kaal Sarp Dosha calculator and explained in Kaal Sarp Dosha explained.
Checking Ketu in Gemini in your own chart
- Cast your chart with the Birth Chart calculator. Confirm Ketu is in Gemini and Rahu in Sagittarius, and note the degree and nakshatra.
- Note the house Gemini occupies and the house Sagittarius occupies: that is the axis the two nodes hold in your chart.
- If Gemini is your 2nd house, the sign-qualified line quoted above applies; otherwise it does not.
- Find Mercury, the lord of Gemini, and note its sign, house and dignity.
- Look at timing with the Vimshottari Dasha calculator, and at the divisional placement with the Navamsa (D9) calculator. Note that the engine always marks the nodes vakri (retrograde).
What this page does not do
It reports what the texts say and how this app computes the placement. It does not predict events, and where a text links a placement to the body, that is the text's statement, not medical advice. This app prescribes no remedies, gemstones or mantras for any placement.
- Is Ketu exalted in Gemini?
- No text in the corpus says so. Ketu's exaltation is put in Scorpio (BPHS, Uttara Kalamrita) or Sagittarius (Sanketnidhi), and this engine assigns the nodes no dignity at all.
- Why does my Kundali show Ketu as Neutral?
- Because the engine's dignity table has no row for the nodes. dignityOf returns Neutral for Ketu in every sign and degree; it is a deliberate choice given that the classical texts disagree.
- If Ketu is in Gemini, where is Rahu?
- Always in Sagittarius, at the same degree. See Rahu in Sagittarius.
- Does Saravali describe Ketu in Gemini?
- No. Saravali has sign chapters for the seven grahas only. Nothing in the Saravali file places Rahu or Ketu in this sign.
- How common is Ketu in Gemini?
- In this app's sample it was in Gemini in 248 of 3,000 sampled birth moments 1985-2060, 8.3 per cent. The nodes spend roughly 18 months in each sign (Bhrigu Sutras), so the births cluster in particular stretches of years.
- Does this page say what will happen to me?
- No. It reports what the classical texts say and how this app computes the placement. The house, the Lagna, the sign lord and the dasha all change the reading, and none of it is a forecast.
