In plain words
- For a Virgo Moon, Saturn's 7½-year phase (Sade Sati) is Saturn's time in Leo, Virgo and Libra. It tends to ask for patience and steady habits.
- The phase comes in three parts of about two and a half years. In the first, Saturn is in Leo, your 12th house (expenses, rest, letting go). In the middle, Saturn is in Virgo, over your Moon sign (your mind and emotions). In the last, Saturn is in Libra, your 2nd house (money, family, speech). This phase is not running in 2027; the next one comes later.
- The app reads the first two parts as testing and the last as steadier: slow, disciplined progress. The phase tends to bring a wish to save money, read agreements twice, keep targets in writing and avoid rash moves in work and money. Saturn can also pause for a few months and return, because it moves backwards for part of each year.
- In daily life, you may feel more tired or serious than usual. You may want fewer, more important commitments.
- Under strain you may feel low or lose interest in things. Regular sleep, regular meals and time with people you trust help, and a doctor is the right person for any health worry.
- Why: Saturn (discipline, patience, responsibility) moves through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign and the sign after it. The Moon stands for mind, mood and emotions, so Saturn near it tends to slow and sober your inner life.
- Keep a money reserve for the whole phase and write your work or study targets down.
- This phase is a later tradition and is not named in the oldest texts. It is a period asking for steadiness, not a prediction of bad events or an omen.
For a Moon in Virgo (Kanya), Sade Sati is Saturn's passage through Leo, Virgo and Libra, the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon sign. No cycle contains 2027. In this app's computation the first cycle after 2026 runs from 28 August 2036 to 31 August 2044, in six stays with one pause of 191 days. The rule is on the Sade Sati page; the sign itself is described in Virgo, Kanya rashi.
These are calendar dates, not forecasts: everyone born with the Moon in sidereal Virgo shares them, whatever their ascendant or dasha. The Sade Sati calculator checks a birth date.
Dates: every stay of Saturn in Leo, Virgo and Libra
The table lists every stay in the three signs during that cycle, with the pause as a row of its own. When Saturn turns retrograde (vakri) near a sign boundary it steps back across the line, and each crossing gets a row. Degrees are the lowest and highest Saturn reaches in the stay.
| Saturn in | From (UTC) | To (UTC) | Days | Degrees | Phase for a Virgo Moon |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leo | 28 Aug 2036 | 23 Oct 2038 | 786 | 0.00-30.00 | Rising (12th) |
| Virgo | 23 Oct 2038 | 3 Apr 2039 | 163 | 0.00-4.79 | Peak (1st) |
| Leo (re-entered retrograde) | 3 Apr 2039 | 14 Jul 2039 | 101 | 27.95-30.00 | Rising again (12th) |
| Virgo | 14 Jul 2039 | 26 Sep 2041 | 806 | 0.00-30.00 | Peak again (1st) |
| Libra | 26 Sep 2041 | 12 Dec 2043 | 807 | 0.00-30.00 | Setting (2nd) |
| Scorpio (pause) | 12 Dec 2043 | 20 Jun 2044 | 191 | - | Not active (3rd) |
| Libra (re-entered retrograde) | 20 Jun 2044 | 31 Aug 2044 | 72 | 28.98-30.00 | Setting again (2nd) |
Dates are UTC. Four changes fall at or after 18:30 UTC, and so on the following calendar day in India: 3 April 2039 at 20:20 (4 April), 26 September 2041 at 19:08 (27 September, at 00:38, within an hour of midnight), 20 June 2044 at 20:10 (21 June) and 31 August 2044 at 22:11 (1 September). No other change falls within an hour of midnight in India. Other software can differ by hours to a day or two near an ingress; why Sade Sati dates differ between sources explains how.
The peak is split by a visit to Leo. Saturn turns retrograde at 4.79 degrees of Virgo on 8 January 2039, slips back into Leo on 3 April, turns direct at 27.95 degrees of Leo on 24 May (23:55 UTC, so 25 May in India) and returns to Virgo on 14 July. Those 101 days in Leo read as rising phase again.
All cycles between 1990 and 2060
A Virgo Moon has two complete Sade Sati cycles in this app's 1990-2060 scan, and neither is cut off.
| Cycle (first entry to final exit, UTC) | Span | Days inside | Pauses |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 Nov 2006 to 2 Nov 2014 | 2,921 days | 2,731 | One, of 190 days |
| 28 Aug 2036 to 31 Aug 2044 | 2,926 days | 2,735 | One, of 191 days |
Of the four dates, 31 August 2044 (22:11 UTC) is 1 September in India, and 2 November 2014 at 17:50 UTC falls within an hour of midnight in India (23:20 that day). The other two fall before 17:30 UTC.
The 2006 cycle paused early: 190 days with Saturn in Cancer, the 11th, from 7 January 2007, after only 65 days in Leo. Its two Libra stays began on 15 November 2011 (181 days; 18:18 UTC, within an hour of midnight in India, 23:48 that day) and 5 August 2012 (820).
The three phases for a Virgo Moon
The engine names the phases after the three dhaiyas (two-and-a-half-year portions) and shows one sentence beside whichever is active: "A classical ~7.5-year period of intensified pressure and restructuring - traditionally read as a time to consolidate rather than expand, not as an omen" (the engine's wording; the period is not named in BPHS or Saravali, as shown below). The Gochar calculator adds a verdict for Saturn in each sign.
- Rising, Saturn in Leo (12th): 888 days across two stays in the 2036-2044 cycle. Gochara verdict: testing. See Saturn transit in Leo.
- Peak, Saturn in Virgo (1st): 968 days across two stays. Gochara verdict: testing, with the engine's "intensified" flag for the 1st from the Moon, which Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 311) matches with a Tamil palm-leaf reading. See Saturn transit in Virgo.
- Setting, Saturn in Libra (2nd): 879 days across two stays. Gochara verdict: favourable, "steady, disciplined progress". Here the two rule sets part, and the app shows both. See Saturn transit in Libra.
What the texts say, and what they do not
Sade Sati is a later tradition: a search of BPHS (both copies in the library), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras for "sade", "sadhe", "seven and a half" and "dhaiya" finds no passage that names it, and what BPHS and Saravali hold is Saturn's transit read through the Ashtakavarga (BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 70-72 and Ch. 70 Sl. 43-44; Saravali Ch. 53 Sl. 1 and 9-10, whose "benefic dots" are BPHS's Rekhas). The corpus book that names the period is the modern Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, Ch. 7, pp. 311-312), which defines it as Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon, "once in 30 yrs". The Sade Sati page sets out the whole account.
On p. 312 Advanced Predictive Astrology reports a North Indian school of thought that names, for each Moon sign, the portion of Sade Sati with adverse results; its entry for Virgo reads "first 2.5 yrs". The book counts years, not signs. This page reads the first portion as the rising phase, because the engine pairs each of its phases with one dhaiya: Saturn in Leo, 888 days across two stays in the 2036-2044 cycle. The engine ignores the list; house by house, the same signs are read on Saturn transit for Virgo Moon sign.
Saravali Ch. 53 Sl. 9-10 adds that Saturn, like the Moon, gives its transit results while in the end portion of a sign. The text does not say how large that portion is. Both retrograde re-entries in this cycle fall in the last degrees of a sign: Leo from 27.95 to 30.00 degrees (3 April 2039) and Libra from 28.98 to 30.00 (20 June 2044).
Saravali Ch. 53 Sl. 9-10 also qualifies the Ashtakavarga reading by sign: benefic results predominate in a sign of exaltation, own or friendly, and malefic results in debilitation or an enemy's sign. This page applies that only where the sign alone settles Saturn's dignity: Libra, its exaltation sign (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50), in the setting phase. Leo is the Sun's sign and Virgo Mercury's (BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 12 and 13-14), neither Saturn's own nor its debilitation sign; computed with no birth chart, the engine labels Leo an enemy sign for Saturn and Virgo a friendly sign, the natural relation only, as in Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 (Saturn's friends Mercury and Venus; its enemies the Sun, Moon and Mars). Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 14 adds a contrary view, held by some: a planet that is "in exaltation by its entry in retrograde motion from the next Sign" produces no effect. Saturn enters Libra that way, from Scorpio, on 20 June 2044. The engine's verdict looks at the house only.
Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 312) also says that once Saturn enters the 3rd sign from the Moon the person turns "a new leaf". For a Virgo Moon that sign is Scorpio, which Saturn first enters on 12 December 2043 and enters for good on 31 August 2044 (1 September in India) in this app's computation.
What changes the reading for one chart
A phase is a calendar position worked out from the Moon sign alone. The sources name three things it leaves out.
- Saturn's own condition. Advanced Predictive Astrology (pp. 311-312) sets the rule aside for a yogakaraka Saturn well placed with benefic association or aspect, and says the period "does not make much difference" when the Moon is with Saturn at birth. Both belong to the birth chart; see Saturn in Vedic astrology.
- Saturn's Ashtakavarga table (BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 43-44), whose counts for Leo, Virgo and Libra are chart-specific. This BPHS translation calls the favourable marks Rekhas and the unfavourable ones dots; the Ashtakavarga calculator counts the favourable ones and calls them bindus.
- The running dasha. Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 312) calls a Saturn Mahadasha that coincides with Sade Sati the heavier combination. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Timing feature list them.
What to take care of
The later transit writing reads Sade Sati as a testing period. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, pp. 311-312) speaks of "much depression, disappointment" and "lack of interest in any matter in life", one modern author's reading of a transit, not a medical statement. It adds poor concentration in studies; and, early in a career, delayed promotion, an unwelcome transfer, financial loss and quarrels with superiors or subordinates; then tension, travel, threats from enemies and theft. Phaladeepika Ch. 26 Sl. 9, as Advanced Predictive Astrology quotes it (p. 312), gives fatigue, loss of wealth and anger for Saturn's passage through the Janma Rasi, which for a Virgo Moon is Virgo. The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events.
- Money: set savings aside for the whole period, avoid large unsecured loans and read contracts twice before signing.
- Work and study: write down agreed targets, raise a misunderstanding with a senior early and calmly, think a transfer or job change through before accepting it, and keep a steady study routine.
- Health and travel: book the check-up you have been postponing, rest when you are tired, drive with care on long trips and keep documents and valuables safe on the road. This is not a diagnosis - see a doctor for any symptom.
- Mind: keep regular sleep and meals and stay in touch with people you trust. If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India).
Saturn's other two named positions from a Virgo Moon have their own pages: Ardha Ashtama Shani and Ashtama Shani. The year 2027 is in 2027 for Virgo Moon sign; the term is in the glossary as Sade Sati.
- Is Saturn in Scorpio from 12 December 2043 still Sade Sati for a Virgo Moon?
- Not by the engine's rule. Scorpio is the 3rd sign from Virgo, so the check reads not active for the 191 days to 20 June 2044 (21 June in India). Saturn then returns to Libra, retrograde, and the setting phase resumes.
- Why is the peak of a Virgo Moon's 2036-2044 cycle split by a visit to Leo?
- Saturn turns retrograde in Virgo on 8 January 2039 and falls back into Leo on 3 April (4 April in India), then re-enters Virgo on 14 July. The peak stays are 163 and 806 days, 968 in the helper's total; the 101 days in Leo count as rising phase.
- Is the Libra stay from 20 June 2044 the case Saravali Ch. 5 Sl. 14 describes?
- It fits the wording: Saturn enters Libra, its exaltation sign, in retrograde motion from Scorpio, the next sign, and turns direct at 28.98 degrees on 27 July 2044. Saravali reports a view, held by some, that the effect is then nil; the engine does not apply it.
- How did the Virgo Moon's 2006-2014 cycle differ in shape?
- Its 190-day pause came early, from 7 January 2007, where the 2036-2044 pause comes late. Its setting phase was 1,001 days in two Libra stays, against 879 days in the later cycle.
