In plain words
- For a Leo Moon, Saturn's 7½-year phase (Sade Sati) is Saturn's time in Cancer, Leo and Virgo. It tends to ask for patience and steady habits.
- The phase comes in three parts of about two and a half years. In the first, Saturn is in Cancer, your 12th house (expenses, rest, letting go). In the middle, Saturn is in Leo, over your Moon sign (your mind and emotions). In the last, Saturn is in Virgo, your 2nd house (money, family, speech). This phase is not running in 2027; the next one comes later.
- The app reads the first two parts as testing and the last as steadier: slow, disciplined progress. The phase tends to bring a wish to save money, read agreements twice, keep targets in writing and avoid rash moves in work and money. Saturn can also pause for a few months and return, because it moves backwards for part of each year.
- In daily life, you may feel more tired or serious than usual. You may want fewer, more important commitments.
- Under strain you may feel low or lose interest in things. Regular sleep, regular meals and time with people you trust help, and a doctor is the right person for any health worry.
- Why: Saturn (discipline, patience, responsibility) moves through the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign and the sign after it. The Moon stands for mind, mood and emotions, so Saturn near it tends to slow and sober your inner life.
- Keep a money reserve for the whole phase and write your work or study targets down.
- This phase is a later tradition and is not named in the oldest texts. It is a period asking for steadiness, not a prediction of bad events or an omen.
For a Moon in Leo (Simha), Sade Sati is Saturn's passage through Cancer, Leo and Virgo, the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the Moon sign. No cycle contains 2027. In this app's computation the first cycle after 2026 runs from 12 July 2034 to 26 September 2041, in five stays and with no pause. The rule, with the dates for all twelve Moon signs, is on the Sade Sati page; the sign itself is described in Leo, Simha rashi.
Nothing here says what will happen to anyone. Everyone born with the Moon in sidereal Leo shares these dates, whatever their ascendant, dasha or circumstances. The Sade Sati calculator checks a birth date.
Dates: every stay of Saturn in Cancer, Leo and Virgo
The table lists every stay in the three signs during that cycle. Where Saturn turns retrograde (vakri) near a sign boundary it can step back across the line, so each crossing is a row of its own. Degrees are the lowest and highest Saturn reaches in the stay.
| Saturn in | From (UTC) | To (UTC) | Days | Degrees | Phase for a Leo Moon |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cancer | 12 Jul 2034 | 28 Aug 2036 | 777 | 0.00-30.00 | Rising (12th) |
| Leo | 28 Aug 2036 | 23 Oct 2038 | 786 | 0.00-30.00 | Peak (1st) |
| Virgo | 23 Oct 2038 | 3 Apr 2039 | 163 | 0.00-4.79 | Setting (2nd) |
| Leo (re-entered retrograde) | 3 Apr 2039 | 14 Jul 2039 | 101 | 27.95-30.00 | Peak again (1st) |
| Virgo | 14 Jul 2039 | 26 Sep 2041 | 806 | 0.00-30.00 | Setting again (2nd) |
Dates are UTC. Three changes fall at or after 18:30 UTC, and so on the following calendar day in India: 12 July 2034 at 23:09 (13 July), 3 April 2039 at 20:20 (4 April) and 26 September 2041 at 19:08 (27 September, at 00:38, within an hour of midnight). No other change falls within an hour of midnight in India. Other software can differ by hours to a day or two near an ingress; why Sade Sati dates differ between sources explains how.
- There is no pause, but the second half shuffles between the peak and the setting phase. Saturn turns retrograde at 4.79 degrees of Virgo on 8 January 2039, slips back into Leo on 3 April, turns direct at 27.95 degrees of Leo on 24 May (23:55 UTC, so 25 May in India) and enters Virgo again on 14 July.
- The only retrograde crossing, on 3 April 2039, runs between two signs inside the window, so the Sade Sati check reads active on each of the cycle's 2,633 days.
All cycles between 1990 and 2060
A Leo Moon has two complete Sade Sati cycles in this app's 1990-2060 scan, and neither is cut off.
| Cycle (first entry to final exit, UTC) | Span | Days inside | Pauses |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7 Sep 2004 to 5 Aug 2012 | 2,889 days | 2,572 | Two, of 136 and 181 days |
| 12 Jul 2034 to 26 Sep 2041 | 2,633 days | 2,633 | None |
Two of the four dates fall at or after 18:30 UTC and so on the following day in India: 12 July 2034 (13 July) and 26 September 2041 (27 September). The other two fall before 17:30 UTC.
The 2004 cycle was more broken up. Its stays began in Cancer on 7 September 2004 (126 days), 27 May 2005 (525) and 7 January 2007 (190); in Leo on 3 November 2006 (65) and 17 July 2007 (787); and in Virgo on 10 September 2009 (796) and 14 May 2012 (82). Two pauses came between them: 136 days with Saturn in Gemini, the 11th, from 11 January 2005, and 181 days in Libra, the 3rd, from 15 November 2011 (18:18 UTC, within an hour of midnight in India: 23:48 that day).
The three phases for a Leo Moon
The engine names the phases after the three dhaiyas (two-and-a-half-year portions) and shows one sentence beside whichever is active: "A classical ~7.5-year period of intensified pressure and restructuring - traditionally read as a time to consolidate rather than expand, not as an omen" (the engine's wording; the period is not named in BPHS or Saravali, as shown below). The Gochar calculator adds a verdict for Saturn in each sign.
- Rising, Saturn in Cancer (12th): 777 days in one stay in the 2034-2041 cycle. Gochara verdict: testing. See Saturn transit in Cancer.
- Peak, Saturn in Leo (1st): 888 days across two stays. Gochara verdict: testing, with the engine's "intensified" flag, because its table pairs Saturn with the 1st from the Moon; Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, p. 311) gives the same pairing from a Tamil palm-leaf reading. See Saturn transit in Leo.
- Setting, Saturn in Virgo (2nd): 968 days across two stays. Gochara verdict: favourable, "steady, disciplined progress". Here the two rule sets part, and the app shows both. See Saturn transit in Virgo.
What the texts say, and what they do not
Sade Sati is a later tradition: a search of BPHS (both copies in the library), Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras for "sade", "sadhe", "seven and a half" and "dhaiya" finds no passage that names it, and what BPHS and Saravali hold is Saturn's transit read through the Ashtakavarga (BPHS Ch. 66 Sl. 70-72 and Ch. 70 Sl. 43-44; Saravali Ch. 53 Sl. 1 and 9-10, whose "benefic dots" are BPHS's Rekhas). The corpus book that names the period is the modern Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, Ch. 7, pp. 311-312), which defines it as Saturn in the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon, "once in 30 yrs". The Sade Sati page sets out the whole account.
On p. 312 Advanced Predictive Astrology reports a school of thought in North India that names, for each Moon sign, the portion of Sade Sati with adverse results; its entry for Leo reads "first 2.5 yrs". The book counts years, not signs. This page reads the first portion as the rising phase, because the engine pairs each of its three phases with one dhaiya: Saturn in Cancer, 777 days in one stay in the 2034-2041 cycle. The engine ignores the list; house by house, the same signs are read on Saturn transit for Leo Moon sign.
Saravali Ch. 53 Sl. 9-10 adds that Saturn, like the Moon, gives its transit results while in the end portion of a sign. The text does not say how large that portion is. The cycle's one retrograde re-entry, to Leo from 3 April 2039, is spent between 27.95 and 30.00 degrees.
Saravali Ch. 53 Sl. 9-10 also qualifies the Ashtakavarga reading by sign: benefic results predominate in a sign of exaltation, own or friendly, and malefic results in debilitation or an enemy's sign. This page applies that only where the sign alone settles Saturn's dignity, and none of the three does. Cancer is the Moon's sign, Leo the Sun's and Virgo Mercury's (BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 10-11, 12 and 13-14); Saturn owns Capricorn and Aquarius (Ch. 4 Sl. 19-20 and 21-21½) and is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries (Ch. 3 Sl. 49-50). Computed with no birth chart, the engine labels Cancer and Leo enemy signs for Saturn and Virgo a friendly sign: the natural relation only, as in Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 28-29 (Saturn's friends Mercury and Venus; its enemies the Sun, Moon and Mars), which a birth chart can change (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 56). The engine's verdict looks at the house only.
Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 312) also says that once Saturn enters the 3rd sign from the Moon the person turns "a new leaf". For a Leo Moon that sign is Libra, which Saturn enters on 26 September 2041 (27 September in India) and holds to 12 December 2043 in this app's computation.
What changes the reading for one chart
A phase is a calendar position worked out from the Moon sign alone. The sources name three things it leaves out.
- Saturn's own condition. Advanced Predictive Astrology (pp. 311-312) sets the rule aside for a yogakaraka Saturn that is well placed with benefic association or aspect, and says the period "does not make much difference" when the Moon is with Saturn at birth. Both belong to the birth chart; see Saturn in Vedic astrology.
- Saturn's Ashtakavarga table (BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 43-44). The counts for Cancer, Leo and Virgo are chart-specific. This BPHS translation calls the favourable marks Rekhas and the unfavourable ones dots; the Ashtakavarga calculator counts the favourable ones and calls them bindus.
- The running dasha. Advanced Predictive Astrology (p. 312) calls a Saturn Mahadasha that coincides with Sade Sati the heavier combination. The Vimshottari Dasha calculator and the Timing feature show the periods.
What to take care of
The later transit writing reads Sade Sati as a testing period and names the areas. Advanced Predictive Astrology (Vol. II, pp. 311-312) speaks of "much depression, disappointment" and "lack of interest in any matter in life", one modern author's reading of a transit, not a medical statement. It adds poor concentration in studies; and, early in a career, delayed promotion, an unwelcome transfer, financial loss and quarrels with superiors or subordinates; then tension, travel, threats from enemies and theft. Phaladeepika Ch. 26 Sl. 9, as Advanced Predictive Astrology quotes it (p. 312), gives fatigue, loss of wealth and anger for Saturn's passage through the Janma Rasi, which for a Leo Moon is Leo. The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events.
- Money: set savings aside for the whole period, avoid large unsecured loans and read contracts twice before signing.
- Work and study: agree targets in writing, raise a misunderstanding with a senior early and calmly, think a transfer or job change through before accepting it, and keep a steady study routine.
- Health and travel: book the check-up you have been postponing, rest when you are tired, drive with care on long trips and keep documents and valuables safe on the road. This is not a diagnosis - see a doctor for any symptom.
- Mind: keep regular sleep and meals and stay in touch with people you trust. If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India).
Saturn's other two named positions from a Leo Moon have their own pages: Ardha Ashtama Shani and Ashtama Shani. The movements of 2027, with Jupiter and Rahu, are in 2027 for Leo Moon sign; the term is in the glossary as Sade Sati.
- Is Saturn's return to Leo on 3 April 2039 the start of a second Sade Sati?
- No, it is the same cycle. Saturn has been in Virgo, the 2nd sign, since 23 October 2038; on 3 April 2039 (4 April in India) it falls back into Leo, the 1st, and on 14 July it moves into Virgo again. Both signs are inside the window.
- Why did the Leo Moon's 2004-2012 cycle pause twice when the 2034-2041 cycle does not?
- A pause appears when Saturn leaves the three signs and comes back: into Gemini, the 11th, for 136 days from 11 January 2005, and into Libra, the 3rd, for 181 days from 15 November 2011. In 2034-2041 the one retrograde crossing is between Leo and Virgo, so there is no gap.
- How many days does Saturn spend in Leo itself in the 2034-2041 cycle?
- The helper totals 888 days, in two stays: 786 days from 28 August 2036 and 101 from 3 April 2039. The rounded rows add to 887 because the helper sums in minutes before rounding.
- On which Indian date does the 2034-2041 cycle begin?
- In UTC it begins on 12 July 2034 at 23:09, which is 04:39 on 13 July in India. Another ayanamsa or algorithm can move an ingress by hours to a day or two.
