If you are asking because you feel low, that is worth taking seriously, and you do not have to work it out alone. "Why do I feel low?" is a question for a doctor, a counsellor or a friend before it is a question for a chart. The classical texts do say something that touches the mind: they name the Moon as the mind, Saturn as grief and the 4th house as happiness, and they list periods in which they expect strain. This page sets out what they say, how to look at those factors in your own chart, and where the reading stops. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.
What the classical texts say about the mind and low spirits
The Moon, Saturn and the 4th house
The texts do not treat low mood as a condition. Words such as "dejected" or "depressed in spirits" do appear, but only as single items in long lists tied to particular placements (Saravali's verses on planets in signs, for example). What the texts do is assign meanings to planets and houses. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 lists what the grahas govern: the Sun the soul, the Moon the mind, Mars strength, Mercury speech, Jupiter knowledge and happiness, Venus potency and Saturn grief. BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 repeats it (the Moon "mind, wisdom, joy and mother", Saturn "grief"), and Ch. 11 Sl. 2 places happiness and grief under the 1st house as well. Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 1-2 gives nearly the same list and adds a rule: where the planet that stands for a quality is strong, that quality is strong, and where it is weak the quality is meagre, "but in the case of Saturn it is different", without saying how.
The idea reaches the houses. The 4th house, Bandhu Bhava, has happiness in its list (Ch. 11 Sl. 5: conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings), and Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 gives the Moon as its fixed significator, its karaka. Ch. 12 Sl. 11 adds that effects are judged from the Moon as well as from the Lagna, and Ch. 66 Sl. 13-15 repeats that the houses are read from Lagn and Candr. So when the question is about peace of mind, the places the texts look are the Moon, the 4th house with its lord, and Saturn.
These are lists of meanings, not measurements. "Saturn denotes grief" says what Saturn stands for in the system's vocabulary. It does not say that Saturn causes the sorrow of a particular person, and this page does not read it that way.
Timing: the Moon's Dasha, and Saturn's transit from the Moon
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 16-22 reads the Moon's Dasha well when the Moon is exalted or in her own sign, in an angle or in the 5th, 9th or 11th, and joined or aspected by benefics. Sl. 23-26 give the other side: a waning or debilitated Moon brings loss of wealth, and the Moon with malefics adds "mental tension" (the same line has a harsher word this page leaves out) and trouble from the mother and from employees. Even there the text is mixed: a strong Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th gives "troubles and good times off and on". Sl. 3-4 add that a graha's effects arrive at the start, middle or end of its Dasha according to its drekkana, so a Dasha is not one block of one kind of time.
Saturn's passage over the Moon is the transit the later tradition links with low spirits. This app's Sade Sati is the period when transiting Saturn is in the 12th, 1st or 2nd sign from your natal Moon, and Ardha Ashtama Sani and Ashtama Sani are Saturn in the 4th and the 8th from it. Its code takes the first from S. Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology and the other two from Chatterjee, and neither BPHS nor Saravali mentions any of them. Chatterjee (Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, pp. 311-313) writes that Sade Sati brings low spirits, disappointment and loss of interest, and that Saturn in the 4th from the Moon, since the 4th rules happiness of mind, brings unhappiness at home. That is one modern author's reading of a transit, not a medical statement. The same pages say the difficulty differs from chart to chart and with the stage of life, that it is softer where Saturn is a yogakaraka or well placed with benefic company, and that it makes little difference when the Moon sits with Saturn. The app words these periods as a time to consolidate, not an omen.
How to check this in your own chart
- The Moon's sign: the Moon sign calculator gives your Moon sign and nakshatra from the date alone. Without a birth time the chart is cast at local noon and the Moon covers about 13 degrees in a day, so near a sign boundary the sign can change within the date; the result says when it did.
- The Moon's condition: the birth chart calculator shows its sign, house and dignity, and the Moon phase calculator gives the tithi, the half of the month (paksha) and the phase at birth, which is what BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 classifies.
- The 4th house: its sign, its lord, the lord's house and dignity, and any planet in the 4th.
- Saturn: where it stands in your birth chart, and where it is now counted from your Moon. The Sade Sati and Ashtama Sani calculators say whether you are in one of the periods; the Gochar calculator shows Saturn's house from the Moon with the app's label: favourable, neutral or testing.
- The Dasha: the Vimshottari dasha calculator gives the running Mahadasha and Antardasha with dates. Note whether either belongs to the Moon, to Saturn or to the 4th lord.
- Weigh the findings together, then set them beside your own calendar. If a hard stretch in your life (a loss, a move, a change of work, a long illness) explains how you feel, the chart adds nothing. Either way, if the feeling stays, speak to someone rather than reading more charts.
A sample run
Take 17 June 1994, 20:00, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026 (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator; the Sade Sati and Gochar calculators use the day you open them). The Moon is in Virgo at 12.47 degrees, in Hasta, in the 10th house, in a friendly sign, and was waxing at birth: tithi 9 of the bright half. No planet shares the Moon's sign. The Lagna is Sagittarius at 12.41 degrees, so the 4th is Pisces, and its lord, Jupiter, is in Libra in the 11th house, with a neutral dignity. Saturn, then in Pisces, was in the 7th sign from this Moon, which the Gochar calculator labels neutral, and Sade Sati, Ardha Ashtama Sani and Ashtama Sani were all inactive. The running Mahadasha was Rahu's (10 August 2009 to 10 August 2027) and the Antardasha Mars's (22 July 2026 to 10 August 2027), neither of them the Moon's, Saturn's or Jupiter's. The yogas the birth chart calculator lists all carry favourable readings, Sunapha on the Moon among them, and the dosha calculators find none. On the factors this page looks at, the texts flag nothing. The Gochar calculator that day labelled one transit testing, Ketu in the 12th from the Moon, which this page does not weigh. None of this says how the person feels: someone with this chart can feel low, and someone with a harder chart can feel well.
Common misreadings
- "Saturn is on my Moon, so this is Saturn's doing." Sade Sati is a named window of Saturn's transit taken from later books. BPHS and Saravali have no such rule, and Chatterjee says the effect differs from chart to chart. A range of dates is not a cause.
- "My Moon is waning or debilitated, so my mind is weak." BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts a decreasing Moon among the natural malefics, a label for the Moon's nature in the system, and the translator's note adds that she turns benefic with a benefic's company or aspect. Debilitation is a dignity label used to weigh a planet's strength. Neither is a statement about anyone's mind. The Bhrigu Sutras' verses on the Moon in the twelve houses are mostly about wealth, relatives, comforts, health and fortunes; mental remarks appear now and then (the Moon in the 1st is "unsteady mentally", in the 5th "worried") as single items among many.
- "My Dasha is a bad one, so all those years will be hard." A Mahadasha is long (the Moon's is 10 years and Saturn's 19, Ch. 46 Sl. 15), and the text itself divides it, placing a graha's effects at the start, middle or end by its drekkana (Ch. 47 Sl. 3-4) and calling a strong Moon in the 6th, 8th or 12th a mix of troubles and good times.
What astrology cannot tell you about how you feel
It cannot say why you feel low. Low mood has many ordinary causes: sleep, health, loss, overwork, loneliness, a hard year, and sometimes conditions that a doctor or counsellor can recognise and treat. None of these is in a chart. The texts name dejection only as one item in lists tied to particular placements, and none treats low mood as a condition with a cause and a course. This app does not detect or diagnose any mental-health condition; it is not a mental-health tool.
It cannot tell grief from tiredness, or a passing mood from something that needs care. A reading with several flags does not mean the feeling will last, and a reading with none does not mean it is not real. The Moon's sign depends on the date and, near a boundary, on the time, so wrong birth data gives a wrong Moon (birth time unknown).
If you are asking because you feel low, the useful next step is a person: someone you trust, a doctor, or Tele-MANAS. The pages on restlessness, loneliness and overthinking look at neighbouring factors in the same way and end in the same place.
What to take care of
BPHS Ch. 47 Sl. 23-26 reads a waning or debilitated Moon as a Dasha of lost wealth, and the Moon with malefics as one of "mental tension" and trouble with the mother and with employees. The antardasha chapters repeat the note: "mental agony" appears among the results of many unfavourable sub-periods (for example Ch. 52 Sl. 7-10 and 69-73). Chatterjee (pp. 311-313) reads Sade Sati and Saturn in the 4th from the Moon as periods of low spirits and unhappiness at home. The areas named are the mind, home and family, and money. Read them as periods that call for steadiness, not as a forecast of how you will feel.
- Keep the basics steady: regular sleep, meals, daylight and some movement. They are not a treatment, but low spirits are harder to carry without them.
- Talk to someone you trust about how you are, and say so early rather than waiting for it to pass.
- Where you can, put off large, hard-to-reverse decisions, such as resigning or a big purchase, until you feel more settled. This never means staying anywhere you are unsafe: if you are, call 112.
- Keep up routine health check-ups, and see a doctor about any symptom, such as disturbed sleep or appetite; this is not a diagnosis.
- Do not wait for a transit or a Dasha to end before asking for help. A period's dates come from arithmetic; how you feel does not follow them, and support can help at any point.
- If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India).
Frequently asked questions
- Which planet governs the mind?
- The Moon. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 12-13 and Saravali Ch. 4 Sl. 1-2 both call it the mind. That is a signification, what the Moon stands for in the system, and not a claim that the Moon causes how any one person feels. See Moon sign for how the app finds yours.
- Does Sade Sati make people depressed?
- No chart factor can be shown to cause how you feel. This app does not treat a transit as a cause. Depression is a health condition that a doctor or counsellor can assess and treat. Neither BPHS nor Saravali mentions Sade Sati; Chatterjee, a modern author, links it with low spirits, and in the same passage says the effect varies with the chart and the stage of life and is softer in several cases.
- I have felt this way for weeks. Should I check my chart first?
- No. Talk to someone you trust, or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India), first. The chart can wait; it cannot assess how you are.
- Is a weak or waning Moon the reason?
- No. The calculators show the Moon's dignity and phase as classical labels. BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 11 counts a decreasing Moon among the malefics, a label for its nature in the system, and the translator's note adds that such a Moon turns benefic with a benefic's company or aspect. Neither label is a finding about your mind.
- Will I feel better when Sade Sati ends?
- Sade Sati's dates can be computed; how you feel does not follow them. Chatterjee (p. 312) writes that once Saturn enters the 3rd sign from the Moon, which is where Sade Sati ends, a person turns "a new leaf", but that is one author's expectation, not a schedule. If you feel low now, talk to someone now rather than waiting for a date.
- Does this app detect depression?
- No. It does not diagnose or treat any mental or physical condition, and it is not a mental-health tool. If you are worried about how you feel, speak to a doctor or counsellor.
