When will I get promoted? What the classical texts look at in a kundli, and what they cannot date

A kundli does not hold a date for a promotion. What BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu house list and a modern book read for position and advancement: the 10th house and its lord, the Dashamsa, the sub-period lists and Saturn's transit, and how to check each in your own chart.

In short

A kundli does not date a promotion. The classical texts read the 10th house, its lord and the Dashamsa for position and honour, and list sub-periods in which a position is gained, in BPHS each on a condition about the sub-lord; a modern book adds a list tying promotion to particular dasha periods. No text names a month.

A promotion depends on an employer, a budget and an appraisal cycle as much as on anything a chart can hold, so the honest first answer is that a kundli cannot date one. The classical texts read the 10th house, its lord and the Dashamsa for position and honour, and list sub-periods in which a position is gained, each on a condition about where the sub-lord stands. A modern book adds a list that ties promotions to particular periods and to Saturn's transit. This page sets those readings out, shows how to check them in your own chart, and says where they stop. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.

What the classical texts say about position and promotion

The house, the lord and the Dashamsa

BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 gives the 10th house "royalty (authority), place, profession (livelihood), honour"; the words nearest to rank are authority, place and honour. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 reads "power (and position)" from the Dashamsa, and Saravali Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13 gives Jupiter "position". Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 2 says the 10th, counted from the stronger of the Ascendant and the Moon, prospers if its lord has strength. Neither BPHS Ch. 11 nor Saravali Ch. 33 uses the word "promotion". It appears in the house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras, the editor's modern material, which gives the 10th "permanency (in service), promotion, advancement, appointment, profession".

Dasha: position appears in lists, with conditions

BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 reads "recognition from and awards by the Government" in the Dasha of the lord of the 10th. Sl. 14-17½ is the nearest to a rise: "acquisition of a kingdom" in the Dashas of the Lagna lord and the 10th lord, if the 10th lord is in the Lagna and the Lagna lord is in the 10th. Saravali Ch. 42 gives sub-period effects for its own scheme, the Moola Dasa of Ch. 41, whose periods follow the planets' strength and houses rather than the Vimshottari order the app computes, so they cannot be read off the dasha calculator. There the Mercury sub-period in the Moon's Dasha brings "positions" (Sl. 20) and the Jupiter sub-period in Saturn's Dasha "a high position" (Sl. 52), modified by exaltation, fall and the like (Sl. 54-57). BPHS Ch. 52-60, which follow the Vimshottari order, give the conditions:

Sub-period lord (Dasha lord)BPHSThe sloka asks the sub-lord to beWhat it lists, among much else
Venus (Rahu)Ch. 55 Sl. 46-47½With strength in a Kendra, a Trikona or the 11th"Attainment of a high position in government", recognition from the government, great enjoyment
Jupiter (Rahu)Ch. 55 Sl. 8-12½Exalted, in own sign, in own or exalted Navamsa, or in a Kendra or Trikona from the Lagna"Gain of position", cordial relations with the king, regular increase in wealth and property
Saturn (Jupiter)Ch. 56 Sl. 8-11½Exalted, in own sign, or in a Kendra or Trikona with strength"Position", clothes, ornaments, wealth, an audience with the king
Three of the slokas that name a position. Each has a counterpart for the opposite placement that lists adverse results.

Where two sources differ, they differ. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 reads the Dasha of the lord of the 6th as one of danger from enemies and ill health (not a diagnosis; see a doctor for any symptom), while Chatterjee's list, below, says promotions may be anticipated in the periods of the 6th lord. Ch. 48 Sl. 18-20 also reads the Dashas of the 3rd, 6th and 11th lords, and of grahas placed in those houses, as unfavourable, and Chatterjee's own list of inauspicious periods (pp. 122-123) opens with the period of the 3rd, 6th or 11th lord.

A modern list, and Saturn's transit

Dr S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, a modern book among this site's sources, lists on p. 122 rules for good periods, several credited to articles in The Times of Astrology. Three concern promotion: the periods of the lord of the 6th, or of a planet in the 6th (item 16); the period of the lord of the 9th, or of a planet in the 10th (item 17); and the periods of planets "placed powerfully" in the 3rd or 11th (item 18). On p. 311 he rates Saturn's transit good from the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon and the 10th a period of gain. He also writes that when Sade Sati falls at the beginning of a career it "may delay or deny chances of promotion", with a transfer to a place one may not like, financial loss and quarrels with superiors or subordinates. The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events.

Sade Sati, Ardha Ashtama Sani and Ashtama Sani are later traditions: BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not mention them. This app takes Sade Sati from S. Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology and the other two from Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (pp. 311-313). BPHS uses the word "promotion" once, for the Moon's Sukshma Dasha within Ketu's Pratyantar Dasha (Ch. 62 Sl. 68), a fourth-level subdivision this app does not compute; otherwise no older text times a promotion, and the lists above are the nearest.

How to check this in your own chart

  1. Open the birth chart calculator and note the 10th house, any graha in it, and the 10th lord (house lord): sign, house and dignity. Also note the 6th lord, the 9th lord and the grahas in the 3rd and 11th, which Chatterjee's list uses. An uncertain birth time can move the 10th house (birth time unknown).
  2. Count the 10th from the Moon (the Moon sign calculator gives the sign) and open the Dashamsa calculator for the D10 Lagna.
  3. The Vimshottari dasha calculator gives the running Mahadasha and Antardasha with dates. Does a sloka name a position for this pair, and does the sub-lord stand where it asks? Does the period belong to a planet on Chatterjee's list?
  4. The Sade Sati calculator and the Gochar calculator show Saturn's house from your Moon with the label from this app's table, which its code takes from S. Kannan: favourable in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th, testing in the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th, and neutral elsewhere, the 10th included, which Chatterjee calls a period of gain.
  5. The Career and Money calculator ranks the grahas that own your career axis and lists dated income windows: periods whose lord rules, occupies or aspects the 2nd, 10th or 11th and scores supportive or strong. They concern income and are timing for effort, not promotion dates. That test is a modern convention: none of this site's classical sources (BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras) states it, and the app uses it as a way of looking, not as a verse.
  6. Weigh the findings together, then set them beside what no chart holds: your employer's appraisal cycle, the openings above you, and your results.

A sample run

Take 9 March 1993, 04:52, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026 (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator; the dasha, Gochar and Career and Money calculators use the day you open them). The Lagna is Capricorn at 18.47 degrees, so the 10th is Libra, with no planet in it. Its lord, Venus, stands in Pisces at 26.15 degrees in the 3rd house, exalted. Mercury rules the 6th and the 9th and is in the 2nd, combust and retrograde. Mars is in the 6th, Rahu in the 11th, and the 10th from the Moon, in Virgo, is Gemini, which holds Mars. The D10 Lagna is Pisces. The Rahu Mahadasha runs from 8 June 2013 to 9 June 2031, with Venus's Antardasha from 26 December 2024 to 27 December 2027. In BPHS, Ch. 55 Sl. 46-47½, the one that names a high position in government, asks Venus to be with strength in a Kendra, Trikona or the 11th; Venus is in the 3rd, so that condition is not met. Sl. 48-50½, which lists profits in business and the king's favour, asks for exaltation or own sign; Venus is exalted, so it is met. On Chatterjee's list, item 18 points to Venus, in the 3rd and exalted, and Rahu in the 11th, though how powerful Rahu is, is a judgement, since the app gives the nodes no dignity; items 16 and 17 point to Mercury, whose sub-period ran from 21 May 2021 to 8 December 2023, and to Mars in the 6th, whose sub-period runs from 21 May 2030 to 9 June 2031. Saturn, then in Pisces, was in the 7th from the Moon, which the Gochar calculator labels neutral, and none of Sade Sati, Ardha Ashtama Sani or Ashtama Sani was running. The app flags Kendradhipathya Dosha (Mild, Venus owning the 10th but not the 1st), which this page does not weigh. The Career and Money calculator names Venus first on the career axis (the 10th lord and the strongest graha by Shad Bala), Mercury second and Jupiter third, and lists Venus's running Antardasha, December 2024 to December 2027, as a strong income window because Venus rules the 10th. It lists the Sun's Antardasha that follows, December 2027 to November 2028, among its loss-risk windows, "windows to be deliberate in"; this page does not weigh it. On the factors this page looks at, one high-position sloka is not met and one profit sloka is; none of them dates a promotion.

Common misreadings

  • "My 10th lord's Dasha is when I get promoted." Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 reads recognition from the Government in that Dasha, and the "position" slokas are keyed to the sub-lord's placement, not to its lordship.
  • "The 6th lord's period brings promotion." That is Chatterjee's modern list; BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 reads that Dasha as danger from enemies. They do not agree.
  • "Sade Sati means no promotion." Chatterjee writes "may delay or deny" for a career at its beginning, and also that the effect differs with the stage of life, and he excepts a chart where Saturn is a yogakaraka, well placed, with benefic association or aspect. It is a later tradition, not a verse.
  • "A strong 10th lord guarantees one." Saravali says the effects prosper with a strong lord; it does not say when, or that anyone will hire, review or promote.

What astrology cannot tell you about a promotion

No chart knows your employer's structure, the openings above you, the budget, your manager, your results or the appraisal date. A promotion is decided by people against criteria a kundli does not contain. The income windows in the Career and Money calculator concern the dasha lord's hold on the 2nd, 10th and 11th houses, not rank. A strong 10th house makes none of those facts easier, and a testing transit makes none harder. Birth data limits the reading too: the Lagna, the 10th house and the Dashamsa need a reliable birth time and place.

For the stage before this one, see when will I get a job; for a stalled career, why is my career stuck; for the app's career reading, the Career and Money feature.

What to take care of

Chatterjee (p. 311) reads Sade Sati at the start of a career as a time that may delay or deny promotion and bring a transfer, financial loss and quarrels at work. BPHS Ch. 60 Sl. 49-50 and Ch. 56 Sl. 12-14 name loss of position or employment when the sub-lord stands in the 6th, 8th or 12th (counted from the Lagna or the Dasha lord, as each sloka says) or in other adverse places. The areas named are work, money and relations with colleagues. Read them as a reason to be careful in a slow or tense stretch at work, not as a forecast.

  • Ask your manager in writing what the next level needs and by when, and keep a dated record of your results.
  • Read any transfer letter, revised contract or appraisal form twice before you sign it, and keep copies.
  • Keep some savings aside for a slow patch rather than counting on a raise by a date.
  • Talk through a missed promotion with your manager or a mentor before you react to it.

Frequently asked questions

Can a kundli tell me when I will be promoted?
No. The older texts read the 10th house, its lord and the Dashamsa for position and list sub-periods in which a position is gained on conditions about the sub-lord. A modern book adds a list of periods. None names a month.
Is the 6th lord's period a promotion period?
Chatterjee's list says promotions may be anticipated in the periods of the 6th lord or a planet in the 6th (p. 122). BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 2-4 reads the Dasha of the 6th lord as danger from enemies and ill health (not a diagnosis). The two do not agree, and neither is a date.
Does Sade Sati stop a promotion?
Not in any verse: BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not mention Sade Sati. Chatterjee writes that at the beginning of a career it may delay or deny promotion, and that the effect differs from chart to chart. The calculator says only whether it is running.
Does the Career and Money calculator show my promotion date?
No. It lists dasha periods in which the lord holds the 2nd, 10th or 11th house and scores well. Its note calls them timing for effort, when to push, negotiate or switch.
Which house shows promotion?
The 10th. BPHS gives it authority, place and honour; the house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras adds "promotion, advancement, appointment". The 6th is tied to service by the same modern list, not by BPHS Ch. 11.
What if I do not know my birth time?
The Moon-based steps work from the date alone. The Lagna, the 10th house, the Dashamsa and the Career and Money calculator need a reliable time and place.

A birth time is optional. Without one this is read at local noon on your birth date - and the Moon moves about 13 degrees in a day, so add the time if you know it.

No place is asked for on this page, so the time is read as Indian Standard Time (IST). Born outside India? Run it on its own page, where you can add the place.
