When will I get married? What the classical texts look at in a kundli, and what they cannot date

A kundli does not carry a date for a marriage. What BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras actually read for it: the 7th house, its lord and Venus, the dasha lists, the age verses, and how to check each in your own chart.

In short

A kundli does not date a marriage. The classical texts read the 7th house, its lord and Venus for how well the matter is supported, and name dasha and transit periods in which marriage appears among the possible results, but no verse turns them into a date. The few verses that give ages each need one particular combination of placements, and several of them name childhood ages.

"When will I get married?" is the question a chart is asked most often and can answer least. A kundli does not hold a date for a marriage. The classical texts read the 7th house, its lord and Venus for how well the matter is supported, and look to dasha and transit periods for when a theme is active. This page sets out what they say and how to read the same factors in your own chart. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.

What the classical texts say about marriage and its timing

The house, the lord and the significator

BPHS reads marriage through the 7th house, in Ch. 18, the chapter on Yuvati Bhava. Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 gives every house a fixed significator, a karaka, and for the 7th it is Venus; Saravali (Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13) and the introduction printed with the Bhrigu Sutras also name Venus for marriage.

BPHS and Saravali were written for a male native and speak of "the wife"; this page reads the 7th as spouse or partner, as the house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras does ("partner in life (wife or husband)"). BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 2 says the rules given for men apply to women too, with the 7th read for the husband. The significator for a woman's chart is not settled: the English of BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 18-21 names Venus for the husband, while the Bhrigu Sutras' introduction to the Sun names the Sun and adds that another school names Jupiter.

What the texts examine when they read marriage. Paraphrased; numbering follows the English translations listed on the sources page.

Read in order, Ch. 18 is a set of tests of quality, not a calendar. Sl. 1 gives full happiness through marriage when the 7th lord is in its own sign or exalted. Sl. 2 reads a 7th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th as a strain on the spouse's well-being, unless it is in its own sign or exalted. Sl. 4-5 and 16 look at what joins or aspects the lord and the house, and Sl. 18 needs three conditions at once. No verse in the chapter says a marriage will not take place. The sources page lists the translations.

The age verses, and why they are not used

BPHS does give ages. Ch. 18 Sl. 22-34 are thirteen verses, each tying a year of marriage to one combination of placements; the first gives the age of 5 or 9, and only the last five (Sl. 30-34) reach ages between 22 and 33. Sl. 40-41 add a sequence of three marriages. The text gives no rule for a chart that fits none of them. The Bhrigu Sutras attach timing to single placements: the Moon in the 7th brings a wife in the 32nd year (Sutras 41-46), Mars in the 6th a marriage in the 27th (Sutras 46-53), and the Sun in the 7th a late marriage (Sutras 69-74). On the Mars verse, the modern commentary printed with the Sutras says it cannot see the basis, because the 6th house has nothing to do with marriage. None of these works as a general rule, so this app does not compute an age of marriage from any of them.

Dasha: marriage appears in a long list, not in one planet's period

BPHS Ch. 48 gives the Dasha of each house lord a one-line reading (Sl. 2-8), and it does not call the 7th lord's period a marriage period. Sl. 5-8 read it as a time of strain around the partner. Marriage does appear elsewhere, in the antardasha chapters (Ch. 52-60), as one item in long lists of good results. The English of those chapters names marriage in the sub-periods of seven of the nine planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn), and almost always on a condition about where that sub-lord stands, counted from the Lagna or from the Dasha lord (once, Ch. 52 Sl. 11-12½, on benefics around the Dasha lord instead). Six examples:

Sub-period lord (Dasha lord)BPHSThe verse asks the sub-lord to beHow the English words it
Moon (Sun)Ch. 52 Sl. 4-6In a Kendra or Trikona; for the second wording, exalted or in own sign"Functions, like marriage etc."; "marriage of the native"
Jupiter (Sun)Ch. 52 Sl. 32-33½In a Kendra or Trikona from the Lagna, exalted, in own sign or own varga"Marriage of the native"
Venus (Sun)Ch. 52 Sl. 65-68In a Kendra or Trikona, exalted, in own sign, own varga or a friendly sign"Marriage and happiness, as desired from wife"
Venus (Saturn)Ch. 57 Sl. 24-27½In a Kendra, a Trikona or the 11th, joined or aspected by benefics"Effects, like marriage, birth of a son"
Mars (Jupiter)Ch. 56 Sl. 65-66Exalted, in own sign, or in an exalted or own Navamsa"Celebration of functions, such as marriage etc."
Mercury (Ketu)Ch. 59 Sl. 69-71In a Kendra or Trikona, exalted or in own sign"Functions, like marriage suddenly"
Six of the verses that name marriage. Each lists it among other results such as wealth, land, royal favour and children.

The condition is the sub-lord's placement, not whether it is Venus or the 7th lord. Lines reading "marriage etc. at home" need not mean the reader's own. Because so many planets qualify, the lists cannot narrow a decade to a year. Venus's own Mahadasha is no exception: Ch. 47 Sl. 79-82 mentions a "celebration of marriage in the family" only with Venus in its Moolatrikona.

This is also where the app's own timing differs from the verses. The card headed "When both charts support it", in the full compatibility reading (it needs a second person's chart), lists dated "windows of support": Vimshottari periods whose lord rules, sits in or aspects the 2nd, 7th or 11th house, with Venus and Jupiter both counted as marriage significators because the app does not ask for gender. The card's method note calls this classical; no verse in BPHS, Saravali or the Bhrigu Sutras states the 2nd, 7th and 11th test, so this page calls it a modern convention. The card's own note says its windows are not dates on which a marriage happens.

Transits

The transit method is later and shorter. Dr S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (pp. 310-311), a modern book among this site's sources, advises emphasising Jupiter's transit for marriage, children and similar auspicious events, and rates Jupiter good from the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th signs from the natal Moon. Quoting the Jyotish-Tattvam, it adds that Venus bestows conjugal happiness as it passes through the 7th from its own natal position. BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 34-36 gives an Ashtakavarga version: marriage and gains whenever Venus transits signs with more auspicious points in Venus's own Ashtakavarga. This app's Gochar calculator labels Jupiter, Mercury and Venus favourable in the same signs from the Moon and in the 10th. The timing card's method note describes Jupiter's passage through the 7th sign and the 7th from the Moon, but the card shows only dasha periods. Each of these says a period is better supported. None gives a date.

How to check this in your own chart

  1. Open the birth chart calculator and note your Lagna. The 7th house is the sign opposite it. If you do not know your Lagna, the Lagna calculator finds it, and it needs a birth time.
  2. Find the 7th lord, the planet that rules that sign (house lord). Note its sign, house and dignity, the label the calculator gives. Own sign or exaltation is the first test of Ch. 18 Sl. 1; the 6th, 8th or 12th is the next (Sl. 2).
  3. Note who shares the lord's sign or sits in the 7th sign, and whether a benefic (Sl. 4-5) or a malefic (Sl. 16) is among them. An empty 7th house is not a negative reading: the chapter starts from the lord.
  4. Look at Venus the same way: sign, house, dignity and company. Sl. 18 needs a weak Venus together with two other conditions.
  5. Repeat the exercise from the Moon. The Moon sign calculator gives the sign; count the 7th from it, and the 7th from Venus.
  6. Look at the Navamsa, the chart BPHS Ch. 7 assigns to the spouse.
  7. Open the Vimshottari dasha calculator for the running Mahadasha and Antardasha with dates. Compare the sub-lord with the table above: is it one the antardasha chapters name, and does it stand where the verse asks? Then open the Gochar calculator for where Jupiter and Venus stand from your Moon now.
  8. Weigh the findings together. The verses are conditional on dignity, company and strength at once, so no single result decides.

A sample run

Take 7 October 1989, 05:50, New Delhi (enter it in the birth chart calculator to see the same positions). The Lagna is Virgo at 13.20 degrees, so the 7th is Pisces, with no planet in it. Its lord, Jupiter, is in Gemini at 16.44 degrees in the 10th house, and the calculator labels it Neutral: neither own sign nor exalted, and not in the 6th, 8th or 12th, so neither Sl. 1 nor Sl. 2 applies. Venus is in Scorpio at 4.43 degrees in the 3rd house, in a friendly sign. The Moon is in Sagittarius at 8.14 degrees, so the 7th sign from the Moon is Gemini, where Jupiter stands. No malefic joins the 7th or its lord, so Sl. 16 is not triggered; aspects are a further step this sample leaves out. Two app flags touch the reading: Mars in the 1st gives this chart the app's Mangal Dosha (Mild), and Jupiter ruling both the 4th and the 7th gives it Kendradhipathya Dosha (Mild). The dasha calculator shows the Moon Mahadasha from 30 June 2018 to 29 June 2028, with Venus's Antardasha from 30 April 2026 to 30 December 2027. The app's timing card lists that Antardasha as a window of support because Venus rules the 2nd. The verse for it, BPHS Ch. 53 Sl. 53-55, names "happiness to wife and children", not marriage, and only when Venus is in a Kendra, a Trikona or the 11th, or exalted or in its own sign; here it is in the 3rd. That is the gap between the convention and the verses, and neither is a statement that anything will happen.

The Kundli matching calculator compares two charts and scores compatibility; it does not time a marriage. The timing feature sets the running dasha beside today's transits for your own chart.

Common misreadings

  • "Marriage comes in the Dasha of the 7th lord." Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 reads that period as one of strain around the partner, and the sub-period verses above are keyed to the sub-lord's placement, not to its lordship.
  • "Venus's Dasha is the marriage Dasha." Ch. 47 Sl. 79-82 mentions a marriage in the family only when Venus is in its Moolatrikona.
  • "There is a standard age for marriage in the chart." The ages in Ch. 18 begin at five, each needs one particular combination of placements, and the commentary printed with the Bhrigu Sutras questions one of the Sutras' ages.
  • "Mangal Dosha delays marriage." The app's flag is a placement test, Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from the Lagna, graded Moderate in the 7th or 8th and Mild otherwise. It is not a timing rule, and Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not explains where the sources differ. The app's note on the flag speaks of "friction in partnership timing, not a fixed outcome"; no verse of BPHS Ch. 18 gives it as a timing rule.

What astrology cannot tell you about marriage

No chart can say whether you will meet someone, whether they will say yes, or whether two families will agree. Those depend on people, money, health, distance and chance, none of which are in the texts' tests. The 7th house describes one person's chart: a favourable 7th says nothing about a particular partner, and a good match score does not change your 7th.

Birth data limits the whole exercise. The Lagna changes sign roughly every two hours, so an uncertain birth time moves the 7th house itself (birth time unknown).

If waiting is weighing on you, why is my marriage delayed and love or arranged marriage look at related factors in the same way, and why do I feel low covers what to do when a long wait is affecting your mood.

Frequently asked questions

Can a kundli tell me the year of my marriage?
No. The classical texts give tests of quality (BPHS Ch. 18), lists of sub-periods in which marriage may appear among other results (Ch. 52-60) and a few age verses, each tied to one combination of placements (Ch. 18 Sl. 22-34). None of them dates an event.
Which planet is the marriage significator?
Venus is the fixed significator of the 7th house in BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34, BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 gives it marriage, Saravali Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13 names it too, and the introduction printed with the Bhrigu Sutras calls it Kalathra Karaka. For a woman's chart the sources differ: the English of BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 18-21 names Venus for the husband, the Bhrigu Sutras' introduction names the Sun and mentions another school that names Jupiter, and the app's timing card counts both Venus and Jupiter for every chart. BPHS also names a movable Stri Karaka (Ch. 32 Sl. 13-17), which this app's Char Karakas calculator does not assign.
Does Jupiter's transit bring marriage?
Chatterjee (Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, pp. 310-311) emphasises Jupiter's transit for marriage, rates it good from the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th from the Moon, and writes that Jupiter aspecting natal Venus, Mars, Ketu or its own natal place "signs the wedding bells". These are a modern author's rules; no verse of BPHS Ch. 18 gives them. Treat a transit as one supporting factor beside the 7th house, its lord and the running dasha.
What if I do not know my birth time?
The Moon-based steps work from the date alone, cast at local noon, and the result says if the Moon changed sign during the day. The Lagna, and so the 7th house, needs a reliable time. See birth time unknown.
Does this app predict my marriage date?
No. The full compatibility reading, which needs a second person's chart, lists windows of support from dasha periods tied to the 2nd, 7th and 11th houses or to Venus and Jupiter, not from Jupiter's transits. Its own note says they are not dates on which a marriage happens.
