Love or arranged marriage in a kundli: what the classical texts say, and what they leave out

No classical verse separates a love marriage from an arranged one. What BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and a modern book say about the 7th house, the 5th house and Venus, how to check them in your own chart, and what no chart can tell you.

In short

No verse or rule in BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II separates a love marriage from an arranged one. They read the 7th house, its lord and Venus for the quality of a marriage, and the house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras files love affairs under the 5th house; how two people come to marry is a matter of people and circumstances, which a chart does not hold.

People ask this in two ways: will I choose my partner or will my family, and does my chart show a love marriage or an arranged one? The honest answer is that none of the classical texts this site holds draws that line. They read the 7th house, its lord and Venus for the quality of a marriage, and they say nothing about how a couple meets. This page sets out what the texts do look at, what a modern house list adds, how to read the same factors in your own chart, and why a chart cannot answer the question. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.

What the classical texts say about choosing a partner

No rule separates a love marriage from an arranged one

None of BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II has a verse or rule that separates a love marriage from an arranged one; a search of them for those two phrases finds neither. What they have are statements of what a house or a planet stands for. The table sets out the nearest ones.

The texts were written for a male native and speak of "the wife"; this page reads the 7th as spouse or partner, as the house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras does ("partner in life (wife or husband)"), and BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 2 applies the same rules to women.

WhatWhereWhat it says
The 7th houseBPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 8It stands for "wife, travel, trade", among other things.
The 7th house, in the editor's listHouse list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras"Partner in life (wife or husband)", conjugal life and marital relations.
The 5th house, in the same listHouse list printed with the Bhrigu SutrasChildren, pleasure, romance and "love affairs", among much else.
The 5th houseBPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 6Amulets, sacred spells, learning, knowledge, sons, authority and fall of position. It names neither love nor a spouse.
A graha in the 5thBPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34A view the verse reports ("It is also said"): "a Grah in Putr becomes a Karak for wife". No rule for using it follows, and the same verse lists "wife" under the 2nd house too.
VenusBPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34, Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6; Saravali Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13The significator of the 7th house; it stands for marriage.
The 7th from VenusBPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24The spouse is read from it.
The NavamsaBPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8The spouse is read from this divisional chart.
The 5th house and VenusChatterjee, Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, pp. 33 and 148The 5th "rules over intelligence, romance, children and creative ability"; Venus is the Karaka for "wife, love" among other things.
Paraphrased, with short phrases quoted. The house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras is the editor's modern material and Chatterjee is a modern author; neither is a classical verse.

Read together, these are lists of what a house or a planet stands for. The modern list puts "love affairs" under the 5th house and "partner in life" under the 7th, and the English of BPHS Ch. 32 reports a view that a graha in the 5th becomes a karaka for the spouse. None says that a link between the 5th and the 7th makes a marriage a love marriage, or that the lack of one makes it arranged. A list of what a house stands for is not a rule about how two houses combine.

BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 13-17 also names a movable significator for the spouse, the Stri Karaka, last in its sequence of Char Karakas. This app's Char Karakas calculator assigns seven roles and none for the spouse.

What the verses on the 7th house do test is the quality of a marriage: the 7th lord's dignity and house, and what joins it (BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 1-2, 4-5 and 16, set out on the when will I get married page). Those tests are the same whoever chose the partner.

Dasha and transit

The sub-period chapters (BPHS Ch. 52-60) name marriage in 18 slokas, each on a condition, almost always about where the sub-lord stands, and none mentions choice or family. Chatterjee (pp. 310-311) emphasises Jupiter's transit for marriage. The card headed "When both charts support it", in the full compatibility reading (it needs a second person's chart), counts a Vimshottari period as a window of support when its lord rules, sits in or aspects the 2nd, 7th or 11th house, or is Venus or Jupiter - both are counted for every chart, because the app does not ask for gender. That test is a modern convention: none of this site's classical sources (BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras) states it, and the app uses it as a way of looking, not as a verse. It does not ask how a couple met, so the timing tools cannot tell the two kinds of marriage apart either.

Matching is not in the texts either

In many families a chart comparison is one step of an arranged match, and Chatterjee notes in passing (p. 20) that astrological advice is sought very commonly for marriage proposals. That comparison is Ashtakoot, or Guna Milan, and its rules are not in BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Chatterjee: a search of all four for the koota names finds no matching system, as the nakshatra matching page records. This app's Kundli matching calculator scores two people's Moon nakshatras with eight kootas out of 36 and adds Mulank and Bhagyank harmony from both birth dates. It does not ask how the two people met.

The Mangal Dosha calculator flag is a placement test on one chart (Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from the Lagna), and its note says many traditions consider it neutralised if both partners share it, which is a statement about two charts. Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not explains where the sources differ. The flag says nothing about whether a marriage is chosen or arranged.

How to check this in your own chart

  1. Open the birth chart calculator and note your Lagna, then the 7th house, its lord (house lord) and Venus: sign, house, dignity and company. The Lagna changes sign about every two hours, so an uncertain birth time can change the 7th house itself (birth time unknown).
  2. Look at the 5th house: its sign, any graha in it, its lord and where the lord stands. By the view the English of BPHS Ch. 32 reports, a graha there becomes a karaka for the spouse; the sentence says nothing of an empty 5th.
  3. Open the Navamsa calculator and note the Navamsa Lagna and the Navamsa 7th house (BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8).
  4. Repeat the 7th-house reading from the Moon (the Moon sign calculator gives the sign), since Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 46 says the results can be deduced from the Ascendant and the Moon, the stronger having more significance.
  5. Open the yogas calculator for the yogas the app detects. They are general combinations; none of the 57 it can name is a love-marriage or arranged-marriage yoga.
  6. If a match is being considered, the Kundli matching calculator scores two charts. It describes the pair, not how they met.
  7. The Vimshottari dasha calculator gives the running Mahadasha and Antardasha. Dasha and transit do not separate the two kinds of marriage either; the sibling page tables the sub-periods in which marriage appears.
  8. Set the findings beside your own life: how marriages are made in your family and community, what you want, and whom you know. The chart describes factors; it does not choose.

A sample run

Take 15 September 1988, 21:47, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026 (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator). The Lagna is Taurus at 6.34 degrees. The 5th house is Virgo, and Mercury, its lord, sits in it at 25.88 degrees in its own sign; as the only graha there, it would become a karaka for the spouse by the view Ch. 32 reports. The 7th is Scorpio, empty, and its lord Mars is in Pisces at 15.09 degrees in the 11th house, a friendly sign, retrograde. Venus is in Cancer at 15.11 degrees in the 3rd house, labelled neutral. The Moon is in Libra at 18.56 degrees; the 7th from it, Aries, and the 7th from Venus, Capricorn, are empty. The Navamsa calculator puts the Navamsa Lagna in Aquarius, so the Navamsa 7th is Leo, which holds Mercury. The app flags no dosha. The yogas calculator lists Raj Yoga (Kendra-Kona), formed by Mars, the 7th lord, and Mercury, the 5th lord, in mutual aspect: a general link between an angle lord and a trine lord, which says nothing about how a marriage comes about. It also lists Parivarthana Yoga, an exchange of signs between the Moon and Venus, not between the 5th and 7th lords, and five more, two of them involving Venus (Amala and Ubhayachari); none is a marriage rule. The dasha calculator shows Mercury's Mahadasha from 24 August 2025 to 24 August 2042 and Mercury's Antardasha in it from 24 August 2025 to 20 January 2028; none of the 18 slokas that name marriage in BPHS Ch. 52-60 is for Mercury as the sub-lord in Mercury's Dasha. The timing card would list both running Mercury periods as windows of support, because Mercury rules the 2nd; neither the card nor the verses say how a couple meets. On the factors this page looks at, this chart fits a marriage that was chosen and one that was arranged equally well, and so would any other.

Common misreadings

  • "If the 5th and 7th lords are linked, it is a love marriage." No source here says it. In the sample the app does link them, as a Raj Yoga between an angle lord and a trine lord, which is about neither love nor arrangement.
  • "Venus or the 5th house shows romance, so the marriage will be a love marriage." The Bhrigu house list files love affairs under the 5th, and the English of BPHS reports a view that a graha in the 5th becomes a karaka for the spouse. Both say what the house stands for, not what kind of marriage results.
  • "A high matching score means the match is right, and a low one means it is wrong." The score compares two Moon nakshatras by rules that are not in the classical texts. It does not measure the people, their families or their wishes.
  • "A kundli can say whether my family will agree." Nothing in the texts or in the app looks at anyone's family.

What astrology cannot tell you about love and arranged marriage

A chart cannot say how you will meet someone, who will propose, whether two families will agree, or whether a match that suits on paper will suit in life. Those depend on people, community, money, distance and chance. Two people with the same chart can marry in different ways, and one chart fits both stories. A chart describes one person; the other person, and the families, are not in it.

Birth data limits the reading too. The Navamsa is a ninth of a sign, so its Lagna changes many times more often than the Lagna sign does, about every 13 minutes on average, and a few minutes' error in the birth time can move it. The calculators that read the Lagna, the houses and the Navamsa ask for a birth time and place.

If what you want and what your family wants point in different directions, a chart will not settle it. Talk to people you trust and take your time. If anyone at home is hurting or threatening you, call 112. Why is my marriage delayed looks at the wait itself in the same way.

Frequently asked questions

Can a kundli show whether I will have a love marriage or an arranged one?
No. The classical texts this site holds have no verse or rule that separates the two. They read the 7th house, its lord and Venus for the quality of a marriage, and a chart cannot say how two people come to marry.
Which house shows a love marriage?
The texts name none. The house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras, the editor's modern material, files "love affairs" under the 5th house and "partner in life" and conjugal life under the 7th, and the English of BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 reports a view ("It is also said") that a graha in the 5th becomes a karaka for the spouse. Neither is a rule about how a marriage comes about.
Does Venus decide the kind of marriage?
No. Venus is the significator of the 7th house in BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34 and of marriage in Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 and Saravali Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13, and Chatterjee (p. 148) calls it the Karaka for "wife, love" among other things. None says a strong or weak Venus makes a marriage love or arranged.
Does Kundli matching apply to a love marriage?
The calculator scores any two people's charts the same way and does not ask how they met. Its rules are not in the classical texts. Whether a family asks for a match is a custom, not a rule of the texts.
What if I do not know my birth time?
The Moon-based steps work from the date alone, cast at local noon, and the result says if the Moon changed sign during the day. The Lagna, the 7th house and the Navamsa need a reliable time and place.
Does this app predict what kind of marriage I will have?
No. It computes the factors above and labels no marriage as love or arranged.
My parents and I want different things. What does the chart say?
It does not say. A chart describes one person, and no text here looks at families. Talk to people you trust; if anyone at home is hurting or threatening you, call 112.
