"When will I get a job?" is asked by a first-time job seeker, by someone between jobs, and by someone who wants a change. A kundli does not hold a date for an offer. The classical texts read the 10th house, its lord and the 10th from the Moon for livelihood and standing, name significators, and list sub-periods in which an employer or a position appears among many results. This page sets out those readings, shows how to check the same factors in your own chart, and says where they stop. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.
What the classical texts say about a job and its timing
The house, the lord and the significators
BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 gives the 10th house "royalty (authority), place, profession (livelihood), honour", with the father and foreign residence beside them. Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 2 counts the 10th from the stronger of the Ascendant and the Moon, calls it Karmasthana, and says that if its lord has strength the effects in regard to Karma prosper and otherwise decline. Sl. 3-6 add that the occupant of the 10th, counted from the Moon or the Ascendant, influences the livelihood according to its nature. BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 reads "power (and position)" from the Dashamsa (D10).
The fixed significator, or karaka, of the 10th is Mercury (BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34). Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 gives Mercury "business dealings, livelihood" and Saturn "source of maintenance", and Saravali Ch. 7 Sl. 7-13 gives the Sun "kings", Mercury "expertise, ministership" and Jupiter "position". The 6th house is different: BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 7 gives it maternal uncle, enemies, ulcers and a step-mother, with no service. "Service, employees, subordinates" for the 6th comes from the modern house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras, which also gives the 10th "permanency (in service), promotion, advancement, appointment, profession".
| What the texts look at | Where |
|---|---|
| The 10th house: authority, place, livelihood, honour | BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 |
| The 10th counted from the stronger of the Lagna and the Moon, and the strength of its lord | Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 2 |
| The occupant of the 10th, counted from the Moon or the Lagna | Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 3-6 |
| Mercury, the significator of the 10th; Saturn, "source of maintenance" | BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 31-34, Ch. 70 Sl. 1-6 |
| The Dashamsa (D10), "power (and position)" | BPHS Ch. 7 Sl. 1-8 |
| The 6th house, "service, employees"; the 10th, "permanency (in service), promotion" | House list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras (modern) |
Dasha: an employer appears in a long list, not in one planet's period
BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 reads "recognition from and awards by the Government" in the Dasha of the lord of the 10th, and Sl. 1 says that Dasha is favourable if the lord stands in an auspicious house, in exaltation and the like, and adverse if it is debilitated in an inauspicious house. The verse names recognition by the Government, not employment, and nothing in it calls that Dasha a job period. Employment appears in the sub-period chapters (Ch. 52-60) as one item among many, on a condition about the sub-lord. Three examples:
| Sub-period lord (Dasha lord) | BPHS | The sloka asks the sub-lord to be | What it lists, among much else |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jupiter (Venus) | Ch. 60 Sl. 45-48 | Exalted, in own sign, or in a Kendra or Trikona from the Lagna or from the Dasha lord | Recognition from the king, gain of wealth, good reputation, "association with an employer and with men of learning" |
| Jupiter (Sun) | Ch. 52 Sl. 34-36 | The lord of the 9th or the 10th | "Gain of position etc", conveyances and a kingdom |
| Saturn (Mercury) | Ch. 58 Sl. 67-68½ | Exalted, in own sign, or in a Kendra, Trikona or the 11th | "Gain of a position", well-being in the family, increase in cattle wealth |
The counterparts name losses: Ch. 60 Sl. 49-50 "loss of position" for Jupiter 6th, 8th or 12th from the Dasha lord and joined by a malefic, and Ch. 56 Sl. 12-14 "loss of cattle and employment" for Saturn in Jupiter's Dasha when it stands in the 6th, 8th or 12th, is combust or is in an enemy's sign. Rank or office ("position") appears in 29 of the 288 sub-period slokas, 11 times as a gain and 18 as a loss, each on its own condition. The remedies printed beside some slokas are not reproduced: the text prescribes propitiation, and this app does not.
Modern authors, and transit
Dr S. S. Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, a modern book among this site's sources, lists rules for good and bad periods on pp. 121-123, several credited to articles in The Times of Astrology; item 15 (p. 122) says the sub-period of a planet in the 6th house "will bring changes in professional condition good or bad", depending on its association, aspect and placement. On p. 311 he rates Saturn's transit good from the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon and the 10th a period of gain. This app's Gochar table, which its code takes from S. Kannan, labels Saturn favourable in the 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon, testing in the 1st, 4th, 8th and 12th, and neutral elsewhere, the 10th included. No verse gives a rule for when a first or a new job comes; the nearest are the lists above.
How to check this in your own chart
- Open the birth chart calculator and note your Lagna, the 10th house and any graha in it, then the 10th lord (house lord): sign, house and dignity. The Lagna changes sign about every two hours, so an uncertain birth time can move the 10th house (birth time unknown).
- Count the 10th from the Moon (the Moon sign calculator gives the sign) and note its occupants. Saravali asks for the stronger of the Lagna and the Moon; the app does not rank them, so read both.
- Open the Dashamsa calculator for the D10 Lagna and its 10th house.
- Note Mercury, Saturn, the Sun and Jupiter (sign, house, dignity), and the 6th house and its lord, which modern lists tie to service.
- Open the Vimshottari dasha calculator for the running Mahadasha and Antardasha with dates. Is the Mahadasha the 10th lord's? Does the sub-lord stand where its sloka asks?
- The Career and Money calculator ranks the grahas that own your career axis (the 10th lord, any graha in the 10th, the lord of the D10 Lagna, the Amatya Karaka and the strongest graha), gives a Job versus business read, and lists dated income windows: Mahadasha or Antardasha periods whose lord rules, occupies or aspects the 2nd, 10th or 11th and scores supportive or strong. Its own note calls them timing for effort. That test is a modern convention: none of this site's classical sources (BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras) states it, and the app uses it as a way of looking, not as a verse. The Amatya Karaka is the graha second in degrees within its sign (BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 13-17); the app labels it "Career & counsel", while the verses compare the Karakas with a king and his ministers and do not tie it to a profession.
- The Gochar calculator shows Saturn's house from your Moon with the app's label.
- Weigh the findings together, then set them beside what no chart holds: your qualifications, the openings, and the hiring calendar.
A sample run
Take 22 April 2002, 04:21, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026 (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator; the dasha, Gochar and Career and Money calculators use the day you open them). The Lagna is Pisces at 5.82 degrees, so the 10th is Sagittarius, with no planet in it. Its lord, Jupiter, which also rules the Lagna, stands in Gemini at 15.70 degrees in the 4th house, labelled neutral. Counted from the Moon, in Cancer, the 10th is Aries, which holds the Sun and Mercury. The D10 Lagna is Sagittarius, so Jupiter rules it too, and the D10 10th, Virgo, holds Rahu. The Amatya Karaka is Mercury. The Venus Mahadasha runs from 3 April 2014 to 3 April 2034, with Jupiter's Antardasha from 2 June 2024 to 1 February 2027. Ch. 60 Sl. 45-48, the sloka for Jupiter in Venus's Dasha, lists an employer among its results if Jupiter is in a Kendra or Trikona from the Lagna or the Dasha lord; Jupiter is in the 4th, a Kendra, so that condition is met, while the counterpart Sl. 49-50 needs Jupiter 6th, 8th or 12th from Venus, and it is the 2nd. The sloka lists an employer among many results and says nothing of a job or its date. Saturn, then in Pisces, was in the 9th from the Moon, which the Gochar calculator labels neutral; Sade Sati, Ardha Ashtama Sani and Ashtama Sani were not running. That day the calculator labelled seven of the other eight transits testing, which this page does not weigh. The app flags no dosha. The Career and Money calculator names Jupiter first on the career axis (10th lord and D10 Lagna lord), Mercury second and the Sun third, as the strongest graha by Shad Bala. Its Job versus business read is "Business-leaning", on one factor, the Sun's Shad Bala exceeding Saturn's: a statement about suitability, not about whether work comes. Its first income window is Mercury's Antardasha in Venus's Dasha, April 2030 to February 2033. Neither the sloka nor the calculator says a job is held back outside a window.
Common misreadings
- "My 10th lord's Dasha is when I will get a job." Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 reads recognition from the Government in that Dasha, not employment, and Sl. 1 makes it depend on the lord's placement.
- "A weak 10th lord means no job." Saravali Ch. 33 Sl. 2 says the effects in regard to Karma decline when the lord lacks strength. It speaks of a trend in standing, not of whether a job exists, and BPHS pairs gains with losses by placement.
- "Saturn blocks jobs." No verse makes Saturn a block on work in general. BPHS Ch. 70 gives Saturn the "source of maintenance", and the sub-period lists give it favourable slokas (Ch. 58 Sl. 67-68½) beside adverse ones (Ch. 56 Sl. 12-14), each on a placement. Chatterjee rates its transit good from the 3rd, 6th and 11th from the Moon; his reading of Sade Sati is below.
- "The app tells me when I will be hired." Its income windows are dasha periods in which the lord holds the income axis and scores well; they are timing for effort, not dates.
What astrology cannot tell you about a job
No chart knows the openings in your field, your qualifications, your results, an interviewer's decision, the hiring calendar, your city or your family's needs. A favourable 10th house makes none of those easier, and an unfavourable one makes none harder. The Job versus business read describes suitability, not whether or when work arrives.
Sade Sati, Ardha Ashtama Sani and Ashtama Sani are later traditions: BPHS, Saravali and the Bhrigu Sutras do not mention them. This app takes Sade Sati from S. Kannan's Fundamentals of Hindu Astrology and the other two from Chatterjee's Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II (pp. 311-313). Chatterjee (p. 311) writes that Sade Sati's difficulties differ with the stage of life at which it falls, and that at the beginning of a career it "will spoil the career or profession", may delay or deny promotion, and brings financial loss, quarrels with superiors and perhaps an unwanted transfer: one modern author's reading of a transit, which he does not apply where Saturn is a yogakaraka for the chart, well placed, with benefic association or aspect. The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events. The Sade Sati calculator shows whether it is running for your Moon.
If waiting for work is wearing on you, speak to someone you trust: a friend, a mentor or a careers adviser. If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India). When will I get promoted and career change timing look at related factors in the same way, and the Career and Money feature page sets out the app's career reading.
Frequently asked questions
- Can a kundli tell me when I will get a job?
- No. The classical texts read the 10th house and its lord for livelihood and standing and list sub-periods in which an employer or position appears among many results, each on a condition about the sub-lord. None dates an offer.
- Which house shows a job?
- BPHS Ch. 11 Sl. 11 gives the 10th house profession and livelihood. BPHS does not give the 6th house service; the modern house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras does. Read both, from the Lagna and from the Moon. See the 6th house page.
- Is the Mahadasha of the 10th lord the time for a job?
- Not in the text. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 reads recognition from the Government in that Dasha, and Sl. 1 makes the result depend on where the lord stands.
- What does an income window in the Career and Money calculator mean?
- A Mahadasha or Antardasha whose lord rules, occupies or aspects the 2nd, 10th or 11th house and scores supportive or strong in this app's index. The calculator's note calls it timing for effort, when to push, negotiate or switch, not a date for a job.
- What if I do not know my birth time?
- The Moon-based steps work from the date alone. The Lagna, the 10th house, the Dashamsa and the Career and Money calculator need a reliable time and place.
- Does this app predict my job?
- No. It computes the factors above and dated windows from your own dasha timeline. Its notes call the income windows timing for effort and say that no amount or guarantee of income is implied.

What it needs
Date, time and place
That is more than this article asks for - it only ever takes a date, and sometimes a time, and never a name or a birth place. So this one runs on its own page, which asks for exactly what it needs and stores none of it.
