If you are asking why your marriage has not happened yet, the first honest answer is that the classical texts hold no rule that explains a delay. They read the 7th house, its lord and Venus for the quality of a marriage, they give a handful of lines in which a marriage is late or falls at a stated age, and they list sub-periods in which marriage appears among many other results. This page sets them out and shows how to check them in your own chart. It is one of the life questions this site answers in the same way.
What the classical texts say about a late marriage
No verse in BPHS Ch. 18 explains a delay
BPHS reads marriage through the 7th house, in Ch. 18 (Sl. 1-42), which tests the quality of a marriage. A 7th lord in its own sign or exalted gives full happiness through marriage (Sl. 1). A 7th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th is read as a strain on the spouse's well-being, unless it is in its own sign or exalted (Sl. 2). A malefic joined to the house or its lord brings "evils" to the spouse, more so if they lack strength (Sl. 16). None of these is about when a marriage happens, and the word "delay" does not occur in the chapter. Saravali's verses on the 7th house (Ch. 34 Sl. 45-57) read the kind of spouse, the number of marriages and the spouse's condition; only Sl. 56 speaks of timing.
The texts were written for a male native and speak of "the wife"; this page reads the 7th as spouse or partner, as the house list printed with the Bhrigu Sutras does ("partner in life (wife or husband)"), and BPHS Ch. 80 Sl. 2 applies the same rules to women.
The Bhrigu Sutras call a marriage "late" once, for the Sun in the 7th. Other placements carry a stated year instead (the Moon in the 7th and Venus in the 2nd the 32nd, Mars in the 6th the 27th), and Mercury in the 1st brings an early marriage. "Delayed" appears only in the editor's comments.
| Source | The placement it needs | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Bhrigu Sutras 69-74 | The Sun in the 7th house | The marriage "will take place late" (the translator adds: long after the marriageable age). The same sutras add remarks on conduct, which this page leaves out. |
| Bhrigu Sutras 41-46 | The Moon in the 7th house | "A wife" in the 32nd year. The editor adds that the marriage is delayed "only if there is some malefic influence" on the Moon. |
| Bhrigu Sutras 14-19 | Venus in the 2nd house | "A beautiful wife" in the 32nd year. |
| Bhrigu Sutras 46-53 | Mars in the 6th house | Marriage in the 27th year. The editor cannot see the basis, since the 6th house "has nothing to do with marriage". |
| Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 56 | Mercury and Venus together in the 7th, with a benefic aspecting them | Marriage late in life: "obtainment of a wife at an advanced age". |
| BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 30-34 | Five different combinations of placements | Marriage in the 22nd or 27th year, the 23rd or 26th, the 25th or 33rd, the 31st or 33rd, or the 27th or 30th. |
| Chatterjee, Advanced Predictive Astrology Vol. II, p. 76 | In a woman's chart, malefic influence over the 2nd, 4th, 7th and 12th houses and over Mars | A "late and unhappy marriage"; benefic influence on the same places is read as bringing a good husband. |
Three things stand out. Each line needs a particular placement or combination, and a chart can match none of them. None says why a planet would hold a marriage back; for the Sun and the Moon only the editor offers a reason, in his own comments. And none names an age that counts as late: the stated ages run from 5 to 33, and "late" is measured against "the marriageable age", which the texts do not define. Each source goes on to other results around these lines. The book's list goes on to graver events and to named people's lives; this page leaves those out, as this app does not forecast such events.
Dasha and transit
The sub-period chapters (BPHS Ch. 52-60) name marriage in 18 slokas, for seven sub-lords and never for Rahu or Ketu, and each sets a condition on placement. A sub-period with no such sloka is silent, not delayed. The when will I get married page sets the lists out. BPHS Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 reads the Dasha of the 7th lord as a time of strain around the partner, not as a marriage period. For transits, Chatterjee (pp. 310-311) rates Jupiter good from the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th from the Moon, and BPHS Ch. 70 Sl. 34-36 links marriage to Venus passing through signs with more auspicious points in its own Ashtakavarga. Neither says a marriage is held back otherwise.
How to check this in your own chart
- Open the birth chart calculator and note your Lagna. The 7th house is the sign opposite it. The Lagna changes sign about every two hours, so an uncertain birth time can change the 7th house itself (birth time unknown).
- Find the 7th lord (house lord) and note its sign, house and dignity. Own sign or exaltation is the first test of Sl. 1, the 6th, 8th or 12th the second (Sl. 2), a malefic in its sign the third (Sl. 16). They concern the quality of a marriage, not its date.
- Look at Venus the same way, then at the Moon (the Moon sign calculator gives the sign). Saravali Ch. 34 Sl. 46 says the 7th-house results can be deduced from the Ascendant and the Moon, the stronger having more significance, so count the 7th from the Moon, and from Venus (BPHS Ch. 32 Sl. 22-24).
- Compare your chart with the table: the Sun or the Moon in your 7th, Venus in your 2nd, Mars in your 6th, Mercury and Venus together in the 7th or, for a woman's chart, Chatterjee's malefic influence. The BPHS age combinations need further steps that this app does not compute. If none applies, the texts have no line for your chart: a result, not a gap to fill.
- The Mangal Dosha calculator shows the app's flag: Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th from the Lagna, Moderate in the 7th or 8th and Mild otherwise. It is a placement test, not a timing rule, and it is not the Sutras' Mars in the 6th (Mangal Dosha: what it is and is not). The app's note on the flag speaks of "friction in partnership timing, not a fixed outcome".
- The Vimshottari dasha calculator gives the running Mahadasha and Antardasha with dates. Is the sub-lord one of the seven the 18 slokas name, and does it stand where the sloka asks?
- The Gochar calculator shows where Jupiter and Venus stand from your Moon, in this app's table, which its code takes from S. Kannan. It labels them favourable in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th from the Moon and every planet in the 11th, and flags one listed planet-and-house pairing per planet as "intensified" (Jupiter in the 3rd and Venus in the 6th are two).
- The card headed "When both charts support it", in the full compatibility reading (it needs a second person's chart), counts a Vimshottari period as a window of support when its lord rules, sits in or aspects the 2nd, 7th or 11th house, or is Venus or Jupiter - both are counted for every chart, because the app does not ask for gender. That test is a modern convention: none of this site's classical sources (BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras) states it, and the app uses it as a way of looking, not as a verse. The card's own note says its windows are not dates on which a marriage happens.
- Weigh the findings together. Each verse is conditional on placement, so no single result decides.
A sample run
Take 21 March 1991, 08:33, New Delhi, checked on 22 October 2026 (enter the date, time and place in the birth chart calculator; the Gochar calculator uses the day you open it). The Lagna is Aries at 18.52 degrees, so the 7th is Libra, with no planet in it. Its lord, Venus, which is also the significator, stands alone in Aries at 8.96 degrees in the 1st house, which the calculator labels friendly. That is neither own sign nor exaltation and not the 6th, 8th or 12th, so Sl. 1 and Sl. 2 do not apply, and no malefic joins the house or its lord, so Sl. 16 is not met. The Moon is in Taurus at 8.29 degrees in the 2nd house; the 7th from it, Scorpio, and the 7th from Venus, Libra, are both empty. The Sun and Mercury are in the 12th and Mars in the 2nd, so none of the table's classical placements is present, and no age verse of BPHS Ch. 18 fits. Read for a woman's chart, Chatterjee's modern sentence would apply in part: malefics occupy the 2nd (Mars), the 4th (Ketu) and the 12th (the Sun), and Saturn aspects the 7th; it names no age. The app flags Mangal Dosha (Mild, Mars in the 2nd) and Kendradhipathya Dosha (Mild, Venus owning the 7th but not the 1st); this page weighs neither as a timing rule. The dasha calculator shows Rahu's Mahadasha from 27 December 2008 to 27 December 2026 and Mars's Antardasha in it from 8 December 2025 to the same day; none of the 18 slokas that name marriage is for Mars as the sub-lord in Rahu's Dasha. Jupiter's Mahadasha follows on 27 December 2026. The Gochar calculator that day showed Jupiter, then in Cancer, in the 3rd from the Moon and Venus, then retrograde in Libra, in the 6th: both neutral and both flagged "intensified", which this page does not weigh. The card would show this chart's next window of support as Jupiter's Mahadasha, December 2026 to December 2042, because Jupiter is exalted and counts as a significator; it leaves out the running Mars sub-period, though Mars sits in the 2nd, because it also weighs the lord's strength. On the classical lines this page looks at, nothing in this chart points to a late marriage, and nothing in the texts or the app dates one.
Common misreadings
- "My 7th lord is in the 6th, 8th or 12th, so my marriage will be late." Sl. 2 reads that placement as a strain on the spouse's well-being, unless the lord is in its own sign or exalted. It is not a statement about time.
- "Saturn or a malefic aspect delays marriage." No classical line in the table names Saturn, and the Bhrigu verses for Saturn in the 7th (Sutras 32-36) give no time for a marriage. Chatterjee's modern sentence counts any malefic influence, and only for a woman's chart.
- "Mangal Dosha delays marriage." The app's flag is a placement test with a note about "friction in partnership timing"; no line in the table is about it.
- "There is an age after which a marriage cannot happen." None of the lines above sets one.
What astrology cannot tell you about a delayed marriage
No chart can say why a marriage has not happened. The reasons are ordinary and many: meeting someone you would marry, their agreement, two families agreeing, money, health, studies, work, distance and chance. None is among the texts' tests, and the 7th house describes one chart, not the other person's or your family's.
If the wait is weighing on you, the useful next step is a person, not a chart. When will I get married and love or arranged marriage look at related factors in the same way.
What to take care of
The nearest the texts come to a warning here concerns the marriage once it exists, not its timing. BPHS Ch. 18 Sl. 2 reads a 7th lord in the 6th, 8th or 12th as a strain on the spouse's well-being, Sl. 16 reads a malefic with the 7th house or its lord as bringing evils to the spouse, Ch. 48 Sl. 5-8 reads the Dasha of the 7th lord as distress around the partner, and Chatterjee (p. 76) writes of a "late and unhappy marriage" under malefic influence in a woman's chart. The areas named are relationships, family and the partner's well-being. Read them as reasons to be careful in choosing and preparing, not as a forecast.
- Take the usual time to know a prospective partner and their family, and ask the practical questions: work, money, where you would live, children. A date or a deadline from an astrologer is not a reason to shorten that.
- Do not accept or refuse a proposal on one factor of a chart. Meet the person more than once, in different settings, and involve people whose judgement you trust.
- Keep routine health check-ups up to date, and see a doctor for any symptom; this is not a diagnosis.
- If pressure from family or friends about the timing is wearing on you, say so plainly to someone close and ask for time. If anyone at home is hurting or threatening you, call 112.
- If you feel low for more than two weeks, talk to someone you trust or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India).
Frequently asked questions
- Can a kundli tell me why my marriage is delayed?
- No. The classical texts give tests of the quality of a marriage (BPHS Ch. 18), lists of sub-periods in which marriage appears among other results (Ch. 52-60) and a few lines that tie lateness or a stated year to particular placements. None explains a delay.
- Does Saturn delay marriage?
- No classical verse here says so: no line of BPHS, Saravali or the Bhrigu Sutras in the table names Saturn, and the Sutras for Saturn in the 7th (32-36) give no time for a marriage. Chatterjee (p. 76), a modern author, ties a late marriage in a woman's chart to malefic influence in general, not to Saturn alone.
- Is a marriage after 30 late?
- The texts name no age that counts as late. Bhrigu's "late" is measured against "the marriageable age", and the BPHS ages (5 to 33) each need one combination of placements. Whether 30 is late is a question about your family and community, not a chart.
- Does this app tell me when the delay will end?
- No. The full compatibility reading, which needs a second person's chart, lists windows of support from dasha periods tied to the 2nd, 7th and 11th houses or to Venus and Jupiter, and its own note says they are not dates on which a marriage happens.
- I am feeling low about the wait. Should I check my chart first?
- No. Talk to someone you trust, or call Tele-MANAS 14416 (free, 24x7, India), first. The chart can wait; it cannot assess how you are.
