In short
A Cancer Moon and an Aquarius Moon score 5.5 to 19.5 out of 36 in this app, median 16.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings with Cancer entered first; Aquarius first adds 1. Aquarius is the 8th sign from Cancer, so Bhakoot is 0, and Saturn counts the Moon an enemy, so Graha Maitri is 1; the sign kootas give only 2 of 15.
Of all the pairs Cancer forms, this one starts with the fewest sign points in this app's Ashtakoot engine: 2 of a possible 15 when Cancer is entered first. That figure has three separate causes, and it is more useful to see each of them than to read the total as a judgement. None of them describes two people; all of them describe rules.
The signs have their own pages: Cancer, Karka rashi and Aquarius, Kumbha rashi. The nakshatra matching hub explains the eight kootas, and the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Kark and Kumbh in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 gives the two signs one shared image - water. Kark is a watery sign (Sl. 10-11), and Kumbh, though airy, is pictured as "a man holding a pot" and said to resort to deep water (Sl. 21-21.5). Beyond that they diverge. Kark is Sattvic, many-footed, strong at night, ruled by Candr; Kumbh is Tamasic, biped, very strong by day, rising with its head, ruled by Sani. Sl. 5-5.5 makes Kark movable and phlegmatic, Kumbh fixed and "mixed". The chapter also gives each a Varna, and those two classes sit at opposite ends of the engine's list, which matters for the Varna koota below.
A Cancer Moon is in Punarvasu (one quarter), Pushya or Ashlesha. An Aquarius Moon is in Dhanishta (two quarters), Shatabhisha (four) or Purva Bhadrapada (three).
The kootas the two signs fix: 2 of 15
| Koota | Out of | Cancer first | Aquarius first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 0 | 1 | Classes at opposite ends of the list; the engine compares A with B |
| Vashya | 2 | 1 | 1 | Adjacent Vashya groups |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 1 | 1 | Saturn lists the Moon as an enemy; the Moon is neutral to Saturn |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 0 | 0 | Aquarius is 8th from Cancer; Cancer 6th from Aquarius |
| Sign total | 15 | 2 | 3 |
Cause one: the 8/6 distance
Bhakoot (the koota) counts from one Moon sign to the other, inclusive. Aquarius is the 8th from Cancer; Cancer is the 6th from Aquarius. 6/8 has been a zero distance in this engine throughout, and the two web references the header cites ([A], [B]) agree on it; no book in this app's library contains the rule. All 7 points go. The result is what people usually call Bhakoot dosha.
Cause two: Saturn and the Moon
Graha Maitri (the koota) reads the two lords. In the BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 relationships stored in the engine, Saturn counts the Moon an enemy, while the Moon, which has no enemies in those lists, regards Saturn as neutral. The engine scores neutral-enemy at 1, a value it kept because its references disagree (one gives 0.5, another 1). BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54 makes Kumbh Saturn's moolatrikona, but Graha Maitri only asks who rules the sign.
Cause three: Varna and entry order
Varna (the koota) is the engine's one order-dependent koota. It gives 1 when the first Moon's class is at the same position in its list as the second's or later. Cancer's class is first in that list and Aquarius's last, so Cancer entered first scores 0 and Aquarius entered first scores 1. The header notes that no reference it consulted settles the asymmetry. Varna here is the name of a koota, built from the text's sign classes; it is not a way of ranking people.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
- Nadi is 8 in 66 of the 81 pairings, 0 in 15. Punarvasu is Aadi, like Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada; Pushya is Madhya, like Dhanishta. Ashlesha, the only Antya star involved, never shares a Nadi here.
- Gana is 0 in 30, 3 in 27, 6 in 24. Two of Aquarius's three stars (Dhanishta and Shatabhisha) are Rakshasa, which puts Cancer's Deva stars at a disadvantage and Ashlesha, also Rakshasa, at an advantage.
- Tara is 3 in 19 and 1.5 in 62.
- Yoni is 2 in every pairing: Cat and Sheep against Lion and Horse, with no shared animal and no enemy pair.
Ashlesha is the Cancer star that does best against Aquarius. It never loses Nadi (Antya against Aadi or Madhya), and it gets full Gana against both Rakshasa stars and 3 against Purva Bhadrapada. Pushya does worst: Deva against the two Rakshasa stars, and sharing the Madhya nadi with Dhanishta. Pushya with Dhanishta loses both Gana and Nadi at once, and that combination is what produces the bottom of the range.
Because the sign kootas contribute so little, the nakshatra kootas are almost the whole score here. Between them they can give at most 21 points, and the best Ashlesha pairings collect the full Gana and Nadi together; that is the only route to the upper end of the band. Even then Tara stays at 1.5 in those pairings, which is why the ceiling stops at 19.5 rather than reaching 21.
The range of totals
Cancer first, the 81 totals run from 5.5 to 19.5 out of 36, median 16.5. Aquarius first, 6.5 to 20.5, median 17.5. The ceiling is low because the sign kootas can add only 2 or 3; even a strong nakshatra result leaves the total under 21. Put another way, every Cancer-Aquarius total in this engine is mostly a nakshatra score with a small sign-level addition.
Within Cancer's list in the same engine, Cancer with Sagittarius, the other 6/8 pair, runs 8 to 23.5 because Jupiter befriends the Moon where Saturn does not. Cancer with Capricorn, also ruled by Saturn but at a 7/7 distance, runs 12.5 to 26.5. Set together, the three show Bhakoot and Graha Maitri each moving the band by several points. They describe the tables, not the people.
Both stars - and therefore both birth times - are needed to place a real couple. The nakshatra calculator gives them; Moon sign and nakshatra explains the relationship.
Worked example: Cancer 1 degree with Aquarius 1 degree
A Moon at 1 degree of Cancer is in the last quarter of Punarvasu; a Moon at 1 degree of Aquarius is in Dhanishta. Cancer entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 0 | 1 | Sign: Cancer entered first |
| Vashya | 1 | 2 | Sign: adjacent groups |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: count 17 favourable, 12 unfavourable |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Cat and Lion |
| Graha Maitri | 1 | 5 | Sign: Moon neutral, Saturn hostile |
| Gana | 0 | 6 | Nakshatra: Deva with Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 8/6 |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Aadi with Madhya |
| Total | 13.5 | 36 |
Nadi supplies 8 of the 13.5. The rest is small amounts from Vashya, Tara, Yoni and Graha Maitri. Gana is 0 because Punarvasu is Deva and Dhanishta Rakshasa. The example is three points below the median; an Ashlesha Moon against the same Dhanishta Moon would have had full Gana instead, which is the single biggest improvement available within these two signs.
What the classical texts say
BPHS supplies the sign classes (Ch. 4) and the planetary friendships (Ch. 3 Sl. 55) behind two of the rows above. The Ashtakoot points and the 6/8 penalty are not found in BPHS or in the other books in this app's library - Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Daivajna Vallabha, Advanced Predictive Astrology. None of these texts comments on Cancer and Aquarius Moons as a match.
What a score does not tell you
A single-digit or mid-teen total is a reading of a convention, with several disputed cells, applied to two Moon positions. It is not a statement about two people and not a reason for or against anything; this app does not advise on marriage. Mars placement is a separate check, explained in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. Nadi dosha covers the shared-Nadi case. The love compatibility calculator offers a lighter comparison. Related pairs: Cancer and Capricorn, Cancer and Pisces and Gemini and Aquarius.
- What is the Guna Milan score for a Cancer Moon and an Aquarius Moon?
- 5.5 to 19.5 out of 36 in this app with Cancer entered first (median 16.5); 6.5 to 20.5 with Aquarius first.
- Why do the sign kootas give only 2 points?
- Bhakoot is 0 for the 8/6 distance, Graha Maitri is 1 because Saturn counts the Moon an enemy, Varna is 0 with Cancer entered first, and Vashya gives 1 of 2.
- Which Cancer star scores best with Aquarius?
- Ashlesha. It never shares a Nadi with an Aquarius star and, being Rakshasa, gets full Gana against Dhanishta and Shatabhisha.
- Why does entering Aquarius first add a point?
- Varna compares the first Moon with the second. Aquarius first passes; Cancer first does not.
- Does a low total mean we should not marry?
- This app does not give that verdict. For the full reading of two charts use the match tool.
