In short

Two Aquarius Moons score between 23 and 34 out of 36 in this app, median 28, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings. The sign kootas are full at 15 and Gana never falls below 3; the spread comes from Nadi, which Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada share, and the best result needs Dhanishta.

For two Aquarius Moons, the sign half of Guna Milan is complete: Saturn rules both, the Vashya group is shared and the 1/1 distance passes Bhakoot. The nakshatra half spans eleven points, from 23 to 34, and every value in between can be traced to which of Aquarius's three stars each Moon occupies. One of those stars, Dhanishta, has only two padas in the sign but holds the key to the high end of the range.

For the sign see Aquarius, Kumbha rashi. The nakshatra matching guide explains every koota and links all 78 pairs; the Kundli matching calculator scores two actual charts.

Kumbh in BPHS

BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 21-21.5: Kumbh "represents a man holding a pot", is deep-brown, of medium build and biped, "very strong in daytime", "resorts to deep water", airy, rises with its head and is Tamasic; "Its Lord is Sani". Sl. 5-5.5 places it with Mithun and Tula among the mixed signs. The engine draws on Saturn as the lord and on the sign's Varna and Vashya classifications; the remainder is the text's picture of the sign.

An Aquarius Moon is in the last two padas of Dhanishta, the four of Shatabhisha, or the first three of Purva Bhadrapada. Two Aquarius Moons give 81 combinations with a sign distance of 1 each way.

The kootas this sign pair fixes: a full 15

KootaOut ofAquarius with AquariusWhy

Vashya22Same group

Bhakoot771/1 is not a failing distance
Fixed for all 81 pairings (engine-facts.mjs aquarius-and-aquarius-moon-sign-compatibility, run 2026-10-14).

All four follow from the shared sign. Graha Maitri is 5 because the engine scores a single lord in full. Bhakoot is 7 because only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 fail under the rule the engine adopted from two agreeing web references; no book in this library has a Bhakoot rule. Varna, order-dependent for mixed pairs, is 1 either way with identical values, and the scratch run gave the same totals in both orders. Varna is used only as the koota's name.

The kootas the nakshatras decide

The three stars, as the engine tabulates them:

  • Dhanishta (two padas): Madhya Nadi, Rakshasa Gana, Lion Yoni.
  • Shatabhisha (four padas): Aadi Nadi, Rakshasa Gana, Horse Yoni.
  • Purva Bhadrapada (three padas): Aadi Nadi, Manushya Gana, Lion Yoni.

Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada share the Aadi Nadi, so any combination of them loses the 8. With Dhanishta paired with itself, that makes 53 same-Nadi pairings and 28 that keep the 8. Gana never falls to 0 - the sign has no Deva star - and is 6 in 45 pairings, 3 in 36. Yoni is 4 in 41 pairings, since Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada are both the Lion, and 2 in the other 40. Tara is 3 in 69 pairings and 1.5 in 12.

Every possible total

With the sign kootas fixed, two Aquarius Moons can produce exactly four totals:

  • Same star: Tara 3, Yoni 4, Gana 6, Nadi 0 - 28 (29 pairings).
  • Shatabhisha with Purva Bhadrapada: Tara 3, Yoni 2, Gana 3, Nadi 0 - 23 (24 pairings).
  • Dhanishta with Purva Bhadrapada: Tara 1.5, Yoni 4, Gana 3, Nadi 8 - 31.5 (12 pairings).
  • Dhanishta with Shatabhisha: Tara 3, Yoni 2, Gana 6, Nadi 8 - 34 (16 pairings).

The counts reproduce the engine's figures: the 24 pairings at 23 form the floor, the next 29 sit at 28 and include the median (the 41st value), and the ceiling of 34 belongs to Dhanishta with Shatabhisha. That ceiling is only two points short of the maximum possible; the shortfall is all on Yoni, because the Lion of Dhanishta and the Horse of Shatabhisha are different animals.

Shatabhisha, with four padas, is the largest star in the sign and the one that decides the most pairings. It has the widest swing of the three: 28 against another Shatabhisha Moon, 34 against Dhanishta, and 23 against Purva Bhadrapada. Purva Bhadrapada, whose fourth pada lies in Pisces, is more limited: as the sign's only Manushya star it never reaches Gana 6 except with itself, so its best result is 31.5, with Dhanishta. Dhanishta is the only star that never falls to the floor - its weakest result is 28, against itself.

In practice, then, the question for two Aquarius Moons is less "do we share a star?" than "is either of us in Dhanishta?". If one is and the other is not, the total is in the thirties; if neither is, it is 23 or 28.

The floor deserves attention because it is not the same-star case. A shared star does lose Nadi, but it is compensated with full Gana and Yoni. Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada lose Nadi without that compensation: they are different stars that happen to sit in the same Nadi group, with different Gana and different animals. The pattern repeats for two Capricorn Moons next door, where Uttara Ashadha and Shravana play the same role with the Antya Nadi; it is a feature of how the engine's Nadi table falls across adjacent stars, and it recurs wherever two neighbouring stars in one sign share a group.

Tara explains the only half-point. The engine counts from one star to the other inclusively, both ways, and treats a remainder of 3, 5 or 7 after division by 9 as unfavourable. Dhanishta to Purva Bhadrapada counts 3, so one direction fails and Tara is 1.5. Adjacent stars - Dhanishta and Shatabhisha, or Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada - count 2 and 27, both favourable.

The range of totals

Across all 81 pairings two Aquarius Moons score 23 to 34 out of 36, median 28. A couple's place in that range is set almost entirely by whether one of them is in Dhanishta: every pairing involving one Dhanishta Moon and one other scores 31.5 or 34, while pairings without Dhanishta score 23 or 28. The nakshatra calculator gives the star from a birth time, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains how sign and star relate.

Worked example: Aquarius 1 degree with Aquarius 1 degree

Both Moons at 1 degree of Aquarius are in Dhanishta. ashtakoot() returns:

Seven kootas full and Nadi at zero: the signature of a shared star. The engine reports "Same Nadi - traditionally flagged; worth discussing openly". Some practitioners make exceptions when two people share a star or sign; neither the engine nor the books in this library contain such an exception, and none is applied here.

Move one Moon a few degrees on, into Shatabhisha, and Nadi becomes 8 while Yoni drops to 2: the total rises to 34, the ceiling. Move it further, into Purva Bhadrapada, and it falls back to 31.5. Nadi dosha discusses the zero in context.

What the classical texts say

BPHS describes Kumbh and gives the planetary relationships the engine uses. It contains no Ashtakoot rule, and neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology - a search for bhakoot, koota, kuta, nadi, gana and yoni finds none. Nothing in the corpus addresses two Aquarius Moons.

What a score does not tell you

Neither 23 nor 34 is a judgement on two people; both describe a rule set meeting two Moon positions. This app does not give verdicts on marriage. Mars placement is a separate traditional check, covered in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. For a lighter comparison outside Ashtakoot, try the love compatibility calculator.

What is the Guna Milan score for two Aquarius Moons?
From 23 to 34 out of 36, median 28, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
Why is the lowest score not a same-star pairing?
A shared star loses Nadi but gains full Gana and Yoni (28). Shatabhisha with Purva Bhadrapada loses Nadi too, both being Aadi, but without those gains (23).
Which pairing scores highest?
Dhanishta with Shatabhisha, at 34: both Rakshasa, different Nadi, Tara favourable both ways.
Does the order we are entered in matter?
No. Both Moons share a Varna value, so the one order-sensitive koota scores 1 either way and every total is identical in both orders.
Can Gana be 0 for two Aquarius Moons?
No. A Gana of 0 needs a Deva star against a Rakshasa star, and Aquarius has no Deva star in the engine's list.
How do we find our actual score?
Enter both birth details in the match tool. For this pair the stars decide between 23, 28, 31.5 and 34.
