In short

With Capricorn entered first, this app scores a Capricorn-Aquarius pair from 17 to 24.5 out of 36, median 20, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings; Aquarius first adds a point. Saturn rules both signs, so Graha Maitri is full, but as neighbours at the 2/12 distance they lose Bhakoot, and Vashya is only 0.5.

Capricorn and Aquarius are the two signs of Saturn, side by side. In Guna Milan the shared lord fills Graha Maitri, but being neighbours costs them Bhakoot, and that trade leaves the sign kootas at 5.5 out of 15. On the nakshatra side this pair has an unusual advantage: their stars almost never share a Nadi, so the 8-point koota is nearly always collected. The result is a narrow band of totals sitting around 20.

For the signs see Capricorn, Makara rashi and Aquarius, Kumbha rashi. The nakshatra matching guide explains the kootas; the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.

Makar and Kumbh: the two signs of Shani

BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 19-20 says Makar "is lorded by Sani"; Sl. 21-21.5 ends its description of Kumbh with "Its Lord is Sani". Beyond the shared lord the text separates them clearly. Makar is earthy, strong at night, rises with its back, and changes from quadruped to "footless, moving in water". Kumbh "represents a man holding a pot", is airy, "very strong in daytime", rises with its head. Both are Tamasic. In Ch. 3 Sl. 51-54, BPHS gives Kumbh as the sign where Saturn has its moolatrikona, a point of dignity the engine does not use for matching.

A Capricorn Moon is in Uttara Ashadha (three padas), Shravana (four) or the first two padas of Dhanishta. An Aquarius Moon is in the last two padas of Dhanishta, Shatabhisha (four) or Purva Bhadrapada (three). Dhanishta therefore spans the border, and two Moons can share it from opposite signs.

The kootas this sign pair fixes

Graha Maitri is 5 because the engine scores a shared lord in full. Bhakoot is 0 because the signs are 2 and 12 apart; the engine zeroes 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, a rule from two agreeing web references rather than from the books in this library. Bhakoot dosha explains what that label means. So the one koota built on the lords is full while the one built on the distance is empty - a sharp illustration that the two measure different things.

Vashya is 0.5, the engine's lowest value, as the signs fall two groups apart in its table. Varna gives its point only when the first-entered class value is not lower than the second: 0 with Capricorn first, 1 with Aquarius first. The engine's header calls this order dependence unresolved. Varna is used only as a technical koota name.

The kootas the nakshatras decide

Nadi is 8 in 77 of the 81 pairings. Uttara Ashadha and Shravana are Antya in the engine's table; Shatabhisha and Purva Bhadrapada are Aadi; Dhanishta is Madhya. The only way two Moons share a Nadi here is if both are in Dhanishta - one in its Capricorn half, one in its Aquarius half - which happens in 4 pairings.

Gana does most of the varying: 3 in 36 pairings, 0 in 24 and 6 in 21. The zeroes come from Shravana, the Deva star, facing Dhanishta or Shatabhisha, both Rakshasa. The sixes come from Uttara Ashadha with Purva Bhadrapada (both Manushya) and from Capricorn's Dhanishta with Dhanishta or Shatabhisha (all Rakshasa). Yoni is 4 when a Capricorn Moon in Dhanishta meets the Lion of Dhanishta or Purva Bhadrapada (10 pairings) and 2 otherwise. Tara is 1.5 in 61 pairings and 3 in 20.

The range of totals

With Capricorn first, the engine's 81 totals run from 17 to 24.5 out of 36, median 20. With Aquarius first: 18 to 25.5, median 21. The sign kootas fix 5.5 (or 6.5), and Nadi almost always adds 8, so most pairings start from 13.5 and differ only in Gana, Tara and Yoni.

The floor of 17 is a Shravana Moon with a Shatabhisha Moon: Deva against Rakshasa on Gana (0), Monkey against Horse on Yoni (2), Tara 1.5, Nadi kept. The ceiling of 24.5 is Capricorn's Dhanishta with Shatabhisha: both Rakshasa (6), Madhya against Aadi (8), Tara favourable both ways (3), Yoni 2. Dhanishta, with only two Capricorn padas, is the strongest Capricorn placement for this pair - except against itself.

Shravana is the opposite case. It has four padas, more than any other Capricorn star, and against six of Aquarius's nine padas (Dhanishta and Shatabhisha) it loses Gana entirely. That is why so many pairings cluster at the low end and the median sits at 20 rather than higher.

The shared star, Dhanishta, is worth a closer look because it produces both the rare Nadi zero and several of the best results. Two Moons in Dhanishta, one on each side of the border, share the Madhya Nadi and lose the 8, but they match on Gana (6) and Yoni (4, Lion with Lion) and are favourable to each other on Tara. A Capricorn Moon in Dhanishta facing Shatabhisha keeps Nadi and Gana together and reaches the ceiling. Against Purva Bhadrapada it scores 4 on Yoni but only 3 on Gana. Within its two Capricorn padas, Dhanishta is the most rewarding placement this pair has.

A couple's place in this band depends on their stars, so birth times matter. The nakshatra calculator finds the star; Moon sign and nakshatra explains how a star can span two signs.

Worked example: Capricorn 1 degree with Aquarius 1 degree

At 1 degree, the Capricorn Moon is in Uttara Ashadha and the Aquarius Moon in Dhanishta. Capricorn entered first:

The example lands exactly on the median, and it is a typical pairing: the fixed 5.5, Nadi's 8, a middle Gana and a halved Tara. On Tara, the engine counts from one star to the other inclusively, both ways, and treats a remainder of 3, 5 or 7 after dividing by 9 as unfavourable. Uttara Ashadha to Dhanishta counts 3, which fails; back, it counts 26, remainder 8, which passes - 1.5.

Move the Aquarius Moon a few degrees into Shatabhisha and nothing much changes for this Uttara Ashadha Moon - Gana stays at 3, Nadi stays at 8. Move it into Purva Bhadrapada instead and Gana becomes 6. The Capricorn Moon's star matters more: had it been in Shravana, Gana would have fallen to 0.

What the classical texts say

BPHS supplies the sign descriptions and Saturn's lordship of both signs, which is the basis for the full Graha Maitri. It does not contain Ashtakoot; nor do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology, all searched for bhakoot, koota, kuta, nadi, gana and yoni. None comments on Capricorn with Aquarius as a match.

What a score does not tell you

A shared planetary lord and a failing Bhakoot are both facts about the signs, not about two people. This app does not give verdicts on marriage. Mars placement is a separate traditional check, explained in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. Nadi dosha covers the rare same-Nadi case; the love compatibility calculator compares people without Ashtakoot.

What is the Guna Milan score for a Capricorn Moon and an Aquarius Moon?
From 17 to 24.5 out of 36 with Capricorn entered first (median 20), and 18 to 25.5 with Aquarius first (median 21), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
Both signs belong to Saturn - why is the score modest?
Graha Maitri is full, but the signs are neighbours at 2/12, which the engine scores 0 on Bhakoot, and Vashya is only 0.5. The four sign kootas give 5.5 of 15.
Is Nadi dosha likely?
Rarely. Nadi is 0 in only 4 of 81 pairings, all of them two Moons in Dhanishta on either side of the sign border.
Which Capricorn star does best with an Aquarius Moon?
Dhanishta. It is the only Madhya star on the Capricorn side and a Rakshasa star, so against Shatabhisha it keeps both Nadi and Gana, reaching the ceiling of 24.5 with Capricorn first.
Does the order of entry matter?
Yes, by one point, through Varna: 0 with Capricorn first, 1 with Aquarius first.
How do we get our actual score?
Enter both birth details in the match tool for all eight kootas from your real stars.
