In short
With Capricorn entered first, this app scores a Capricorn-Pisces pair from 18.5 to 29.5 out of 36, median 21.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings; Pisces first lowers each total by one. Bhakoot keeps its 7 at the 3/11 distance, Graha Maitri is 3 because Saturn and Jupiter are neutral, and Tara is 1.5 in every pairing.
Capricorn and Pisces sit two signs apart, an earth sign and a water sign ruled by Saturn and Jupiter. In Guna Milan their sign kootas are solid but unspectacular: Bhakoot is whole, Graha Maitri middling, Vashya and Varna partial. On the nakshatra side Tara is fixed, and the variation comes from Nadi and Gana. The interesting feature is that the best pairing, the worked example below, sits eight points above the median - most pairings do noticeably worse than it.
For the signs see Capricorn, Makara rashi and Pisces, Meena rashi. The nakshatra matching guide explains the system; the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Makar and Meen in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 19-20 describes Makar as "lorded by Sani", earthy, of Tamo-Gun, strong at night, with a quadruped first half and a second half "footless, moving in water". Meen (Sl. 22-24) "resembles a pair of fish", is watery, strong at night, "predominant with Sattva-Gun", footless, and ruled by Guru. The text gives both signs night strength and a link to water, and opposes them in quality: Tamas against Sattva. Sl. 5-5.5 classes Makar as windy and Meen as phlegmatic.
A Capricorn Moon is in Uttara Ashadha (three padas), Shravana (four) or Dhanishta (two). A Pisces Moon is in the last pada of Purva Bhadrapada, or in Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati, four each.
The kootas this sign pair fixes
| Koota | Out of | Capricorn first | Pisces first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | 0 | Order-dependent class comparison |
| Vashya | 2 | 1 | 1 | Adjacent groups |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 3 | 3 | Saturn and Jupiter neutral both ways |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | 7 | 3/11 does not fail |
Graha Maitri: in the engine's lists from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Saturn's friends are Mercury and Venus and Jupiter's are the Sun, Moon and Mars. Neither lists the other as friend or enemy, so both are neutral, scoring 3 - the value the engine adopted in October 2026 where four web references agreed. Bhakoot is full: Pisces is the 3rd sign from Capricorn and Capricorn the 11th from Pisces, and the engine zeroes only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8.
Vashya is 1, for adjacent groups. Varna depends on order: the engine gives the point when the first-entered value is not lower than the second, which here means Capricorn first (1) rather than Pisces first (0). The header lists this as unresolved; Varna names the koota only.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
Tara is 1.5 in all 81 pairings. Nadi is the big variable: 8 in 45 pairings, 0 in 36. Uttara Ashadha and Shravana are Antya in the engine's table, and so is Revati, so any of those Capricorn Moons facing a Revati Moon loses the 8 - 28 pairings. Dhanishta and Uttara Bhadrapada, both Madhya, add 8 more.
Gana gives 6 in 31 pairings, 3 in 42 and 0 in 8. The sixes are Uttara Ashadha with either Bhadrapada (all Manushya) and Shravana with Revati (both Deva). The zeroes are Dhanishta (Rakshasa) with Revati (Deva). Yoni is 2 in 71 pairings; it is 4 when Dhanishta meets Purva Bhadrapada (Lion and Lion, 2 pairings) and 0 when Dhanishta meets Revati, the Lion against the Elephant, which the engine lists as natural enemies (8 pairings).
The range of totals
With Capricorn first, the engine's totals run from 18.5 to 29.5 out of 36, median 21.5. With Pisces first: 17.5 to 28.5, median 20.5. The fixed contribution is 12 from the signs and 1.5 from Tara; Gana, Nadi and Yoni supply the rest.
The floor of 18.5 is reached when Nadi is lost and Gana is in the middle: an Uttara Ashadha Moon with a Revati Moon (both Antya; Manushya against Deva), or a Dhanishta Moon with an Uttara Bhadrapada Moon (both Madhya; Rakshasa against Manushya). The ceiling of 29.5 is an Uttara Ashadha Moon with either Bhadrapada - Manushya with Manushya and different Nadis.
Revati is the star that most often holds this pair down. As an Antya star it shares a Nadi with seven of Capricorn's nine padas. It does give something back: against Shravana it is a Deva-Deva match worth 6 on Gana, so a Shravana-Revati pairing still totals 21.5. Against Dhanishta it keeps Nadi but loses both Gana and Yoni - also 21.5. Two very different routes reach the same total.
Seen from the Capricorn side, the three stars give three different profiles. Uttara Ashadha is the most volatile: it holds the ceiling against both Bhadrapadas and the floor against Revati. Shravana is steady in the middle - Deva, so it scores Gana 3 against the Manushya Bhadrapadas and 6 against Revati, with Nadi lost only against Revati. Dhanishta, with two padas, is the most mixed: it shares Uttara Bhadrapada's Madhya Nadi, matches Purva Bhadrapada's Lion for the only full Yoni scores, and clashes with Revati on both Gana and Yoni.
The upshot is a distribution with a long upper tail. The median of 21.5 is close to the floor, because Revati - four of Pisces's nine padas - removes Nadi from most of its pairings, and the high totals need the narrower combination of Uttara Ashadha with a Bhadrapada star.
Which route applies depends on both stars, which in turn depend on birth times. The nakshatra calculator finds them, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains the relationship between sign and star.
Worked example: Capricorn 1 degree with Pisces 1 degree
At 1 degree, the Capricorn Moon is in Uttara Ashadha and the Pisces Moon in the Pisces pada of Purva Bhadrapada. Capricorn entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: first value not lower |
| Vashya | 1 | 2 | Sign: adjacent groups |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: one direction favourable |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Mongoose and Lion |
| Graha Maitri | 3 | 5 | Sign: Saturn and Jupiter, neutral |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: Manushya and Manushya |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: 3/11 |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Antya and Aadi |
| Total | 29.5 | 36 |
The standard example is the best pairing this sign pair offers, which makes it unrepresentative: the median is eight points lower. Gana and Nadi are both full. On Tara, the engine counts from one star to the other inclusively, both ways, and treats a remainder of 3, 5 or 7 after division by 9 as unfavourable. Uttara Ashadha to Purva Bhadrapada counts 5, which fails; back, 24, remainder 6, which passes. Hence 1.5.
Move the Pisces Moon into Revati, near the end of the sign, and this Uttara Ashadha Moon now shares the Antya Nadi and drops to the middle Gana of 3: the total falls from 29.5 to the floor of 18.5. Eleven points move with the star; the signs, and so the four sign kootas, are unchanged.
What the classical texts say
BPHS gives the sign descriptions and the natural relationships used for Graha Maitri. It contains no Ashtakoot rule, and neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology, each searched for bhakoot, koota, kuta, nadi, gana and yoni. Nothing in the corpus speaks to Capricorn with Pisces as a match.
What a score does not tell you
An eleven-point swing from a few degrees of Moon movement shows how mechanical these numbers are. They describe a rule set, not two people, and this app does not issue verdicts on marriage. Mars placement is a separate traditional check - see Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. Nadi dosha covers the same-Nadi rule, and the love compatibility calculator gives a non-Ashtakoot comparison.

- What is the Guna Milan score for a Capricorn Moon and a Pisces Moon?
- From 18.5 to 29.5 out of 36 with Capricorn entered first (median 21.5), and 17.5 to 28.5 with Pisces first (median 20.5), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
- Are Saturn and Jupiter enemies?
- No. In the engine's table from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55 each is neutral to the other, which scores 3 of 5 on Graha Maitri.
- Why do Revati Moons often lower the score?
- Revati is Antya in the engine's Nadi table, as are Uttara Ashadha and Shravana. Same Nadi scores 0 on the 8-point koota.
- Is Bhakoot dosha present for Capricorn and Pisces?
- No. Pisces is the 3rd sign from Capricorn and Capricorn the 11th from Pisces; the engine scores Bhakoot 0 only at 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, so it is the full 7 in every pairing.
- Does entry order matter?
- Yes, by one point, through Varna: 1 with Capricorn first, 0 with Pisces first.
- How do we get our actual score?
- Enter both birth details in the match tool. The two stars decide Nadi and Gana, and most of the total.
