In short
With Aquarius entered first, this app scores an Aquarius-Pisces pair from 11.5 to 24 out of 36, median 17.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings; Pisces first lowers each total by one. The signs fix 5 points: Bhakoot is 0 at the 2/12 distance and Graha Maitri is 3 because Saturn and Jupiter are neutral.
Aquarius and Pisces close the zodiac side by side, and Purva Bhadrapada straddles the line between them - three padas in Aquarius, one in Pisces. In Guna Milan the neighbouring position costs the seven Bhakoot points, and Saturn and Jupiter, the two lords, are neutral to each other. The signs contribute 5 points. The rest is decided by the stars, and here a specific animal rule - the Lion against the Elephant - plays an unusually large part.
For the signs see Aquarius, Kumbha rashi and Pisces, Meena rashi. The nakshatra matching guide explains the kootas; the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Kumbh and Meen in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 links both signs to water, though only one is a water sign. Kumbh (Sl. 21-21.5) is airy, "very strong in daytime", Tamasic, and "resorts to deep water"; its lord is Shani. Meen (Sl. 22-24) is watery, "a water-resorter", strong at night, "predominant with Sattva-Gun", and ruled by Guru. Sl. 5-5.5 classes Kumbh as mixed and Meen as phlegmatic. The text opposes them in quality (Tamas against Sattva) and in time of strength.
An Aquarius Moon is in the last two padas of Dhanishta, all four of Shatabhisha or the first three of Purva Bhadrapada. A Pisces Moon is in the last pada of Purva Bhadrapada, or in Uttara Bhadrapada or Revati (four padas each).
The kootas this sign pair fixes
| Koota | Out of | Aquarius first | Pisces first | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | 0 | Order-dependent class comparison |
| Vashya | 2 | 1 | 1 | Adjacent groups |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 3 | 3 | Saturn and Jupiter neutral both ways |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 0 | 0 | Pisces is 2nd from Aquarius; Aquarius is 12th from Pisces |
Bhakoot is 0: the signs are 2 and 12 apart, and the engine zeroes 2/12 along with 5/9 and 6/8, a rule from two agreeing web references rather than any book in this library. Bhakoot dosha explains the label. Graha Maitri is 3: in the engine's lists from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Saturn's friends are Mercury and Venus and Jupiter's the Sun, Moon and Mars, so neither names the other, and neutral-neutral scores 3.
Vashya is 1 for adjacent groups. Varna gives its point only when the first-entered class value is not lower than the second - true with Aquarius first, false with Pisces first - so each total moves by one with the order. The engine's header lists this as unresolved. Varna is used only as the koota's name.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
Yoni is where this pair is distinctive. Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada are both the Lion in the engine's table, and Revati is the Elephant - a natural enemy of the Lion. So an Aquarius Moon in Dhanishta or Purva Bhadrapada facing a Revati Moon scores 0 on Yoni, which happens in 20 pairings. When either of those Lion stars meets the single Pisces pada of Purva Bhadrapada, it scores 4 (5 pairings). Elsewhere Yoni is 2.
Gana gives 3 in 42 pairings, 0 in 24 and 6 in 15. The zeroes come from the Rakshasa stars of Aquarius, Dhanishta and Shatabhisha, meeting Revati, which is Deva; the sixes from Purva Bhadrapada (Manushya) meeting either Bhadrapada on the Pisces side. Nadi is 8 in 66 pairings and 0 in 15: Dhanishta with Uttara Bhadrapada (both Madhya), and Shatabhisha or Purva Bhadrapada with the Pisces pada of Purva Bhadrapada (all Aadi). Tara is 1.5 in 62 pairings and 3 in 19.
The range of totals
With Aquarius first, the engine's totals run from 11.5 to 24 out of 36, median 17.5. With Pisces first: 10.5 to 23, median 16.5. The fixed sign contribution is 5 (or 4), so the totals are low across the board, and the nakshatras decide whether a couple lands near the floor or near 24.
The floor of 11.5 is a Dhanishta Moon with an Uttara Bhadrapada Moon: shared Madhya Nadi (0), Rakshasa against Manushya (3), Lion against Cow (2), Tara 1.5. The ceiling of 24 is an Aquarius Moon in Purva Bhadrapada with a Pisces Moon in Uttara Bhadrapada: both Manushya (6), Aadi against Madhya (8), Lion against Cow (2), Tara 3. These are neighbouring stars that the engine treats kindly on every count but Yoni.
Revati is the hardest Pisces star for this pair. Against Dhanishta it loses Gana and Yoni together; against Shatabhisha it loses Gana; against Purva Bhadrapada it loses Yoni. It does keep Nadi throughout, being Antya where no Aquarius star is, which stops any Revati pairing from reaching the floor, but it also keeps every one of them at or below the median: worked from the engine's tables, a Revati Moon totals 14.5 against Dhanishta, 16.5 against Shatabhisha and 17.5 against Purva Bhadrapada.
Shatabhisha, the largest Aquarius star with four padas, is the Horse in Yoni, so it escapes the Lion-Elephant rule; but as a Rakshasa star it clashes with Revati on Gana, and as an Aadi star it shares a Nadi with the Pisces pada of Purva Bhadrapada. Against Uttara Bhadrapada it does best: Gana 3, Nadi 8, Yoni 2. Uttara Bhadrapada is, in general, the most comfortable Pisces star for this pair - Manushya, Madhya, the Cow - losing Nadi only against Dhanishta.
All of this turns on the two stars, and so on birth times. The nakshatra calculator finds yours; Moon sign and nakshatra explains how a star can span two signs.
Worked example: Aquarius 1 degree with Pisces 1 degree
At 1 degree, the Aquarius Moon is in Dhanishta and the Pisces Moon in the Pisces pada of Purva Bhadrapada. Aquarius entered first:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: first value not lower |
| Vashya | 1 | 2 | Sign: adjacent groups |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: one direction favourable |
| Yoni | 4 | 4 | Nakshatra: Lion and Lion |
| Graha Maitri | 3 | 5 | Sign: Saturn and Jupiter, neutral |
| Gana | 3 | 6 | Nakshatra: Rakshasa and Manushya |
| Bhakoot | 0 | 7 | Sign: 2/12 |
| Nadi | 8 | 8 | Nakshatra: Madhya and Aadi |
| Total | 21.5 | 36 |
At 21.5 the example is four points above the median, helped by one of the rare full Yoni scores - two Lions. On Tara, the engine counts inclusively from one star to the other, both ways, treating a remainder of 3, 5 or 7 after dividing by 9 as unfavourable. Dhanishta to Purva Bhadrapada counts 3, which fails; back, it counts 26, remainder 8, which passes. Hence 1.5.
Move the Pisces Moon on into Revati and the same Dhanishta Moon meets its Yoni enemy and a Deva star: Yoni and Gana both fall to 0, and although Nadi stays at 8 the total drops by seven points, to 14.5.
What the classical texts say
BPHS supplies the sign descriptions and the friendship lists behind Graha Maitri. It contains no Ashtakoot rule, and neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology, each searched for bhakoot, koota, kuta, nadi, gana and yoni. Nothing in the corpus speaks to Aquarius with Pisces as a match.
What a score does not tell you
A Lion and an Elephant in a Yoni table are technical labels, not descriptions of two people, and a low total is a feature of the rule set. This app does not issue verdicts on marriage. Mars placement is a separate traditional check - see Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. Nadi dosha covers the same-Nadi rule, and the love compatibility calculator offers a different comparison.

- What is the Guna Milan score for an Aquarius Moon and a Pisces Moon?
- From 11.5 to 24 out of 36 with Aquarius entered first (median 17.5), and 10.5 to 23 with Pisces first (median 16.5), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
- Why is Bhakoot 0?
- The signs are neighbours, 2 and 12 apart. The engine scores 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 as 0, following two published references.
- What is the Lion-Elephant rule?
- The engine assigns each nakshatra a Yoni animal and lists seven pairs of natural enemies, Lion and Elephant among them. Dhanishta and Purva Bhadrapada are the Lion and Revati the Elephant, so those pairings score 0 of 4 on Yoni.
- What if both Moons are in Purva Bhadrapada?
- The star spans both signs. Two Moons in it share the Aadi Nadi (0) but match on Gana (6) and Yoni (4, Lion with Lion), and Tara is 3. With Aquarius first that totals 18, a little above the median.
- Does the order of entry matter?
- Yes, by one point, through Varna: 1 with Aquarius first, 0 with Pisces first.
- How do we get our real score?
- Enter both birth details in the match tool. Your stars decide Yoni, Gana, Nadi and Tara.
