In short
Two Capricorn Moons score between 23 and 29.5 out of 36 in this app, median 28, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings. The sign kootas are full at 15; the floor of 23 comes from Uttara Ashadha meeting Shravana, two stars that share the Antya Nadi without the Gana and Yoni gains of a shared star.
With both Moons in Capricorn, the sign half of Guna Milan is full - Saturn on both sides, a single Vashya group, a 1/1 distance that Bhakoot does not penalise. The interest lies in the stars. Capricorn holds three, and two of them, Uttara Ashadha and Shravana, share a Nadi in the engine's table even though they are different stars. That one fact produces the lowest totals for this pair, and it is not the case most people would guess.
The sign has its own page, Capricorn, Makara rashi. The nakshatra matching guide covers the eight kootas and links every pair; the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Makar in BPHS
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 19-20 describes Makar as "lorded by Sani", of Tamo-Gun, earthy, linked with the South, strong at night and rising with its back. It has a large body and a variegated complexion, resorts to forests and lands, and is quadruped in its first half and "footless, moving in water" in its second. Sl. 5-5.5 groups it with Vrishabh and Kanya as the windy signs. The engine uses Saturn as the lord and the sign's Varna and Vashya values; the rest is description.
A Capricorn Moon is in one of nine padas: the last three of Uttara Ashadha, the four of Shravana, or the first two of Dhanishta. Two Capricorn Moons give 81 combinations.
The kootas this sign pair fixes: all 15
| Koota | Out of | Capricorn with Capricorn | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Same value; order cannot matter |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | Same group |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Saturn rules both |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | 1/1 is not a failing distance |
Graha Maitri is 5 because the engine gives full marks whenever the two lords are the same graha. Bhakoot is 7 because the engine fails only 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, following two agreeing web references; no book in this library contains a Bhakoot rule. Varna, which compares the first-entered value with the second and can depend on order for mixed pairs, is 1 either way with identical values; the scratch run confirmed the same totals in both orders. Varna is used only as the koota's name.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
The three Capricorn stars in the engine's tables:
- Uttara Ashadha (three padas): Antya Nadi, Manushya Gana, Mongoose Yoni.
- Shravana (four padas): Antya Nadi, Deva Gana, Monkey Yoni.
- Dhanishta (two padas): Madhya Nadi, Rakshasa Gana, Lion Yoni.
Because Uttara Ashadha and Shravana share the Antya Nadi, Nadi is 0 in 53 of the 81 pairings - any combination of those two stars, plus Dhanishta with itself - and 8 in only 28. Gana runs through all three values: 6 for the same star (29 pairings), 3 for a Manushya crossing (36), and 0 for Shravana (Deva) with Dhanishta (Rakshasa), 16 pairings. Yoni is 4 for the same animal (29) and 2 otherwise (52); the three animals include no enemy pair. Tara is 3 in 69 pairings and 1.5 in 12.
Every possible total
With the sign kootas fixed at 15, the stars produce four outcomes:
- Same star: Tara 3, Yoni 4, Gana 6, Nadi 0 - 28 (29 pairings).
- Shravana with Dhanishta: Tara 3, Yoni 2, Gana 0, Nadi 8 - 28 (16 pairings).
- Uttara Ashadha with Dhanishta: Tara 1.5, Yoni 2, Gana 3, Nadi 8 - 29.5 (12 pairings).
- Uttara Ashadha with Shravana: Tara 3, Yoni 2, Gana 3, Nadi 0 - 23 (24 pairings).
Those counts reproduce the engine's figures: a floor of 23, a ceiling of 29.5, and a median of 28 because the 24 lowest totals are followed by 45 at 28. The floor is the surprise. Two Moons in the same star lose Nadi too, but they are compensated with full Gana and Yoni. Uttara Ashadha and Shravana lose Nadi without that compensation, because they are different stars with different Gana and animal.
Dhanishta, only two padas in Capricorn, is the star that lifts a pairing. It is the sign's only Madhya star, so it brings the Nadi points against either neighbour. Against Uttara Ashadha it produces the ceiling of 29.5, Tara at 1.5 being the only shortfall: the inclusive count from Uttara Ashadha to Dhanishta is 3, a remainder the engine treats as unfavourable. Against Shravana it costs Gana instead, and the total settles at 28.
Shravana is the largest star in the sign, with four of the nine padas, and so it shapes the distribution more than its neighbours. As the only Deva star it can never match another Capricorn star on Gana except itself, and as an Antya star it shares a Nadi with Uttara Ashadha. A Shravana Moon therefore scores 28 against another Shravana Moon or against Dhanishta, and 23 against Uttara Ashadha. It never reaches the ceiling.
The same structure appears on the Virgo and Virgo page, where two of Virgo's three stars also share a Nadi and the median again sits at 28. The parallel is not a coincidence of meaning; it is a coincidence of tables. Both Virgo and Capricorn happen to contain two adjacent stars of one Nadi followed by a two-pada border star of another, and the scoring follows mechanically from that arrangement. Where the two pages differ - Capricorn reaches 29.5, Virgo stops at 28 - the difference again traces to the Gana and Tara values of the particular stars, not to anything about the signs themselves.
The range of totals
Across all 81 pairings two Capricorn Moons score 23 to 29.5 out of 36, median 28. The range is narrow, and the floor is high. The stars still decide where a couple falls within it, and the difference between 23 and 29.5 is mostly a question of whether a Dhanishta Moon is involved. The nakshatra calculator tells you which star you have; Moon sign and nakshatra explains how a sign holds parts of three stars.
Worked example: Capricorn 1 degree with Capricorn 1 degree
Both Moons at 1 degree of Capricorn are in Uttara Ashadha. ashtakoot() returns:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: same value |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | Sign: same group |
| Tara | 3 | 3 | Nakshatra: same star |
| Yoni | 4 | 4 | Nakshatra: Mongoose and Mongoose |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Sign: Saturn and Saturn |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: Manushya and Manushya |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: 1/1 |
| Nadi | 0 | 8 | Nakshatra: same Nadi (Antya) |
| Total | 28 | 36 |
All kootas full except Nadi - the pattern every shared star produces. The engine reports "Same Nadi - traditionally flagged; worth discussing openly" and stops there. Some practitioners make exceptions for a shared star or sign; neither the engine nor the books in this library contain one, so this page applies none.
Move one Moon from Uttara Ashadha into Shravana, a few degrees on, and the total does not rise - it falls to 23, because Nadi stays at 0 while Gana and Yoni drop. Move it instead into Dhanishta, near the end of the sign, and it rises to 29.5. Nadi dosha discusses the same-Nadi rule in context.
What the classical texts say
BPHS describes Makar and gives the planetary relationships the engine uses; it does not contain Ashtakoot. Neither do Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology - a search for bhakoot, koota, kuta, nadi, gana and yoni finds no matching rule. The corpus does not discuss two Capricorn Moons as a match.
What a score does not tell you
Even 29.5 is a statement about a rule set, not about two people, and this app gives no verdict on marriage. Mars placement is a separate traditional check, covered in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. For a lighter comparison outside Ashtakoot, there is the love compatibility calculator.

- What is the Guna Milan score for two Capricorn Moons?
- From 23 to 29.5 out of 36, median 28, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
- Why is the lowest score not a same-star pairing?
- A shared star loses Nadi but gains full Gana and Yoni, totalling 28. Uttara Ashadha with Shravana loses Nadi too (both Antya) but without those gains, totalling 23.
- Which pairing scores highest?
- Uttara Ashadha with Dhanishta, at 29.5. Dhanishta is the only Madhya star in Capricorn, so it keeps Nadi against the others.
- Do Uttara Ashadha and Shravana count as the same star?
- No. They are different nakshatras with different Gana and Yoni in the engine's tables. They only share a Nadi group (Antya), which is enough to set Nadi to 0 when they meet.
- Does the order of entry matter?
- No. Both Moons carry the same Varna value, so the order-sensitive koota is 1 either way.
- How do we get our real score?
- Enter both birth details in the match tool. The stars decide between 23, 28 and 29.5.
