In short
Two Virgo Moons score between 23 and 28 out of 36 in this app's Ashtakoot engine, with a median of 28, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings. The four sign kootas are full at 15, but Nadi is 0 in most pairings because two of Virgo's three stars share the same Nadi.
When both people have the Moon in Virgo, the sign half of Guna Milan is as good as the system allows. That sounds like the end of the story, and it is not. The other half of the score is read from the Moon's nakshatra, and for two Virgo Moons it behaves in a way that surprises many people: sharing a sign makes it more likely, not less, that the pair shares a Nadi.
Background on the sign is on Virgo, Kanya rashi. The nakshatra matching guide explains all eight kootas once and links every Moon-sign pair, and the Kundli matching calculator scores two actual birth charts rather than a sign pair.
Kanya in BPHS, and what one sign shared means
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 13-14 describes Kanya as "a hill-resorter" that "is strong in daytime", a biped sign of medium build, Tamasic in quality and ruled by Budh (Mercury). Sl. 5-5.5 puts it with Vrishabh and Makar among the windy signs. None of that is a matching rule; it is the sign as the text sees it, and the engine uses only two facts from this neighbourhood of the text: the sign's lord and the classification behind its Varna value.
A Virgo Moon sits in one of nine nakshatra quarters (padas): the last three of Uttara Phalguni, all four of Hasta, and the first two of Chitra. Two Virgo Moons therefore give 9 x 9 = 81 combinations. Because the sign is the same, the count from one Moon sign to the other is 1 in both directions.
The sign kootas: a full 15 for any Virgo pair
Four of the eight kootas read only the Moon sign. With the same sign on both sides, each of them takes its maximum in all 81 pairings:
| Koota | Out of | Reads | Virgo with Virgo | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | Sign | 1 | Same sign, same class value in the engine's table |
| Vashya | 2 | Sign | 2 | Same Vashya group |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | Sign | 5 | Both Moon signs ruled by Mercury |
| Bhakoot | 7 | Sign | 7 | Distance 1/1 is not one of 2/12, 5/9, 6/8 |
| Tara | 3 | Nakshatra | 1.5 or 3 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Yoni | 4 | Nakshatra | 0, 2 or 4 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Gana | 6 | Nakshatra | 0, 3 or 6 | Depends on the two birth stars |
| Nadi | 8 | Nakshatra | 0 or 8 | Depends on the two birth stars |
Graha Maitri (the koota) compares the two sign lords, and the engine gives 5 whenever the lord is the same graha. Bhakoot (the koota) fails only for the 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 distances; a same-sign pair is none of those, so it keeps all 7. Varna (the koota) compares the first person's class value with the second's, which can make the order of entry matter for mixed pairs. Here both values are identical, so it is 1 whichever Moon is entered first, and the totals in the scratch run were the same in both orders. Varna is used only as the koota's technical name; it says nothing about people.
The nakshatra kootas: why Nadi pulls the total down
With 15 points fixed, the remaining 21 come from Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi. Here the make-up of Virgo matters. In the engine's Nadi table Uttara Phalguni and Hasta are both Aadi, while Chitra is Madhya. So two Virgo Moons in Uttara Phalguni or Hasta, in any combination, share a Nadi and score 0 on Nadi. That covers 7 of Virgo's 9 padas on each side, which is why the scratch run found Nadi 0 in 53 of the 81 pairings and 8 in only 28.
Gana (the koota) works on a different grouping: Uttara Phalguni is Manushya, Hasta is Deva and Chitra is Rakshasa in the engine's list. A Hasta Moon with a Chitra Moon is a Deva-Rakshasa pair and scores 0; the same star on both sides scores 6. Yoni (the koota) assigns Uttara Phalguni the Cow, Hasta the Buffalo and Chitra the Tiger; the engine treats Cow and Tiger as natural enemies, so an Uttara Phalguni Moon with a Chitra Moon gets 0 there. Tara is 3 in 69 pairings and 1.5 in the other 12.
The two big kootas therefore pull against each other in an interesting way. The pairings where Nadi is 8 are the ones involving Chitra, and those are also the pairings where Gana or Yoni tend to drop. The result is a narrow band: no pairing of two Virgo Moons falls below 23 or climbs above 28.
The range of totals for two Virgo Moons
Across all 81 pairings the engine scores two Virgo Moons from 23 to 28 out of 36, with a median of 28. The median and the maximum coincide: more than half the pairings land exactly on 28. That is a tight spread compared with most cross-sign pairs, and it is tight for a reason. Full sign kootas keep the floor high, while the shared Nadi of Uttara Phalguni and Hasta keeps the ceiling from moving past 28.
The practical point is that a Virgo-Virgo couple cannot learn much more from the sign pair than "somewhere in the twenties". Whether Nadi is 0 or 8, and whether Gana or Yoni drop, depends on which star each Moon occupies, and that needs a birth time. The nakshatra calculator finds the star; Moon sign and nakshatra explains how the two layers relate.
Worked example: Virgo 1 degree with Virgo 1 degree
Put both Moons at 1 degree of Virgo. Both are then in Uttara Phalguni, the same star, and ashtakoot() returns:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: identical class value |
| Vashya | 2 | 2 | Sign: same Vashya group |
| Tara | 3 | 3 | Nakshatra: the count is good both ways |
| Yoni | 4 | 4 | Nakshatra: Cow and Cow |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 5 | Sign: Mercury rules both |
| Gana | 6 | 6 | Nakshatra: Manushya and Manushya |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: distance 1/1 |
| Nadi | 0 | 8 | Nakshatra: same Nadi (Aadi) |
| Total | 28 | 36 |
Every koota except one is at its maximum, and the one that is not is the largest of all. The engine's note for this result reads "Same Nadi - traditionally flagged; worth discussing openly." That is the honest framing: the engine records that a traditional rule is triggered and leaves the discussion to the people involved. It is the same 28 that sits at the median for this sign pair.
Some practitioners apply exceptions when two people share a star or a sign. Neither the books in this library nor this app's engine contain such an exception, so this page does not apply one. The Nadi dosha page explains what the zero means and what it does not.
What the classical texts say about a Virgo-Virgo match
BPHS describes Kanya (Ch. 4) and the natural relationships of the grahas (Ch. 3 Sl. 55), and the engine draws on both. None of the corpus books - BPHS, Saravali, Bhrigu Sutras, Advanced Predictive Astrology - sets out the eight kootas or scores a pair of Moon signs. The Bhakoot rule the engine uses comes from two published web references named in its header and in docs/numerology-rules.md section 7e, not from a classical text in this library.
What a score does not tell you
A 28 is not a promise and a 23 is not a warning. The number is a description of how two Moon positions meet one traditional rule set, and it says nothing about the character of either person. Many families also look at Mars placement, which is a separate check covered in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. For a lighter comparison that does not use Ashtakoot, there is the love compatibility calculator.

- What is the Guna Milan score for two Virgo Moons?
- Across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings this app scores two Virgo Moons from 23 to 28 out of 36, with a median of 28. The four sign kootas give the full 15 in every pairing.
- If every sign koota is full, why is the total not higher?
- Because Nadi, worth 8, is 0 in most Virgo-Virgo pairings. Uttara Phalguni and Hasta share the Aadi Nadi in the engine's table, and together they cover seven of Virgo's nine padas.
- Does the order we are entered in change anything?
- No. Varna is the only order-sensitive koota in the engine, and with the same sign on both sides it scores 1 either way. The scratch run gave identical totals in both orders.
- Can I know our real score from the sign alone?
- Not exactly. The sign settles 15 points; the other 21 depend on the two nakshatras. Enter both birth details in the match tool for the full reading.
- Is a same-Nadi result a reason not to marry?
- This app does not give that verdict. The engine flags the result as traditional and worth discussing; it does not describe the people, and the classical books in this library do not contain the Ashtakoot system at all.
