A Virgo Moon with a Libra Moon in Ashtakoot matching: 18.5 to 26.5 out of 36 across 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings with Virgo entered first. Mercury and Venus are friends, the 2/12 distance zeroes Bhakoot, and the entry order moves the score.

In short

With the Virgo Moon entered first, this app scores a Virgo-Libra pair from 18.5 to 26.5 out of 36, median 20, over all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings; with Libra first every total is one point higher. Graha Maitri is full because Mercury and Venus are mutual friends, but the neighbouring-sign 2/12 distance sets Bhakoot to 0.

Virgo and Libra are next-door signs, and in Guna Milan that adjacency is the single most important thing about them. It gives this pair one of the friendliest lord combinations in the zodiac and, in the same stroke, removes the seven Bhakoot points. The four nakshatra kootas then decide where in an 8-point band the pair lands. This page walks through the numbers as this app's engine produces them.

The signs on their own are covered at Virgo, Kanya rashi and Libra, Tula rashi. The nakshatra matching guide lays out the eight kootas, and the Kundli matching calculator gives a real score from two birth charts.

Kanya and Tula side by side

BPHS Ch. 4 places these two signs in consecutive slokas and gives them a fair amount in common. Kanya (Sl. 13-14) is ruled by Budh (Mercury), is strong in daytime, biped and of medium build. Tula (Sl. 15-16.5) is "a Seershodaya Rasi, rising with its head", is likewise strong in daytime, biped and of medium build, and is ruled by Shukr (Venus). Where they differ is in quality: the text calls Kanya Tamasic and Tula predominant in Rajo-Gun, and Sl. 5-5.5 classes Kanya as windy and Tula as mixed.

A Virgo Moon falls in one of nine padas: three of Uttara Phalguni, four of Hasta and two of Chitra. A Libra Moon falls in the other two padas of Chitra, the four of Swati or three of Vishakha. Chitra straddles the border, so the two signs share a birth star - a detail that matters for Nadi below.

The kootas this sign pair fixes

Graha Maitri (the koota) is where this pair is strongest. In the engine's lists, built on BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Mercury's friends are the Sun and Venus, and Venus's friends are Mercury and Saturn. Each lord names the other, which is a mutual friendship and the full 5. Vashya (the koota) adds its full 2, because the engine places both signs in the same group.

Bhakoot (the koota) takes the opposite line. Counting inclusively, Libra is the 2nd sign from Virgo and Virgo the 12th from Libra. The engine scores 0 for 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8, following two web references ([A] and [B] in its header) that agree on the rule; no book in this library contains it. A 2/12 zero is one of the cases often called Bhakoot dosha.

Varna and the order of entry

For this pair the order of entry is not neutral. The engine's Varna (the koota) awards its single point when the first person's class value is at least the second's, and the two signs carry different values in its table. Virgo first gives 0; Libra first gives 1. Every total on this page therefore moves by exactly one point when the order is swapped. The engine's header records this as an open point (#36) that no reference consulted has settled. Varna here is a technical label for a sign classification; it is not a statement about anyone.

What the nakshatras add

Nadi (the koota) is unusually kind to this pair. Uttara Phalguni and Hasta are Aadi in the engine's table, Chitra is Madhya, and Swati and Vishakha are Antya. Only when both Moons are in Chitra - the star the signs share - do the two Nadis match. That happens in 4 of the 81 pairings; the other 77 score the full 8.

Yoni (the koota) is more mixed. Uttara Phalguni is the Cow, while Chitra and Vishakha are both the Tiger, and the engine treats Cow and Tiger as natural enemies: an Uttara Phalguni Moon facing a Libra Moon in Chitra or Vishakha scores 0, which happens in 15 pairings. On the other hand Hasta and Swati are both the Buffalo, and a matching animal earns the full 4. Gana (the koota) spreads almost evenly across 0, 3 and 6, and Tara is 1.5 in 61 pairings and 3 in 20.

The range of totals

With the Virgo Moon entered first, the 81 totals run from 18.5 to 26.5 out of 36, with a median of 20. Enter Libra first and the same pairings run from 19.5 to 27.5, median 21. The sign kootas contribute 7 (or 8) in every case, Nadi nearly always adds 8, and the remaining swing comes from Gana and Yoni. The median sits near the bottom of the range: most pairings cluster low, and a handful reach the upper twenties when Gana and Yoni both line up.

Because those swing kootas depend on the exact star, two Moons a few hours apart in time can land on different sides of a boundary. The nakshatra calculator tells you which star you have, and Moon sign and nakshatra explains why the star and the sign are separate inputs.

Worked example: Virgo 1 degree with Libra 1 degree

Place the first Moon at 1 degree of Virgo (Uttara Phalguni) and the second at 1 degree of Libra (Chitra). Entered in that order, ashtakoot() returns:

Tara deserves a line of its own, because it is the koota people find hardest to follow. The engine counts from one birth star to the other, inclusive, in both directions, and divides each count by 9. A remainder of 3, 5 or 7 counts as unfavourable. From Uttara Phalguni the count to Chitra is 3, an unfavourable remainder; from Chitra back to Uttara Phalguni it is 26, remainder 8, which is fine. One good direction out of two is worth 1.5.

The 19.5 is a fair picture of the typical Virgo-Libra pairing: 7 from the signs, 8 from Nadi, and the rest scraped together from Tara and Gana, with Yoni at 0 because of the Cow-Tiger rule. Move the Virgo Moon a few degrees on into Hasta and the Yoni enmity disappears, which is exactly the kind of change the sign pair cannot predict.

What the classical texts say about this pairing

The corpus describes Kanya and Tula and gives the natural relationships the engine uses for Graha Maitri. It does not contain the eight kootas: BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras and Advanced Predictive Astrology were all searched for bhakoot, koota, kuta, nadi, gana and yoni without finding a matching rule. Nothing in them comments on Virgo with Libra as a marriage pairing, so this page does not either.

What a score does not tell you

A Guna Milan total measures two Moon positions against a fixed list of rules. It cannot tell anyone how a relationship will go, and this app does not offer that verdict. Mars placement is a separate traditional check, explained in Mangal dosha: what it is and is not. If Nadi is your concern, Nadi dosha covers it; for a non-Ashtakoot comparison try the love compatibility calculator.

What is the Guna Milan score for a Virgo Moon and a Libra Moon?
Between 18.5 and 26.5 out of 36 with Virgo entered first (median 20), and 19.5 to 27.5 with Libra first (median 21), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
Why does the order of entry change the total?
The engine's Varna koota gives its one point only when the first person's class value is at least the second's. Virgo and Libra carry different values, so Varna is 0 one way and 1 the other. The engine flags this as unresolved.
Why is Bhakoot 0?
Libra is the 2nd sign from Virgo, and the engine scores the 2/12 distance as 0, along with 5/9 and 6/8. The rule comes from two published references named in the engine, not from the classical books in this library.
Are Mercury and Venus friends?
Yes, in the natural relationships the engine takes from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, each lists the other as a friend, so Graha Maitri scores the full 5 for this pair.
How do we get our actual score?
Enter both birth dates, times and places in the match tool. The sign pair fixes four kootas; the nakshatras decide the rest.
