In short

A Libra Moon with a Sagittarius Moon scores 16.5 to 27.5 out of 36 in this app, median 24.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings with Libra entered first, one point less with Sagittarius first. Bhakoot is a full 7 at the 3/11 distance, Graha Maitri is 1 because Jupiter counts Venus an enemy, and only Gana and Nadi vary.

Libra and Sagittarius sit three signs apart - an air sign and a fire sign in a sextile, in Western terms. In Guna Milan the interesting thing about them is how much is settled in advance. Six of the eight kootas come out the same in every one of the 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings, leaving only Gana and Nadi to move the total. That makes this one of the more predictable sign pairs, and a useful one for seeing how the system is built.

Sign pages: Libra, Tula rashi and Sagittarius, Dhanu rashi. The whole system: the nakshatra matching guide. Your own score: the Kundli matching calculator.

Tula and Dhanu in the text

BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 15-16.5 describes Tula as rising with its head, strong in daytime, of Rajo-Gun, a biped of medium build ruled by Shukr. Sl. 17-18.5 gives Dhanu: it too "rises with its head", is lorded by Guru, Sattvic, fiery, strong at night, "A royal Rasi", and half biped, half quadruped. Sl. 5-5.5 calls Tula mixed and Dhanu bilious. The text gives them one shared feature, the head-first rising, and otherwise contrasts them.

A Libra Moon is in Chitra (two padas), Swati (four) or Vishakha (three). A Sagittarius Moon is in Mula (four), Purva Ashadha (four) or the first pada of Uttara Ashadha. No star is shared between the two signs.

The kootas this sign pair fixes

On Graha Maitri Jupiter is the harder party. In the engine's lists from BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Jupiter's enemies are Mercury and Venus. Venus's friends are Mercury and Saturn and its enemies the Sun and Moon, so it is neutral towards Jupiter. Neutral against hostile scores 1. The engine's references split on that cell (0.5 in one, 1 in another), and it kept the 1 it already used.

Bhakoot is the counterweight: Sagittarius is the 3rd sign from Libra and Libra the 11th from Sagittarius, neither of them a zero-scoring distance under the engine's rule (2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 fail, per two agreeing web references). The pair keeps all 7.

Varna depends on the order of entry: the engine awards it when the first-entered value is not lower than the second, true for Libra first and false for Sagittarius first. The header records this as an unresolved point. Varna is used only as a technical koota name.

What the nakshatras decide - and what they do not

Two of the four nakshatra kootas do not vary at all for this pair. Tara is 1.5 in every pairing. Yoni is 2 in every pairing: Libra's Tiger and Buffalo meet Sagittarius's Dog, Monkey and Mongoose without a match and without one of the engine's enemy pairs. So 3.5 more points are fixed, and with the sign kootas that makes 13.5 known before the stars are considered.

Gana supplies the first real variation. Mula is Rakshasa, Purva and Uttara Ashadha are Manushya; on the Libra side Chitra and Vishakha are Rakshasa and Swati is Deva. Rakshasa with Rakshasa (a Chitra or Vishakha Moon with a Mula Moon) scores 6, in 20 pairings. Swati with Mula is Deva with Rakshasa, 0, in 16. Everything else is a Manushya crossing worth 3 - 45 pairings.

Nadi is 8 in 66 pairings. It is lost in two cases: a Chitra Moon (Madhya) with a Purva Ashadha Moon (Madhya), and a Swati or Vishakha Moon (Antya) with the single Uttara Ashadha pada (Antya). Mula, which is Aadi, never shares a Nadi with a Libra star.

The range of totals

With Libra first, the engine's 81 totals run from 16.5 to 27.5 out of 36, median 24.5. With Sagittarius first, 15.5 to 26.5, median 23.5. Of the eleven-point spread, eight is Nadi and the rest Gana.

The structure makes the extremes easy to read. Every pairing with Nadi 0 sits at the floor of 16.5: the fixed 13.5 plus a Manushya-crossing Gana of 3. Every pairing with Mula on the Sagittarius side and a Rakshasa star on the Libra side reaches the ceiling of 27.5. A Swati Moon facing Mula sits in between, keeping Nadi but losing Gana, at 21.5.

Purva Ashadha, the other four-pada star of Sagittarius, gives the middle of the distribution. It is Manushya, so its Gana against any Libra star is the in-between 3, and it is Madhya in Nadi, so it keeps the full 8 against Swati and Vishakha and loses it only against Chitra. A Purva Ashadha Moon with a Swati or Vishakha Moon therefore totals 24.5 - exactly the median - which is no coincidence: those combinations make up a large block of the 81 pairings.

Put differently, the engine sorts this pair into three tiers almost mechanically: 27.5 when Gana and Nadi are both full, 24.5 or 21.5 when one of them gives way, and 16.5 when Nadi is lost. There are few in-between values because so much else is fixed.

So for this pair the most useful single fact is whether the Sagittarius Moon is in Mula. The nakshatra calculator tells you; Moon sign and nakshatra explains how stars sit within signs.

Worked example: Libra 1 degree with Sagittarius 1 degree

The Libra Moon at 1 degree is in Chitra; the Sagittarius Moon at 1 degree is in Mula. Libra entered first:

This example sits at the very top of the range. Both variable kootas are full, so the 27.5 is the fixed 13.5 plus Gana 6 and Nadi 8. What it lacks is all on the fixed side - 4 points on Graha Maitri, 1 on Vashya, 2 on Yoni and 1.5 on Tara - and no choice of stars within these two signs can recover them.

Tara can be checked from the engine's rule: count from one star to the other inclusively, both ways, and treat a remainder of 3, 5 or 7 after dividing by 9 as unfavourable. Chitra to Mula is 6, which passes; Mula back to Chitra is 23, remainder 5, which fails. One of two gives 1.5 - and for this pair that pattern holds in all 81 pairings.

What the classical texts say

BPHS supplies the sign descriptions and the friendship lists used for Graha Maitri; that is the extent of the corpus's contribution. Neither BPHS nor Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras or Advanced Predictive Astrology contains an Ashtakoot rule, and none speaks to Libra with Sagittarius as a match. The Bhakoot and Graha Maitri point values come from web references named in the engine's header.

What a score does not tell you

A predictable score is still only a score. It describes how two Moon positions fit one traditional rule set; it does not describe two people, and this app does not give a verdict on marriage. Mars placement is a separate check - Mangal dosha: what it is and is not explains it. A same-Nadi result is discussed in Nadi dosha, and the love compatibility calculator compares people without Ashtakoot.

What is the Guna Milan score for a Libra Moon and a Sagittarius Moon?
From 16.5 to 27.5 out of 36 with Libra entered first (median 24.5), and 15.5 to 26.5 with Sagittarius first (median 23.5), across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
Which kootas actually vary for this pair?
Only Gana and Nadi. Varna, Vashya, Graha Maitri and Bhakoot are fixed by the signs, and Tara (1.5) and Yoni (2) happen to come out the same in all 81 pairings.
Why is Graha Maitri 1?
Jupiter lists Venus among its enemies in the engine's friendship table (BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55), while Venus is neutral to Jupiter. That scores 1 of 5.
Does entry order change the result?
Yes, by one point, through the Varna koota. The engine flags the order dependence as unresolved.
How do we get our own score?
Enter both birth details in the match tool. For this pair the two stars decide Gana and Nadi, and those decide the total.
