In short
A Virgo Moon with a Sagittarius Moon scores 13.5 to 29 out of 36 in this app, median 24.5, across all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings with Virgo entered first, and one point less throughout with Sagittarius first. Bhakoot is a full 7 at the 4/10 distance; Graha Maitri is 1 because Jupiter lists Mercury as an enemy.
Virgo and Sagittarius are both dual signs, square to each other at the 4/10 distance, and ruled by two grahas that the classical friendship table does not pair kindly: Mercury and Jupiter. In Guna Milan that combination produces a familiar shape - a full Bhakoot, a thin Graha Maitri - and leaves most of the outcome to the two birth stars. This page sets out what the engine fixes, what it leaves open, and one worked pairing.
Each sign has its own page: Virgo, Kanya rashi and Sagittarius, Dhanu rashi. The nakshatra matching guide explains the eight kootas, and the Kundli matching calculator scores two real charts.
Kanya and Dhanu in the text
BPHS Ch. 4 Sl. 5-5.5 names the signs movable, fixed and dual in turn, which makes both Kanya (the 6th) and Dhanu (the 9th) dual. The same sloka puts Dhanu among the bilious signs and Kanya among the windy. Sl. 17-18.5 describes Dhanu as lorded by Guru (Jupiter), Sattvic, fiery and "A royal Rasi", "biped in first half" with a quadruped second half, "splendourous". Kanya in Sl. 13-14 is Tamasic, a medium-built biped strong in daytime, ruled by Budh. Little overlaps beyond the dual nature.
The nine Virgo padas are three of Uttara Phalguni, four of Hasta and two of Chitra. The nine Sagittarius padas are four of Mula, four of Purva Ashadha and the first of Uttara Ashadha. Uttara Ashadha appears again in Capricorn, but no star is shared between this particular pair.
The kootas this sign pair fixes
| Koota | Out of | Virgo first | Sagittarius first | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | 0 | Class values compared first-to-second |
| Vashya | 2 | 1 | 1 | Adjacent Vashya groups |
| Graha Maitri | 5 | 1 | 1 | Mercury neutral to Jupiter; Jupiter hostile to Mercury |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | 7 | 4/10 is not 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 |
Graha Maitri (the koota) reads the two sign lords. In the engine's version of BPHS Ch. 3 Sl. 55, Jupiter's enemies are Mercury and Venus, while Mercury's friends are the Sun and Venus and its only enemy is the Moon - so Mercury is neutral towards Jupiter. Neutral on one side and hostile on the other scores 1 out of 5. The engine kept that value because its references give 0.5 and 1 for the same cell and do not agree.
Bhakoot (the koota) counts Sagittarius as the 4th sign from Virgo and Virgo as the 10th from Sagittarius. Neither is a failing distance under the rule the engine adopted from two agreeing web references, so the pair keeps 7 points regardless of stars. Many square relationships between the Moons score this way; the zeroes fall on 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8.
Varna (the koota) gives its point only when the first-entered class value is not lower than the second. For Virgo and Sagittarius that is true one way round and false the other, so the engine scores 1 with Virgo first and 0 with Sagittarius first. Its header notes the order dependence as an open question. The term is the koota's name only.
The kootas the nakshatras decide
One of the four is settled after all. Yoni is 2 in every pairing: Virgo's Cow, Buffalo and Tiger meet Sagittarius's Dog, Monkey and Mongoose, and the engine finds no matching animal and no enemy pair among them. Tara gives 1.5 in 62 pairings and 3 in 19.
The other two carry the variation. On Nadi, Uttara Phalguni and Hasta are Aadi, as is Mula; Chitra and Purva Ashadha are both Madhya. Those overlaps give a same-Nadi 0 in 36 pairings, leaving 45 with the full 8. On Gana, Mula is Rakshasa and both Ashadhas are Manushya. A Hasta Moon (Deva) facing a Mula Moon is the only Deva-Rakshasa pairing type, giving 0 in 16 pairings; 3 appears in 42 and 6 in 23.
The range of totals
Virgo first, the engine's 81 totals run from 13.5 to 29 out of 36, median 24.5. Sagittarius first, they run from 12.5 to 28, median 23.5. The sign kootas are a constant 10 (or 9), Yoni a constant 2. Everything else is Tara, Gana and especially Nadi, which on its own accounts for eight of the roughly fifteen points between floor and ceiling.
Mula is the star to watch. It is Aadi in Nadi and Rakshasa in Gana, so a Virgo Moon in Hasta facing a Mula Moon loses on both counts, while the same Hasta Moon facing Purva Ashadha does well on both. Finding your exact star is the job of the nakshatra calculator; Moon sign and nakshatra explains the two layers.
A Virgo Moon in Chitra, at the very end of the sign, behaves almost in reverse. Chitra is Madhya and Rakshasa in the engine's tables. Against Mula it differs in Nadi and matches in Gana, which is the best combination on offer; against Purva Ashadha it shares the Madhya Nadi and loses 8. So the "good" and "bad" Sagittarius stars are not fixed - they depend on which part of Virgo the other Moon occupies, and only two birth times settle the question.
Uttara Ashadha, with a single pada in Sagittarius, is the least common case: it is Antya in Nadi, which no Virgo star shares, and Manushya in Gana. A Sagittarius Moon there always collects the full 8 on Nadi against a Virgo Moon.
Worked example: Virgo 1 degree with Sagittarius 1 degree
Both Moons at 1 degree of their signs: Uttara Phalguni for Virgo, Mula for Sagittarius. With Virgo entered first, ashtakoot() gives:
| Koota | Score | Out of | What decided it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varna | 1 | 1 | Sign: first value not lower |
| Vashya | 1 | 2 | Sign: adjacent groups |
| Tara | 1.5 | 3 | Nakshatra: one direction favourable |
| Yoni | 2 | 4 | Nakshatra: Cow and Dog, neither same nor enemies |
| Graha Maitri | 1 | 5 | Sign: Mercury and Jupiter, neutral and hostile |
| Gana | 3 | 6 | Nakshatra: Manushya and Rakshasa |
| Bhakoot | 7 | 7 | Sign: 4/10 distance |
| Nadi | 0 | 8 | Nakshatra: both Aadi |
| Total | 16.5 | 36 |
At 16.5 this pairing is well below the 24.5 median, and the reason is visible in one row: Uttara Phalguni and Mula share the Aadi Nadi, and the engine marks that "traditionally flagged; worth discussing openly". Swap Mula for Purva Ashadha - a few degrees further into Sagittarius - and Nadi becomes 8; with Tara and Gana rising too, the total reaches 29, the maximum for this pair.
Tara in this example is one direction good, one not. The engine counts from one star to the other inclusively, both ways, and a count whose remainder after dividing by 9 is 3, 5 or 7 is unfavourable. Uttara Phalguni to Mula is 8, remainder 8, which passes. Mula back to Uttara Phalguni is 21, remainder 3, which fails. One favourable direction is worth 1.5.
What the classical texts say
The corpus gives the sign descriptions and the planetary friendships the engine uses, and nothing more for matching. No book in the library - BPHS, Saravali, the Bhrigu Sutras, Advanced Predictive Astrology - sets out Ashtakoot, and none discusses a Virgo Moon with a Sagittarius Moon. The engine's Bhakoot rule and its Graha Maitri points come from web references named in its source, adopted where they agree.
What a score does not tell you
A number from 13.5 to 29 describes two Moon positions under one rule set. It does not describe two people, and this app does not turn it into advice about marriage. Mars placement is a separate check - see Mangal dosha: what it is and is not - and a shared Nadi is explained in Nadi dosha. For something lighter, the love compatibility calculator compares without Ashtakoot.

- What is the Guna Milan score for a Virgo Moon and a Sagittarius Moon?
- Between 13.5 and 29 out of 36 with Virgo entered first (median 24.5) and 12.5 to 28 with Sagittarius first (median 23.5), over all 81 nakshatra-quarter pairings in this app.
- Why is Graha Maitri 1 when Bhakoot is full?
- They measure different things. Bhakoot reads the 4/10 distance, which is not a failing one. Graha Maitri reads the lords: Jupiter lists Mercury as an enemy and Mercury is neutral to Jupiter, which scores 1.
- Is Yoni a problem for this pair?
- No koota is a problem in itself, but for the record Yoni is 2 in all 81 pairings: none of the animals match and none are enemies in the engine's table.
- Does entering Sagittarius first change our score?
- Yes, by one point. The engine's Varna koota depends on order and gives 0 with Sagittarius first. Its header lists this as unresolved.
- How do we find our full score?
- Enter both birth details in the match tool. Nadi alone can move the total by eight points, and it depends on the birth stars.
